FOREWORD
During this quarter we will study important aspects of the plan of salva-
tion in type and antitype, under the title Christ Our Advocate. The Bible
teaches that, when sin entered into the world through the disobedience of
one man, when the death sentence fell upon our first parents, and when an
impenetrable gloom seemed to enshroud the future of the human race, God's
provision for the restoration of man was announced to Adam and Eve (Gene-
sis 3:15). The gulf between man and God, between heaven and earth, was
bridged by One who was called "the Lamb slain from the foundation of the
world," or "the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." This
could be no other than the Son of God. "For God so loved the world, that he'
gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not
perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.
"God is a spirit; yet He is a personal being, for man was made in His
image. As a personal being, God has revealed Himself in His Son. Jesus, the
outshining of the Father's glory, 'and the express image of His person'
(Hebrews 1:3), was on earth found in fashion as a man. As a personal
Saviour He came to the world. As a personal Saviour He ascended on high.
As a personal Saviour He intercedes in the heavenly courts. Before the
throne of God in our behalf ministers 'One like the Son of man.' Daniel
7:13."-Education, p. 132.
From Genesis to Revelation, reconciliation between the repentant sinner
and the Creator through the atoning blood of Christ is the main theme of the
Bible. Ever since death came upon all men as a result of sin, there has been
only one way by which we can have access to the Father, only one name by
which we can be saved-that of Jesus Christ.
"Christ is the connecting link between God and man. He has promised
His personal intercession. He places the whole virtue of His righteousness
on the side of the suppliant. He pleads for man, and man, in need of divine
help, pleads for himself in the presence of God, using the influence of the
One who gave His life for the life of the world." - Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 178.
"This is the sinner's only hope, and if he rests here in sincere faith, he is
sure of pardon and that full and free. There is only one channel and that is
accessible to all, and through that channel a rich and abundant forgiveness
awaits the penitent, contrite soul, and the darkest sins are forgiven." - The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 913. '
The lessons presented in this quarterly just touch upon the subject
chosen for our study. For a deeper understanding of this great theme, all
Sabbath school students should be encouraged to examine, earnestly and
prayerfully, many additional Bible texts and Spirit of Prophecy statements
which shed more light on this important topic. Many points which still
remain a mystery, and which we cannot understand now in our sinful and
mortal state, must be left for the future, in the hope that God will reveal
them to us in His own time. Deuteronomy 29:29; John 16:12.
May the Lord richly bless the students and the teachers!

The Turning Point
"While the disciples were contending for the highest place, in
the promised kingdom, Christ girded Himself, and performed the
office of a servant by washing the feet of those who called Him
Lord. He, the pure, spotless Lamb of God, was presenting Himself
as a sin-offering; and as He now ate the Passover with His disciples,
He put an end to the sacrifices which for four thousand years had
been offered. In the place of the national festival which the Jewish
people had observed, He instituted a memorial service, in the cere-
mony of the feet washing, and the sacramental supper, to be observed
by His followers through all time and in every country. These should
ever repeat Christ's act, that all may see that true service called for
unselfish ministry.... And as we wash the feet of Christ's fol-
lowers, it is as though we were indeed touching the Son of God. We
do this act because Christ told us to do it, and Christ Himself is
among us. His Holy Spirit does the work of uniting our hearts....
"In this ordinance, Christ discharged His disciples from the
cares and burdens of the ancient Jewish obligations in rites and
ceremonies. These no longer possessed any virtue; for type was
meeting antitype in Himself, the authority and foundation of all
Jewish ordinances that pointed to Him as the great and only effica-
cious offering for the sins of the world.... He would teach them
that brother is not to exalt himself above brother, that the dangers
of disunion and strife shall be seen and appreciated; for the health
and holy activity of the soul are involved.
"This ordinance does not speak so largely to man's intellectual
capacity as to his heart. His moral and spirit\lal nature needs it. If
His disciples had not needed this, it would not have been left for
them as Christ's last established ordinance in connection with, and
including, the last supper. It was Christ's desire to leave to His
disciples an ordinance that would do for them the very thing they
needed-that would serve to disentangle them from the rites and
ceremonies which they had hitherto engaged in as essential, and
which the reception of the gospel made no longer of any force. To
continue these rites would be an insult to Jehovah. Eating of the
body, and drinking of the blood, of Christ, not merely at the sacra-
mental service, but daily partaking of the bread of life to satisfy the
soul's hunger, would be in receiving His Word and doing His will."

Lesson 1 Sabbath, January 6, 1996

The Plan of Redemption

"I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed
and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel"
(Genesis 3:15).

"Although gloom and darkness hung, like the pall of death, over the future,
yet in the promise of the Redeemer, the Star of hope lighted up the dark
future."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1084.

MAN SUBJECT TO LAW December 31

1. What evidence shows that man was made subject to the law of God
from the very beginning? Romans 5:20; 4:15 (last part).

"The law of God is as sacred as Himself. It is a revelation of His will, a

transcript of His character, the expression of divine love and wisdom. The
harmony of creation depends upon the perfect conformity of all beings, of
everything, animate and inanimate, to the law of the Creator. God has ordained
laws for the government, not only of living beings, but of all the operations
of nature....
"Like the angels, the dwellers in Eden had been placed upon probation;
their happy estate could be retained only on condition of fidelity to the
Creator's law. They could obey and live, or disobey and perish."-Patriarchs
and Prophets, pp. 52, 53.

2. How did our first parents have a knowledge of the law of God?
Where do the true followers of Christ carry God's law? Jeremiah
31:33 (Hebrews 8:10); 2 Corinthians 3:3.

"Adam and Eve, at their creation, had a knowledge of the law of God;
they were acquainted with its claims upon them; its precepts were written
upon their hearts." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 363.
"The law of God existed before the creation of man or else Adam could
not have sinned. After the transgression of Adam the principles of the law
were not changed, but were definitely arranged and expressed to meet man
in his fallen condition." -Selected Messages, book 1, p. 230.

KNOWLEDGE INVOLVES RESPONSIBILITY January 1
3. How do even honest Gentiles have a knowledge of the law of God?
Romans 2:14-16.

"Even among the heathen are those who have cherished the spirit of
kindness; before the words of life had fallen upon their ears, they have
befriended the missionaries, even ministering to them at the peril of their
own lives. Among the heathen are those who worship God ignorantly, those
to whom the light is never brought by human instrumentality, yet theY'will not
perish. Though ignorant of the written law of God, they have heard His voice
speaking to them in nature, and have done the things that the law required.
Their works are evidence that the Holy Spirit has touched their hearts, and
they are recognized as the children of God."- The Desire of Ages, p. 638.

4. As far as the requirements of the law of God are concerned, what

difference is made in the plan of God between ignorance and knowl-
edge? Acts 17:30; James 4:17.'

"If light come, and that light is set aside or rejected, then comes con-
demnation and the frown of God; but before the light comes, there is no sin,
for there is no light for them to reject."- Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 116.
"You are accountable only for the manner in which you, independent of
all others, use the light that shines upon your pathway. The lack of consecra-
tion in others will be no excuse for you. The fact that they pervert the truth
by their wrong course of action, because they are unsanctified by it, will not
render you less responsible." -Ibid., vol. 2, p. 490.
D Tuesday
SIN January 2
5. What is sin and how is it revealed? 1 John 3:4; Romans 3:20; 7:7.

" 'Sin is the transgression of the law.' This is the only definition of sin.
Without the law there can be no transgression. "-The SDA Bible Commentary
[E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 951.
"The transgression of God's law in a single instance, in the smallest
particular, is sin. And the nonexecution of the penalty of that sin would be a
crime in the divine administration. God is a judge, the avenger of justice,
which is the habitation and foundation of His throne. He cannot dispense
with His law, He cannot do away with its smallest item in order to meet and
pardon sin. The rectitude and justice and moral excellence of the law must
be maintained and vindicated before the heavenly universe and the worlds
unfallen." -Ibid.
6. How did sin enter into the world and what consequences did it
bring? Genesis 3:1-6; Isaiah 43:27; Romans 5:12. I~ what sense,
also, were the eyes of our first parents opened?

-6-
"The sacrifice demanded by their transgression revealed to Adam and
Eve the sacred character of the law of God; and they saw, as they had never
seen before, the guilt of sin and its dire results." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 66.

D Wednesday
MAN FORFEITED THE GLORY OF GOD January 3

7. How did Adam and Eve try to remedy the consequence of their
disobedience? Genesis 3:7. What is the symbolic meaning of the fig-
leaf covering? Revelation 3: 17.

"The fig-leaves represent the arguments used to cover disobedience.

When the Lord calls the attention of men and women to the truth, the mak-
ing of fig-leaves into aprons will be begun, to hide the nakedness of the soul.
But the nakedness of the sinner is not covered. All the arguments pieced
together by all who have interested themselves in this flimsy work will come
to naught."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1084.

8. What sentence was pronounced upon man ·when he sinned, and

how has this sentence affected all the descendants of Adam?
Genesis 2:17; 3:17-19; Romans 3:23; 6:23 (first part).

"The sin of man has brought the sure results-decay, deformity, and
death. Today the whole world is tainted, corrupted, stricken with mortal
disease. The earth groaneth under the continual transgression of the inhabi-
tants thereof.
"The Lord's curse is upon the earth, upon man, upon beast, upon the
fish in the sea, and as transgression becomes almost universal the curse will
be permitted to become as broad and as deep as the transgression."-The
SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1085.

D Thursday
GOD'S MERCIFUL PROVISION January 4

9. What plan had been conceived by divine love for the redemption of
man? What is the meaning of the sentence pronounced in Genesis
3:15? 1 John 3:8. '

"Divine love had conceived a plan whereby man might be redeemed.

The broken law of God demanded the life of the sinner. In all the universe
there was but one who could, in behalf of man, satisfy its claims. Since the
divine law is as sacred as God Himself, only one equal with God could make
atonement for its transgression." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 63.
"To man the first intimation of redemption was communicated in the
sentence pronounced upon Satan in the garden. The Lord declared, 'I will
put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her
seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.' Gen. 3:15. This
sentence, uttered in the hearing of our first parents, was to them a promise.

-7-
While it foretold war between man and Satan, it declared that the power of
the great adversary would finally be broken.... Though [our first parents
and their descendants] must suffer from the power of their mighty foe, they
could look forward to final victory."-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 65, 66.

10. What promise did the true worshipers see in their sacrificial offer-
ings, and what was the basis of their faith and hope? Hebrews 11 :4;
Acts 4:10-12; 10:43. On what condition will Christ be our Saviour?
John 15:4.

"In the sacrificial offering on every altar was seen a Redeemer. With
the cloud of incense arose from every contrite heart the prayer that God
would accept their offerings as showing faith in the coming Saviour."-The
Review and Herald, March 2, 1886.
"That which God required of Adam before his fall was perfect obedience
to His law. God requires now what He required of Adam, perfect obedience,
righteousness without a flaw, without shortcoming in His sight. God help us
render to Him all His law requires. We cannot do this without that faith that
brings Christ's righteousness into daily practice.... Oh, that all who believe
the truth would believe in Jesus as their own Saviour.... Salvation is not to
be baptized, not to have our names upon the church books, not to preach the
truth. But it is a living union with Jesus Christ, to be renewed in heart, doing
the works of Christ in faith and labor of love, in patience, meekness, and
hope."-Selected Messages, book 2, pp. 380, 381.

The Earthly Sanctuary

"Let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them" (Exo-
dus 25:8).

"Through Christ was to be fulfilled the purpose of which the tabernacle was
a symbol."-Education, p. 36.
D Sunday
AFTER THE DIVINE PATTERN January 7
1. What instructions did God give to Moses for the construction of a
sanctuary, and what model did He present to him? Exodus 25:8, 9,
40; 26:30. What was the deeper meaning of these instructions?

