The Major Phases of Life: Significance of the Divisions

Most developmental scientists agree that the human lifespan can be divided into distinct phases
corresponding roughly to particular ages. The scheme usually looks something like this:

Prenatal life (conception to birth)

Infancy (approximately the first six months of life)

Toddlerhood (about six months to 2 years)

Early childhood (about 3 to 6 or 7 years)

Middle childhood (about 6 or 7 to about 11 or 12)

Adolescence (about 11 or 12 to about 20)

Early adulthood (about 21 to 35 or 40)

Middle adulthood, or middle age (about 35 - 40 to about 60 - 65)

Late adulthood (about 60 or 65 until death)
