EFFECT:

The magician proposes a mind reading experiment

using a book. He calls a woman on stage and gives her
his business card, which has a hole cut out in the
middle. The volunteer uses the business card to freely
focus on a word from the book. After she has one
word, the magician shows he predicted that word in an
envelope, which was on view the whole time.

METHOD:

Any book can be used.

You need a small gimmick to perform the effect. No,
the book it’s not gimmicked or gaffed in any way.
Actually, your business card with a hole cut out in the
middle is what will allow you to perform this miracle.

To make your gimmick you will need:

5
-A book (any book)
-A business card (preferably your own)
-Glue stick
-An X-Acto knife

Follow the next instructions with the aforementioned

items.

Step 1- Take your business card and lay it face up on a

cutting mat or cutting surface. I’ll illustrate it to you
with my own business card.
With the x-acto knife cut a semi rectangle in the center
of the business card. See where the yellow lines are on
the following illustration. That’s where you will cut.

6
You should end up with something like this:
You now have a
little tab. Fold it
upwards and
backwards until
you “break” the
fold of the tab.

Step 2 - Take the book and choose a page near the

end. Choose a word that you would like to force and,
using the x-acto knife cut a square of the same size of
the tab you just made.
For example, let’s say the book is “The most
incredible songs of all time” and you go to page 196.
Let’s say this is the page
196 of our hypothetical
book.
Let’s say you want to force
the word “Sympathy”

7
Look at the next illustration to see exactly where you
would have to cut.
You would have to cut
where the red rectangle is.
You would end up with
something like this:

As you can see, the word

that stands out the most is
“Sympathy”. This is just an example of course. Look
for a word you wish to force in your own book and cut
it.
Step 3 – Paste the rectangle you just cut out from the
book on the tab you cut on the business card. Like this:

8
Step 4 – Fold the tab all the way to the back. The
business card, from the front, should look like this:

From the back, it should look like this:

That’s the gimmick. Put this in your pocket or place it

in the book you are going to use. You are now ready to
perform.

9
Propose to perform a mind reading experiment. Bring
out the book and say something along these lines:
“If I’d ask you to think of a word, that word would
probably be influenced by your surroundings. You
might think of a chair or a table or something
predictable. That’s why we are going to use this book.
You are going to choose a page from this book using
this [take the gimmicked business card out careful
not to flash its back] See this window here? This is
going to help you focus on one word at a time. But
first, tell me a number between 1 and 300 [The
number of pages will depend on your own book.
Let’s say your participant calls out the number
140]
Ok, let’s open this book at that book… excellent.
Please come beside me. If I place the business card
here on page 140, you can see through the window a
lot of words passing by as I pass the card through the
book, right? You are going to choose a word sight
unseen. I’m going to cover the window with my
hand… I’m just going to slide the business card
through the page. Just tell me to stop whenever you
want.
10
When you cover the window with your hand, you
place the business card at the bottom edge of the
page. The tab (which is on the back of the business
card) will get stuck to the page. When you move the
business card up, the tab will automatically get in
place. The following illustrations should make it
clear. Let’s say this is page 140:
At this moment, when the
card is near the bottom
edge of the page like in the
illustration, you put your
hand on it, covering the
window.
Now, when you move the
business card up, the tab
will automatically get in
place. See the next image.

11
When moving the business
card up, the tab gets into
position as you can see.
This is exposed view, at
this moment your hand
would be covering the
window.

Ask your participant to say the word “Stop” whenever

she likes. When she does, lift your hand a little bit to
let her see the word she stopped you at. She will be
looking at your force word. Ask her if there is a word
she can see clearly. She will say yes. Close the book,
leaving the business card inside and put the book
aside.
You have successfully forced the word “Sympathy”.
Now you can either go and read her mind or have the
word inside an envelope and show your prediction to
be correct. An amazing miracle, a word in 10,000!

12
CREDITS:

I saw Banachek do something similar many years ago.

He used a ring instead of a business card.

13
14
EFFECT:

The magician writes a prediction down on a business

card and places it face down on a nearby table. He
takes out three coins of different denominations from
his pocket and asks his participant to choose one. He
then asks his participant to hide that coin in any of his
hands. The participant can switch hands as many times
as he likes and yet, the magician is able to say know
exactly where the coin is. Finally, the magician shows
his prediction. He predicted not only which hand the
coin was going to be hidden, but also what coin the
participant would choose!

METHOD:

There are two methods going on here. The first one is

a magician’s choice and the second one is a
mathematical principle.
Let’s deal with the first method first.