"The holy places made with hands were to be 'figures of the true,' 'pat-
terns of the things in the heavens' -a miniature representation of the heav-
enly temple where Christ, our great high priest, after offering His life as a
sacrifice, was to minister in the sinner's behalf."-Patriarchs and Prophets,
p.343.
"The exactness, skill, tact, wisdom, and perfection which [God] required
in the building of the earthly tabernacle, He desires to have brought into
everything that shall be done in His service."- Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 142.
"In all things we are to manifest purity of character, to show that the
truth received and obeyed makes the receivers sons and daughters of God,
children of the heavenly King, and that as such they are honest in their deal-
ings, faithful, true, and upright in the small as well as the great things of
life. " -Ibid.

2. What biblical evidence shows that the sanctuary (and later the tem-
ple), as well as the presence of God in it, also had symbolic mean-
ings? Isaiah 57:15; 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17; 1 Peter 2:5.

"The Jewish tabernacle was a type of the Christian church.... The

church on earth, composed of those who are faithful and loyal to God, is the
'true tabernacle,' whereof the Redeemer is the minister. God, and not man,
pitched this tabernacle on a high, elevated platform. This tabernacle is
Christ's body, and from north, south, east, and west He gathers those who
shall help to compose it.... A holy tabernacle is built up of those who
receive Christ as their personal Saviour.... Christ is the minister of the

-9-
true tabernacle, the high priest of all who believe in Him as a personal t

Saviour."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 931.

"To the end of time the presence of the [Holy] Spirit is to abide with the
true church." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 55.

D Monday
THE TABERNACLE AND ITS CONSTRUCTION January 8

3. What was necessary for the building of the sanctuary, and how
might we gain incentive from the example of the Israelite people?
Exodus 25:2-7; 35:29; 36:6,7.

"For the building of the sanctuary great and expensive preparations

were necessary; a large amount of the most precious and costly material was
required; yet the Lord accepted only freewill offerings.... Devotion to God
and a spirit of sacrifice were the first requisites in preparing a dwelling place
for the Most High." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 343.
"All who love the worship of God and prize the blessing of His sacred
presence will manifest the same spirit of sacrifice in preparing a house
where He may meet with them. They will desire to bring to the Lord an
offering of the very best that they possess."-Ibid., p. 344.

4. How were the two apartments of the sanctuary separated from

each other? Exodus 26:33. What was represented by the cherubim
embroidered on the curtains (Exodus 26:1, 31)? Hebrews 1:13, 14.

"The building was divided into two apartments by a rich and beautiful
curtain, or veil, suspended from gold-plated pillars; and a similar veil closed
the entrance of the first apartment. These, like the inner covering, which
formed the ceiling, were of the most gorgeous colors, blue, purple, and scar-
let, beautifully arranged, while inwrought with threads of gold and silver
were cherubim to represent the angelic host who are connected with the
work of the heavenly sanctuary and who are ministering spirits to the people
of God on earth."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 347.

D Tuesday
THE FIRST APARTMENT January 9

5. What was the first apartment called? Describe the furnishings of

the first apartment. Hebrews 9:2.

"In the first apartment, or holy place, were the table of shewbread, the
candlestick, or lampstand, and the altar of incense. The table of shewbread
stood on the north. With its ornamental crown, it was overlaid with pure
gold. On this table, the priests were each Sabpath to place twelve cakes,
arranged in two piles, and sprinkled with frankincense. The loaves that were
removed, being accounted holy, were to be eaten by the priests. On the south
was the seven-branched candlestick, with its seven lamps.... There being no

-10 -
windows in the tabernacle, the lamps were never all extinguished at one
time, but shed their light by day and by night." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 348.
6. Where did the altar of incense stand? What was its purpose, and
what did the incense represent? Give the known particulars. Exo-
dus 30:1-4; 40:26, 27.

"Just before the veil separating the holy place from the most holy and
the immediate presence of God, stood the golden altar of incense. Upon this
altar the priest was to burn incense every morning and evening; its horns
were touched with the blood of the sin offering, and it was sprinkled with
blood upon the great Day of Atonement. The fire upon this altar was kindled
by God Himself and was sacredly cherished. Day and night the holy incense
diffused its fragrance throughout the sacred apartments, and without, far
around the tabernacle." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 348.
"The incense, ascending with the prayers of Israel, represents the
merits and intercession of Christ, His perfect righteousness, which through
faith is imputed to His people, and which can alone make the worship of sin-
ful beings acceptable to God."-Ibid., p. 353.
D Wednesday
THE SECOND APARTMENT January 10

7. What was the second apartment called? Give a description of it.

Hebrews 9:3-5. Why is the second apartment also called "the taber-
nacle of the testimony"? Exodus 31:18; 40:20; Revelation 15:5.

"Beyond the inner veil was the holy of holies, where centered the sym-
bolic service of atonement and intercession, and which formed the connect-
ing link between heaven and earth. In this apartment was the ark, a chest of
acacia wood, overlaid within and without with gold, and having a crown of
gold about the top. It was made as a depositary for the tables of stone, upon
which God Himself had inscribed the Ten Commandments. He'nce it was called
the ark of God's testament, or the ark of the covenant, since the Ten Com-
mandments were the basis of the covenant made between God and Israel.
"The cover of the sacred chest was called the mercy seat. This was
wrought of one solid piece of gold, and was surmounted by golden cherubim,
one standing on each end. One wing of each angel was stretched forth on high,
while the other was folded over the body (see Ezekiel 1:11) in token of rever-
ence and humility.. 0 •

"Above the mercy seat was the Shekinah, the manifestation of the divine
Presence; and from between the cherubim, God made known His will."-
Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 348, 349.

8. What was the meaning of the mercy seat placed immediately above
the law? Psalm 85:10.

"The law of God, enshrined within the ark, was the great rule of righ-
teousness and judgment. That law pronounced death upon the transgressor;

-11-
but above the law was the mercy seat, upon which the presence of God was
revealed, and from which, by virtue of the atonement, pardon was granted to
the repentant sinner."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 349.

D Thursday
THE COURT January 11

9. How was the tabernacle enclosed? Exodus 27:9; 40:33. Where was
the entrance?

"The sacred tent was enclosed in an open space called the court, which
was surrounded by hangings, or screens, of fine linen, suspended from pil-
lars of brass. The entrance of this enclosure was at the eastern end. It was
closed by curtains of costly material and beautiful workmanship, though
inferior to those of the sanctuary. "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 347.

10. What objects stood in the court, and what was the purpose of these
things? Exodus 40:29-32.

"In the court, and'nearest the entrance, stood the brazen altar of burnt
offering. Upon this altar were consumed all the sacrifices made by fire unto
the Lord, and its horns were sprinkled with the atoning blood." -Patriarchs
and Prophets, p. 347.
"The laver was placed between the altar and the congregation, that
before they came into the presence of God, in the sight of the congregation,
they might wash their hands and their feet. What impression was this to
make upon the people? It was to show them that every particle of dust must
be put away before they could go into the presence of God; for He was so
high and holy that unless they did comply with these conditions, death would
follow."- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 614.

. The Priesthood
"I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye
shall be holy; for I am holy" (Leviticus 11:44).

"Everything connected with the apparel and deportment of the priests was
to be such as to impress the beholder with a sense of the holiness of God, the
sacredness of His worship, and the purity required of those who came into
His presence." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 351.

A SPECIAL CALLING January 14
1. Which tribe did the Lord choose for the work of the sanctuary, and
why? What was their work? Exodus 38:21; Numbers 1:48-53;
3:44, 45; 8:22.

"By divine direction the tribe of Levi was set apart for the service of the
sanctuary. In the earliest times every man was the priest of his own house-
hold. In the days of Abraham the priesthood was regarded as the birthright
of the eldest son. Now, instead of the first-born of all Israel, the Lord
accepted the tribe of Levi for the work of the sanctuary. By this signal honor
He manifested His approval of their fidelity, both in adhering to His service
and in executing His judgments when Israel apostatized in the worship of
the golden calf."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 350.

2. To which family was the priesthood restricted? Exodus 40:12-15.

"The priesthood ... was restricted to the family of Aaron. Aaron and
his sons alone were permitted to minister before the Lord."-Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 350.
D Monday
THE PRIESTLY GARMENTS January 15

3. Describe the dress worn by the priests. What was the meaning of
the priestly garments? Exodus 28:2, 4, 40-43; Zechariah 3:3-5.

"In accordance with their office, a special dress was appointed for the
priests. 'Thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, for glory and
for beauty,' was the divine direction to Moses. The robe of the common priest

-13 -
was of white linen, and woven in one piece. It extended nearly to the feet
and was confined about the waist by a white linen girdle embroidered in
blue, purple, and red. A linen turban, or miter, completed his outer costume."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 350.
"The God of heaven, whose arm moves the world, who sustains us and
gives us life and health, has given us evidence that He may be honored or
dishonored by the apparel of those who officiate before Him.... He gave
instruction even in regard to the arrangement of their houses and specified
the dress which those should wear who were to minister in His service. They
were to maintain order in everything and especially to preserve cleanliness."
- Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 210, 211.
"Very specific were the directions given in regard to Aaron's robes, for
his dress was symbolic. So the dress of Christ's followers should be sym-
bolic. In all things we are to be representatives of Him. Our appearance in
every respect should be characterized by neatness, modesty, and purity."-
Ibid., vol. .6, p. 96.

4. What lessons should we learn from the cleanliness required of the

priests? Exodus 19:15; Ephesians 5:25-27. What principle under-
lies the attitude to be manifested by the people of God, especially
when they come before the Lord? Exodus 3:1-5; Isaiah 1:16; 6:1-3.

"Moses at the burning bush was directed to put off his sandals, for the
ground whereon he stood was holy. So the priests were not to enter the sanc-
tuary with shoes upon their feet. Particles of dust cleaving to them would
desecrate the holy place. They were to leave their shoes in the court before
entering the sanctuary, and also to wash both their hands and their feet before
ministering in the tabernacle or at the altar of burnt offering. Thus was con-
stantly taught the lesson that all defilement must be put away from those who
would approach into the presence of God." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 350.
"That great and mighty God who created the beautiful Eden and every-
thing lovely in it is a God of order, and He wants order and cleanliness with
His people. That mighty God directed Moses to tell the people to wash their
clothes lest there should be impurity in their clothing and about their per-
sons as they came before the Lord."-Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 611.

D Tuesday
THE GARMENTS OF THE HIGH PRIEST January 16

5. Describe the garments of the high priest. Exodus 28:4, 9-12, 15

(first part); 29.

"The garments of the high priest were of costly material and beautiful
workmanship, befitting his exalted station. In addition to the linen dress of
the common priest, he wore a robe of blue, also woven in one piece. Around
the skirt it was ornamented with golden bells, and pomegranates of blue,
purple, and scarlet. Outside of this was the ephod, a shorter garment of gold,
blue, purple, scarlet, and white.... The ephbd was sleeveless, and on its

-14 -
gold-embroidered shoulder pieces were set two onyx stones, bearing the
names of the twelve tribes of Israel.
"Over the ephod was the breastplate, the most sacred of the priestly
vestments.... [Its] border was formed of a variety of the precious stones,
the same that form the twelve foundations of the City of God. Within the
border were twelve stones set in gold, arranged in rows of four, and, like
those in the shoulder pieces, engraved with the names of the tribes.... So
Christ, the great High Priest, pleading His blood before the Father in the
sinner's behalf, bears upon His heart the name of every repentant, believing
soul. "-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 350, 351.
6. What is written about the Urim and Thummim? Exodus 28:30.

"At the right and left of the breastplate were two large stones of great
brilliancy. These were known as the Urim. and Thummim. By them the will
of God was made known through the high priest. When questions were
brought for decision before the Lord, a halo of light encircling the precious
stone at the right was a token of the divine consent or approval, while a
cloud shadowing the stone at the left was an evidence of denial or disap-
probation." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 351.

HOLINESS TO THE LORD January 17

7. Describe the miter of the high priest. Exodus 28:36, 37. What
meaning does the inscription on the high priest's gold plate have for
us? 2 Corinthians 7:1.

"The miter of the high priest consisted of the white linen turban, having
attached to it by a lace of blue, a gold plate bearing the inscription, 'Holiness
to Jehovah.' "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 351.
"Let your souls answer the question, Does my character correspond to
the qualifications essential that I may receive a passport to the mansions
Christ has prepared for those who are fitted for them? Holiness must be
inwrought in our character."-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 446.

