An-Naba’a (78)
Translation: An-Naba’a (78)
‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي‬ ٢ ‫يم‬ ِ ‫الن َبإِ ال َْع ِظ‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َع ِن‬ ١ ‫ُون‬ َ ‫“ َع َم َي َت َسا َءل‬What is it they are raising question
about? Does that relate to the news of the
‫﴿﴾ ثُ َم ك ََّل‬ ٤ ‫ون‬ َ ُ َْ َ ‫َم‬ ‫ل‬ ‫ع‬ ‫ي‬ ‫س‬ َ
‫َّل‬ ‫ك‬ ﴾ ٣ ﴿ ‫ُون‬
َ ‫ف‬ ِ ‫ل‬ ‫ت‬ َ ‫خ‬
ْ ‫م‬
ُ ‫ه‬
ِ ‫ي‬ ‫ف‬
ِ ‫م‬ ‫ه‬
ْ ُ impending great event upon which they
‫ض‬ َ ‫ْاْل َ ْر‬ ‫نَ ْج َع ِل‬ ‫﴿﴾ أَل َْم‬ ٥ ‫ون‬ َ ‫ َس َي ْعل َُم‬stand in disagreement/disbelief? It should
٧ ‫أ َ ْو َتا ًدا‬
NOT be so; they are certainly going to
‫﴿﴾ َو َخل َ ْق َنا ك ُْم‬ ‫﴿﴾ َوالْ ِج َبا َل‬ ٦ ‫ ِم َها ًدا‬know the reality. Again, it should NOT be
‫﴿﴾ َو َج َعل ْ َنا‬ ٩ ‫﴿﴾ َو َج َعل ْ َنا َن ْو َمك ُْم ُس َبا ًتا‬ ٨ ‫اجا‬ َ
ً ‫ أ ْز َو‬so as they are certainly going to know the

facts. Is it not a proof of our
‫ار‬َ َ ‫ه‬ َ
‫الن‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ن‬ْ ‫ل‬ ‫ع‬
َ َ َ َ ‫ج‬ ‫و‬ ﴾ ٠
١ ﴿ ‫ا‬ ‫اس‬ً َ ‫ِب‬ ‫ل‬ ‫ل‬ َ ْ ‫ي‬ ‫لل‬ ‫ا‬ might/power/prowess that we have
‫َس ْب ًعا‬ ‫ف َْوقَك ُْم‬ ‫﴿﴾ َو َب َن ْي َنا‬ ١ ‫ َم َعا ًشا‬prepared the Planet Earth as a smooth
‫نزلْ َنا ِم َن‬ َ ١٣ ‫﴿﴾ وجعلْنا ِسراجا وهَاجا‬ surface to live upon; and used mountains
َ ‫﴿﴾ َوأ‬ ً َ ً َ َ َ َ َ ١٢ ‫ ِش َدادًا‬as pegs to maintain its balance and
‫﴿﴾ لِ ُن ْخ ِرجَ بِ ِه َحبًا‬ ١٤ ‫اجا‬ ً ‫ات َما ًء ث ََج‬ ِ ‫ ال ُْم ْع ِص َر‬stability? And we created you in different
kinds and in pairs (azwaajan – ‫)ازواجا‬, and
‫َان‬َ ‫﴿﴾إِ َن َي ْو َم ا لْف َْص ِل ك‬ ١٦ ‫ات أَلْفَا فًا‬ ٍ َ‫﴿﴾ َو َجن‬ ١٥ ‫ َو َن َبا ًتا‬made your sleep as a means of relaxation
ْ ‫﴿﴾ َي ْو َم ُين َف ُخ ِِف‬
‫ون‬ َ ‫ور فَ َتأ ُت‬ ِ ‫الص‬ ُ ١٧ ‫( ِميقَا ًتا‬sabatan – ‫ ;)سباتا‬and the night as a
َ‫أ‬
veil/covering; and made the day for seeking
‫ت‬ ْ ‫ن‬
َ ‫ا‬ َ ‫ك‬ َ ‫ف‬ ‫ء‬ ُ َ ‫ا‬ ‫م‬ ‫الس‬
َ ‫ت‬ ِ ‫ح‬َ َ ‫ت‬ ِ ُ ‫ف‬ ‫و‬ ﴾ ٨ ١ ﴿ ‫ا‬ ‫اج‬ ً َ ‫ْو‬ ‫ف‬ livelihood; and fixed above you numerous
‫﴾ إِ َن‬٢٠﴿ ‫ت َس َرا ًبا‬ ْ َ‫ِي ِت الْ ِج َبا ُل فَكَان‬ َ ِ ‫﴿﴾ َو ُس‬ ١٩ ‫ أ َ ْب َوا ًبا‬firmaments (shidadan – ‫ ;)شدادا‬and made
therein a hot , shining lamp (sirajan –
‫ني‬ َ ِ ‫غ‬ ‫ا‬ ‫لط‬ َ ِ ‫ل‬ ﴾ ١ ٢ ﴿ ‫ا‬ ‫د‬ ‫ا‬
ً َ ْ ‫ص‬ ‫ِر‬ ‫م‬ ‫ت‬ ْ ‫ن‬
َ ‫َا‬ ‫ك‬ ‫م‬ َ
‫ن‬ ‫ه‬ ‫ج‬
َ َ َ ‫ ;)سراجا‬and we sent down from the clouds
‫ُون‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َّل َيذُ وق‬ ٢٣ ‫يها أ َ ْحقَا ًبا‬ َ ِ‫ني ف‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َّل ِب ِث‬ ٢ ‫( َمآ ًبا‬mo’siraat – ‫ )معصرات‬abundant water to
grow thereby grains and vegetation and
‫يما‬ ً ِ َ ‫م‬ ‫ح‬ ‫ّل‬ َ ِ ‫إ‬ ﴾ ٤ ٢ ﴿ ‫ا‬ ‫ب‬
ً َ‫ا‬ ‫َر‬ ‫ش‬ ‫ّل‬َ ‫و‬ ‫ا‬ ‫د‬
ً َْ‫ر‬ ‫ب‬ ‫ا‬ ‫يه‬ ‫ف‬
َ ِ gardens with dense foliage (alfafan – ‫)الفافا‬.
َ
‫ون‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ إِنَ ُه ْم ك َا ُنوا َّل َي ْر ُج‬ ٢٦ ‫﴿﴾ َج َزا ًء ِوفَاقًا‬ ٢٥ ‫َساقًا‬ َ ‫ َوغ‬For sure, then, the coming time of
judgment is fixed; when the trumpet is
‫ل َش ْي ٍء‬ َ ُ ‫﴿﴾ َوك‬ ٢٨ ‫﴿﴾ َوك ََذ ُبوا بِآ َياتِ َنا ك َِذا ًبا‬ ٢٧ ‫ ِح َسا ًبا‬blown you would come forth in multitudes.
‫يدك ُْم إِ َّل‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ فَذُ وقُوا فَ ََل نَ ِز‬ ٢٩ ‫ أ َ ْح َص ْي َناهُ ِك َتابًا‬And the Universe will then be opened to
man and ways to enter would become
‫﴿﴾ َح َدا َق‬ ِ ‫ئ‬ ٣١ ‫ني َمفَا ًزا‬ َ
َ ‫﴾ إِ َن لِل ُْمت ِق‬٣٠﴿ ‫ عَذَ ا بًا‬visible; and all the powerful clans would be
‫﴿﴾ َوك َأ ْ ًسا‬ ٣ ‫أ َ ْت َرا بًا‬ ‫ب‬َ ‫﴿﴾ َوك ََوا ِع‬ ٣٢ ‫ َوأ َ ْع َنابًا‬uprooted and their dominance would turn
into a mirage; and the Hell would be in
‫يها لَ ْغ ًوا َو َّل‬ َ ِ‫ون ف‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ ّل يَ ْس َم ُع‬ َ ٣٤ ‫ دِ َهاقًا‬ambush for them, which is prepared as
‫﴿﴾ َر ِب‬ ٣٦ ‫ك َع َطا ًء ِح َسا بًا‬ َ ِ‫﴿﴾ َج َزا ًء ِمن َرب‬ ٣٥ ‫ك َِذا بًا‬
doom for the rebellious; they will remain
there for a long stretch of time; they will

َ ‫ات َو ْاْل َ ْر ِض َو َما بَ ْي َن ُه َما‬
‫الر ْح َمـ ٰ ِن ۖ َّل‬ ِ ‫او‬َ ‫الس َم‬
َ taste therein no coolness/comfort nor
anything to learn or absorb (sharb – ‫)شرب‬
ُ‫الروح‬ُ ‫ُوم‬ ُ ‫﴿﴾ َي ْو َم َيق‬ ٣٧ ‫ُون ِم ْن ُه ِخ َطا ًبا‬ َ ‫َي ْملِك‬ except burning despair and lamenting
‫ون إِ َّل َم ْن أَذِ َن لَ ُه‬ َ ‫َوال َْم َّلئِ َك ُة َصفًا ۖ َّل َي َتكَل َ ُم‬
darkness (ghassaaqan – ‫ساقا‬ ّ ‫ ;)غ‬a fitting
return (jiza’an wifaqan – ‫)جزاء وفاقا‬. It is
‫ِك ا ل َْي ْو ُم ال َْح ُق ۖ ف ََمن‬
َ ‫﴿﴾ ٰذَ ل‬ ٣٨ ‫الر ْح َمـ ٰ ُن َوقَا َل َص َوا ًبا‬
َ those who did not expect a time of
‫﴿﴾ إِنَا أَنذَ ْر َنا ك ُْم عَذَ ا ًبا‬ ٣٩ ‫َل َربِ ِه َمآ ًبا‬ٰ َ ِ‫َشا َء اتَ َخذَ إ‬
accountability to come and had denied our
message as lies, while we had taken into
‫ت َي َداهُ َو َيقُو ُل‬ ْ ‫نظ ُر ال َْم ْر ُء َما ق ََد َم‬ ُ ‫يبا َي ْو َم َي‬ ً ‫ق َِر‬ account every detail in writing; so they will
ُ ‫ا لْكَا ِف ُر َيا ل َْيت َِِن ك‬
﴾٤٠﴿ ‫ُنت ُت َرا ًبا‬ be asked to taste the fruit of your doing for
we shall only increase your torment as the
time passes.
Transliteration: Indeed, for the God-conscious there is
supreme status (mafazan – ‫)مفازا‬,
“’Ammaa yatasa’aloon; ‘an-in- spectacular surroundings with luscious
Naba’al-‘azeem; allazi hum fi-hi feelings (hadaa’iqan wa a’naaban – ‫حدائق و‬
mukhtalifoon. Kallaa, sa- ‫ ;)اعنابا‬noble and prominent companions
ya’lamoon; thumma, kallaa, sa- (kawaa’iba atraaban – ‫)کواعب اترابا‬, and
ya’lamoon. Alam naj’al-il-Ardha cups of happiness filled to the brim
mihaadan; wa al-jibaala awtaadan; (kaa’san dihaaqan – ‫ ;)کاسا دھاقا‬they will not
wa khalaqna-kum azwaajan; wa listen therein to frivolous talk or
ja’alna nowma-kum subaatan; wa prevarication (laghwan wa laa kizzaban –
ja’alna al-layila libasan; wa ja’alna ّ ‫ )لغوا و ال‬as a return from their
‫کذابا‬
an-nahaara ma’aashan; wa banayi- Sustainer and as a reward of their
na fawqa-kum sub’an shidadan; accountability. The Sustainer of the
wa ja’al-na siraajan wahhajan; wa Universe and the Earth and all that lies in
anzal-na min al-mu’siraati maa’an between is ever Merciful; none will have
thujjaajan, li-nukhrija bi-hi habban the authority from him to deliver sermons.
wa nabaatan; wa jannaatin It will be the stage when the Conscious Self
alfaafan. Inna yowm-al-fasli of man (al-Roohu – ‫ )الروح‬and the Divine
kaana meeqatan. Yowma powers/attributes (wa al-Malaa’ikatu –
yunfakhu fis-soori, fa-tatoona ‫ )والمالئکۃ‬would stand side by side together..
afwaajan; wa futihat-is-Samaau fa- No one would raise a voice except the one
kaanat abwaaban; wa suyyirat-il- authorized by the most Gracious and is
Jibaalu fa-kaanat saraaban; inna marked with righteousness. That would be
jahannama kaanat mirsaaedan; lit- the era of ultimate truth. Therefore,
taagheena ma’aaban; laabitheena whoever so wills, he may take a path of
fiha ahqaaban; laa yazuqoona fi-ha return (ma’aab – ‫ )مآب‬towards his
bardan wa la sharaaban; illa Sustainer. Verily, we have warned you all
hameeman wa ghassaqan; jazaa’an of the impending suffering when man shall

wifaaqan; inna-hum kaanoo la clearly see what he had sent ahead and
yarjoona hisaaban; wa kazzabu bi- when the denier of truth shall say: “Oh,
aayaatina kizzaban; wa kullu would that I was mere dust”.
shayin ahsayinaa-hu kitaaban; fa-
zooqu fa-lan nazeeda-kum illa Authentic meanings of some Important
‘azaaban. words:
Inna lil-muttaqeena mafaazan;
hadaa’iqa wa a’naaban; wa Ha-Dal-Qaf = To look at a thing, look hardly
kawa’iba atraaban; wa kaa’san or intently and roll one's eye's at a person or
thing, to surround/encompass/encircle a
dihaaqan. La yasma’oona fi-ha person or thing; to surround, encircle,
laghwan wa la kizzaban; jazaa’am encompass; a dense and luxuriant garden.
min Rabbi-ka ‘ataa’an hisaaban. Ayn-Nun-Ba = to produce grapes, grape.
Rabb-is-Samaawaati wal-Ardhi wa Bunch of grapes, nightshade; currant; adj.
ma bayina-huma ar-Rahmaani, la luscious; having a sweet taste;
yamlikoona min-hu khitaaban;
yowma yaqoom-ur-Roohu wa al-
Malaa’ikatu saffan, la
yatakallamoona illa man azina la-
hu ar-Rahmaanu wa qaala
sawaaban; dhaalika-al-yowm-ul-
haqqu, fa-man shaa’a attakhadha
ilaa Rabbi-hi ma’aaban. Inna
andharnaa-kum ‘azaaban qareeban
yowma yanzur-ul-mar’u ma
qaddamat yadaa-hu wa yaqool-ul-
kaafiru ya layitani kuntu turaaba.”

