 REPORT ON LOAD TEST ON PILE
1. General:
This method specifies the testing of pile by the application of an axial load in accordance with ASTM
D 1143.

Details of test pile:

i. Number: Test Pile
ii. Type: Cast-in-Situ R.C.C Pile
iii. Location: 4+670 (Near Army Railway Station)
iv. Pile Diameter: 1200mm, Length: 38m from Cut-off
v. Pile Top: +4.235m, Tip: -33.765m
vi. Commencement of Drilling: 15-4-11
vii. Date of casting: 18-4-11

2. Proof Load:
Allowable load capacity of the pile is 750MTon. Maximum 1312MTon (175% of allowable load) was
applied to the pile.

3. Reaction System:
An arrangement of reaction frame was established anchored with four number reaction piles around
the test pile. This reaction frame, fixed with reaction piles, was used to apply load on the test pile by
use of a hydraulic jack.

4. Test Level:
The design cut-off level of the pile is +4.235m. Hydraulic Jack is placed at cut-off level.

5. Testing Equipment:
In all case, it was ensured that when the hydraulic jack and the load measuring device were mounted
on the pile head, the whole system was stable up to the 1.33 times the maximum load to be applied.
Means were provided to enable dial gauges to be read from a position clear of the test frame in
conditions where failure in any part of the system due to overloading, buckling, loss of hydraulic
pressure and so on might constitute a hazard to personnel.

The hydraulic jack, pump, hoses, pipes couplings and other apparatus operated were under 1.33
times the maximum working pressure.

The maximum test load or test pressure expressed is displayed as a reading on the gauge and all
operators were made aware of this limit.

6. Measurement of Load:
Load was calculated by multiplying cross-section area of the hydraulic piston with pressure reading
from the pressure gauge as provided in enclosed calibration sheet.

7. Measuring Movement of Pile Heads:

An independent reference frame was setup to permit measurement of the movement of the pile
head. The supports for the frame were founded in such a manner and at such a distance from the
test pile, reaction piles that movement of the ground in the vicinity of the equipment do not cause
movement of the reference frame during the testing. To achieve such condition, two simply
supported reference beam were established on opposite side of pile sufficiently anchored to the
earth.

The measurement of pile movement was made by two dial gauges fixed to the pile and bear on
surface frame. The dial gauges are to be fixed to the pile and bear on surface on the reference
frame. The dial gauges were placed in diametrically opposite positions and be equidistant from the
pile axis. The dial gauges enable readings were made to within an accuracy of 0.01mm.

8. Test Procedure:

The maximum load to be applied on the pile was 1312MTon in multiple cycles. The loading and
unloading were performed in stages, and these loading and unloading stages are shown in graphical
and tabular form in Appendix. Loading was halted due to excessive settlement of pile head.