15
In performance, take out one of your business cards
and write the following prediction on the back of it:

Let’s say that the three coins you have in your pocket
are a penny, a dime and a quarter. To match your
prediction, you need to force the Penny.
Take out the three coins and lay them down on a table,
in a row. Now say this to your participant:
“Here are three coins; a dime, a penny and a quarter.
With your right hand, please cover one of the coins”
If your participant covers the Penny, you say:

16
“Great! You could have chosen any one of the three
coins, but you chose the Penny. We are going to play a
game with it”
If instead he covers one of the other coins, you
continue:
“…and with your left hand, cover another coin”
Now, if he let the Penny uncovered, continue:
“Do you want to change your mind? Excellent, those
are eliminated. The only one you left uncovered is the
Penny. We are going to play a little game with it”
If he covers the penny and an indifferent coin,
continue:
“Great! Pick those up and I want you to give me one.
Which one do you want to give me?”
If he gives you the Penny, say:
“Do you want to change your mind? Excellent, you
decided to give me the penny! We are going to play a
little game with it”
If he gives you the indifferent coin, say:

17
“Do you want to change your mind? Excellent, you
decided to keep the penny! We are going to play a
little game with it”
As you can see, “all roads lead to Rome”. No matter
how it goes, you are going to force the Penny.
That’s it for the first method. Now let’s get into the
second method:
No matter what, your participant now has the penny.
At this point you have to notice if he is holding the
penny with his right hand or with his left hand.
Now say:
“We are going to play a little game. I want you to
think of a number from one to five. Any number. Do
you have one? Excellent.
I’m going to turn my back. When I do, I want you to
switch the coin from hand to hand as many times as
the number you are thinking of. Do it now.
Are you done? Great. Let’s make it a little bit harder!
Switch hands as many times as the number you are
thinking of again! Are you done? Excellent!”

18
At this point, the coin will be exactly in the same hand
as it was before your participant started to switch
hands!
If your participant was holding the coin in his right
hand, then it will end up in the right hand. If it was in
his left hand, then it will end up in his left hand. Try it!
BUT! To match our prediction, the coin must end up
in the right hand.
If at the beginning he was holding the coin in his right
hand, then you are done. The coin will end up in the
right hand.
If at the beginning he was holding the coin in his left
hand, we need to do something extra.
After your participant has switched hands as many
times as the number he is thinking of twice, say:
“And just to go crazy, switch only one time”
The coin is now exactly where we want it to be… in
your participant’s right hand! Now just ask him to
make a fist with both hands so that we you turn to face
him you will have no idea where the coin is.
Except that you do, and you have a killer prediction!

19
20
EFFECT:

The magician asks his participant to name three

random words and then focus on one of those three
words. The magician shows that he predicted that
word.

METHOD:

The “out to lunch” principle and a variation on the

mathematical principle that we used before!
Follow the next instructions.

Take one of your business cards, hold it in portrait

orientation and fold it in half. The printed side of the
business card should be in the inside. Now you have a
folded business card which is blank on both sides.
Open the business card back up and, on the blank side,
write the following message:

21
The lower half of the business card is left blank for the
time being.
After you have done this, fold the card back in half
just as you did before. The printed side of the business
card should in the inside and what you’ve written
should be facing away from you. You should be
looking at something like this:

22
Next, take a stack of around 10 of your business cards
and wrap a rubber band around them. Like this:

And write the following message in the lower half of

the top business card of the stack (the one that is
facing you, like in the above image)
You should have something like this:

23
Now, insert the folded business card (the one you
prepared before) under the rubber band, like this:

As you can see, stack looks completely normal but

now we have the prepared business card folded and
ready to be used.

Start the routine by asking your participant to name

three random words. Let’s say, for the sake of
explanation, that the words are Cheese, House and
Shoe.

24
You now take the stack of business card prepared with
the out to lunch principle and write those three words
on the upper half of the business card, like this:

Show it to your participant.

Now, pretend to write this:

“Random Words” on the lower
half of the business card. In
reality, you will write the second
word mentioned by your
participant, in this case, the word
“House” Like this:

25
Take out the second business card (the one where you
wrote the list of words) and give it to your participant.
Everything looks exactly as it should.

26
Now, on the stack you have this. Which is, a
business card that, when unfolded, will look like this.

At this point your participant is holding the card with

the random words he named. Put the stack of business
cards in your pocket (the folded prediction still there)
And call attention to the list of random words your
participant is holding. Say:
“Is there any reason why you thought of those words?
They just popped into your mind? Interesting.