Chapter An-Naazi’aat
(79) Translation: An-Naaziaat (79)

ِ ‫اشطَا‬
‫ت‬ ِ َّ‫﴾ َوالن‬١﴿ ‫ت َغ ْرقًا‬ ِ ‫َوالنَّا ِزعَا‬ “Consider those communities who
ِ ‫سابِقَا‬
‫ت‬ َّ ‫﴾ فَال‬٣﴿‫س ْب ًحا‬
َ ‫ت‬ ِ ‫سابِ َحا‬ َّ ‫﴾ َوال‬٢﴿ ‫شطًا‬ ْ َ‫ن‬ carry on their disputes vehemently and
‫﴾ يَ ْو َم ت َْرجف‬٥﴿ ‫ت أَ ْم ًرا‬ِ ‫﴾ فَا ْلم َدبِّ َرا‬٤﴿ ‫س ْبقًا‬ َ confront their rivals violently and thus
‫وب يَ ْو َمئِ ٍذ‬ َ ْ
ٌ ‫﴾ قل‬٧﴿ ‫﴾ تتبَع َها ال َّرا ِدفة‬٦﴿ ‫اجفة‬َ َ ِ ‫ال َّر‬ manage their ascension (an-Naazi’aati
﴾٩﴿ ‫اش َعة‬ِ ‫صارھَا َخ‬ َ ‫﴾أَ ْب‬٨﴿ ٌ‫اجفَة‬ ِ ‫َو‬ gharqan – ‫ت غرقا‬ ِ ‫ ;)النازعا‬and those
‫﴾أَإِ َذا‬١٠﴿ ‫يَقولونَ أَإِنَّا لَ َم ْردودونَ فِي ا ْل َحافِ َر ِة‬ communities who acting with vigour

ٌ‫﴾ قَالوا تِ ْلكَ إِ ًذا َك َّرة‬١١﴿ ً‫كنَّا ِعظَا ًما نَّ ِخ َرة‬ and steadiness, concentrate on
ٌ‫زَج َرة‬ ْ ‫﴾فَإِن َّ َما ِھ َي‬١٢﴿ ٌ‫اس َرة‬ ِ ‫َخ‬ acquisition of their goals (an-Nashitaati
﴾١٤﴿ ‫سا ِھ َر ِة‬ َّ ‫﴾ فإِذا ھم بِال‬١٣﴿ ٌ‫اح َدة‬َ َ ِ ‫َو‬ nashtan –‫ ;)الناشطات نشطا‬and those
‫﴾ إِذ نَادَاه َربُّه‬١٥﴿ ‫سى‬ ْ َ ‫َھ ْل أتَاكَ َح ِديث مو‬ َ
communities who exercise toil and
َ‫﴾ اذھ َْب إِلَى فِ ْرع َْون‬١٦﴿ ‫س ط ًوى‬ ْ ِ ‫بِا ْل َوا ِد ا ْلمقَ َّد‬ resources in performing their duties
‫﴾ فَق ْل ھَل لَّكَ إِلَى أَن‬١٧﴿ ‫إِنَّه طَ َغى‬ diligently (as-Saabihaati sabhann –
َ‫﴾ َوأَ ْھ ِديَكَ إِلَى َربِّك‬١٨﴿ ‫تَزَ َّكى‬
‫ت سبحا‬
ِ ‫ ;)السابحا‬so, these are the advancing
َ ‫﴾ فَ َك َّذ‬٢٠﴿ ‫﴾ فَأ َ َراه ْاْليَةَ ا ْلك ْب َرى‬١٩﴿ ‫فَت َْخشَى‬
‫ب‬
and surpassing communities who
‫﴾ فَ َحش ََر‬٢٢﴿ ‫س َعى‬ ْ َ‫﴾ث َّم أَ ْدبَ َر ي‬٢١﴿ ‫َصى‬ َ ‫َوع‬
َ
‫﴾ فَقَا َل أنَا َربُّكم‬٢٣﴿ ‫فَنَادَى‬ outstrip others (fas-Saabiqaati sabaqan
‫﴾ فَأ َ َخ َذه اللَّـه نَ َكا َل ْاْل ِخ َر ِة‬٢٤﴿ ‫ْاْلَ ْعلَى‬ – ‫ت سبقا‬ ِ ‫)فاالسابقا‬, and then strengthen
‫﴾ إِنَّ فِي َذلِكَ لَ ِع ْب َرةً لِّ َمن‬٢٥﴿ ‫َو ْاْلولَى‬ their positions by deliberating upon
﴾٢٦﴿ ‫يَ ْخشَى‬ vigilance and pursuance of their policies
‫﴾ َرفَ َع‬٢٧﴿‫س َماء ۚ بَنَاھَا‬ َ
َّ ‫ش ُّد َخ ْلقًا أ ِم ال‬ َ َ‫أَأَنت ْم أ‬ (fal-Mudabbiraati amran – ‫ت امرا‬ ِ ‫)فالمدبرا‬.
‫ش لَ ْيلَ َها َوأَ ْخ َر َج‬ َ َ‫﴾ َوأَ ْغط‬٢٨﴿ ‫س َّواھَا‬ َ َ‫س ْم َك َها ف‬ َ However, a time will come upon all of them
َ‫ض بَ ْع َد َذلِك‬ َ ‫ر‬ْ َ ْ
‫اْل‬ ‫و‬
َ ﴾ ٢٩ ﴿ ‫َا‬
‫ھ‬ ‫ا‬ ‫ح‬َ ‫ض‬ when a violent tremor would cause
‫﴾ أَ ْخ َر َج ِم ْن َها َما َءھَا‬٣٠﴿ ‫د ََحاھَا‬ convulsion (tarjufu ar-raajifah – ‫ترجف‬
‫﴾ َمتَاعًا‬٣٢﴿ ‫ساھَا‬ َ ‫﴾ َوا ْل ِجبَا َل أَ ْر‬٣١﴿ ‫َو َم ْرعَاھَا‬ ‫)الراجفہ‬
ِ upon them, and then a chain of
﴾٣٣﴿ ‫لَّك ْم َو ِْلَ ْن َعا ِمك ْم‬ events would follow (tatba’u-ha ar-
‫﴾ يَ ْو َم يَتَ َذ َّكر‬٣٤﴿ ‫ت الطَّا َّمة ا ْلك ْب َرى‬ ِ ‫فَإ ِ َذا َجا َء‬ Raadifah –‫)تتبعها الرا ِدفۃ‬. In that stage, hearts
‫ت ا ْل َج ِحيم لِ َمن‬ ِ َ‫﴾ َوب ِّرز‬٣٥﴿ ‫س َعى‬ َ ‫سان َما‬ َ ‫اْلن‬ ِْ would throb (wajifah – ‫)واجفۃ‬ ِ and thoughts
َ‫﴾ َوآثَ َر ا ْل َحيَاة‬٣٧﴿ ‫﴾فَأ َ َّما َمن طَ َغى‬٣٦﴿ ‫يَ َرى‬ and vision would become fearful (absaaru-
‫﴾ فَإِنَّ ا ْل َج ِحي َم ِھ َي‬٣٨﴿ ‫ال ُّد ْنيَا‬ ha khaashi’ah- ‫)ابصارھا خاشعۃ‬. And they
‫﴾ َوأَ َّما َمنْ َخافَ َمقَا َم َربِّ ِه َونَ َهى‬٣٩﴿ ‫ا ْل َمأْ َوى‬ would wonder if they have been returned
‫﴾ فَإِنَّ ا ْل َجنَّةَ ِھ َي‬٤٠﴿‫َن ا ْل َه َوى‬ ِ ‫سع‬ َ ‫النَّ ْف‬ to a pathetic state of lower life (al-haafrah -
َ‫سا َع ِة أَيَّان‬ َّ ‫َن ال‬ ِ ‫سأَلونَكَ ع‬ ْ َ‫﴾ ي‬٤١﴿ ‫ا ْل َمأْ َوى‬ ‫ ;)الحافرة‬even though we had been reduced
‫﴾ إِلَى‬٤٣﴿ ‫﴾ فِي َم أَنتَ ِمن ِذ ْك َراھَا‬٤٢﴿ ‫ساھَا‬ َ ‫م ْر‬ to a heap of crumbling bones (kunnaa
َ َّ
‫﴾ إِن َما أنتَ من ِذر َمن‬٤٤﴿‫َربِّكَ منت َهاھَا‬ َ ‘izaaman nakhiratun –‫نخرة‬ ِ ‫) کنّا عظاما‬. They
َّ‫﴾ َكأَنَّه ْم يَ ْو َم يَ َر ْونَ َها لَ ْم يَ ْلبَثوا إِال‬٤٥﴿ ‫يَ ْخشَاھَا‬ would say if this is the return to life, this
﴾٤٦﴿ ‫َشيَّةً أَ ْو ض َحاھَا‬ ِ ‫ع‬ indeed is a hopeless return (khaasirah -
‫)خاسرة‬. There was but a single loud
Transliteration: proclamation (zajratun wahidatun – ‫زجرة‬
“Wan-Naazi’aati gharqan; wan- ‫ )واحدة‬and as if they were awakened from a
Naashitaati nashtan; Was- deep sleep (bis-saahirah -‫ساھرة‬ ّ ‫) بال‬.
Saabihaati sabhan; fa-as- Did the episode of Moses reach you? If so,
Saabihaati sabhan; fa al- recall the time when his Sustainer called
Mudabbiraati amran. Youma upon him in a lound voice full of holiness
tarjufur-raajifah; tatba’u-ha ar- and purity (bil-waad-il-Muqaddas – ‫بالواد‬
raadifah; quloobun youma’izin ‫ )المقدس‬and ordered to end his wandering
wajifah; absaaru-ha khaashi’ah. (tawaa – ‫ )طوی‬for a positive and decisive

Yaqooloona a’inna la-mardudoona step against the evil. He said, “Go to the
fil-haafirah; a’izaa kunna ‘izaaman Faroah who has indeed become oppressive
nakhirah; Qaaloo tilka izaa and asked him if he is desirous of his
karratan khaasirah; Fa-inna-ma reform and purity, as you are to turn his
hiya zajratan wahidatan, fa-izaa attention to your Sustainer’s guidance; he

They would question you about the
arrival of that stage. How could you
know about the time of its occurrence.
The knowledge of its start and end is
known only to your Sustainer. In fact,
you are but a warner to those who have
due recognizance of HIM in their
hearts. When that stage is launched,
they would feel like they have waited for
its occurrence not even for an evening
or a day.”

unsound state, to shed a thing.
Siin-ha-Ra : ‫ الساھرة‬:‫ =س ھ ر‬to be watchful, spend
the night awake, flash by night. sahiratun - surface of

Translation: ‘Abasa (80)

َ َ ١ ‫َعبس و َتو ََل‬ “If SOMEONE is approached by one


‫يك‬َ ‫﴿﴾ َو َما يُ ْد ِر‬ ٢ ‫َم‬ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ أن َجا َءهُ ْاْل ْع‬ ٰ َ َ َ َ looking worthless and deprived of

may frown and turn him away? How can
you be made aware that this is not the right

ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ َو ُه َو يَخ‬
‫َْش‬ ٨ ‫ع‬ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ َوأ َما َمن َجا َءكَ يَ ْس‬ ٰ َ conduct as he may show enough mental

١ ‫﴾ ك ََّل إِنَ َها تَذْ ك َِرة‬١٠﴿ ‫ّه‬ ٰ َ َ ‫نت َع ْن ُه َتل‬
maturity to acquire growth and progress;
﴾﴿ َ ‫﴿﴾ فَأ‬ or may exert so much that this Guidance