8. What was one of the most important commandments for the priest-
hood, and what was the purpose of that commandment? Leviticus
10:9-11. What was required not only of the priests but of the peo-
ple in general? Leviticus 11:44,45; 19:1,2.

"All who occupied positions of sacred responsibility were to be men of

strict temperance, that their minds might be clear to discriminate between
right and wrong, that they might possess firmness of principle, and wisdom
to administer justice and to show mercy.
"The same obligation rests upon every follower of Christ.... We are
required by God to preserve every power in the best possible condition, that
we may render acceptable service to our Creator. When intoxicants are used,
... the conscience will lose its sensibility to sin, and a process of hardening

-15 -
to iniquity will most certainly take place, till the common and the sacred will
lose all difference of significance."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 362.

PROFANITY AND WICKEDNESS PUNISHED January 18

9. How did the two sons of Aaron offend the Lord and what happened
to them? Leviticus 10:1; 2.

"Nadab and Abihu would never have committed that fatal sin had they
not first become partially intoxicated by the free use of wine.... Their
minds became confused and their moral perceptions dulled so that they
could not discern the difference between the sacred and the common."-
Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 361, 362.

10. How were the two sons of Eli punished because, as priests, they
greatly dishonored the Lord? What punishment was meted out to Eli
and to the whole nation? Why? 1 Samuel 2:12, 17, 34; 4:15-19, 22.

"It was not enough that the ark and the sanctuary were in the midst of
Israel. It was not enough that the priests offered sacrifices, and that the peo-
ple were called the children of God.... It is written that 'he that turneth
away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.' "-

The Services of the Sanctuary

"Thy way, 0 God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?"
(Psalm 77:13).

"Important truths concerning the heavenly sanctuary and the great work
there carried forward for man's redemption were taught by the earthly sanc-
tuary and its services."-The Great Controversy, p. 414.

D Sunday
THE PURPOSE OF THE SANCTUARY January 21
1. What was God's purpose in establishing the sanctuary and its ser-
vices? Exodus 25:8; 29:43. What communication and knowledge
was to be preserved among the people of Israel through the sanc-
tuary and its services? Exodus 29:45, 46.

"During his stay in the mount, Moses received directions for the building
of a sanctuary in which the divine presence would be specially manifested."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 313.
"Henceforth the people were to be honored with the abiding presence
of their King." -Ibid., p. 314.

2. How did the sanctuary service typify the way of God in dealing with
repentant sinners and with impenitent evildoers? Psalms 73:12-17;
77:7-13. What has been the responsibility of both ancient and
modern spiritual Israel with regard to the nations of the world?

"From a race of slaves the Israelites had been exalted above all peoples
to be the peculiar treasure of the King of kings. God had separated them
from the world, that He might commit to them a sacred trust. He had made
them the depositaries of His law, and He purposed, through them, to
preserve among men the knowledge of Himself. Thus the light of heaven
was to shine out to a world enshrouded in darkness, and a voice was to be
heard appealing to all peoples to turn from their idolatry to serve the living
God."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 314.
"Even though a church may be composed of poor and uneducated and
unknown persons, yet if they are believing, praying members, their influ-
ence will be felt for time and for eternity. If they go forth in simple faith,
relying upon the promises of the Word of God, they may accomplish great

-17 -
good. If they let their light shine, Christ is glorified in them, and the interests
of His kingdom are advanced. If they have a sense of their individual
accountability to God, they will seek for opportunities to work, and will
shine as lights in the world." -Selected Messages, book 1, p. 265.

D Monday
DAILY CONSECRATION January 22

3. How was the daily consecration of Israel as a nation expressed in

symbols? Exodus 29:38-42; Numbers 28:3-6; Leviticus 6:13.

"The daily service was performed at the altar of burnt offering in the
court of the tabernacle and in the holy place.... [It] consisted of the morn-
ing and evening burnt offering, the offering of sweet incense on the golden
altar, and the special offerings for individual sins." -Patriarchs and Prophets,
p.352.
"As the priests morning and evening entered the holy place at the time
of incense, the daily sacrifice was ready to be offered upon the altar in the
court without. This was a time of intense interest to the worshipers who
assembled at the tabernacle. Before entering into the presence of God
through the ministration of the priest, they were to engage in earnest search-
ing of heart and confession of sin. They united in silent prayer, with their
faces toward the holy place.... The hours appointed for the morning and
the evening sacrifice were regarded as sacred.... In this custom Christians
have an example for morning and evening prayer. While God condemns a
mere round of ceremonies, without the spirit of worship, He looks with great
pleasure upon those who love Him, bowing morning and evening to seek par-
don for sins committed and to present their requests for needed blessings."
-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 353, 354.

4. What sacrifices were offered every Sabbath? Numbers 28:9, 10.

D Tuesday
AT THE ALTAR OF INCENSE January 23

5. Wh8:t service was to be regularly performed at the altar of incense?

Exodus 30:7,8.

"In the offering of incense the priest was brought more directly into the
presence of God than in any other act of the daily ministration. As the
inner veil of the sanctuary did not extend to the top of the building, the glory
of God, which was manifested above the mercy seat, was partially visible
from the first apartment. When the priest offered incense before the Lord,
he looked toward the ark; and as the cloud of incense arose, the divine glory
descended upon the mercy seat and filled the most holy place, and often so
filled both apartments that the priest was obliged to retire to the door of the
tabernacle. As in that typical service the priest looked by faith to the mercy
seat which he could not see, so the people of God are now to direct their

-18 -
prayers to Christ, their great High Priest, who, unseen by human vision, is
pleading in their behalf in the sanctuary above." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 353.
"As we acknowledge before God our appreciation of Christ's merits,
fragrance is given to our intercessions. As we approach God through the vir-
tue of the Redeemer's merits, Christ places us close by His side, encircling
us with His human arm, while with His divine arm He grasps the throne of
the Infinite. He puts His merits, as sweet incense, in the censer in our hands,
in order to encourage our petitions. He promises to hear and answer our sup-
plications." - Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 178.

6. What warning does God give concerning the altar of incense, both
anciently and today? Exodus 30:9.

"Strange fire has been offered in the use of harsh words, in self-impor-
tance, in self-exaltation, in self-righteousness, in arbitrary authority, in
domineering, in oppression, in restricting the liberty of God's people....
All these things are strange fire."-Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 357, 358.

D Wednesday
A RULER OR A COMMON PERSON January 24

7. When a ruler or a common person sinned through ignorance, what

was to be done after repentance? Leviticus 4:22-35. There was a
different procedure in case of other sins. Explain. Leviticus 6:2-7.

"The broken law of God demanded the life of the transgressor. The
blood, representing the forfeited life of the sinner, whose guilt the victim
bore, was carried by the priest into the holy place and sprinkled before the
veil, behind which was the ark containing the law that the sinner had trans-
gressed. By this ceremony the sin was, through the blood, transferred in
figure to the sanctuary."- The Great Controversy, p. 418.

8. When a sin offering was made for a ruler or for one of the people,
how was the sin transferred in figure from the penitent to the priest
and from the priest to the sanctuary? Leviticus 6:25, 26; 10:17.

"In some cases the blood was not taken into the holy place; but the flesh
was then to be eaten by the priest, as Moses directed the sons of Aaron, say-
ing, 'God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation.' Levit-
icus 10:17. Both ceremonies alike symbolized the transfer of the sin from the
penitent to the sanctuary."-The Great Controversy, p. 418.

D Thursday
A PRIEST OR THE CONGREGATION January 25

9. What service was performed in behalf of any priest who happened

to sin and showed repentance, and how is this significant for min-
isters today? Leviticus 4:3-7.

-19 -
"Ministers need to come to Christ as little children. Seek Jesus, breth-
ren, confess your sins, plead with God day and night, until you know that for
Christ's sake you are pardoned and accepted. Then will you love much
because you have been forgiven much. Then you can point others to Christ
as a sin-pardoning Redeemer. Then you can present the truth from the
fullness of a heart that feels its sanctifying power."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 159.
"If we desire to reform others we must ourselves practice the principles
which we would enforce upon them. Words, however good, will be power-
less if contradicted by the daily life. Ministers of Christ, I admonish you:
'Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine.' Do not excuse sins in your-
selves which you reprove in others. If you preach on meekness and love, let
these graces be exemplified in your own life. If you urge others to be kind,
courteous, and attentive at home, let your own example give force to your
admonitions. As you have received greater light than others, so is your
responsibility increased." -Ibid., p. 160.

10. What can we learn from the sin offerings presented for the whole
congregation? Leviticus 4: 13-18.

"The church as a whole and individually should bring their motives

under faithful examination and compare their lives with the life and teach-
ings of the only correct Pattern."- Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 512.

Lessons From the Sanctuary

"Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world"
(John 1:29).

"The sacrificial service that had pointed to Christ passed away; but the eyes
of men were turned to the true sacrifice for the sins of the world. The earthly
priesthood ceased; but we look to Jesus, the minister of the new covenant."
- The Desire of Ages, p. 166.

DAILY CONSE~RATION January 28

1. What was the meaning of the daily sacrifice on the altar of burnt
offering? John 1:29; 1 Corinthians 15:3.

"Every morning and evening a lamb of a year old was burned upon the
altar, with its appropriate meat offering, thus symbolizing the daily conse-
cration of the nation to Jehovah, and their constant dependence upon the
atoning blood of Christ." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 352.

2. What is the significance of the fact that the offerings had to be

"without blemish"? Exodus 12:5; 1 Peter 1:19.

"God expressly directed that every offering presented for the'service of

the sanctuary should be 'without blemish.' The priests were to examine all
animals brought as a sacrifice, and were to reject every one in which a defect
was discovered. Only an offering 'without blemish' could be a symbol of His
perfect purity who was to offer Himself as 'a lamb without blemish and
without spot.' "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 352.

D Monday
A LIVING SACRIFICE January 29

3. What else does the daily offering represent besides the perfect pur-
ity of Christ? Romans 12:1.

- 21-
"The apostle Paul points to these sacrifices as an illustration of what
the followers of Christ are to become.... Weare to give ourselves to the
service of God, and we should seek to make the offering as nearly perfect as
possible. God will not be pleased with anything less than the best we can
offer. Those who love Him with all the heart, will desire to give Him the best
service of the life, and they will be constantly seeking to bring every power
of their being into harmony with the laws that will promote their ability to do
His will. "-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 352, 353.

4. What does the apostle Paul mean when he says that we should
prove the perfect will of God? Romans 12:2.

"All true reformation begins with soul-cleansing. It is by the washing of

regeneration and the renewing of the mind through the power-of the Holy
Spirit, that a change is wrought in the life.
"By beholding Christ we become changed.... In sincerity, in soul-
hunger, cry after God. Wrestle with the heavenly agencies until you have the
victory." -Sons and Daughters of God, p. 105.
D Tuesday
PRAYERS ASCENDING TODAY Januarf 30
5. What did the incense represent, and what does this mean to us?
Revelation 8:3; Hebrews 4:16.

"As the high priest sprinkled the warm blood upon the mercy seat while
the fragrant cloud of incense ascended before God, so, while we confess our
sins and plead the efficacy of Christ's atoning blood, our prayers are to
ascend to heaven, fragrant with the merits of our Saviour's character. Not-
withstanding our unworthiness, we are to remember that there is One who
can take away sin, and who is willing and anxious to save the sinner. With
His own blood He paid the penalty for all wrongdoers. Every sin acknowl-
edged ',before God with a contrite heart, He will remove."-The SDA Bible
Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 970.
"Let the families, the individual Christians, and the churches bear in
mind that they are closely allied to heaven. The Lord has a special interest in
His church militant here below. The angels who offer the smoke of the fra-
grant incense are for the praying saints....
"Morning and evening the heavenly universe behold every household
that prays, and the angel with the incense, representing the blood of the
atonement, finds access to God."-Ibid., p. 971.