27
You are going to choose one of those words at
random. When I say of the word “random” a pair of
dies always pops into my mind.
Imagine that you have two dies in your hand. Shake
them in your hands and let them roll! Look at that!
They both landed on the same number! What number
is it?”
Let him answer. Let’s say he says the number “3”
Four… they both landed on the number four. That’s
six! Good, a random number, right?”
It doesn’t matter what number he says. By adding both
numbers we always get an even number, and that’s all
we care for.
Now, using the pen, count the words until you get to,
in this case, the number six. To better explain this,
look at the following pictures!

28
As you can see, no matter what the number is. As long
as it’s an even number, it will always force the word in
the middle!
Now you’ve successfully forced the word “House” and
you have in your pocket a stack of business card with a
folded and accurate prediction.
Just put your hand in your pocket and palm off the
prediction. Now you can produce it from a wallet or
just from your pocket. This routine has got me booked
a lot of times!
Have fun with this and use it wisely.
29
30
WHAT’S MANOEDA?

Manoeda is the name of a “which hand” style of

routine that I released about two years ago. The effect
is simple: You play the classic coin in hand game with
your participant, but harder, for there will be no coin at
all! Everything happens in your participant’s mind. He
can hide an imaginary coin in any of his hands or in
his pocket and yet you are able to know exactly where
the coin is!
I’m going to explain the basic method and then I’m
going to give some never-before released ideas to take
Manoeda away from the “which hand” realm and into
other types of routines.
I hope there will be something here for those who have
never heard about Manoeda and for those who have
bought it in the past two years.
Without anything else to add, please follow me to the
next room!

31
EFFECT & PRESENTATION:

The magician selects a random spectator to help him.

Have you ever played that game where you hide a coin
in any of your hands and someone else tries to guess
where the coin is? We are going to play that game.
However, it is going to be a bit more difficult, as we’re
going to play with an imaginary coin.
Here, take this coin. (Pretend to give him a coin)
I’m going to close and cover my eyes, and you’re
going to hide the coin in any of your hands. Or! You
could hide it in your pocket and leave your hands
empty, trying to fool me.
And once you’re done, I want you to extend both
hands with tight fists in front of you, just as if we were
playing with a real coin. And please don’t do anything
that could give away where you decided to hide the
coin. Are you ready? Good.
Close your eyes and cover them with your hands
Done? Perfect, I’m going to try to find out where the
coin is.

32
To do that, I’m going to ask you a very simple Yes/No
question. You can answer me with the truth or with a
lie; it’s completely up to you. I’m going to try to read
your mind to know if you are being truthful or not…
This may not work if you’re not willing to help me, so
let’s work together.
Are you ready? Good. The first question is…Is the
coin in any of your hands?
-Yes.
Interesting… Ok, I’m feeling something… but I can’t
quite discern what this is… Ok, I’m going to ask you
one more question. To get a stronger feeling this time,
if you lied to me in the first question, lie to me again.
If you told me the truth, tell me the truth again...Just
don’t do anything that may give you away.
Let’s see…Is the coin… in your left hand?
-Yes.
Hmmm…All right… It certainly is a bit clearer now;
this feeling is getting stronger and stronger. You are
doing wonderful!
This is the last thing I need you to do… If the coin is
in your right hand, put it in your pocket, or if it already
33
was in your pocket just put it in your left hand. This is
just to make it a bit more random.
Have you done that? Good.
When I snap my fingers, I want you to mentally tell
me where you have the coin. Don’t say anything out
loud and don’t give me any clues, just think about it.
(Snap!) One more time… (Snap!)
Interesting, I can see that the coin… Is not in
your…pocket… It’s definitely not in your… right
hand… and I’m a 100% sure that the coin is in your
left hand!
The participant agrees!

34
METHOD:

As you may have (or have not) already guessed, the

secret lies (pun intended!) in the two questions in
which the participant can either lie or tell the truth.
We’ll put a value to the spectator’s answers: Yes = 1
and No = 2
You just have to do a simple addition and you will
know everything you need to know!
If your participant’s answer to the first question is
“Yes” in your head you’ll think “1”
If the second answer is “No” In your head you’ll think
“2” and then you just have to do the math: 1 + 2= 3.
If you get a “3” it means that the coin is in your
participant’s right hand. This is sure fire.
You heard that right! If, after you’ve done the math
you get a 3, you instantly now where the coin is! you
could end the effect here.
If you get any other number (2 or 4) it means that the
coin is either in your participant’s left hand or in his