‫ي َش ْي ٍء َخل َ َق ُه‬ َ ١٧ ُ‫ان َما أَكْف ََره‬
ِ ‫﴿﴾ ِم ْن أ‬ ُ ‫نس‬ َ ‫اْل‬ ِ ْ ‫ِل‬َ ‫قُت‬ himself to be self-sufficient, and you pay
full attention to his learning; And still he
‫لس ِبي َل‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ ُث َم ا‬ ١٩ ُ‫﴿﴾ ِمن نُ ْط َف ٍة َخل َ َق ُه فَق ََد َره‬ ١٨ may not show mental progress, so how is
‫﴿﴾ ثُ َم إِذَا َشا َء‬ َ َ
٢١ ُ‫ْبه‬ َ َ ‫﴾ ثُ َم أ َما َت ُه فَأق‬٢٠﴿ ُ‫َي َس َره‬
this failure going to reflect upon your
accountability?
‫نظ ِر‬ ُ ‫﴿﴾ فَل ْ َي‬٢٣ ُ‫﴿﴾ ك ََّل لَمَا َي ْق ِض َما أ َ َم َره‬ ٢ ُ‫نش َره‬ َ َ‫أ‬ And, as for him who gained access unto
﴾﴿ ٢٥ ‫﴿﴾ أَنَا َص َب ْب َنا ال َْما َء َص ًبا‬ ٢٤ ‫َل َط َعا ِم ِه‬ٰ َ ِ‫ان إ‬ُ ‫نس‬ َ ‫اْل‬

thee and is eager to make efforts, and is in
awe [of God], would you hold him in utter
﴾﴿ ٢٧ ‫يها َحبًا‬ َ ٢٦ ‫ض َش ًقا‬ َ ‫ثُ َم َش َق ْق َنا ْاْل َ ْر‬
َ ِ‫نب ْت َنا ف‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ فَأ‬ disregard! NAY, VERILY, these teachings
‫﴿﴾ َو َح َدائِ َق‬ ٢٩ ‫﴿﴾ َو َزيْ ُتو ًنا َونَ ْخ ًّل‬ ٢٨ ‫َض ًبا‬ ْ ‫َو ِع َن ًبا َوق‬
consist of general guidance and
remembrance; so whoever is willing to do
‫﴿﴾ َم َتاعًا لَك ُْم‬ ٣١ ‫﴾ َوفَا ك َِه ًة َوأَبًا‬٣٠﴿ ‫غُل ًْبا‬ so may learn and keep in mind. These are
‫﴿﴾ َي ْو َم َي ِف ُر‬ َ ‫الص‬
٣ ‫اخ ُة‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ فَإِذَا َجا َء ِت‬ ٣٢ ‫َو ِْلَنْ َعا ِمك ُْم‬ preserved in sacred scrolls worthy of
dignity, loftiness and purity, and are
‫﴿﴾ َو َصا ِح َب ِت ِه‬ ٣٥ ‫﴿﴾ َوأ ُ ِم ِه َوأ َ ِبي ِه‬ ٣٤ ‫ال َْم ْر ُء ِم ْن أ َ ِخي ِه‬ written by the hands of noble and most
‫هْن َي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ َشأْن ُي ْغ ِني ِه‬ ْ ُ ْ ‫ئ ِم‬ ٍ ‫﴿﴾ لِك ُ ِل ا ْم ِر‬ ٣٦ ‫َو َب ِني ِه‬ virtuous scroll writers.
In fact man’s mental faculties are often
‫﴿﴾ َضا ِحكَة ُم ْس َت ْب ِش َرة‬
٣٨ ‫﴿﴾ ُو ُجوه َي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ ُم ْس ِف َرة‬
٣٧ destroyed by his denial of the truth. He
َ َ ‫﴾ َت ْر َهق َُها ق‬٤٠﴿ ‫َبة‬
‫َتة‬ َ َ ‫﴿﴾ َو ُو ُجوه َي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ َعل َْي َها غ‬ ٣٩
must remember of what substance God has
created him? Out of a drop of sperm He
﴾﴿٤٢ ُ‫كف ََرةُ ا لْ َف َج َرة‬
َ ْ‫ك ُه ُم ال‬ ُ ٤١
َ ‫﴿﴾ أو لَـ ٰ ِئ‬ created him, and thereupon determined his
nature and balance, and then made his way
through life easily available to him; and in
Transliteration: the end He caused him to die and brought
him to the intermediate state in which the
“Abasa wa tawalla; an jaa’a—hu soul lives after death till the resurrection
al-a’maa; wa ma yudreeka la-alla- (‫ ; )أَ ْقبَ َره‬and then, when He so willed, He
hu yazzakkaa; aou yazzakkaru fa- shall raise him again to life.
tanfa’a-hu az-zikraa; amma man- Nay, but never think yet that man has
is-taghnaa; fa-anta la-hu tasaddaa; achieved the destination fixed for him!
wa ma ‘alayika alla yazzakaa; wa Hence, to reach that destination, man must
ammaman jaa’a-ka yas’aa; wa concentrate upon his acquisition of
huwa yakhshaa; fa-anta ‘an-hu knowledge and progress (‫ ;) طَ َعا ِم ِه‬and think
talahhaa; kalla inna-ha Tazkiratun; about [how it is] that We poured down
fa-man shaa’a zakara-hu. Fi water abundantly; and then We cleaved
sohofin mukarramatin; the earth cleaving it asunder, and
marfoo’atin, mutahharatin. Bi- thereupon We caused grain to grow out of

ayidi safaratin; kiraamin bararatin. it, and vines and edible plants, and olive
Qutil-al-Insaanu maa akfara-hu. trees and date-palms, and gardens dense
Min ayyi shayi’in khalaqa-hu? with foliage, and fruits and herbage, for
Min nutfatin khalaqa-hu fa- you and for your animals to enjoy.
qaddara-hu; thumma as-sabeela AND SO, when the stage of Resurrection
yassara-hu. Thumma amaata-hu, (As-Saakhkhatu – ‫صاخۃ‬ ّ ‫ )ال‬is launched,
fa-aqbara-hu. Thumma izaa when everyone will [want to] flee from his
shaa’a anshara-hu. Kalla lamma brother, and from his mother and father,
yaqdhi maa amara-hu. Fal-yanzur- and from his spouse and his children: on
in-Insaanu ilaa ta’aami-hi. Annaa that stage, to every one of them, will his
sabab-na al-maa’a sabban; own state be of sufficient concern.
thumma shaqaq-na al-ardha Some faces will on that stage be bright with
shaqqan. Fa-ambatana fi-ha happiness, laughing, rejoicing at glad
habban. Wa ‘anibaa wa qadhbaa; tidings. And some faces will on that stage
wa zayitoonan wa nakhlan; wa with dust be covered, with darkness
hadaa’iqa ghulban; wa faakihatun overspread: these will be the ones who
wa abban. Mata’an la-kum wa li- denied the truth and were immersed in
an’aami-kum. Fa-izaa jaa’at-is- destructive activities!”
saakhkhatu; youma yafirrul-mar’u
min akhee-hi; wa ummi-hi wa Authentic meanings of some Important

hi. Li-kulli-imri’in min-hum
youma’izin shaanun yughnee-hi. Qaf-Ba-Ra: q b r : ‫ = اقبره‬to bury (the dead). aqbara -
Wujoohun youma’izin musfiratun; to cause to be buried, have a grave day, have anyone
buried. Grave, tomb, intermediate state in which
dhaahikatun, mustabshiratun; wa
the soul lives after death till the resurrection.
wujoohun youma’izin ‘alayi-ha maqabir - cemetery, place of burying
ghabaratun. Tarhaqu-ha qataratun. .
Oolaa’ika hum al-kafarat-ul- Nun-Ba-Tay: ‫ = نبت‬to gush or flow out, draw water,
fajaratu.” reach water by digging well. anbata - to bring a thing
to light, deduce a thing. istanbata - to find out, elicit,
elucidate. nabatun - internal state of a person.

Sad-Kh-Kh: ‫صاخۃ‬ ّ ‫ = ال‬to strike sound on the ear,


strike (iron) upon (stones), deafen (the ears, noise),
accuse (of great crime). sakhkhah - deafening
cry/shout/noise. Resurrection.

‫﴿﴾ َوإِذَا‬ ٩ ‫نب قُ ِتل َْت‬ َ ٨ ‫ الْموءودةُ سئل َت‬states and dignitaries (an-Nujoomu – ‫)النجوم‬
ٍ َ‫ي ذ‬ ِ ‫﴿﴾ بِأ‬ ْ ِ ُ َ ُ َْ
will become obscured (ankadarat - ‫)انکدرت‬,
‫الس َما ُء‬
َ ‫﴾ َوإِذَا‬١٠﴿ ‫ُن ِش َر ْت‬ ‫الص ُح ُف‬ ُ and when firmly established chiefs and
‫﴿﴾ َوإِذَا ال َْجنَ ُة‬ ١٢ ‫يم ُس ِع َر ْت‬ ُ ‫﴿﴾ َوإِذَا ال َْج ِح‬ ١ ‫ت‬ ْ ‫ ك ُِش َط‬noble elites (al-jibaalu – ‫ )الجبال‬will be
‫﴿﴾ ف ََّل‬ ١٤ ‫ض َر ْت‬ َ ‫ت َن ْفس َما أ َ ْح‬ ُ shaken from their foundations (suyyirat –
ْ ‫﴿﴾ عَلِ َم‬ ١٣ ‫َت‬ ْ ‫)سيرت أ ْز لِف‬, and when their integrated
‫﴿﴾ َوالل َ ْي ِل‬ ١٦ ‫ار ا لْك َُن ِس‬ ِ ‫﴿﴾ ال َْج َو‬ ١٥ ‫ أُق ِْس ُم بِا لْ ُخ َن ِس‬communities ( ‘ishaar – ‫ )العشار‬would come
to their end and become destitute (‘uttilat –
‫﴿﴾ إِنَ ُه لَق َْو ُل‬ ١٨ ‫لص ْب ِح إِذَا تَ َن َف َس‬ ُ ‫﴿﴾ َوا‬ ١٧ ‫)عطِّلت إِذَا َع ْس َع َس‬, and when those lonely, deserted and
‫ند ذِي ال َْع ْر ِش‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ ذِي ق َُوةٍ ِع‬ ١٩ ‫يم‬ ٍ ‫ول ك َِر‬ ٍ ‫ َر ُس‬anxious folks (al-wuhooshu – ‫ )الوحوش‬will

wander around tired and fatigued
‫﴿﴾ َو َما َصا ِح ُبكُم‬ ٢١ ‫ني‬ ٍ ‫م‬

‘as’asa; wa-as-Subhi iza tanaffasa; worthy of trust. This companion of yours is
inna-hu la-qawlu rasoolin kareem; not possessed as he has seen it all in its
zee quwwatin ‘inda zee-al-‘arshi clear and utmost degree (bil-ufaq al-
makeen; mutaa’in thamma ameen; mubeen – ‫)باالفق المبين‬. And he is not the one
wa ma saahibu-kum bi-majnoon; to begrudge others (bi-dhaneen – ‫ )بضنين‬the
wa laqad ra’aa-hu bil-ufuq-il- knowledge of the unseen future (bil-ghayib
mubeen; wa ma huwa ‘ala-ai- – ‫)بالغيب‬. Nor is this the word of an
ghayibi bi-dhaneen; wa ma huwa accursed Satan. Therefore, where else
bi-qawli Shayitaanin rajeem. Fa- would you go now! Here is a reminder and
ayina tadhhaboona; in huwa illaa advice to all the mankind, and every one of
dhikrun lil-‘aalameen; li-man you who so wishes, can opt for a straight
shaa-a min-kum an yastaqeem. path in life. For this purpose you need to

of it, their border/extremity, utmost degree of
something, overcame/surpassed.

Dad-Nun-Nun: ‫ = ضنين‬Became niggardly, tenacious,


stingy, or avaricious. A thing highly esteemed, of
which one is tenacious. Courageous, brave, or strong-

you dare to deny the authenticity of the

kawaakib-un-tatharat; wa izal- while there are compulsory safeguards
bihaaru fujjirat; wa izal-qubooru appointed upon you, just like much valued
bu’thirat; ‘alimat nafsun maa informers (kiraman kaatibeen – ‫)کراما کاتبين‬
qaddamat wa ukhkharat. Yaa who remain watchful of all that you are
ayyuhal-Insaanu maa gharraka bi- doing. Verily, the righteous ones will
Rabbik-al-Kareem; allazi certainly be in blessings; and indeed the
khalaqaka, fa-sawwaaka,fa- wicked ones will certainly be in the fire of
‘adalaka; fi ayyi sooratin maa remorse where they will be placed on the
shaa’a rakkabak. Kalla, bal day the Divine system is enforced (youm-
tukazzaboona bid-Deen, wa inna ud-Deen – ‫ ;)يوم الدين‬and they cannot escape
‘alayi-kum la-haafizeen; kiraaman that eventuality. And what would explain
kaatibeen; ya’lamoon maa to you as to what is the stage of
taf’aloon. Innal-Abraara la-fi enforcement of Divine System/Discipline?
na’eem; wa innal-fujjaara la-fi Again, how would you know what is that
Jaheem; yaslawna-ha youm-ad- stage of enforcement of Divine
Deen. Wamaa hum ‘un-haa bi- System/Discipline? It is that stage/time/era
ghaaibeen. Wa maa adraaka maa when no soul would be able to exercise
youm-ud-Deen. Thumma maa authority over another soul. And all

adraaka maa youm-ud-Deen? authority on that stage would be reserved
Youma laa tumliku nafsun li- exclusively for Allah, the Absolute
nafsin shayi’an, wal-amaru sovereign power”.