6. What is one of our greatest needs while the door of probation is

open?-2 Corinthians 13:5; James 4:7-10.

"There is a necessity for close self-examination, and to closely investi-

gate in the light of God's word, Am I sound, or am I rotten, at heart? Am I
renewed in Christ, or am I still carnal at heart, with an outside, new dress

put on? Rein yourself up to the tribunal of God, and see as in the light of God
if there is any secret sin, any iniquity, any idol you have not sacrificed. Pray,
yes, pray as you have never prayed before, that you may not be deluded by
Satan's devices; that you may not be given up to a heedless, careless, and
vain spirit, and attend religious duties to quiet your own conscience."-
Messages to Young People, pp. 83, 84.

THE CANDLESTICK January 31

7. What did the candlestick with its seven lamps represent? Revela-
tion 1:20; 4:5; John 8:12.

"Christ 'loved the church, and gave Himself for it.' It is the purchase of
His blood. The divine Son of God is seen walking amid the seven golden
candlesticks. Jesus Himself supplies the oil to these burning lamps....
"No candlestick, no church, shines of itself. From Christ emanates all
its light. The church in heaven today is only the complement of the church
on earth; but it is higher, grander-perfect. The same divine illumination is
to continue through eternal ages. The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are
the light thereof. No church can have light if it fails to diffuse the glory it
receives from the throne of God."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White
Comments], vol. 6, p. 1118.

8. What warning is given to a church no longer faithful to its charge?

Revelation 2:4,5; Romans 11:20,21. What causes such a tragedy?

"Men follow their own perverse ways. They will not heed the words of
the Saviour. They take themselves into their own hands, rejecting reproofs
and warnings, until the candlestick is moved out of its place, and spiritual
discernment is confused by human ideas. Though deficient in service, they
justify themselves, saying, 'The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord
are we.' They set the law of God aside to follow the light of their own imag-
ination."-The Review and Herald, April 8, 1902.
"God calls upon those who profess to be His children to study these
words [found in John 17:19-23], to eat them, to live them. He calls upon
them to seek for unity and love, else the candlestick will be moved out of its
place."- Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 80.
"The losing of the first love is specified as a moral fall. The loss of this
love is represented as something that will affect the entire religious life. Of
those who have lost this love, God says that unless they repent, He will come
to them, and remove their candlestick out of its place. "-The SDA Bible Com-
mentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 957. .

will appreciate it." - The Review and Herald, July 16, 1895.

THE SHEWBREAD February 1
9. Name some significant points about the shewbread and their
parallels in the New Testament era. Exodus 25:30; John 6:47'-51,
58,63.

"The shewbread was kept ever before the Lord as a perpetual offering.
Thus it was a part of the daily sacrifice. It was called shewbread, or 'bread of
the presence,' because it was ever before the face of the Lord. It was an
acknowledgment of man's dependence upon God for both temporal and spir-
itual food, and that it is received only through the mediation of Christ. God
had fed Israel in the wilderness with bread from heaven, and they were still
dependent upon His bounty, both for temporal food and spiritual blessings.
Both the manna and the shewbread pointed to Christ, the living Bread, who
is ever in the presence of God for us." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 354.

10. When was the shewbread prepared, and what spiritual application
does this illustrate, especially for those who preach the Word?
1 Chronicles 9:32; 1 Peter 5:2 (first part).

"Our life is to be bound up with the life of Christ; we are to draw con-
stantly from Him, partaking of Him, the living Bread that came down from
heaven, drawing from a fountain ever fresh, ever giving forth its abundant
treasures. If we keep the Lord ever before us, allowing our hearts to go out
in thanksgiving and praise to Him, we shall have a continual freshness in our
religious life." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 129.

The Passover

"Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye
are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us" (1 Cor-
inthians 5:7).

"All the ceremonies of the [Passover] feast were types of the work of Christ.

1. Explain the instructions given to the people of Israel as they were

about to leave Egypt, and the Lord's provision in their behalf. Exo-
dus 12:2-6, 50, 51; Leviticus 23:5. What law concerning the first-
born was also renewed at that time? Exodus 13:2; Numbers 3:13.

"The dedication of the first-born had its origin in the earliest times. God
had promised to give the First-born of heaven to save the sinner. This gift
was to be acknowledged in every household by the consecration of the first-
born son. He was to be devoted to the priesthood, as a representative of
Christ among men. In the deliverance of Israel from Egypt, the dedication of
the first-born was again commanded."-The Desire of Ages, p. 51.

2. Who only was permitted to partake of the Passover emblems? Exo-

dus 12:43-49. What biblical principle thus upheld the sacredness
of the ordinance? 1 Corinthians 5:8-11.

ing character and motive." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 71, 72.

. 3. What timeless lessons did God teach through the blood of the Pass-
over lamb? Exodus 12:7,22-24; Hebrews 9:14; 1 Corinthians 5:7.

"Had the Israelites disregarded in any particular the directions given

them, had they neglected to separate their children from the Egyptians, had
they slain the lamb, but failed to strike the doorpost with blood, or had any
gone out of their houses, they would not have been secure. They might have
honestly believed that they had done all that was necessary, but their sincerity
would not have saved them. All who failed to heed the Lord's directions would
lose their first-born by the hand of the destroyer. "-Patrinrchs and Prophets, p. 278.
"By obedience the people were to give evidence of their faith. So all
who hope to be saved by the merits of the blood of Christ should realize that
they themselves have something to do in securing their salvation. While it is
Christ only that can redeem us from the penalty of transgression, we are to
turn from sin to obedience. Man is to be saved by faith, not by works; yet his
faith must be shown by his works."-Ibid., p. 279.

4. Name some points written about the sacrifice of the antitypical

Lamb of God and the New Testament ordinance in His honor. Mat-
thew 26:19, 20, 26-29; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25.

"Christ was standing at the point of transition between two economies

and their two great festivals. He, the spotless Lamb of God, was about to
present Himself as a sin offering, that He would thus bring to an end the
system of types and ceremonies that for four thousand years had pointed to
His death. As He ate the Passover with His disciples, He instituted in its
place the service that was to be the memorial of His great sacrifice. The
national festival of the Jews was to pass away forever. The service which
Christ established was to be observed by His followers in all lands and
through all ages."- The Desire of Ages, p. 652.

5. What has God directed regarding the ordinance of the Lord's Supper?
1 Corinthians 11:26. What relationship between the members and the
body is symbolized by the bread? 1 Corinthians 10:16, 17; 12:23-27.

"Christ designed that this supper should be often commemorated, in

order to bring to our remembrance His sacrifice in giving His life for the
remission of the sins of all who believe on Him and receive Him. This ordi-
nance is not to be exclusive, as many would make it. Each must participate
in it publicly, and thus say: 'I accept Christ as my personal Saviour. He gave
His life for me, that I might be rescued from death.' "- The Review and Herald,
June 22, 1897.

-26 -
"I was pointed back to the time that Jesus took His disciples away alone,
into an upper room, and first washed their feet, and then gave them to eat of
the broken bread, to represent His broken body, and juice of the vine to
represent His spilled blood. I saw that all should move understandingly, and
follow the example of Jesus in these things, and when attending to these or-
dinances, should be as separate from unbelievers as possible." - The Present
Truth, Nov. 1850, pp. 86, 87.

6. What preparations are needed by those who desire to partake of the

Lord's Supper in spirit and in truth (John 4:23)? John 13:13-15,
35; 1 Corinthians 1:10; 11:27-29.

"The ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper are two monumen-
tal pillars, one without and one within the church. Upon these ordinances
Christ has inscribed the name of the true God."-Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 91.
"These ordinances are established for a purpose. Christ's followers are
to bear in mind the example of Christ in His humility. This ordinance is to
encourage humility, but it should never be termed humiliating, in the sense
of being degrading to humanity. It is to make tender our hearts toward one
another."-The Review and Herald, May 31,1898.

PARALLELS FROM THE PASSOVER February 7

7. Explain the significance of how and with what the passover lamb
was to be eaten. Exodus 12:8, 11; John 6-:53,54,63.

"The ceremonies witnessed at Jerusalem in connection with the pas-

chal service-the night assembly, the men with their girded loins, shoes on
feet, and staff in hand, the hasty meal, the lamb, the unleavened bread, and
the bitter herbs, and in the solemn silence the rehearsal of the story of the
sprinkled blood, the death-dealing angel, and the grand march from the land
of bondage-all were of a nature to stir the imagination and impress the
heart." -Education, p. 42.
"The lamb was to be eaten with bitter herbs, as pointing back to the bit-
terness of the bondage in Egypt. So when we feed upon Christ, it should be
with contrition of heart, because of our sins. The use of unleavened bread also
was significant.... The leaven of sin must be put away from all who would
receive life and nourishment from Christ." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 278.

8. In what sense is there a parallel between the sign on the doorposts

of the Israelites and the sign on the forehead of Christ's followers
today? Exodus 12:26, 27; Ezekiel 9:4, 6; Revelation 14:1.

"The Israelites placed over their doors a signature of blood, to show

that they were God's property. So the children of God in this age will bear

ADDITIONAL SYMBOLS February 8

9. In the Jewish economy, what activities were to immediately follow

the Passover? Leviticus 23:5-11.

10. What did the presentation of the first fruits symbolize? What does
the Lord demand besides our tithe? 1 Corinthians 15:20, 23;
Romans 11:16.

"The sheaf of the first fruits, which at the time of the Passover was
waved before the Lord, was typical of the resurrection of Christ." - The Great
Controversy, p. 399.
"Besides the tithe the Lord demands the first fruits of all our increase.
These He has reserved in order that His work in the earth may be amply sus-
tained."-Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 384, 385.
"Our work needs tenfold more means now than was needed by the Jews.
. . . The followers of Christ should not wait for thrilling missionary appeals to
arouse them to action. If spiritually awake, they would hear in the income of
every week, whether much or little, the voice of God and of conscience with
authority demanding the tithes and offerings due the Lord."-Ibid., vol. 4, p. 474.

The Pentecost

"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:
and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea,
and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

"By prayer and confession of sin we must clear the King's highway. As we
do this, the power of the Spirit will come to us. We need the pentecostal
energy. This will come; for the Lord has promised to send His Spirit as the
all-conquering power."-Gospel Workers, p. 308.

FIRST FRUITS OF ALL THE HARVEST February 11

1. In the Hebrew economy, what feast came fifty days after the pre-
sentation of the paschal first fruits? Leviticus 23:15, 16.

"Fifty days from the offering of the first fruits, came the Pentecost,
called also the feast of harvest and the feast of weeks. As an expression of
gratitude for the grain prepared as food, two loaves baked with leaven were
presented before God." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 540.

2. What directions were given by the Lord regarding the offering that
was to be made and what was its meaning? Leviticus 23: 17.

"The Pentecost was a feast celebrated seven weeks after the Passover.
Upon these occasions the Jews were required to repair to the temple and to
present the first fruits of all the harvest, thus acknowledging their depen-
dence on the great Giver of all good, and their obligation to render back to
God, in gifts and offerings to sustain His cause, that which He had intrusted
to them." - The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. III, p. 265.

SAVOR AND SWEETNESS February 12
3. What else was to be offered with the two loaves at Pentecost?
Leviticus 23: 18-20. In what ways can we make such an offering
today? Psalm 50:14; Ephesians 5:2; Philippians 4:18.

-29 -
"Those who are truly connected with God, by reflecting the light of
heaven will have a saving power in the church and also in the world; for the
perfume of good deeds and truthful acts will make them of good repute,
even among those who are not of our faith. Those who fear God will respect
and honor such a character; and even the enemies of our faith, as they see
the spirit and life of Christ exhibited in their daily works, will glorify God,
the source of their strength and honor." - Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 356.

4. What spiritual lessons can we gain from the preparation guidelines

for meat offerings in general? Leviticus 2:1, 13; Matthew 5:13;
Colossians 4:6.