35
pocket, so you can be 100% sure the coin is NOT in
his right hand, and you will take advantage of that fact.
As soon as we know the coin is not in his right hand,
continue:
“Hmmm…Al right… It certainly is a bit clearer now;
this feeling is getting stronger and stronger. You are
doing wonderful!
This is the last thing I need you to do… If the coin is in
your right hand, put it in your pocket, or if it already
was in your pocket just put it in your left hand.
However this is just to make it a bit more random”

This script allows you to force the coin in the

participant’s LEFT HAND.
And now you can reveal it in any way you like.
If you wish to predict where the coin is going to be,
you should always predict that is going to be in the
LEFT HAND.
And that’s basically it.
Now that you know the basic method, let’s look at
some new ways to apply the Manoeda principle!
36
EFFECT:

The magician proposes to play a role game with the

participant. The magician will play the role of a police
detective and the participant will play the role of a
master mind criminal. Ask your participant to name
three different places in two, where he might have
hidden millions of robbed dollars!
You, as the super detective that you are, find out
whether your participant is lying or not in order to find
where the money is hidden!

37
METHOD:
You will use the Manoeda principle again. Instead of
using the Right Hand-Left Hand-Pocket locations,
use the locations named by your participant.
Let’s say your participant names the following
locations:
The Beach, Walmart and The Park.
In this case, the questions would be like this:
“Is the money in The Beach or in Walmart?”
And then: “Is the money in The Beach?
If you get a 3, that means the money is in the beach. If
you get a 2 or a 4 that means the money is either in
Walmart or in the park.
In that case, ask your participant to change the location
of the money!
“If the money was in the beach, hide it in the park. If it
was already in the park hide it in Walmart!”
That script forces him to hide the money in Walmart!
Just remember: First location is Right Hand. Second
location is Left hand and third location is the Pocket.

38
EFFECT:

A participant hides an egg under one of three cups.

The cups are numbered at the top (1, 2 & 3) The
magician reads the participant’s body language to
know where the egg is. The magician smashes two of
the cups, leaving the egg intact!

METHOD:

In this case, cup number one = right hand. Cup number

two = left hand and cup number three = the pocket.
The questions you should ask to find where the coin is
are:

39
“Is the egg under one of these two cups?” While
pointing at cups number one and number two.
The second question should be:
“Is the egg under this cup?” While pointing at cup
number one.
Again, if you get a 3, it means the egg is under cup
number one.
If you get a 2 or a 4 it means the egg is under cup
number 2 or under cup number 4.
If you get 2 or 4 continue:
“If the egg is under cup number 1, put it under cup
number 3… or if it was already under number three
put it under cup number two”
That script forces cup number 2.
Once you know exactly where the egg is, smash the
other two cups, leaving the cup with the egg intact.

Just one more thing… Do not perform this with spikes

or knifes. Don’t be silly. If your participant gets
confused with the answers you’ll regret it. Play safe.

40
41
EFFECT & PRESENTATION:

“Do you know what these are?” –Asks the magician,

while lying five Zener cards on the table.
“These are commonly named ‘Zener cards’ and they
were created back in 1920 by J.B. Rhine and Dr. Karl
Zener.
They were used to prove the existence of Extra Sensory
Perception, and right now you are about see how.
Please, take the cards face down and give them a good
mix. The idea is that nobody knows which card is
which.
In the meantime, I am going to place this little and
mysterious envelope here on the table, for the future.
Have you done that? Excellent. Hand me the cards,
please.
Just to be extra fair, take a look at the back of the
cards… as you can see, they are completely opaque
and you cannot see through them.

42
I’m going to deal the cards facedown, one at a time,
and I want you to say the word ‘stop’ whenever you
like”.
Start to deal the cards until your participant says the
word “stop”.
“Right here? Perfect. Please, take a look at the card
you stopped at” –At this point the magician turns his
head away, to avoid seeing the card.
“Once you’ve seen the card, commit it to memory and
place it back, facedown.”
When your participant places the card back, the
magician puts the cards he is holding on top of the
cards on the table, ‘losing’ the participant’s card in the
middle of the stack.

“Now that was completely fair, right? You mixed the

cards, you stopped at the card you wanted, and now
you have a symbol in your mind. Which, by the way,
only you know.

43
Please keep that symbol in your mind; it will be
important later on.
Now, we will get into the second phase of the test.
J.B. Rhine and Dr. Karl Zener assigned a number to
each symbol:

The square, it’s a one.