‫﴿﴾ َوإِذَا َم ُروا‬ ٢٩ ‫ُون‬َ ‫ض َحك‬ ْ ‫ِن ال َ ِذي َن آ َم ُنوا َي‬ َ ‫أ ْج َر ُموا ك َا ُنوا م‬ Discipline is to be enforced (youm-ud-Deen
‫َل أ َ ْهلِ ِه ُم ان َقل َُبوا‬

َ ُ ‫﴿﴾ َوإِذَا َرأ ْو ُه ْم قَا لُوا إِ َن َهـ ٰ ُؤ َّل ِء ل ََضال‬
except the transgressors and sinners.
‫﴿﴾ َو َما‬ ٣٢ ‫ون‬ ٣١ ‫ني‬ َ ‫فَ ِك ِه‬
Whenever they were given our messages,

َ ‫﴿﴾ فَا ل َْي ْو َم ال َ ِذي َن آ َم ُنوا م‬
‫ِن‬ ٣ ‫ني‬ َ ‫َهْي َحا ِف ِظ‬ ْ ِ ْ ‫أ ْر ِسل ُوا َعل‬ they labelled them as falsehoods coming
ِ‫أاْلَ َرائِك‬ ‫﴿﴾ َعلَى‬٣٤ ‫ُون‬
َ ‫ض َحك‬
ْ ‫َي‬ ِ ‫ا لْك َُف‬
‫ار‬ from the earlier times (asaateer-ul-
‫﴾ َهلأ ُث ِّو َب ا أل ُك َّفا ُر َما‬٣٥﴿ َ‫َين ُظ ُرون‬ awwaleen – ‫)اساطير االولين‬. It was not so;
rather their hearts were rendered corroded
‫]۔‬۳۶[ َ‫َكا ُنوا َي أف َعلُون‬ (raana – ‫ )ران‬by their continued
misconduct. It is not so, because they, on

precluded (la-mahjooboon –‫ )لمحجوبون‬from

‘alayi-hi aayaatina qaala asaateer- bliss; their thirst for advancement will be
ul-awwaleen. Kalla, bal raana quenched (yusqawna – ‫ )يسقون‬with extreme
‘alaa quloobi-him ma kaanu degree of constant, genuine and delightful
yaksiboon. Kalla, inna-hum ‘un acquisitions/achievements; this extreme
Rabbi-him youma’izin la- degree (khitaamu-hu – ‫ )ختامہ‬would be of
mahjuboon. Thumma inna-hum intelligence and soundness in judgement
la-saaloo-ul-jaheem. Thumma (miskun – ‫) ِمسک‬, and in the course of these
yuqaalu haadha allazi kuntum bi- achievements the competitors will be
hi tukazziboon. Kalla inna competing with each other as it will be
kitaabal-abraari la-fee ‘illiyeen. composed of (mizaaju-hu – ‫ )مزاجہ‬all that is
Wa maa adraaka ma ‘illiyoon? most exalting (min tasneem – ‫ ;)من تسنيم‬it
Kitaabun marqoom, yashhadu-hu will be like a source of bliss (‘ayinan – ‫)عينا‬
al-muqarraboon. Innal-abraara la- wherefrom only the ones close to God (al-

‫ = اکتالو‬To measure, weigh, compare. A measure of
capacity.

Siin-Jiim-Nun : ‫ سجّين‬: ‫ =س ج ن‬to imprison/jail,


restrain/conceal, register/record, register in which the
actions of the wicked are recorded, prison, written
book, sahib al-sijn (fellow prisoner), anything
hard/vehement/severe/continuous.

Kh-Siin-Ra : ‫ یخسرون‬:‫ =خ س ر‬To suffer loss or


diminution, to be
deceived/cheated/beguiled/circumvented, to err/go
astray/deviate from/miss the right way, to perish or
die, make a thing defective or deficient, destroy or
cause to perish, remove/alienate/estrange someone, to
be treacherous/ignoble/mean, to be unfaithful,
ungenerous, small/little/weak (among mankind),
refuse invitation from another.

Ra-Ha-Qaf : ‫ =رحق‬pure, delightfully refreshing


wine, the sweetest of wine: the most excellent
thereof: or the oldest: or unadulterated wine; or wine
that is easy to swallow. ‫زندگی کی پاکيزہ سرور آور‬
‫خوشگواریاں۔‬

Alif-Ra-Kaf : ‫ =ا ر ک ؛ ارائک‬camels feeding/eating on


a certain tree termed (Alif-Ra-Alif-Kaf) or camels
remained, or continued, among trees of that kind; to
persist or preserver; He compelled him or
constrained him, to do the thing, or affair; or made
him to keep, or cleave, to it; herbage in which the
camels remain or continue, couch.

Miim-Siin-Kaf : ‫ = مسک‬To retain, withhold,


maintain, be tenacious or niggardly, hold fast a thing,
arrest a thing, restrain/detain/confine/imprison a

person, restrain or abstain from a thing,
grasp/clutch/seize a thing, take a thing with the hand,
intelligent or sound in judgement.

Miim-Zay-Jiim : ‫=مزاج‬ To
mix/mingle/incorporate/blend,
exasperate/irritate/enrage a person, to give something,
contend or dispute with a person, various in
disposition or temperament.

Siin-Nun-Miim: ‫ تسنيم‬: ‫ = س ن م‬to raise/ascend, rise


high. sanam - camel's hump, prominence, chief of a
tribe. sanamatun - blossom, summit. tasnim - water
(of life) coming from above signifying
spirituality/knowledge from Allah.

“When passages are opened in the Universe
َ ١ ‫انش َقت‬ (as-Samaa – ‫)السماء‬, meaning that it becomes

َ ‫إِذَا‬ accessible for man (anshaqqat - ‫) انشقّت‬, and

ْ ‫﴿﴾ َوألْق‬ ْ ُ ُ ‫﴿﴾ َوإِذَا ْاْل َ ْر‬ ٢ ‫ت‬ ْ ‫َو ُح َق‬ when acting (uzinat – ‫ )اُ ِذنت‬for its Lord’s
providence to take effect (li-Rabbi-ha – ‫)لِربّھا‬

reality (Huqqat – ‫ ;) ُحقّت‬and when the Earth

has reached the extreme of its appointed time
‫ِك َتا َب ُه‬ َ ‫وِت‬
ِ ‫أ‬ ‫َم ْن‬ ٦ ‫ف َُم َّلقِي ِه‬ (muddat – ‫ ) ُم ّدت‬and has endured (alqat – ‫)القت‬
‫ِح َسا ًبا‬ ‫ب‬ُ ‫اس‬َ ‫ُي َح‬ ‫ف‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ ف ََس ْو‬ ٧ ‫ِب َي ِمي ِن ِه‬ what was going on thereupon, and become
old and worn out (takhallat – ‫) تخلّت‬, and thus
‫﴿﴾ َوأ َ َما َم ْن‬ ٩ ‫ورا‬ َ َ ‫﴿﴾ و ين َقلِب إ‬
ً ‫َل أ ْهلِ ِه َم ْس ُر‬ٰ ِ ُ َ َ ٨ ‫ِيا‬ ً ‫َي ِس‬ acting (uzinat – ‫ )اُ ِذنت‬for its Lord’s providence
‫ف يَ ْد ُعو‬ َ ‫﴾ ف ََس ْو‬١٠﴿ ِ‫وِت َ ِك َتابَ ُه َو َرا َء َظ ْه ِره‬ ُ
ِ ‫أ‬
to take effect (li-Rabbi-ha – ‫)لِربّھا‬, it
established this change as a reality (Huqqat –
‫َان ِِف أ َ ْهلِ ِه‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ إِنَ ُه ك‬ ١٢ ‫ِيا‬ً ‫َل َس ِع‬ ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ َو َي ْص‬١ ‫ورا‬ ً ‫ُث ُب‬ ‫) ُحقّت‬, O Mankind , verily, you will also be
َ َ َ ١٣ ‫َم ْسرورا‬
ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ ب‬
‫ََل إِ َن َربَ ُه‬ ١٤ ‫ور‬َ ‫﴿﴾ إِن ُه َظ َن أن لن يَ ُح‬
making your best efforts (kaadihun – ‫ )کادح‬to
ً ُ accomplish your Sustainer’s goals in a
‫﴿﴾ َوا لل َ ْي ِل‬ ١٦ ‫لش َف ِق‬ ُ
َ ‫﴿﴾ ف ََّل أق ِْسم بِا‬ ١٥ ‫ِيا‬
ُ ً ‫َان بِ ِه بَ ِص‬
َ ‫ك‬ laborious way (‫)کدحا‬. So on that stage, you

And then, whoever will be given his recorded

– ‫)بيمينہ‬, he will eventually pass through an
easy accounting and would revert to his own
‫﴿﴾ َواللَـ ُه أَعْل َُم بِ َما‬ ٢ ‫ون‬
َ ُ ِ ُ‫ب‬ ‫ذ‬ َ
‫ك‬ ‫ي‬ ‫وا‬ ‫َر‬
ُ ‫ف‬ َ
‫ك‬ kind in a joyous state. And as for those
‫﴿﴾ إِ َّل ال َ ِذي َن‬ ٢٤ ‫ِيم‬ َ َ‫﴿﴾ فَب ِشرهم بعذ‬
ٍ ‫اب أل‬ ٍ َ ِ ُ ْ َ ٢٣ ‫ون‬ َ ‫ُيو ُع‬
whose recorded account is given to them
hidden behind their backs (waraa’a zuhri-hi –
﴾﴿ ٢٥ ‫ون‬ ‫ن‬ ‫م‬ ‫م‬ ‫َِي‬ ‫غ‬ ‫ر‬ ‫ج‬َ ‫ات لَهم أ‬ ‫ح‬ ‫ا‬ ‫الص‬
َ ‫ُوا‬ ‫ل‬‫م‬ ‫ع‬ ‫و‬ ‫وا‬ ‫ن‬‫م‬ ‫آ‬
ٍ ُ ْ َ ُ ْ ْ ْ ُ ِ َ ِ‫ل‬ ِ َ َ ُ َ ‫)وراء ظہرہ‬, they would certainly be denied any
further evolution (Thabooran – ‫ )ثبورا‬and
doomed to the fire of remorse and repentance.
Transliteration: They are those who had been happy with their
own kind, and had assumed they will not be
“Iza-as-Samaa-un-shaqqat. Wa transformed from the present state of life to
adhinat li-Rabbi-ha wa huqqat. Wa another (lun-yahoor – ‫)لن یحور‬. But nay!
iza-al-Ardhu muddat. Wa alqat ma (balaa – ‫)بلی‬. Your Lord’s wisdom had
fi-haa wa takhallat. Wa adhinat li- already made its decision on this issue.
Rabbi-ha wa huqqat. Ya ayyuhal- Therefore it is not going to be so (Fa-laa –
Insaanu inna-ka kaadihun ilaa ‫)فال‬. I swear by the expanding glow of the
Rabbika kadhan, fa-mulaaqee-hi. sunset, and by the night when it fully
Fa-amma man ootiya kitaba-hu bi- develops and sets in, and the moon when it
yameeni-hi. Fa-sawfa yuhaasabu attains its fullness, all of you too will
hisaaban yaseera. Wa yanqalibu certainly evolve (la-tarkabunna – ‫ )لترکب ُّن‬stage
ilaa ahli-hi masroora. Wa amma by stage (tabaqan ‘un tabaqin – ‫)طبقا عن طبق‬.
man ootiya kitaba-hu waraa-a So what’s wrong with them that ِ they do not
zahri-hi, fa-sawfa yad’oo believe, and when the Quran is recited to
thuboora. Wa yaslaa sa’eera. them they do not obey/submit to its
Inna-hu kaana fi ahli-hi masroora. injunctions (la yasjudoon – ‫)ال یسجدون‬. Rather,
Inna-hu zanna an lun yahoor. those who conceal the truth, disavow it.
Balaa inna Rabba-hu kaana bihi However, God knows all they harbor in their
baseera. Fa-laa uqsimu bilshafaqi, breasts. So, give them the tidings of a painful
wa allayili wa ma wasaqa, wa torment, excepting those who attained to faith

Wa izaa quriya ‘alayihim-ul- Authentic meanings of some Important

Wa-Alla-hu a’lamu bi-maa = Shiin-Qaf-Qaf : ‫ =ش ق ق‬pass along the way,
yu’oon. Fa-bashshir-hum bi- cross, open a way/passage/vent/channel,

‘azaabin aleem; illa-allazina cut/split/divided/clave/ripped/tore.
aamanu wa ‘amilus-saalihaati la-
Alif-Dhal-Nun ‫ =ا ذ ن‬he gave ear or listened to it,
hum ajrun ghayiru mamnoon.”
being pleased, grant leave, to allow,
permit/ordered, be informed, advised,
notification/announcement/proclamation, ear,
appetite/longing/yearning.