"The Lord requires of all who profess His name a strict adherence to
truth. This will be as salt which has not lost its savor, as a light amid the
moral darkness and deception of the world." - Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 356.
"All who would present themselves 'a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable
unto God' (Romans 12:1), must receive the saving salt, the righteousness of
our Saviour. Then they become 'the salt of the earth,' restraining evil among
men, as salt preserves from corruption.... You must be partakers of My
grace [Jesus says], in order to be a savor of life unto life. Then there will be no
rivalry, no self-seeking, no desire for the highest place. You will have that love
which seeks not her own, but another's wealth."-The Desire of Ages, p. 439.

PROVISION IN BEHALF OF THE POOR February 13

5. How was the day of Pentecost to be kept holy, and what character
qualities were cultivated during feast days such as this? Leviticus
23:21; Deuteronomy 14:29; 1 Peter 4:8-10.

"As a means of education an important place was filled by the feasts of

Israel. In ordinary life the family was both a school and a church, the parents
being the instructors in secular and in religious lines. But three times a year
seasons were appointed for social intercourse and worship. First at Shiloh,
and afterward at Jerusalem, these gatherings were held. Only the fathers
and sons were required to be present; but none desired to forgo the oppor-
tunities of the feasts, and, so far as possible, all the household were in atten-
dance; and with them, as sharers in their hospitality, were the stranger, the
Levite, and the poor."-Education, pp. 41, 42.
"Being thus taught the joy of true hospitality, the people were through-
out the year to care for the bereaved and the poor. And these feasts had a
wider lesson. The spiritual blessings given to Israel were not for themselves
alone. God had given the bread of life to them, that they might break it to the
world." -Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 220, 221.

6. When the harvest was reaped, what provision had to be borne in

mind in behalf of the poor and the stranger? Leviticus 23:22.

- 30-
"The law of God gave the poor a right to a certain portion of the pro-
duce of the soil. When hungry, a man was at liberty to go to his neighbor's
field or orchard or vineyard, and eat of the grain or fruit to satisfy his hun-
ger. It was in accordance with this permission that the disciples of Jesus
plucked and ate of the standing grain as they passed through a field upon the
Sabbath day. All the gleanings of the harvest field, orchard, and vineyard,
belonged to the poor." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 531.

THE PROMISED POWER February 14
7. What did Jesus say to the disciples in John 4:38, and what did He
have in view? Acts 1:8. What preparation was required before the
promised power could come? Acts 1:14.

"The Saviour was here looking forward to the great ingathering on the
day of Pentecost. The disciples were not to regard this as the result of their
own efforts. They were entering into other men's labors. Ever since the fall
of Adam Christ had been committing the seed of the word to His chosen ser-
vants, to be sown in human hearts. And an unseen agency, even an omnipo-
tent power, had worked silently but effectually to produce the harvest. The
dew and rain and sunshine of God's grace had been given, to refresh and
nourish the seed of truth. Christ was about to water the seed with His own
blood. His disciples were privileged to be laborers together with God." - The
Desire of Ages, p. 192.
"[The disciples] were of one accord. All differences had been put away.
And the testimony borne of them after the Spirit had been given is the same.
Mark the word: 'The multitude of them that believed were of one heart and
of one soul.' Acts 4:.32. The Spirit of Him who died that sinners might live
animated the entire congregation of believers. The disciples did not ask for a
blessing for themselves. They were weighted with the burden of souls."-
Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 20, 21.

8. What happened shortly after the ascension of Jesus? Acts 2:1-11.

"On this day of divine appointment, the Lord graciously poured out His
Spirit on the little company of believers, who were the first fruits of the
It . Christian church." - The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. III, p. 265.

A GREAT SPIRITUAL HARVEST February 15

9. What explanation did Peter give concerning the descent of the Holy
Spirit? Acts 2:14-24.

10. Describe the first spiritual harvest. Acts 2:36-41. What even
greater hope is connected with the prophesied outpouring of the
Holy Spirit in our days? Acts 3:19; Joel 2:23; Zechariah 10:1.

- 31-
"The Spirit came upon the waiting, praying disciples with a fullness
that reached every heart. The Infinite One revealed Himself in power to His
church. It was as if for ages this influence had been held in restraint, and
now Heaven rejoiced in being able to pour out upon the church the riches of
the Spirit's grace. And under the influence of the Spirit, words of penitence
and confessiQn mingled with songs of praise for sins forgiven. Words of
thanksgiving and of prophecy were heard. All heaven bent low to behold and
to adore the wisdom of matchless, incomprehensible love. Lost in wonder,
the apostles exclaimed, 'Herein is love.' They grasped the imparted gift.
And what followed? The sword of the Spirit, newly edged with power and
bathed in the lightnings of heaven, cut its way through unbelief. Thousands
were converted in a day." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 38.
"To us today, as verily as to the first disciples, the promise of the Spirit
belongs. God will today endow men and women with power from above, as
He endowed those who on the Day of Pentecost heard the word of salvation.
At this very hour His Spirit and His grace are for all who need them and will
take them at His word."- Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 20.
"Why do we not hunger and thirst for the gift of the Spirit, since this is
the means by which we are to receive power? Why do we not talk of it, pray
for it, preach concerning it?"-Ibid., p. 22.

"On that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you,
that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord" (Leviticus
16:30).

veiled the glory from his sight." - The Ministry of Healing, p. 437.

THE FEAST OF TRUMPETS February 18
1. Describe the holy convocation which the Lord established for the
first day of the seventh month in the Hebrew calendar. Leviticus
23:23-25. How did the Israelites celebrate this day after the
Babylonian captivity? Nehemiah 8:2, 9-12.

"This day was a festival, a day of rejoicing, a holy convocation, a day

which the Lord had commanded the people to keep with joy and gladness....
"The earlier part of the day was devoted to religious exercises, and the
people spent the remainder of the time in gratefully recounting the blessings
of God and in enjoying the bounties that He had provided. Portions were also
sent to the poor, who had nothing to prepare."-Prophets and Kings, p. 662.
2. Of what event was this feast a symbol? JoeI2:1; Revelation 14:6, 7.

"God's word must be fulfilled, that the proclamation of the Saviour's

coming should be given to all peoples, tongues, and nations. To William
Miller and his colaborers it was given to preach the warning in America.
This country became the center of the great advent movement. It was here
that the prophecy of the first angel's message had its most direct fulfillment.
The writings of Miller and his associates were carried to distant lands.
Wherever missionaries had penetrated in all the world, were sent the glad
tidings of Christ's speedy return. Far and wide spread the message of the
everlasting gospel: 'Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His
judgment is come.' ...
"As the message went from state to state, there was everywhere awak-
ened widespread interest. Many were convinced that the arguments from
the prophetic periods were correct, and sacrificing their pride of opinion,
joyfully received the truth." - The Great Controversy, p. 368.

THE DAY OF ATONEMENT February 19

3. In the Hebrew economy, what service was required once a year and
why? Leviticus 16:16-19, 30.

"The sins of Israel being ... transferred to the sanctuary, the holy places
were defiled, and a special work became necessary for the removal of the
sins. God commanded that an atonement be made for each of the sacred
apartments, as for the altar, to 'cleanse it, and hallow it from the unclean-
ness of the children of Israel.' "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.
"The whole ceremony was designed to impress the Israelites with the
holiness of God and His abhorrence of sin; and, further, to show them that
they could not come in contact with sin without becoming polluted."-The
Great Controversy, p. 419.

4. When did the yearly atonement take place? Leviticus 16:29-31;

23:27-32.

"Once a year, on the great Day of Atonement, the priest entered the
most holy place for the cleansing of the sanctuary. The work there performed
completed the yearly round of ministration."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.

THE FIRST STEP February 20

5. How did the high priest come before the Lord on the Day of Atone-
ment? Leviticus 16:3, 4. What did he receive from the congrega-
tion, and what attitude was required of them? Leviticus 16:5.

"Every man was to afflict his soul while the work of atonement was
going forward. All business was laid aside, and the whole congregation of
Israel spent the day in solemn humiliation before God, with prayer, fasting,
and deep searching of heart."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.

6. For whom did the high priest make an atonement first, and how?
Leviticus 16:6; Hebrews 9:7. What can we learn from this today?

"Those who profess to be servants of the living God must be willing to

'be servants of all, instead of being exalted above the brethren, and they
must possess a kind, courteous spirit. If they err, they should be ready to
confess thoroughly. Honesty of intention cannot stand as an excuse for not
confessing errors. Confession would not lessen the confidence of the church
in the messenger, and he would set a good example; a spirit of confession
would be encouraged in the church, and sweet union would be the result.
. . . I was pointed back to the children of Israel anciently and saw how pure
and holy the ministers of the sanctuary had to be, because they were brought
by their work into a close connection with God. They that minister must be

- 34-
holy, pure, and without blemish, or God will destroy them.... He is just as
holy and pure, just as particular, as He ever was. Those who profess to be
ministers of Jesus should be men of experience and deep piety, and then at
all times and in all places they can shed a holy influence."-Early Writings,

ESSENTIAL CLEANSING February 21

7. What was the high priest to do with the two goats received from the
congregation, and particularly the one that was "for the Lord"?
Leviticus 16:7-9, 15-17.

"On the Day of Atonement, two kids of the goats were brought to the
door of the tabernacle, and lots were cast upon them, 'one lot for the Lord,
and the other lot for the scapegoat.' "-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.
"The goat upon which fell the lot for the Lord was to be slain as a sin
offering for the people. And the priest was to bring his blood within the veil
and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat and before the mercy seat."- The Great
Controversy, p. 419.

8. How was the altar of incense to be atoned for? Leviticus 16:18, 19.

D Thursday
THE SCAPEGOAT February 22

9. What was the significance of the last symbolic step in the work per-
formed on the Day of Atonement? Leviticus 16:20-22, 26.

"Not until the goat had been thus sent away did the people regard them-
selves as freed from the burden of their sins." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.
"The scapegoat came no more into the camp of Israel, and the man who
led him away was required to wash himself and his clothing with water
before returning to the camp."-The Great Controversy, p. 419.
"While the sin offering pointed to Christ as a sacrifice, and the high
priest represented Christ as a mediator, the scapegoat typified Satan, the
author of sin, upon whom the sins of the truly penitent will finally be
placed." -Ibid., p. 422.

10. What important truths were taught through the services per-
formed on that day? Hebrews 8:1-5; 9:8-14. To what prophecy
does this final ceremony point? Revelation 20:1-3.

"Important truths concerning the atonement were taught the people by

this yearly service. In the sin offerings presented during the year, a substi-
tute ,had been accepted in the sinner's stead; but the blood of the victim had
not made full atonement for the sin. It had only provided a means by which
the sin was transferred to the sanctuary. By the offering of blood, the sinner

-35 -
acknowledged the authority of the law, confessed the guilt of his transgres-
sion, and expressed his faith in Him who was to take away the sin of the
world; but he was not entirely released from the condemnation of the law.
On the Day of Atonement the high priest, having taken an offering for the
congregation, went into the most holy place with the blood and sprinkled it
upon the mercy seat, above the tables of the law. Thus the claims of the law,
which demanded the life of the sinner, were satisfied. Then in his character
of mediator the priest took the sins upon himself, and, leaving the sanctuary,
he bore with him the burden of Israel's guilt. At the door of the tabernacle he
laid his hands upon the scapegoat and confessed over hini 'all the iniquities
of the children of Israel.' . . . And as the goat bearing these sins was sent
away, they were, with him, regarded as forever separated from the people.
Such was the service performed 'unto the example and shadow of heavenly
things.' "-Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 355, 356.
"When Christ, by virtue of His own blood, removes the sins of His peo-
ple from the heavenly sanctuary at the close of His ministration, He will
place them upon Satan, who, in the execution of the judgment, must bear the
final penalty. The scapegoat was sent away into a land not inhabited, never to
come again into the congregation of Israel. So will Satan be forever banished
from the presence of God and His people, and he will be blotted from exis-
tence in the final destruction of sin and sinners." - The Great Controversy, p. 422.

people and their rulers kept ... the Feast of Tabernacles." -Prophets and
Kings, p. 665.