The star, it’s a two.
The wavy lines, it’s a three.
The cross, it’s a four.
And the circle, it’s a five.
Right now you are thinking of a symbol. Think of the
number assigned to your symbol.
Remember: square one, star two, circle three, wavy
lines four and cross five.
Now you have a symbol and a number in your mind.

Here, take the stack and deal, one at a time, as many

cards as the number you are thinking of.

44
For example; if your number is one, deal one card. If
your number is two, deal two cards.
You get the idea.
I will look away as you do this”.
Now your participant will deal as many cards
facedown as the number he is thinking of.
“Have you done that? Good.
Set aside the card you stopped at, still face down, and
put the rest of the cards together. That way when I
turn back, it will be impossible for me to know how
many cards you dealt.
Done? Excellent. –Turn to face your participant.
Let’s recap. You mixed the cards, and selected a
symbol at random. Then you used that random symbol
to select yet another random symbol… which is this.”
Turn the participant’s card face up to see what symbol
he dealt to. Let’s say it’s The Cross.
“The Cross. Interesting…

45
Remember the little and mysterious envelope I placed
on the table? Please, open it and show everyone
what’s inside…”
Your participant opens the envelope and inside is a
Zener card… amazingly enough, it’s The Cross.
“Oh, and you haven’t told anyone what your first
symbol was, right?”-You take out your wallet and
remove a Zener card face down.
“What was it?” Let’s say it was The Star. You slowly
turn the card face up and it is The Star.

METHOD:

You need five marked Zener Cards.

Give the cards to your participant and ask him to mix

them. In the meantime, you place the “little and
mysterious” envelope on the table.

This envelope contains a card with your force symbol,

in this case, The Cross.
46
Take the cards back, and say:

“Just to be extra fair, take a look at the back of the

cards… as you can see, they are completely opaque
and you cannot see through them”.

As you say this, pass cards from the top to the bottom
of the stack, apparently showing the cards to be
completely opaque.

What you are doing is, in fact, looking for The Cross
(The cards are marked, remember?)

When you find The Cross, place it on the bottom of

the stack and proceed as follows:

“I’m going to deal the cards facedown, one at a time,

and I want you to say the word ‘stop’ whenever you
like”.

Start dealing the cards on the table, and as soon as

your participant says the word “stop” you say “Are
you sure?” and look at the mark of the card he stopped
at.

At this point you know the identity of the card he

stopped at, in this example, The Star.
47
You must also take note of how many cards are left in
your hand. This is important, as you will see in a
moment.

Turn your head away and ask your participant to take a

look at the card he stopped at.
Once he has committed the card to memory, ask him
to put the card back and replace the stack.

Turn to face your participant. Next you proceed like

this:

Remember: square one, star two, circle three, wavy

lines four and cross five.”

48
This part is important.

Here, you need to remember the identity of the card

your participant stopped at a moment ago, let’s say
THE STAR, and how many cards were left in your
hand, let’s say TWO.

When you are assigning numbers to each symbol, just

assign the number two to The Star.

If the card your participant stopped at was the square,

and there were three cards left in your hand, then you
would assign the number three to the square.

I hope I’m making myself clear on this.

Proceed as follows:

“Now you have a symbol and a number in your mind.

Here, take the stack and deal, one at a time, as many

cards as the number you are thinking of.”

This, of course, will force the second card down in the

stack, which is The Cross (in this case)

Now you can show your prediction to be correct.

49
Let your participant react.

And remind him of his first selection.

“Oh, and you haven’t told anyone what your first

symbol was, right?”

Take out your wallet as your say this. Here you will be
using multiple outs.
You just have four different Zener symbols in different
compartments of your wallet.

Since you apparently don’t know your participant’s

first symbol, there’s no heat on the wallet. Just take
out the right out, and put the wallet back in your
pocket.

“What was it?”

Slowly reveal your prediction.

End of the routine.

50
THE END!

If you’re reading this it means you have finished the

book! (Or that the book was so boring that you
skipped to the end!) Either way, I want to thank you
for purchasing this little piece of my mind (you did
purchase it, didn’t you?)

Each effect inside this book I’ve used many times in

real performance. They are my babies and I’m sure
you will take good care of them.

If you have any questions, complaints, suggestions or

you would just like to chat with me, I’m always
available at everelizalde.info@gmail.com.

I hope you enjoyed at least some of the effect I

decided to teach you. I put in a lot of work into some
of this stuff! I’m really proud of the final product.

Take care of yourself and, as always, until next time!