Ha-Qaf-Qaf :‫ =ح ق ق‬To be suitable to the


requirements of justice or wisdom or truth or right or
reality or fact, to be
just/proper/right/correct/true/fitting, to be
authentic/genuine/sound/valid/substantial/real, also
established/confirmed/binding/unavoidable/incum
bent, to be manifest, without doubt or uncertainty,
established as a fact, to be obligatory or due, have
right or title or claim to a thing, deserve or merit a
thing, most worthy, ascertain, to be sure or certain, to
be true or verifiable or veritable, to be serious or
earnest, dispute or litigate or contend with another,
speak the truth, reveal/manifest/show a truth or right,
to be proven true, pierce or penetrate
.
Miim-Dal-Dal : ‫ =م د د‬to reach the term, extreme,
appointed time; to reach term of endurance or
continuance; to draw a thing (namely a rope), pull a
thing, stretch a thing, strain a thing, extend by
drawing or pulling, stretch forth, to prolong,
expand/elongate/lengthen a thing, spread or spread
out, delay or defer a thing, continue a thing, to help or
aid someone, to advance, to increase, to supply ink
(put ink into a thing), apply ink to a thing, manure
land (with dung).

‫ = ل ق ي‬Lam-Qaf-Ya = To meet, meet with,


encounter, find, find out a thing, see, come across,
experience, suffer from, occur, undergo, endure, lean
upon, recieve, come face to face, go in the direction
of or towards.
This root has occurred in al quran in 45 forms, and
been used about 145 times.

Kh-Lam-Waw :‫ تخلّت‬:‫ =خ ل و‬To be


empty/vacant/void/destitute/unoccupied, to be free
from fault or a thing or affair, free of accusation or
suspicion, to be alone or without any companion,

meet with one in a vacant/unoccupied place, to pass
away, to dismiss, let loose or let go a thing, permit or
allow a thing, to forsake/relinquish/desert/abandon a
thing, to be distant/remote/aloof/far from a thing, be
at leisure, unoccupied (unemployed).

Kaf-Dal-ha :‫ =ک د ح‬To toil, exert, make every effort


to carry out a thing, labour hard and actively, toil
hard, labouring, laboriously, one who labours, to
weary oneself in work, to seek to gain sustenance, to
disfigure, render a thing ugly or unseemly.

Tha-Ba-Ra :‫ ثبور‬:‫ = ث ب ر‬to keep back,


confine/limit/prevent/withhold/restrain/hinder, to
deny/prohibit/refuse, render unsuccessful, to
prevent one from doing or attaining something, go
astray, lose, perish/destroy, disappoint, expel, curse.
To work at something diligently/constantly.

Shiin-Fa-Qaf :‫ شفق‬:‫ =ش ف ق‬to pity, be anxious


about, fear. shafaq - fear, pity, evening, twilight with
its redness or whiteness, after sunset. ashfaqa - to
be afraid. mushfiqun - one who is afraid or is in
terror, compassionate, fearful one, tender.

Waw-Siin-Qaf :‫ اتسق‬:‫ وسق‬:‫ =و س ق‬to gather/collect


what is scattered. Be complete, perfect, whole;
loaded; veil in darkness, conceive, be in good order,
driven together.

Chapter Al-Burooj (85)

‫﴿﴾ َوا ل َْي ْو ِم‬١ ‫وج‬ Observe the Universe (as-Samaai – ‫)السماء‬
ِ ‫ْب‬ ُ ُ ‫ال‬ ‫ات‬

filled with constellations (al-Burooj – ‫)البروج‬,

ُ ‫ِل أ ْص َح‬ ٣ ٍ‫﴿﴾ َو َشا ِه ٍد َو َم ْش ُهود‬٢ ِ‫ال َْم ْو ُعود‬ and think of that phenomenal hour/stage (Al-
‫﴿﴾ إِذْ ُه ْم عَل َْي َها‬ ٥ ِ‫ات ال َْوقُود‬ ِ َ‫﴿﴾ الن‬
ِ َ‫ار ذ‬ ٤ ِ‫ْاْل ُ ْخ ُدود‬ youm – ‫ )اليوم‬which is promised to come (al-
mow’ood – ‫)الموعود‬, and of those who shall

َ ‫ََل َما َيف َْعل‬ ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ َو ُه ْم ع‬ ٦ ‫ق ُُعود‬ witness it and of that which is going to be

‫ِهْن إِ َّل أَن ُي ْؤ ِم ُنوا بِاللَـ ِه‬


witnessed. Indeed all those who divided
ْ ُ ْ ‫﴿﴾ َو َما نَق َُموا م‬ ٧ ‫ُش ُهود‬ humanity into different parties/classes/ranks
‫ات‬ِ ‫او‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي ل َ ُه ُمل ُْك‬
َ ‫الس َم‬ ٨ ‫يز ال َْح ِمي ِد‬ ِ ‫ال َْع ِز‬
(ashaab-ul-akhdood – ‫ )اصحاب االخدود‬have
eventually been destroyed by the same
‫﴿﴾ إِ َن ال َ ِذي َن‬ َ َ
٩ ‫ََل ك ُ ِل َش ْي ٍء َش ِهيد‬ ٰ َ ‫َو ْاْل ْر ِض ۖ َواللـ ُه ع‬ blazing fire of hostility (an-naari dhaatil-
‫ات ثُ َم ل َْم َي ُتو ُبوا فَل َُه ْم‬ِ ‫ني َوال ُْم ْؤ ِم َن‬َ ‫فَ َت ُنوا ال ُْم ْؤ ِم ِن‬
wuqood – ‫)النار ذات الوقود‬

their base and sat upon it in ambush (qu’ood –
‫﴾ إِ َن‬١٠﴿ ‫اب ال َْح ِر ي ِق‬ ُ َ‫َو ل َُه ْم عَذ‬ ‫َج َهنَ َم‬ ُ َ‫عَذ‬
‫اب‬ ‫ )قعود‬. They have been conscious of all that
‫ات ل َُه ْم َج َنات‬ ِ ‫الصا لِ َح‬
َ ‫َو َع ِمل ُوا‬ ‫آ َم ُنوا‬ ‫ال َ ِذي َن‬ they have been doing against the people of
peace and faith. Their revenge against the
‫ِك الْف َْو ُز‬ َ ‫ار ۖ ٰذَ ل‬ َ ‫ِمن‬ ‫َت ْج ِري‬
ُ ‫َت ْح ِت َها ْاْل ْن َه‬ people of faith had no justification except an
‫﴿﴾ إِنَ ُه ُه َو‬١٢ ‫ك ل ََش ِديد‬ َ ِ‫َب ْط َش َرب‬ ‫﴿﴾ إِ َن‬ ١ ‫ِي‬
ُ ‫ا لْك َِب‬
opposition to their faith upon God Who holds
the highest Authority and is highly praised,
‫﴿﴾ ذُو‬ ١٤ ُ‫ُور ا ل َْودُود‬
ُ ‫﴿﴾ َو ُه َو الْ َغف‬ ١٣ ‫يد‬ ُ ‫ئ َو يُ ِع‬ ُ ‫ُي ْب ِد‬ the Ruler of the entire Universe and the Earth.
َ‫﴿﴾ َه ْل أ َ َتاك‬
١٦ ‫يد‬ ُ ‫﴿﴾ فَعَال لِ َما ُي ِر‬ ١٥ ‫يد‬ ُ ‫ال َْع ْر ِش ال َْم ِج‬
The God is Himself witness to all that
continues taking place with the passage of
‫﴿﴾ بَ ِل ال َ ِذي َن‬ ١٨ َ‫﴿﴾ فِ ْر َع ْو َن َوثَ ُمود‬ ١٧ ِ‫يث ال ُْج ُنود‬ُ ‫َح ِد‬ time. In fact, those who put the people of faith
‫﴿﴾ َواللَـ ُه ِمن َو َرائِ ِهم‬ ١٩ ‫يب‬ٍ ‫ك ِذ‬ ْ ‫َكف َُروا ِِف َت‬ and peace, individually or in groups (al-
Momineena wa al-Mominaat – ‫المومنين و‬
٢١ ‫﴾ بَ ْل ُه َو ق ُْرآن َم ِجيد‬٢٠﴿‫ُم ِحيط‬
‫﴿﴾ ِِف ل َْو ٍح‬ ‫)المومنات‬, to affliction and distress and did not
﴾﴿٢ ‫ُوظ‬
ٍ ‫م َْحف‬
eventually withdraw from this vice, their
punishment is hell - a punishment of
perpetual burning in the fire of remorse and
Transliteration: deprivation (‘azaab-ul-hareeq – ‫)عذاب الحریق‬.
And for those who attained to faith and
“Was-Samaai dhaat-in-burooj; undertook constructive and reformative deeds
wal-youm-il-mow’ood; wa (‘amilu as-saalihaat – ‫)عملوا الصالحات‬, a life of
shaahidin wa mashhood; qutila full protection and joy awaits where they will
ashaab-ul-akhdood, an-naar dhaat- have under their command (tahti-ha – ‫ )تحتھا‬a
il-waqood, idh hum ‘alayiha flowing abundance of everything desirable
qu’ood. Wa hum ‘alaa ma (al-anhaar – ‫)االنہار‬. This will be a great
yaf’aloona bil-momineena achievement. Indeed, Your Lord’s
shuhood. Wa maa naqamoo min- stranglehold is very stern. He is the one who
hum illa an yu’minoo billaah-il- not only creates but resurrects (yu’eed – ‫)یعيد‬.
‘azeez-il-hameed, alladhi la-hu He is the Protector (al-Ghafoor – ‫ )الغفور‬and
mulk-us-samawaati wal-ardhi; the Affectionate One (al-wudood – ‫)الودود‬.
wal-laahu ‘alaa kulli shayin He is the owner of a Glorious domain and has
Shaheed. Innal-ladheena fatanoo the supreme authority to act as He wishes.

thumma lam yatuboo fa-lahum Though the deniers of truth would deny it too,
‘azaabu jahannama wa la-hum yet, God keeps surrounding them without
‘azaab-ul-hareeq. Innal-ladheena them knowing (waraa’i-him – ‫)ورائھم‬. The
aamanu wa ‘amiloo as-saalihaati episodes which they deny are from the exalted
la-hum jannatun tajree min tahti- Book of Reading, which shines in a gleaming
ha al-anhaaru,dhaalika al-fawz-ul- light (lawhin – ‫ )لوح‬fully guarded (Mahfouz –
kabeer. Inna batsha Rabbi-ka la- ‫)محفوظ‬.”

behind, to hold back, to tarry, lie in wait, sit still,
remain unmoved, desist, abstain, refrain, lurk in
ambush, set snares, neglect, act of sitting,
foundations/bases, women who are past child bearing
age, elderly spinsters past child bearing age, one who
sits at home, one who sits still, seat or place of sitting,
station, encampment.

‫﴾ َو َما أَد َْراكَ َما الطَّا ِرق‬١﴿ ‫ق‬ ِ ‫س َما ِء َوالطَّا ِر‬ َّ ‫َوال‬ “I swear by this Grand Universe (‫س َماء‬ َّ ‫) َوال‬
‫س لَّ َّما َعلَ ْي َها‬ٍ ‫﴾ إِن ك ُّل نَ ْف‬٣﴿ ‫﴾ النَّ ْجم الثَّاقِب‬٢﴿ and I swear by the one that guides towards
‫ق‬ َ ِ‫﴾ خل‬٥﴿ ‫ق‬ َ ِ‫سان ِم َّم خل‬ ِ ْ ‫﴾ فَ ْليَنظ ِر‬٤﴿ ٌ‫َحافِظ‬
َ ‫اْلن‬ the right path (‫) َوالطَّا ِرق‬. And what would