2. What was the meaning of this festival? Leviticus 23:39.

"In the seventh month came the Feast of Tabernacles, or of ingather-

ing. This feast acknowledged God's bounty in the products of the orchard,
the olive grove, and the vineyard. It was the crowning festal gathering of the
year. The land had yielded its increase, the harvests had been gathered into
the granaries, the fruits, the oil, and the wine had been stored, the first fruits
had been reserved, and now the people came with their tributes of thanksgiv-
ing to God, who had thus richly blessed them." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 540.

COMMEMORATION AND REJOICING February 26
3. Describe what and how the Israelites commemorated during this
joyful time of encampment. Leviticus 23:40-43.

"The Feast of Tabernacles was celebrated.to commemorate the time

when the Hebrews dwelt in tents during their sojourn in the wilderness.
While this great festival lasted, the people were required to leave their

-37-
houses and live in booths made of green branches of pine or myrtle. These
leafy structures were sometimes erected on the tops of the houses, and in
the streets, but oftener outside the walls of the city, in the valleys and along
the hillsides. Scattered about in every direction, these green camps presented
a very picturesque appearance." - The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. II, pp. 343, 344.

4. For what three main reasons did the people rejoice and praise God
during the Feast of Tabernacles? Exodus 20:2; Deuteronomy 29:5;
Psalm 103:2,3.

"The people of Israel praised God at the Feast of Tabernacles, as they

called to mind His mercy in their deliverance from the bondage of Egypt and
His tender care for them during their pilgrim life in the wilderness. They
rejoiced also in the consciousness of pardon and acceptance, through the ser-
vice of the Day of Atonement, just ended."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 542.
"At peace with God, [the people] now came before Him to acknowledge
His goodness and to praise Him for His mercy. The labors of the harvest
being ended, and the toils of the new year not yet begun, the people were
free from care, and could give themselves up to the sacred, joyous influences
of the hour."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 540.

A LESSON FOR US February 27
5. Following the example of the Israelites, how should we express our
gratitude to the Lord for the deliverance obtained? Isaiah 43:25;
Psalm 98:1-6; 1 Peter 2:9.

"As the children of Israel celebrated the deliverance that God had
wrought for their fathers, and His miraculous preservation of them during
their journeyings from Egypt, so should we gratefully call to mind the
various ways He has devised for bringing us out from the world, and from
the darkness of error, into the precious light of His grace and truth."-
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 541.

6. What lesson should we learn from the willingness of the people of

Israel to attend the yearly festivals? Hebrews 10:25.

"With those who lived at a distance from the tabernacle, more than a
month of every year must have been occupied in attendance upon the annual
feasts. This example of devotion to God should emphasize the importance of
religious worship and the necessity of subordinating our selfish, worldly
interests to those that are spiritual and eternal. We sustain a loss when we
neglect the privilege of associating together to strengthen and encourage
one another in the service of God."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 541.
"If the children of Israel needed the benefit of these holy convocations
in their time, how much more do we need them in these last days of peril and
conflict! And if the people of the world then needed the light which God had
committed to His church, how much more do they need it now! ...

THE ANTITYPE February 28

7. What is the meaning of the words of Christ to the disciples in John

14:1-3? What "preparations" are being made now, both in heaven
and on earth?

"[Jesus assured the disciples:] For your sake I came into the world. I am
working in your behalf. When I go away, I shall still work earnestly for you.
I came into the world to reveal Myself to you, that you might believe. I go to
the Father to cooperate with Him in your behalf. The object of Christ's
departure was the opposite of what the disciples feared. It did not mean a
final separation. He was going to prepare a place for them, that He might
come again, and receive them unto Himself.... While He was building man-
sions for them, they were to build characters after the divine similitude."-
The Desire of Ages, p. 663.

8. In what sense was the Feast of Tabernacles also a typical or sym-

bolic festival? Matthew 13:30, 38-42.

"The Feast of Tabernacles was not only commemorative but typical. It

not only pointed back to the wilderness sojourn, but, as the feast of harvest,
it celebrated the ingathering of the fruits of the earth, and pointed forward
to the great day of final ingathering, when the Lord of the harvest shall send
forth His reapers to gather the tares together in bundles for the fire, and to
gather the wheat into His garner."-Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 541.

TWO CLASSES OF PEOPLE February 29

9. How does the Bible describe the two opposite classes of people that
wIll witness the second coming of Christ? Isaiah 25:9; Revelation
5:13; 6:15-17.

"To His faithful followers Christ has been a daily companion and fami-
liar friend. They have lived in close contact, in constant communion with
God. Upon them the glory of the Lord has risen. In them the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ has been reflected.
Now they rejoice in the undimmed rays of the brightness and glory of the
King in His majesty. They are prepared for the communion of heaven; for
they have heaven in their hearts." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 421.

-39 -
"At the coming of Christ the wicked are blotted from the face of the
whole earth-consumed with the spirit of His mouth and destroyed by the
brightness of His glory. Christ takes His people to the City of God, and the
earth is emptied of its inhabitants."-The Great Controversy, p. 657.

10. When and how will the antitypical Feast of Tabernacles take place?
Isaiah 26:2; Hebrews 11:16; 2 Peter 3:13.

"Let us remember that there is a grand meeting to take place ere long.
Everlasting life is before us, and the city of God. Angels of God will be there,
and Christ will be there." -Sons and Daughters of God, p. 363.
"In that day the redeemed will shine forth in the glory of the Father and
His Son. The angels of heaven, touching their golden harps, will welcome
the King, and those who are the trophies of His victory-those who have
been washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb. A song of triumph
will peal forth, filling all heaven. Christ has conquered. He enters the
heavenly courts accompanied by His redeemed ones, the witnesses that His
mission of suffering and self-sacrifice has not been in vain." -Ibid., p. 362.
"When the ransomed of the Lord shall have been safely gathered into
the heavenly Canaan, forever delivered from the bondage of the curse,
under which 'the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together
until now' (Romans 8:22), they will rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of
glory. Christ's great work of atonement for men will then have been com-
pleted, and their sins will have been forever blotted out." -Patriarchs and

"It Is Finished"

"When Jesus ... had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he
bowed his head, and gave up the ghost" (John 19:30).

"Though [the angels] did not then understand all, they knew that the
destruction of sin and Satan was forever made certain, that the redemption
of man was assured, and that the universe was made eternally secure."- The
Desire of Ages, p. 764.

ALL HEAVEN FILLED WITH WONDER March 3

1. What fearful scene did the whole universe behold during Christ's
agony, the night before His crucifixion? What cry was uttered from
the lips of the Saviour praying in Gethsemane? Matthew 26:39.

"As the Father's presence was withdrawn, [all heaven and the unfallen
worlds] saw Him sorrowful with a bitterness of sorrow exceeding that of the
last great struggle with death. The bloody sweat was forced from His pores,
and fell in drops upon the ground. Thrice the prayer for deliverance was
wrung from His lips. Heaven could no longer endure the sight, and a mes-
senger of comfort was sent to the Son of God.
"Heaven beheld the Victim betrayed into the hands of the murderous
mob, and with mockery and violence hurried from one tribunal to another.
. . . Oh, fearful scene! the Saviour seized at midnight in Gethsemane, dragged
to and fro from palace to judgment hall, arraigned twice before the priests,
twice before the Sanhedrin, twice before Pilate, and once before Herod,
mocked, scourged, condemned, and led out to be crucified, bearing the
heavy burden of the cross, amid the wailing of the daughters of Jerusalem
and the jeering of the rabble."-The Desire of Ages, pp. 759, 760.

2. What prayer, offered by Christ on the cross, filled all heaven with
wonder? Luke 23:34.

CHRIST'S VICTORY/SATAN'S DEFEAT March 4
3. When Christ completed the work that He had come to do, what did
He exclaim? John 19:30.

"Jesus cried with a loud voice, which struck terror to the hearts of His
murderers, 'It is finished. ' Then the veil of the temple was rent from the top
to the bottom, the earth shook, and the rocks rent. . . .
"Satan did not then exult as he had done. He had hoped to break up the
plan of salvation; but it was laid too deep. And now by the death of Christ he
knew that he himself must finally die."-Early Writings, pp. 177, 178. [Author's
italics.]

4. What significance did the cry "It is finished" have to the unfallen
worlds and angels? Colossians 1:20.

"To the angels and the unfallen worlds the cry, 'It is finished,' had a
deep significance. It was for them as well as for us that the great work of
redemption had been accomplished. They with us share the fruits of Christ's
victory.
"Not until the death of Christ was the character of Satan clearly revealed
to the angels or to the unfallen worlds. The archapostate had so clothed
himself with deception that even holy beings had not understood his prin-
ciples. They had not clearly seen the nature of his rebellion." - The Desire of
Ages, p. 758.

RIGHTEOUSNESS AND MERCY D Tuesday

LINKED TOGETHER March 5
5. What proclamation was made in heaven when Christ died? Revela-
tion 12:10.

"Satan saw that his disguise was torn away. His administration was laid
open before the unfallen angels and before the heavenly universe. He had
revealed himself as a murderer. By shedding the blood of the Son of God, he
had uprooted himself from the sympathies of the heavenly beings. Hence-
forth his work was restricted. Whatever attitude he might assume, he could
no longer await the angels as they came from the heavenly courts.... The
last link of sympathy between Satan and the heavenly world was broken."-
The Desire of Ages, p. 761.

6. Contrary to the position maintained by Satan, how did God show

that He could be just and merciful at the same time? Romans 3:24-
26; 2 Corinthians 5:18, 19.

"In the opening of the great controversy, Satan had declared that the
law of God could not be obeyed, that justice was inconsistent with mercy,

-42 -
and that, should the law be broken, it would be impossible for the sinner to
be pardoned.... Because he, after his rebellion, had been banished from
heaven, Satan claimed that the human race must be forever shut out from God's
favor. God could not be just, he urged, and yet show mercy to the sinner.
"But even as a sinner, man was in a different position from that of
Satan. Lucifer in heaven had sinned in the light of God's glory. To him as to
no other created being was given a revelation of God's love. Understanding
the character of God, knowing His goodness, Satan chose to follow his own
selfish, independent will. This choice was final. There was no more that God
could do to save him. But man was deceived; his mind was darkened by
Satan's sophistry. The height and depth of the love of God he did not know.
For him there was hope in a knowledge of God's love. By beholding His
character he might be drawn back to God."-The Desire of Ages, pp. 761,762.

D Wednesday
THE LAW OF GOD VINDICATED March 6

7. What other deception-which is strongly maintained by many pro-

fessed Christians-did Satan introduce? How did Christ warn His
followers against this deception? Matthew 5:17-20; Luke 16:17.
What did the apostles say on this point? Romans 8:7, 8; James
2:8-14; 1 John 2:4-6; 5:3.

"Another deception was now 'to be brought forward. Satan declared

that mercy destroyed justice, that the death of Christ abrogated the Father's
law. Had it been possible for the law to be changed or abrogated, then Christ
need not have died. But to abrogate the law would be to immortalize trans-
gression, and place the world under Satan's control. ...
"That the law which was spoken by God's own voice is faulty, that
some specification has been set aside, is the claim which Satan now puts for-
ward. It is the last great deception that he will bring upon the world. He
needs not to assail the whole law; if he can lead men to disregard one pre-
cept, his purpose is gained. "-The Desire of Ages, pp. 762, 763.

8. In what two steps is the righteousness of the law fulfilled in the true
believers? First step: Romans 5:18, 19; 2 Corinthians 5:21. Second
step: Galatians 2:20; Romans 8:1-4, 14.

"The law requires righteousness-a righteous life, a perfect character;

and this man has not to give. He cannot meet the claims of God's holy law.
But Christ, coming to the earth as man, lived a holy life, and developed a
perfect character. These He offers as a free gift to all who will receive them.
. His life stands for the life of men. Thus they have remission of sins that are
past, through the forbearance of God. More than this, Christ imbues men
with the attributes of God. He builds up the human character after the
similitude of the divine character, a goodly fabric of spiritual strength and
beauty. Thus the very righteousness of the law is fulfilled in the believer in
Christ. "-The Desire of Ages, p. 762.