ُّ ‫﴾ يَ ْخرج ِمن بَ ْي ِن‬٦﴿ ‫ق‬ ٍ ِ‫ِمن َّما ٍء دَاف‬ tell you as to what guides towards the right
‫﴾ يَ ْو َم‬٨﴿ ‫﴾ إِنَّه َعلَى َر ْج ِع ِه لَقَا ِد ٌر‬٧﴿ ‫ب‬ ِ ِ‫َوالتَّ َرائ‬ path? It is the acquisition and
‫اص ٍر‬ِ َ‫﴾ فَ َما لَه ِمن ق َّو ٍة َو َال ن‬٩﴿ ‫س َرائِر‬ َّ ‫ت ْبلَى ال‬ accomplishment (‫ (النَّ ْجم‬of enlightening and
‫ض‬ِ ‫﴾ َو ْاْلَ ْر‬١١﴿ ‫ت ال َّر ْج ِع‬ ِ ‫س َما ِء َذا‬ َّ ‫﴾ َوال‬١٠﴿ elevating knowledge whose blaze brightens
‫﴾ َو َما‬١٣﴿ ‫ص ٌل‬ ْ َ‫﴾ إِنَّه لَقَ ْو ٌل ف‬١٢﴿ ‫ْع‬ ِ ‫صد‬ َّ ‫ت ال‬ِ ‫َذا‬ the darkness of ignorance (‫) (الثَّاقِب‬. And it
﴾١٥﴿ ‫﴾ إِنَّه ْم يَ ِكيدونَ َك ْيدًا‬١٤﴿ ‫ھ َو بِا ْل َه ْز ِل‬ is by the way of this knowledge that every
‫﴾ فَ َم ِّه ِل ا ْل َكافِ ِرينَ أَ ْم ِه ْله ْم‬١٦﴿ ‫َوأَ ِكيد َك ْيدًا‬ human self has been provided with
﴾١٧﴿ ‫ر َو ْيدًا‬ safeguards (ٌ‫) َحافِظ‬. Man must, therefore,
seek enlightenment from his mode of
Transliteration: creation (‫ق‬ َ ِ‫ ) ِم َّم خل‬and observe ( ‫ ) فَ ْليَنظ ِر‬as to
how surprisingly has he been created from
“Was-samaa’i wat-taariq. Wa maa a water that gushes out with force (‫ق‬ ٍ ِ‫َّما ٍء دَاف‬
adraaka maa at-Taariqu. An- ). The man himself comes out (‫ ) يَخرج‬of the ْ
Najmus-thaaqibu. In kullu nafsin place between the loins and the ribs ( ‫ِمن بَ ْي ِن‬
lamma ‘alayiha hafiz. Fal yanzur- ِ ‫الص ْل‬
ِ ِ‫ب َوالتَّ َرائ‬
‫ب‬ ُّ ). Verily, he has been given the
ul-Insaanu mimma khuliqa. capacity to repeat that process again and
Khuliqa min maa’in daafiqin. again. However, in the stage of life to come
Yakhruju min bayin-is-Salabi wa where all the concealed acts (‫س َرائِر‬ َّ ‫ ) ال‬will be
at-turaa’ibi. Inna-hu ‘alaa raj’i-hi passed through scrutiny and trial (‫) ت ْبلَى‬,
la-qaadiru. Youma tublas- man will have no power and no protector.
saraa’iru. Fa-maa la-hu min And I swear by this Universe which
quwwatin wa laa naasir. Was- ultimately has to be dismantled (‫ت ال َّر ْج ِع‬ ِ ‫) َذا‬,
Samaa’I dhaatir-raj’i. Wal-Ardhi and I swear by the Earth which is destined
dhaatis-Sad’i. Inna-hu la-qawlun to blow up into pieces (‫ْع‬ ِ ‫) َذا‬, the truth

َّ ‫ت ال‬
faslun. Wa maa huwa bil-hazli. just proclaimed is the ultimate and decisive
Inna-hum yukiduna kaydan. Wa statement (‫ص ٌل‬ ْ َ‫) لَقَ ْو ٌل ف‬. It should not be
akeedu kayidan. Fa-mahhil al- regarded as an idle tale (‫) َو َما ھ َو بِا ْل َه ْز ِل‬.
kaafireena, amhil-hum They indeed are busy in devising their
ruwayidan.” guiles; but I am also going to play my own
tactics. Nevertheless, allow the deniers of
truth some more respite (‫) فَ َم ِّه ِل‬. I also
allow them some more respite.”

appears by night, morning star that comes at the end
of the night, night-visitant, star, tariqan - way/path,

Nun-Jiim-Miim : ‫ =ن ج م‬to appear/rise/begin,


accomplish, ensue, proceed.

Tha-Qaf-Ba :‫ ثاقب‬: ‫ =ث ق ب‬a hole, to pass through (a


hole), bore/perforate/pierce/puncture, intense (surge),
burn/blaze/flame brightly (e.g. as if to pierce through
the night), ascend/reach, penetrate, struck/kindle fire,
fuel for fire, a man very red, brilliant (can be applied
to knowledge), a drill (instrument which perforates).

Sad-Dal-Ayn ‫ صدع‬:‫ =ص د ع‬to split, expound, cleave,


profess openly, divide, cross, proclaim, promulgate
aloud, declare openly, be affected with headache,
manifest, make clear. sad'un - fissure. suddi'a - to
oppress with or suffer from headache. issada'a (vb. 5)
- to be split up or divided. mutasaddiun - that which is
cloven or splits in two.
ha-Zay-Lam :‫ ہزل‬: ‫ ہ ز ل‬:= to be thin and lean,
useless, fruitless, unprofitable, unproductive, vain,
exhausted, joke, talk idle.

Translation: Al-A’laa (87)
‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي َخل َ َق‬ ١ ‫ك ْاْلَع ََْل‬ َ ِ‫اس َم َرب‬
ْ ‫َس ِب ِح‬
َ‫﴿﴾ َوال َ ِذي أ َ ْخ َرج‬ َ “Strive hard to glorify the distinctive

ٰ ‫ ف ََس َو‬attribute of your Supreme Lord Who

‫﴿﴾ فَذَ ِك ْر إِن‬ ٨ ‫ى‬ ٰ ‫﴿﴾ َونُ َي ِس ُركَ لِل ْ ُي ْس َر‬ ٧ ‫ف‬ ٰ َ ‫يَ ْخ‬
(qaddara – ‫ )قدّر‬and thereafter, bestowed
guidance; and Who established a system of
‫َمن‬ ‫﴿﴾ َس َي َذكَ ُر‬٩ ‫ى‬ ٰ ‫ال ِذك َْر‬ ‫ت‬ِ ‫نَف ََع‬ compliance and supervision (akhraj al-
‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي َي ْص ََل‬ ١ ‫﴾ َو َي َت َج َن ُب َها ْاْل َ ْش َق‬١٠﴿ ‫َْش‬
ٰ َ ‫َيخ‬
Mar’aa – ‫)اخرج المرعی‬, then employed it for
bringing/collecting together (ahwaa – ‫)احوی‬
‫يها َو َّل‬ َ ‫وت ِف‬ ُ ‫﴿﴾ ُث َم َّل َي ُم‬ ١٢ ‫ى‬ ٰ ‫ب‬ َْ‫ك‬ُ ْ‫ار ا ل‬ َ ‫الن‬َ every minutest detail (Ghatha-a – ‫)غثاء‬. We

‫اس َم َربِ ِه‬ْ ‫﴿﴾ َو َذ ك ََر‬ ٰ ‫﴿﴾ ق َْد أفْلَحَ َمن َت َز‬

shall certainly explain it to you (sa-nuqri’u-
ka – ‫ )سنقرئک‬so well as not to let you forget,

١٦ ‫الد ْن َيا‬ُ َ‫ون ال َْح َياة‬
َ ‫﴿﴾ َب ْل ُت ْؤث ُِر‬ ١٥ ‫َل‬ ٰ ‫ف ََص‬ except that which God has planned to be

‫ف‬ ِ ‫الص ُح‬
ُ ‫﴿﴾ إِ َن َهـٰذَ ا لَ ِفي‬ ١٧ ‫ْق‬ٰ َ ‫َخ ِْي َوأب‬
so; because undoubtedly He is the One
knowing all that is evident as well as

﴾﴿ ١٩ ‫وس‬ َ ‫ف إِبْ َرا ِه‬
ٰ َ ‫يم َو ُم‬ ِ ‫﴿﴾ ُص ُح‬ ١٨ ‫وَل‬ ٰ َ ‫ْاْل‬ hidden. And We are now endowing you
with ease and abundance. So, keep
Transliteration: admonishing people if that admonition is
proving beneficial. Whosoever fears God
“Sabbih isma Rabbikal A’laa; with reverence he will sure heed the advice,
allazi khalaqa fa-sawwaa; wa just as the wicked ones (ashqaa – ‫)اشقی‬
allazi qaddara fa-hadaa; wa allazi would sidetrack it (yatajannibu-ha –
akhraja al-mar’aa; fa-ja’ala-hu ‫ ;)يتجنّبها‬it is those who would meet the big
ghuthaa’an ahwaa; sa-nuqri-uka fire of remorse; and they would hang
fa-laa tansaa; illa maa shaa-allahu dormant there in a state between death and
inna-hu ya’lamu al-jahra wa maa life. As for those who would evolve
yakhfaa; wa nu-yassiru-ka lil- themselves, they would attain success; and
yusraa; fa-dhakkir in-nafa’atiz- it is those who had paid heed to the
zikraa; sa-yazzakkaru man attributes of their Lord and followed His
yaghshaa; wa yatajannabu-ha al- discipline closely (fa-sallaa – ‫)فصلّی‬.
ashqaa; allazi yaslaa annaaral- However, most of you are influenced by
kubraa; thumma laa yamootu fi- and give preference (tu’tharoona – ‫)توثرون‬
haa wa laa yahyaa; qad aflaha man to the life of this world; whereas the
tazakkaa; wa zakara isma Rabbi-hi Hereafter is an enormously higher and
fa-sallaa; bal tu’thiroonal- much longer lasting (abqaa – ‫ )ابقی‬phase of
hayaatad-dunyaa; wal-Aakhiratu life. Indeed, this fact has been emphasized
khayirun wa abqaa; inna haadhaa in the earlier Scriptures too viz., the
la-fi as-sohofil-oolaa; sohofi Scriptures of Abraham and Moses.”

Ra-Ayn-Ya ‫ =مرعی ؛ ر ع ی‬to pasture/feed/graze,
observe aright, keep (an order), rule, have regard
to, tend, mindful, watch, pay attention. One who
feeds flocks, shepherd. ri'ayatun - right
observance. mar'an - pasture. ra'a (vb. 3) - to
observe/respect, look at, listen, give ear, hearken.
ra'ina - listen to us (a phrase used also for showing
disrespect for the person addressed). Take into
consideration, supervise, control, keep an eye,
maintain, preserve, observe, bear in mind,,,etc.

Gh-Thal-Waw: ‫ = غثاء‬to become unpleasing, put


in trouble, be covered with foam, became
abundant; rubbish or particles of things, scum;
broken pieces of herbage that are seen upon a
torrent; the low or vile of mankind; the lion;
ghutha n.m. 23:41, 87:5

Ha-Waw-Ya (Ha-Alif-Ya): ‫ = احوی‬To be or become


dark green or dark red or brown or black and dried
up by reason of oldness. To
collect/bring/draw/gather a thing together, grasp a
thing, get or gain possession of a thing, take
possession of a thing, hold a thing within ones
grasp or possession, possess a thing, comprise or
comprehend or contain something, to turn a thing
around, to wind a thing, assume a round or circular
form, to coil, to make a small watering trough or
tank for ones camels, to have or assume a
roundness or circularity [or the state of being
coiled]. ahwa n.m. comp. 87:5.

Alif-Tha-Ra : ‫ = اثر؛ توءثرون‬to relate, narrate,


recite, choose, propose, transmit, raise, prefer,
effect, excite.

(88) “Certainly the tidings of the overwhelming
‫﴿﴾ ُو ُجوه َي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ‬ ١ ‫اش َي ِة‬
ِ ‫يث الْ َغ‬ُ ‫َه ْل أ َ َتاكَ َح ِد‬ event have reached you. When that stage
‫ارا‬
ً ‫َن‬ ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ َت ْص‬
‫َل‬ ٣ ‫اص َبة‬ ِ َ‫ن‬ ‫﴿﴾ عَا ِمل َة‬٢ ‫اش َعة‬ ِ ‫َخ‬ is eventually launched (youma’izin – ‫)يومئذ‬,
some faces/beings would look frightened;
‫﴿﴾ل َ ْي َس ل َُه ْم‬ ٥ ‫ني آنِ َي ٍة‬ٍ ْ َ‫ق ِم ْن ع‬ ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ ُت ْس‬٤ ‫َحا ِم َي ًة‬ suffering with distress and affliction;
‫﴿﴾ َّل يُ ْسم ُِن َو َّل ُيغ ِِْن ِمن‬ ٦ ‫َط َعام إِ َّل ِمن َض ِر ي ٍع‬ doomed to blazing fire of remorse; where
their thirst will be quenched from a spring
٨ ‫نَا ِع َمة‬
‫﴿﴾ لِ َس ْع ِي َها‬ ‫يَ ْو َم ِئ ٍذ‬ ‫﴿﴾ ُو ُجوه‬
٧ ‫ُجو ٍع‬ whose water is held back (‘ayinin aaniyatin
َ ِ‫﴾ َّل َت ْس َم ُع ف‬١٠﴿‫﴿﴾ ِِف َجنَ ٍة عَا ل َِي ٍة‬
‫يها‬ ٩ ‫اض َية‬ – ‫ ;)عين آنيۃ‬nothing for them to

acquire/attain (ta’aam – ‫ )طعام‬except

١٧ ‫َت‬ ْ ‫اْلبِ ِل ك َْي َف ُخلِق‬ ِْ life long endeavors (sa’ya-ha raaziatun –
‫﴿﴾ َوإِ ََل‬ ١٩ ‫ت‬ ْ ‫ال ك َْي َف ُن ِص َب‬ ِ ‫﴿﴾ َوإِ ََل الْ ِج َب‬ ١٨ ‫ت‬ ْ ‫ُرفِ َع‬ ‫)لسعيها راضيۃ‬, staying in a garden-like

splendor where they would listen to no

‫﴿﴾ إِ َن‬ ٢٤ ‫ْب‬ َ َ ‫اب ْاْلك‬ ٢٣ ‫َو َكف ََر‬
from which deeper mysteries (sururun –
﴾﴿ ٢٦ ‫﴿﴾ ثُ َم إِ َن عَل َْي َنا ِح َسا بَ ُهم‬ ٢٥ ‫إِل َْي َنا إِيَا َب ُه ْم‬ ‫ )سرر‬will be unfolded (marfoo’atun-
‫ ;)مرفوعۃ‬sighs of relief over the past phase
of life (akwaabun –‫ )اکواب‬will be
Transliteration: released/relinquished (moudhu’atun –
‫ ;)موضوعۃ‬and there will be endless
“Hal ataaka hadith-ul-ghaashiah; conscious evolution by acquisitions and
wojoohun youma’izin khaashi’ah; achievements (namaariq – ‫ )نمارق‬one after
‘aamilatun naasibah; taslaa naaran another (masfoofatun – ‫)مصفوفۃ‬, and
haamiyah; tusqaamin ‘ayinin countless avenues of knowledge will open
aaniyah; layisa la-hum ta’aamum for them to enter and explore (zarabiyyu
illa min dharee’in; laa yusminu wa mabthoothatun –‫)زرابی مبثوثۃ‬.
ُّ While
laa yughni min joo’in; wujoohun recounting this scenario of the Hereafter,
youma’izin naa’imat-ul-li-sa’yi- do they not look at the large rain-filled
haa raadhia; fi jannatin ‘aaliyah; cloud (AL-Ibili – ‫ )االبل‬and contemplate on
laa tasma’u fi-ha laaghiyah; fi-ha how wisely it has been formed; and at the
ayinun jaariyah; fi-ha sururun Universe and how it is raised; and at the

marfoo’ah; wa akwaabun mountains as to how they are erected, and
moudhu’ah; wa namariqu at the Earth as to how it has been
masfoofah; wa zarabiyyu expanded? So, keep drawing their
mabthuthah; a-fa-laa yanzuroona attention to these facts because your role is
ilaa al-ibili kayifa khuliqat; wa ilaa that of an admonisher. You are not to
as-samaai kayifa rufi’at; wa ilaa exercise authority over them; however,
aljibaali kayifa nusibat; wa ilaa al- those who turn their backs and hide the
ardhi kayifa sutihat; fa-zakkiru truth, God is going to inflict upon them a
innamaa anta muzakkir; lasta great chastisement. Indeed it is to us that
‘alayi-him bi-musayitir; illaa man they will return. Thereafter it is upon us to
tawalla wa kafara. Fa-yu’azzibu- hold them accountable.”

Gh-Shiin-Ya: ‫ = غ ش ی‬cover, conceal, covering
event, overwhelm, cover or occupy oneself;

Dad-Ra-Ayn ‫ = ض ر ع‬to humiliate, abase,

humility/submissiveness. Dry, bitter, thorny
herbage.

opposite of Kha-Fa-Daad [56:3], uprear it, rear it,
make it high/lofty, take it and carry it, raise into
view, to exalt, to advance, bring a thing near
presenting or offering, to bring forward, to take
away, disappear, trace back, honour, show regard
to, to introduce, refine, to make known, go
upwards, high rank/condition/state.
Anything raised: mountain, throne etc.

Kaf-Waw-Ba (Kaf-Alif-Ba): ‫ اکواب‬:‫ = کوب‬To


drink out of a goblet. A mug or drinking cup
without a handle, slenderness of neck with
bigness of head, a sighing or grief or regret for
something that has past or escaped one.
A small drum slender in the middle or small
stone such as fills the hand.

Waw-Dad-Ayn: ‫ موضوعۃ‬: ‫ = و ض ع‬he put it or


laid it in/on a place, put it or threw it down from
his hand, opposite of Ra-Fa-Ayn, put down a
thing, brought forth, to appoint, to
impose/remit, give over, relinquish, lowered his
grade/rank/condition, suffer loss, did not gain in
it, lowered/humbled, depository, the proper place
of a thing.

NMRQ-Namaraq: ‫ نمارق‬:‫نمرق‬: a cloud broken at


places; absorption of knowledge and evolution by
acquisition and achievements stored in one’s
bossom. Cushion, pad, pillow, panel, saddle.

Zay-Ra-Ba = small pillows, carpets, anything


that is spread on which one can lean or recline. A
place of entrance; The lurking place of a hunter,
or sportsman or of an archer or a shooter.

‫لش ْف ِع‬َ ‫﴿﴾ و ا‬
َ ٢ ‫َع ْش ٍر‬ ‫ال‬
ٍ ‫﴿﴾ َو ل ََي‬ ١ ‫َوا لْ َف ْج ِر‬
“Observe the criminal deviation from the
‫ِك ق ََسم‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َه ْل ِِف ٰذَ ل‬ ٤ ‫﴿﴾ َوا لل َ ْي ِل إِذَا َي ْس ِر‬ ٣ ‫َوا ل َْو ْت ِر‬ truth (wa al-Fajr – ‫و الفجر‬- ‫فاجر‬،‫)فجور‬, and
َ ٥ ‫لِذي ِحجر‬
‫ك‬ َ ُ‫﴿﴾ أل َْم َت َر ك َْي َف ف ََع َل َرب‬ ٍ ْ ِ the dark periods (layaalin – ‫ )ليال‬of lack of

harassment (al-watri – ‫)الوتر‬. And when this
‫﴾ ال َ ِذي َن َط َغ ْوا‬١٠﴿ ِ‫﴿﴾ َو ِف ْر َع ْو َن ذِي ْاْل َ ْو َتاد‬ ٩ ِ‫بِا ل َْواد‬ darkness spreads out and covers
َ ١ ‫ِف ا لْب َّلد‬ ْ َ‫) َواللَّ ْي ِل إِ َذا ي‬, is there, in such

everything (‫س ِر‬
a situation (fi zaalika – ‫)فی ذلک‬, a cause for
‫ك‬ َ َ‫﴿﴾ إِ َن َرب‬ ٍ َ‫ك َس ْو َط عَذ‬
١٣ ‫اب‬ َ ُ‫هْي َرب‬ ْ ِ ْ َ ‫عَل‬ people of intelligence and understanding
‫ان إِذَا َما ا ْب َت َّلهُ َربُ ُه‬ َ ١٤ ‫لَبا لْمرصاد‬
ُ ‫نس‬َ ‫اْل‬ِ ْ ‫﴿﴾ فَأ َما‬ ِ َ ِْ ِ (li-zee hijrin – ‫ )لِذی حجر‬to get divided

‫﴿﴾ َوأ َ َما إِذَا َما‬ ١٥ ‫فَأَك َْر َم ُه َونَع ََم ُه ف ََيقُو ُل َر ِب أَك َْر َم ِن‬ Haven’t you observed as to how, in
‫ا ْب َت َّلهُ فَق ََد َر َعل َْي ِه ِر ْزقَ ُه ف ََيقُو ُل َر ِب‬ identical situation, your Sustainer had
dealt with the community of ‘Aad, the
‫﴿﴾ َو َّل‬ ١٧ ‫يم‬ َ ‫ك ِر ُم‬
َ ‫ون ا ل َْي ِت‬ ْ ‫﴿﴾ ك ََّل ۖ بَل َّل ُت‬ ١٦ ‫أ َ َها نَ ِن‬ people of Irum having lofty structures, the

َ ‫﴿﴾ َو َتأكُل‬
‫ُون‬ ١٨ ‫ني‬ ِ ‫ام الْ ِم ْس ِك‬ ِ ‫ََل َط َع‬ ٰ َ ‫ون ع‬ َ ‫اض‬ ُ ‫َت َح‬ like of which were not created in other

١٩ ‫اث أَك ًّْل لَمًا‬


cities; And Thamud who had carved out
‫ُون ال َْما َل ُحبًا‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َو ُت ِحب‬ َُ
َ ‫الت‬ huge rocks in the valley; and the pharaoh,
‫﴿﴾ َو َجا َء‬ ٢١ ‫ض َدكًا َدكًا‬ ُ ‫ت ْاْل َ ْر‬ ِ َ‫﴾ ك ََّل إِ َذا ُد ك‬٢٠﴿ ‫َجمًا‬ possessor of big armies (Zil-Autaad – ‫ذی‬
‫ )االوتاد‬which inflicted tyranny and
‫﴿﴾ َوجِي َء َي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ‬ ٢ ‫ك َص ًفا َصفًا‬ ُ َ ‫ك َوال َْمل‬ َ ُ‫َرب‬ oppression in human settlements (taghaou
ََ َ
ِ ْ ‫بِ َج َه َن َم ۖ َي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ يَ َتذَ ك ُر‬
‫ّن لَ ُه‬ fil bilaad – ‫ )طغوفی البالد‬and thus unleashed
ٰ ‫ان َوأ‬ ُ ‫نس‬ َ ‫اْل‬ mischief and unrest therein. Ultimately,
‫ت‬ ُ ‫ق ََد ْم‬ ‫ل َْيت َِِن‬ ‫يَا‬ ‫﴿﴾ َيقُو ُل‬ ٢٣ ‫ى‬ ٰ ‫ال ِذك َْر‬ your Sustainer let loose upon them the
‫﴿﴾ َو َّل‬ ٢٥ ‫﴿﴾ ف ََي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ َّل يُ َع ِذ ُب عَذَ ا بَ ُه أ َ َحد‬ ٢٤ ‫اِت‬
ِ ‫لِ َح َي‬
whip of retribution. Indeed, your Sustainer
is ever vigilant in His monitoring. And as
‫لن ْف ُس‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َيا أَيَ ُت َها ا‬ ٢٦ ‫ُيوث ُِق َوثَاقَ ُه أ َ َحد‬ for man, when he is put in trial by his
‫اض َي ًة‬
ِ ‫َر‬ ‫ك‬
ِ ِ‫َرب‬ٰ َ ِ‫ار ِج ِعي إ‬
‫َل‬ ٢٧ ‫ال ُْم ْط َم ِئ َن ُة‬
ْ ﴾﴿
Sustainer by granting honor and riches, he
acknowledges that his Sustainer has
‫﴿﴾ َوا ْد ُخلِي‬
٢٩ ‫﴿﴾ فَا ْد ُخلِي ِِف ِع َبادِي‬ ٢٨ ‫َم ْر ِضيَ ًة‬ honored him. But if he is tried by limiting
﴾٣٠﴿ ‫َج َن ِِت‬ his subsistence, he will say his Sustainer
has humiliated him. It shouldn’t be so

(kalla – ‫)کال‬. It happens to you because you
Transliteration: are not generous with orphans and you do
not arrange for the sustenance of the poor;

“Wal-Fajr; wa layaalin ‘ashrin; and you devour all the inheritance from
wash-shaf’I wal-watr; wal-layili the past because you love the wealth with a
izaa yasri. Hal fi zaalika qasamun boundless greed. It shouldn’t be like this
li-zee hijrin? Alam tara kayifa (kallaa – ‫)کال‬ ّ because when the human
fa’ala Rabbuka bi-Aadin; Irama masses (al-ardhu – ‫ )االرض‬are reduced to an
zaatil-‘imaadi, allati lam yukhlaqu even and equal level (dakkati – ‫ت‬ ِ ‫)د ّک‬
mithlu-ha fil-bilaad. Wa Thamood altogether ; and your Nourisher’s
allazina jaaboo as-sakhra bil-waad; attributes (Rabbuka –‫ )ربّک‬and His Powers
wa fir’ouna zil-autaad, allazina and Authority (wa al-Malaku – ‫ )و الملک‬are
taghaou fil-bilaad,fa aktharoo fi- revealed (jaa’a – ‫ )جاء‬one by one/rank upon
haa al-fasaad. Fa-sabba ‘alayi-him rank (‫صفًّا‬ َ ‫صفًّا‬ َ ); and at that time the real
Rabbuka sawta ‘azaabin. Inna state of Hell will be fully fully exposed
Rabbaka la-bilmirsaad. Fa-amma ( ‫ ;) َو ِجي َء يَ ْو َمئِ ٍذ بِ َج َهنَّ َم‬so on that stage man
al-insaanu izaa ma abtalaa-hu would finally remember/recall all of his
Rabbu-hu, fakrama-hu wa past deeds, while that remembrance would
n’amma-hu fa yaqoolu Rabbi be of no avail to him. He will only utter in
akraman. Wa amma izaa ma remorse; “would that I had sent forth some
abtalaa-hu, fa qadara ‘alayi-hi good deeds (qaddamtu – ‫ ) قدّمت‬to sustain
rizqa-hu fa-yaqoolu Rabbi this phase of my life (li-hayaati – ‫”)لحياتی‬.
ahaanan. Kalla ball aa Hence, at that stage, his punishment will
tukrimoonal-yateem. Wa la not affect anyone else, and his bondage will
tahaadhdhoona ‘alaa ta’amil- not bind anyone other than him. So, O you
miskeen. Wa ta’kuloona who have achieved perfect contentment of
atturaatha akala-al-lammaa. Wa your conscious self, you will be asked to
tuhibboon al-maala hubban draw closer to your Lord in a state of
jamman. Kalla izaa dukkat-il- perfect love and affection on both sides;
Ardhu dakkan dakkan. Wa jaa’a then you will join the company of My
Rabbuka wal malaku Saffan devoted subjects and thus enter my
saffan. Wa jee’a youmi’izin bi- heaven.”
jahannama youma’izin yatazakkar-
ul-insaanu wa ataa la-hu az-zikraa. Authentic meanings of some Important
Yaqoolu yaa layitani qaddamtu li- Words:
hayati. Fa-youma’izin baa
yu’azzibu ‘azaba-hu ahadun. Wa Fa-Jiim-Ra ‫ =ف ج ر‬cut/divide lengthwise, break
open, vent, incline/decline/deviate,
la yuthiqu wathaqa-hu ahadun.
dawn/sunrise/daybreak, source, abundantly and
Yaa ayyatuhan-Nafsul- suddenly, ample bounty/generosity, a place from
mutma’innatu, irji’ee ilaa Rabbi-ki which water flows. Fujoor: Immorality, iniquity,
radhiyatan mardhiyatan. Fa- depravation, debauchery, dissolution.
adkhuli fi ‘ibaadi; wa adkhuli
jannati.” Ayn-Shiin-Ra ‫ =ع ش ر‬to take away a tenth part,

ashrun/asharun (f.), asharatun/ashratun (m.): ten,
decade, period from three to ten. After twenty there is
no difference between feminine and masculine.
ashara - to consort, live with, cultivate one's society,
become familiar. ashirun - companion, ashiratun -
kindred, ma'sharun - company, race, multitude, who
live in close communion with (pl. ashair). ‘ashrin:
social and familiar intercourse, intimacy, conversing
together, become intimate with one another.
‫ =عشر‬is accusative masculine noun - Ma'ashra is
one of the derivative of it. Companion, intimate,
social, surround, community, background,
atmosphere, culture

Shiin-Fa-Ayn: ‫ = ش ف ع‬to make even that which


was odd, make double, pair, make a thing to be one of
the pair, adjoin a thing to its like, provide a thing
which was alone with another, protect, mediate,
intercede, be an intercessor. shaf'un - pair, double.
shafa'at - likeness/similarity, intercede or pray for a
person.