OBEDIENCE OR DISOBEDIENCE? March 7

9. According to Bible prophecy, what will men presume to do with the

law of God? Isaiah 24:5. What consequence will God's true people
have to suffer? Revelation 12: 17; Psalm 11:3. /

"Men will surely set up their laws to counterwork the laws of God.
They will seek to compel the consciences of others, and in their zeal to
enforce these laws they will oppress their fellow men.
"The warfare against God's law, which was begun in heaven, will be
continued until the end of time. Every man will be tested. Obedience or
disobedience is the question to be decided by the whole world. All will be
called to choose between the law of God and the laws of men. Here the divid-
ing line will be drawn. There will be but two classes. Every character will be
fully developed; and all will show whether they have chosen the side of loyalty
or that of rebellion. Then the end will come."-The Desire of Ages, p. 763.

10. How will God vindicate His law and deliver His people? Romans
2:5,6; Malachi 4:1-4.

"When the time fully comes that iniquity shall have reached the stated
boundary of God's mercy, His forbearance will cease. When the accumu-
lated figures in heaven's record books shall mark the sum of transgression
complete, wrath will come, unmixed with mercy, and then it will be seen
what a tremendous thing it is to have worn out the divine patience. This
crisis will be reached when the nations shall unite in making void God's
law." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 524.

Our Great High Priest

"I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father,
but by me" (John 14:6).

through which He forgives sins."- The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Com-
ments], vol. 7, p. 912.

AN ADVOCATE WITH THE FATHER March 10

1. In the plan of salvation, what work is as essential as the death of

Christ on the cross? Isaiah 53:12 (last part); Romans 8:34 (last part).

"The intercession of Christ in man's behalf in the sanctuary above is as

essential to the plan of salvation as was His death upon the cross."- The
Great Controversy, p. 489.

2. What subject should be of the greatest interest to every member of

the church of God today? Hebrews 8:2; 9:11, 12; 4:14-16.

"All need a knowledge for themselves of the position and work of their
great High Priest. Otherwise it will be impossible for them to exercise the
faith which is essential at this time or to occupy the position which God
designs them to filL" - The Great Controversy, p. 488.

OUR ONLY INTERCESSOR March 11

3. Through whom, exclusively, do we have access to the Father? John

14:6; 1 Timothy 2:5.

"There are no sins that [God] will not forgive in and through the Lord
Jesus Christ. This is the sinner's only hope."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 7, p. 913.

-45 -
"Angelic perfection failed in heaven. Human perfection failed in Eden,
the paradise of bliss. All who wish for security in earth or heaven must look
to the Lamb of God."-Ibid., vol. 5, p. 1132.

4. What is Christ willing and able to do for us as long as the door of

probation is open? Hebrews 2:18; 7:25; 1 John 2:1, 2.

"Our great High Priest completed the sacrificial offering of Himself

when He suffered without the gate. Then a perfect atonement was made for
the sins of the people. Jesus is our Advocate, our High Priest, our Inter-
cessor. Our present position therefore is like that of the Israelites, standing
in the outer court, waiting and looking for that blessed hope, the glorious
appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.... Type met antitype in
the death of Christ, the Lamb slain for the sins of the world. The great High
Priest has made the only sacrifice that will be of any value.' '-The SDA Bible
Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 913.

WE MUST BE WILLING March 12

5. What must we be willing to do if we want Christ to be our Saviour?

Acts 16:31; 1 John 1:9; Hebrews 5:9. Why is it that many pro-
fessed believers do not have assurance of sins forgiven?

"Those who have not humbled their souls before God in acknowledging
their guilt have not yet fulfilled the first condition of acceptance. If we have
not experienced that repentance which is not to be repented of, and have not
confessed our sin with true humiliation of soul and brokenness of spirit,
abhorring our iniquity, we have never sought truly for the forgiveness of sin;
and if we have never sought we have never found peace with God. The only
reason why we may not have remission of sins that are past is that we are not
willing to humble our proud hearts and comply with the conditions of the
word of truth."- Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 636.
"Those who would share the benefits of the Saviour's mediation should
permit nothing to interfere with their duty to perfect holiness in the fear of
God."-The Great Controversy, p. 488.

6. What does acceptance of Christ involve? Matthew 16:24; John

15:5, 7, 10; 1 Corinthians 15:31.

"None are living Christians unless they have a daily experience in the
things of God and daily practice self-denial, cheerfully bearing the cross and
following Christ. Every living Christian will advance daily in the divine life.
As he advances toward perfection, he experiences a conversion to God every
day; and this conversion is not completed until he attains to perfection of
Christian character, a full preparation for the finishing touch of immortality."
- Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 505.

THE PRESENCE OF CHRIST WITH US March 13
7. Concerning the presence of Christ with us, what promise is given us
and on what condition? Matthew 28:20 (last part); John 14:15-17,
23; Acts 1:4.

"The Saviour's promise to His disciples is a promise to His church to

the end of time."-The Desire of Ages, p. 667.
"The lapse of time has wrought no change in Christ's parting promise
to send the Holy Spirit as His representative." - The Acts of the Apostles, p. 50.
"To the end of time the presence of the Spirit is to abide with the true
church."-Ibid., p. 55.

8. What does the Holy Spirit do to those who receive Him? John
14:26; 16: 13 (first part). What is the truth, and what factors enable
us to be established in it? John 14:6; 17:17; Psalm 119:142.

"The Bible is the standard by which to test the claims of all who profess
sanctification. Jesus prayed that His disciples might be sanctified through
the truth, and He says, 'Thy word is truth'; while the psalmist declares, 'Thy
law is the truth.' All whom God is leading will manifest a high regard for the
Scriptures in which His voice is heard."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G.
White Comments], vol. 5, p. 1147.
"The truth as it is in Jesus is obedience to every precept of Jehovah. It
is heart work. Bible sanctification is not the spurious sanctification of today,
which will not search the Scriptures, but trusts to good feelings and
impulses rather than to the seeking for truth as for hidden treasure. Bible
sanctification is to know the requirements of God and to obey them.'-'-Ibid.

D Thursday
CREDENTIALS March 14

9. By what criterion does Heaven show the contrast between God's

true people and those who merely profess to be Christ's followers?
Matthew 7:16, 23; Isaiah 8:20; Revelation 14:12.

"To a people in whose heart His law is written, the favor of God is
assured."-The Desire of Ages, p. 106.
"Those who claim modern sanctification would have come boastingly
forward saying, 'Lord, Lord, do you not know us? Have we not prophesied in
Thy name? and in Thy name cast out devils? and in Thy name done many
wonderful works?' The people here described, who make these pretentious
claims, apparently weaving Jesus into all their doings, fitly represent those
who claim modern sanctification, but who are at -war with the law of God.
Christ calls them workers of iniquity, because they are deceivers, having on
the garments of righteousness to hide the deformity of their characters, the
inward wickedness of their unholy hearts. Satan has come down in these last

-47-
days, to work with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that per-
ish. His satanic majesty works miracles in the sight of false prophets, in the
sight of men, claiming that he is indeed Christ Himself. Satan gives his
power to those who are aiding him in his deceptions; therefore those who
claim to have the great power of God can only be discerned by the great
detector, the law of Jehovah. The Lord tells us if it were possible they would
deceive the very elect. The sheep's clothing seems so real, so genuine, that
the wolf cannot be discerned only as we go to God's great moral standard
and there find that they are transgressors of the law of Jehovah." - The SDA
Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 5, pp. 1087, 1088.

10. What is the most important of all fruits that will distinguish gen-
uine Christians, even to the end of time? 2 Peter 1:4-7; 1 Corin-
thians 13:13; Matthew 5:44, 45.

"The children of God are those who are partakers of His nature. It is
not earthly rank, nor birth, nor nationality, nor religious privilege, which
proves that we are members of the family of God; it is love, a love that
embraces all humanity. Even sinners whose hearts are not utterly closed to
God's Spirit, will respond to kindness; while they may give hate for hate,
they will give love for love. But it is only the Spirit of God that gives love for
hatred. To be kind to the unthankful and to the evil, to do good hoping for
nothing again, is the insignia of the royalty of heaven, the sure token by
which the children of the Highest reveal their high estate."- Thoughts From
the Mount of Blessing, p. 75.
"The last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given
to the world, is a revelation of [Christ's] character of love." -Christ's Object

In the Holy of Holies

"The temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his
temple the ark of his testament" (Revelation 11:19).

"As the typical cleansing of the earthly [sanctuary] was accomplished by the
removal of the sins by which it had been polluted, so the actual cleansing of
the heavenly is to be accomplished by the removal, or blotting out, of the
sins which are there recorded."- The Great Controversy, pp. 421, 422.

CHRIST IN HIS SANCTUARY March 17

1. What did the early Adventists understand as they studied Daniel

8:14 in comparison with Hebrews 8:1-5; 9:23, 24?

"Now in the holy of holies [the early Adventists] again beheld Him,
their compassionate High Priest, soon to appear as their king and deliverer.
Light from the sanctuary illumined the past, the present, and the future."-
The Great Controversy, p. 423.

2. What else did the Adventists understand as they compared these

scriptures with Daniel 7:13 and Revelation 14:7?

"I saw the Father rise from the throne, and in a flaming chariot go into
the holy of holies within the veil, and sit down. Then Jesus rose up from the
throne, and the most of those who were bowed down arose with Him. 1 did
not see one ray of light pass from Jesus to the careless multitude after He
arose, and they were left in perfect darkness. Those who arose when Jesus
did, kept their eyes fixed on Him as He left the throne and led them out a lit-
tle way. Then He raised His right arm, and we heard His lovely voice saying,
'Wait here; 1 am going to My Father to receive the kingdom; keep your
garments spotless, and in a little while 1 will return from the wedding and
receive you to Myself.' Then a cloudy chariot, with wheels like flaming fire,
surrounded by angels, came to where Jesus was. He stepped into the chariot
and was borne to the holiest, where the Father sat. There 1 beheld Jesus, a
great High Priest, standing before the Father."-Early Writings, p. 55.

AN OPEN DOOR March 18

3. What is the meaning of the opening of the sanctuary in heaven?

Revelation 11:19; 3:7, 8.

"When Christ entered the holy of holies to perform the closing work of
the atonement, He ceased His ministration in the first apartment. But when
the ministration in the first apartment ended, the ministration in the second
apartment began. When in the typical service the high priest left the holy on
the Day of Atonement, he went in before God to present the blood of the sin
offering in behalf of all Israel who truly repented of their sins. So Christ had
only completed one part of His work as our intercessor, to enter upon
another portion of the work, and He still pleaded His blood before the Father
in behalf of sinners."- The Great Controversy, pp. 428, 429.

4. Since the door to the most holy place in heaven was opened, how
important is it for the people of God to follow by faith the work that
Christ is doing there for them? Revelation 11:1.

"In the typical service, when the high priest entered the most holy
place, all Israel were required to gather about the sanctuary and in the most
solemn manner humble their souls before God, that they might receive the
pardon of their sins and not be cut off from the congregation. How much
more essential in this antitypical Day of Atonement that we understand the
work of our High Priest and know what duties are required of us."-The
Great Controversy, pp. 430, 431.
"The grand judgment is taking place, and has been going on for some
time. Now the Lord says, Measure the temple and the worshipers thereof.
Remember when you are walking the streets about your business, God is
measuring you; when you are attending your household duties, when you
engage in conversation, God is measuring you. Remember that your words
and actions are being daguerreotyped [photographed] in the books of
heaven, as the face is reproduced by the artist on the polished plate....
"When we are doing our work remember there is One that is watching
the spirit in which we are doing it. Shall we not bring the Saviour into our
everyday lives, into our secular work and domestic duties? Then in the name
of God we want to leave behind everything that is not necessary, all gossip-
ing or unprofitable visiting, and present ourselves as servants of the living
God."-The SDA Bible Commentary [E.G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 972.

FOLLOWING CHRIST D Tuesday

INTO THE MOST HOLY PLACE March 19

5. What is the difference between the coming of the bridegroom to the

wedding and the return of the Lord from the wedding? Matthew
25:1-10; Luke 12:36.

- 50-
"The coming of Christ as our high priest to the most holy place, for the
cleansing of the sanctuary, brought to view in Daniel 8:14; the coming of the
Son of man to the Ancient of Days, as presented in Daniel 7:13; and the com-
ing of the Lord to His temple, foretold by Malachi [3:1], are descriptions of
the same event; and this is also represented by the coming of the bridegroom
to the marriage, described by Christ in the parable of the ten virgins, of Mat-
thew 25."-The Great Controversy, p. 426.

6. In what sense can we go with Christ to the marriage before His

return? Hebrews 8:6; 9:24-26; 2 Corinthians 5:10.

"The followers of Christ are to 'wait for their Lord, when He will return
from the wedding.' Luke 12:36. But they are to understand His work, and to
follow Him by faith as He goes in before God. It is in this sense that they are
said to go in to the marriage." -Ibid., p. 427 [Author's italics.].
"Those who, with a knowledge of the truth from the Scriptures, had
also the Spirit and grace of God, and who, in the night of their bitter trial,
had patiently waited, searching the Bible for clearer light-these saw the
truth concerning the sanctuary in heaven and the Saviour's change in
ministration, and by faith they followed Him in His work in the sanctuary
above. And all who through the testimony of the Scriptures accept the same
truths, following Christ by faith as He enters in before God to perform the
last work of mediation, and at its close to receive His kingdom-all these are
represented as going in to the marriage." - The Great Controversy, pp. 427, 428.

A WORK OF PREPARATION March 20

7. According to Malachi, how would the coming of the Lord to His

sanctuary take place? Why? Malachi 3:1.

"The coming of the Lord to His temple was sudden, unexpected, to His
people. They were not looking for Him there. "-The Great Controversy, p. 424.
[Author's italics.]

8. While Christ is in the sanctuary, what work must be accomplished

for His people before they can meet Him in peace? Malachi 3:2, 3.

"Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of Christ
shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of a holy God
without a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters must be
purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and
their own diligent effort they must be conquerors in the battle with evil.
While the investigative judgment is going forward in heaven, while the sins
of penitent believers are being removed from the sanctuary, there is to be a
special work of purification, of putting away of sin, among God's people
upon earth."- The Great Controversy, p. 425.

AFTER THE CLOSE OF PROBATION March 21
9. What will be the last act of Christ as our High Priest before He lays
off His priestly garments? By what ceremony was this act prefig-
ured? Leviticus 16:21, 22.

"Every case had been decided for life or death. While Jesus had been
ministering in the sanctuary, the judgment had been going on for the
righteous dead, and then for the righteous living. Christ had received His
kingdom, having made the atonement for His people and blotted out their
sins. The subjects of the kingdom were made up. The marriage of the Lamb
was consummated....
"Jesus tarried a moment in the outer apartment of the heavenly sanc-
tuary, and the sins which had been confessed while He was in the most holy
place were placed upon Satan, the originator of sin, who must suffer their
punishment."-Early Writings, pp. 280, 281.

the Wedding Garment?
"When the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had
not on a wedding garment" (Matthew 22:11).

"By the king's examination of the guests at the feast is represented a work

THE CLOSE OF PROBATION March 24
1. What parable teaches that there is to be an investigative judgment
before the close of probation? Matthew 22:1-14.

"Previous to the wedding the king comes in to see the guests, to see if
all are attired in the wedding garment, the spotless robe of character washed
and made white in the blood of the Lamb. Matthew 22:11; Revelation 7:14.
He who is found wanting is cast out, but all who upon examination are seen
to have the wedding garment on are accepted of God and accounted worthy
of a share in His kingdom and a seat upon His throne. This work of examina-
tion of character, of determining who are prepared for the kingdom of God, is
that of the investigative judgment, the closing work in the sanctuary above."
- The Great Controversy, p. 428.

2. What does the wedding garment represent? Revelation 3:18; 19:8.

"By the wedding garment in the parable is represented the pure, spotless
character which Christ's true followers will possess.... It is the righteousness
of Christ, His own unblemished character, that through faith is imparted to all
who receive Him as their personal Saviour."-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 310.
"By His perfect obedience He has made it possible for every human
being to obey God's commandments. When we submit ourselves to Christ,
the heart is united with His heart, the will is merged in His will, the mind
becomes one with His mind, the thoughts are brought into captivity to Him;
we live His life. This is what it means to be clothed with the garment of His
righteousness."-Ibid., p. 312.

TWO CLASSES OF BELIEVERS March 25
3. How can we show that, with our consent and cooperation, Christ is
imparting His character to us? 1 John 4:13; John 14:20,21; 2 Peter
1:3-8.

"Christ in His humanity wrought out a perfect character, and this char-
acter He offers to impart to us." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 311.
"The truth is to be planted in the heart. It is to control the mind and
regulate the affections. The whole character must be stamped with the
divine utterances. Every jot and tittle of the word of God is to be brought
into the daily practice.
"He who becomes a partaker of the divine nature will be in harmony
with God's great standard of righteousness, His holy law. This is the rule by
which God measures the actions of men. This will be the test of character in
the judgment." -Ibid., p. 314.
4. What will be the fate of those who profess to have the title but
neglect to obtain the needed fitness for heaven? Matthew 7:21;
8:12; 22:13.

"All these [professed followers of Christ] expect to be saved by Christ's

death, while they refuse to live His self-sacrificing life. They extol the riches
of free grace, and attempt to cover themselves with an appearance of
righteousness, hoping to screen their defects of character; but their efforts
will be of no avail in the day of God.
"The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin....
"Those who reject the gift of Christ's righteousness are rejecting the
attributes of character which would constitute them the sons and daughters
of God. They are rejecting that which alone could give them a fitness for a
place at the marriage feast."-Christ's Object Lessons, pp. 316, 317.

A SHORT TIME OF VISITATION March 26
5. What is one of the main reasons why the time of probation is being
extended and the return of Christ is being delayed? 2 Peter 3:9.

"Oh, that the people might know the time of their visitation! There are
many who have not yet heard the testing truth for this time. There are many
with whom the Spirit of God is striving. The time of God's destructive
judgments is the time of mercy for those who have had no opportunity to
learn what is truth. Tenderly will the Lord look upon them. His heart of mercy
is touched; His hand is still stretched out to save, while the door is closed to
those who would not enter.
"The mercy of God is shown in His long forbearance. He is holding
back His judgments, waiting for the message of warning to be sounded to
all. Oh, if our people would feel as they should the responsibility resting

upon them to give the last message of mercy to the world, what a wonderful
work would be done!"-Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 97.
6. What proclamation will be made in heaven when the work of the
gospel is completed? Revelation 16: 17 (last part); 22: 11.

"When the third angel's message closes, mercy no longer pleads for the
guilty inhabitants of the earth. The people of God have accomplished their
work.... Then Jesus ceases His intercession in the sanctuary above. He
lifts His hands and with a loud voice says, 'It is done' .... Every case has
been decided for life or death. Christ has made the atone~l1ent for His people
and blotted out their sins. The number of His subjects is made up."-The
Great Controversy, pp. 613, 614.
D. Wednesday
"AND THE DOOR WAS SHUT" March 27
7. What does the "shutting of the door" in Matthew 25:10-12 and
Luke 13:25-27 represent? Jeremiah 8:20. Why will many pro-
fessed Christians be shut out of the kingdom? Matthew 7:23.

"When the work of investigation shall be ended, when the cases of

those who in all ages have professed to be followers of Christ have been
examined and decided, then, and not till then, probation will close, and the
door of mercy will be shut. Thus in the one short sentence, 'They that were
ready went in with Him to the marriage: and the door was shut,' we are car-
ried down through the Saviour's final ministration, to the time when the great
work for man's salvation shall be completed."-The Great Controversy, p. 428.
8. What changes will take place in the world when the door of proba-
tion is closed? Daniel 12:1.

"It was impossible for the plagues to be poured out while Jesus offi-
ciated in the sanctuary; but as His work there is finished, and His interces-
sion closes, there is nothing to stay the wrath of God, and it breaks with fury
upon the shelterless head of the guilty sinner, who has slighted salvation and
hated reproof."-Early Writings, p. 280.
"When [Christ] leaves the sanctuary, darkness covers the inhabitants of
the earth. In that fearful time the righteous must live in the sight of a holy
God without an intercessor. The restraint which has been upon the wicked is
removed, and Satan has entire control of the finally impenitent.... As the
angels of God cease to hold in check the fierce winds of human passion, all
the elements of strife will be let loose. The whole world will be involved in
ruin more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old."- The Great
Controversy, p. 614.

A GLORIOUS CHURCH March 28
9. How does the Bible describe the condition of God's remnant people
who will be ready to meet Christ? 1 Corinthians 1:8; Ephesians 5:27.

- 55-
"God proves His people in this world. This is the fitting-up place to
appear in His presence. Here, in this world, in these last days, persons will
show what power affects their hearts and controls their actions. If it is the
power of divine truth, it will lead to good works. It will elevate the receiver,
and make him noblehearted and generous, like his divine Lord."-Testimo-
nies, vol. 1, p. 188.

10. When Christ returns to this planet, will He "make" us blameless or

is He to "find" us blameless? 2 Peter 3:14. What testimony will be
given concerning the righteous standing before the throne of God?
Revelation 7:14.

"The revelation of [Christ's] own glory in the form of humanity will

bring heaven so near to men that the beauty adorning the inner temple will
be seen in every soul in whom the Saviour dwells. Men will be captivated by
the glory of an abiding Christ." -Christ's Object Lessons, p. 420.
"Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself
in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in
His people, then He will come to claim them as His own."-Ibid., p. 69.

Special Project Offering
for a Chapel in the Dominican Republic
Situated between the Caribbean isles of Cuba and Puerto Rico is an island
discovered in 1496 by Bartolomeo Columbus, brother of Christopher Columbus
-the island of Hispaniola. Today, the nation of Haiti occupies the western
third of that land. Since 1844, the 48,442 square kilometers of the eastern
portion have been home of the Dominican Republic. The capital city of Santo
Domingo lies on the southeast coast. This was the site of the first Spanish
colony in the New World and it flourished to become the seat of many of the
western hemisphere's earliest institutions, including its first university. At
present, in Santo Domingo's 1,476 square kilometers dwell approximately
800,000 of the country's 8,170,000 million inhabitants.
Agriculture is the primary basis of the economy in this tropical nation
and Spanish is the national language. Approximately 950/0 of the people are
Roman Catholics, 20/0 are Protestants, and 30/0 are either Jewish or of other
religions, or they profess no religion at all. Although individual freedom of
worship and religious expression are permitted, the public educational insti-
tutions openly promote the teachings of Roman Catholicism.
Economic conditions on this island are not easy, and this has driven many
to emigrate to the United States of America. In the early 1970's, several per-
sons living in the area of New York and Boston learned about the SDA Reform!
Movement and zealously began sharing present truth with others. Shortlyafter-
wards, they returned to the Dominican Republic and continued presenting
the message of reformation wherever doors were opened. The message has
since spread to many areas of the country. In the capital city of Santo Domingo
there are now two properties owned by the church in two different locations,
where meetings for worship are held every Sabbath.
In one of these two places, the brethren are still assembling in a small
house; they do not yet have a proper chapel. As the number of interested souls
in attendance has been growing, a more appropriate building for worship is
urgently needed. Through the arduous labor and sacrifices of the brethren,
part of a chapel has already been erected. However, totally paralyzed by
lack of funds, the believers in the Dominican Republic have so far been
unable to complete the project. Having begun purely by faith, they do not
.yet possess the economic resources necessary to finish the construction of
this chapel to God's glory. Therefore, they are counting on the wholehearted
assistance of fellow believers from around the world.
Please consider the needs of the Lord's work in the Dominican Republic
when the Special Project Offering is gathered on March 30, 1996. Let us
give generously that there may stand in Santo Domingo-a city whose name
literally means "Holy Sunday"-a proper monument to Christ, His holy law,
and His true seventh-day Sabbath.