Waw-Ta-Ra: ‫ = و ت ر‬to suffer loss, defraud, hate,


render odd, harass, do mischief, render any one
solitary, be single.

Ya-Siin-Ra: ‫ = ی س ر‬become
gentle/tractable/manageable/easy/submissive/liberal,
become little in quantity/paltry / no weight or worth,
come from left, divide into parts/portions, make
easy/smooth, adapt/accommodate, play with gaming
arrows (al maysiri), a game for stakes/wagers
involving risk.

Qaf-Siin-Miim: ‫ = ق س م‬to divide, dispose, separate,


apportion, distribute. qasamun - oath. qismatun -
partition, division, dividing, apportionment.
maqsumun - divided/distinct. muqassimun (vb. 2) -
one who takes oath, who apportions. qasama (vb. 3) -
to swear. aqsama (vb. 4) - to swear. taqasama (vb. 6)
- to swear one to another. muqtasimun (vb. 8) - who
divides. istaqsama (vb. 10) - to draw lots. tastaqsimu -
you seek division.
Ha-Jiim-Ra: ‫ = ح ج ر‬To deprive from, harden, hide,
resist, forbid, prevent, hinder, prohibit access (to a

place). To prevent/hinder/debar/withhold/
restrain from a person or thing, prohibit/forbid/
inhibit/interdict, to make boundary or enclose a thing,
burn a mark around the eye of a camel or beast, to
surround, make a thing unlawful or unallowable to a
person, to be emboldened or encouraged, to slaughter
by cutting the throat. hajar - a rock/stone or mass of
rock.

Alif-Ra-Miim: ‫ = ارم‬to bite, eat all (the food), destroy


the crops, reduce to misery and wretchedness. iram -
stone set up in the desert, name of the city of the tribe
or 'Aad, name of the great father of 'Aad from whom
the tribe took its name, a mark made of stones.

Ayn-Miim-Dal: ‫ = ع م د‬to intend, support, place


columns or pillars, place lofty structure, prop up,
resolve, aim, direct, propose, commit (a sin
intentionally), lofty structure, tent, pole, base, chief.

Waw-Ta-Dal : ‫ اوتاد‬: ‫ =و ت د‬to drive in a stake,


fix a stake into the ground, fix a thing firmly.
autaad - stakes, hosts, pegs, chiefs, armies,
poles of tents.

Chapter Al-Balad (90) Translation: Al-Balad (90)

َ ١ ‫َّل أُق ِْسم بهـذَ ا الْبلَد‬ “I do not swear (laa uqsimu – ‫ )ال اقسم‬by this
‫نت حِل بِ َهـٰذَ ا‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َوأ‬ ِ َ َٰ ِ ُ city; though you are a resident of it. But I
‫ان‬َ ‫نس‬ َ ‫اْل‬ِ ْ ‫﴿﴾ لَق َْد َخل َ ْق َنا‬ ٣ ‫﴿﴾ َو َوالِ ٍد َو َما َو ل ََد‬ ٢ ‫ا ل َْبل َ ِد‬ swear by the closest relation between a

‫ب أَن لَن َي ْق ِد َر عَل َْي ِه‬ َ ٤ ‫ِف كَبد‬


father and his offspring (waalidin wa maa
ُ ‫﴿﴾ أيَ ْح َس‬ ٍ َ ِ walada – ‫)والد و ما ولد‬, that we have created
‫ب أَن‬ َ ٦ ‫اّل لُبدا‬
ُ ‫﴿﴾ أيَ ْح َس‬ ً َ ً ‫ْت َم‬

ُ ‫﴿﴾ َيقُو ُل أ ْهلَك‬ ٥ ‫أ َ َحد‬ man in the middle of two optional ways (fi
kabad – ‫)فی کبد‬. Does he consider that no
َ ٧ ‫لَم يرهُ أَحد‬
‫﴿﴾ َو ل َِسا ًنا‬ ٨ ‫ني‬ ِ ْ ‫﴿﴾ أل َْم َن ْج َعل ل َ ُه عَ ْي َن‬ َ ََ ْ one can have superiority over him (yaqdira
‫﴾ ف ََّل اقْ َت َح َم‬١٠﴿ ‫﴿﴾ َو َه َد ْي َناهُ النَ ْج َد ْي ِن‬ ٩ ‫ني‬ِ ْ ‫َو َش َف َت‬
‘alayi-hi – ‫ )يق ِدر عليہ‬because he claims he
has spent loads of money (maalan lubadan
‫َك‬ ُ ‫﴿﴾ ف‬ ١٢ ‫َما ال َْعق ََب ُة‬ َ‫﴿﴾ َو َما أَدْ َراك‬ ١ ‫ال َْعق ََب َة‬ – ‫ )ماال لبدا‬for this purpose? Does he think

‫يما‬ ً ‫﴿﴾ َي ِت‬ ١٤ ‫﴿﴾ أ َ ْو إِ ْط َعام ِِف َي ْو ٍم ذِي َم ْس َغ َب ٍة‬ ١٣ ‫َرق ََب ٍة‬ no one monitors his intentions? Isn’t that
َ ١٥ ‫ذَا مقْرب ٍة‬
WE WHO have provided him with two
َ ‫﴿﴾ ثُ َم ك‬
‫َان‬ ١٦ ‫ت َب ٍة‬
َ ْ ‫﴿﴾ أ ْو ِم ْس ِكي ًنا ذَا َم‬ َ َ َ eyes, and a tongue and two lips; and then
‫اص ْوا‬َ ‫ب َو َت َو‬ ِ ْ ‫الص‬
َ ِ‫اص ْوا ب‬ َ ‫ِم َن ال َ ِذي َن آ َم ُنوا َو َت َو‬
guided him towards those two highlands?
َ ُ ١٧ ‫با لْمرحم ِة‬
But he did not attempt the difficult one
‫اب‬ُ ‫أ ْص َح‬ ‫ك‬
َ ‫﴿﴾ أو لَـ ٰ ِئ‬ َ َ َْ ِ with steep ascent. And what would tell you
َ
‫اب‬ ُ ‫﴿﴾ َوال َ ِذي َن َكف َُروا بِآ َياتِ َنا ُه ْم أ ْص َح‬ ١٨ ‫ال َْم ْي َم َن ِة‬ as to what the difficult, steep ascent means
(maa al-‘aqaba – ‫ ?)ما العقبۃ‬It is the freeing

sustenance in times of hunger or famine
(Zee masghabatin – ‫ )ذی مسغبۃ‬to an orphan
Transliteration: who is near to you, or to a destitute in
misery. Then will he be counted among
“Laa uqsimu bi-haadha al- those who attained to faith and peace and
balad. Wa anta hillun bi- pursued the way to steadfastness and
haadhal Balad. Wa waalidin wa mercy. Such are the blessed and rewarded
maa walada; laqad khalaqnaa ones (ashaab ul-Maymanati – ‫)اصحاب الميمنۃ‬.
al-Insaana fi kabad. A’yuhsabu And those who hide the truth of our
ann-lun yaqdira ‘alayi-hi ahad. injunctions, they are the evil and wretched
Yaqoolu ahlaktu maalan ones (ashaab-ul-Mush’amati – ‫اصحاب‬
lubadan. A’yahsabu an lum ‫)المشامۃ‬. They are doomed to a perpetually
yara-hu ahadan; a’lum naj’al la- (moosadah – ‫ )موصدة‬burning fire.”

hum ashaabul mash’amah. muqtadir - powerful, able to prevail.

= Lam-Ba-Dal: ‫ = لبد‬stuck/clave/adhered (to the
ground/thing), remain fixed/steady and looked or considered,
remain/continue/dwelt/stay in a place, become
intermingled/compacted/coherent, make together, become

felted, aquat, swarm, stifling crowd, that which is packed
densely, abundant/much.

Qaf-Ha-Miim: aqtahama: ‫ ق ح م‬: ‫ = اقتحم‬to rush, enter,


undertake, attempt (the uphill path), make haste, try, plunge,
invade, jump, impel, embark boldly.

Mayimanati – ‫ميمنۃ‬: Ya-Miim-Nun = right side, right, right


hand, oath, bless, lead to the right, be a cause of blessing,
prosperous/fortunate/lucky.

Mush’amati – ‫مشامۃ‬: Shiin-Alif-Miim = to draw ill or


misfortune upon oneself, cause dismay or ill luck, to be
unlucky, be struck with wretchedness and contempt,
regarding as an evil omen, unprosperous, left of something
(in space/direction), desiring the left, journey to Syria,
occupants of low ignoble place, a mole. shu'mun -
wretchedness, contempt, calamity, unrighteousness. ashab
al mash'amah - the wretched ones, those who have lost
themselves in evil and are prone to unrighteousness. Those
who shall have their records given to them in their left
hand.

Chapter Ash-Shams (91) Translation: Ash-Shams (91):

‫إِذَا‬ ‫﴿﴾ َوالْق ََم ِر‬ ١ ‫َو ُض َحا َها‬ َ ‫وا‬


‫لش ْم ِس‬“Witness and observe the Sun and its

and ponder upon the day as it appears in

its glory; and the night as it takes over and

stability & evolution. Hence, those who
were able to nourish and grow it, attained
Transliteration: ripeness and prosperity; and those who
have suppressed its potentialities, faced
“Wash-Shamsi, wa dhuhaa-ha; wa decline. The community of Thamud is an
alqamari izaa talaa-ha; wa example who chose the way of falsity due to
annahaari izaa jallaa-ha; wa their excessive pride. When their most
allayili izaa yaghsha-ha; was wretched ones (ashqaa-ha – ‫ )اشقاھا‬were
samaai wa maa banaa-ha; wal made to rise in defiance (ambatha – ‫)انبعث‬,
Ardhi wa maa tahaa-ha; wa nafsin Allah’s Messenger spoke to them of what
wa maa sawwa-ha; fa alhama-ha was the best and most admirable Conduct
fujura-ha wa taqwa-ha; qad aflaha ordained by Allah (naqatullah – ‫)ناقۃ ہللا‬,
man zakkaa-ha. Wa qad khaaba and what knowledge and inspiration it
man dassaa-ha. Kazzabat filled people with (suqya-ha – ‫)سقياھا‬. They
Thamudu bi-taghwaa-ha; iz denied its truth and prevented it from
amba’atha ashqaa-ha; fa-qaala la- spreading (‘aqaroo-ha – ‫)عقروھا‬.
hum Rasool-ul-laahi naaqat-al- Subsequently, their Nourisher showed His
laahi wa suqyaa-ha. Fa-kazzabu- anger to them (damdama ‘alayi-him – ‫دمدم‬
hu fa-‘aqaroo-ha, fa-damdama ‫ )عليهم‬for this crime on their part, and
‘alyi-him Rabbu-hum bi-zambi- thereafter firmly established His Discipline
him, fa-sawwa-ha. Wa laa (sawwa-ha – ‫ )س ّواھا‬over them. He is never
yakhaafu ‘uqbaa-ha.” afraid of repeated/consistent endeavors
leading to the success of His
Discipline/ideology (‘uqbaa-ha – ‫)عقباھا‬.”

words:

Siin-Waw-Ya : ‫ =س ّوا؛ س و ی؛‬to be worth, equivalent


to. sawwa - to level, complete, arrange, make
uniform, even, congruous, consistent in parts, fashion
in a suitable manner, make adapted to the exigencies
or requirements, perfect a thing, put a thing into a
right or good state. istawa - to establish, become firm
or firmly settled, turn to a thing, to direct one's
attention to a thing, mount. ala sawain - on terms of
equality, i.e. in such a manner that each party should
know that it is free of its obligations, at par.
sawiyyun -even, right, sound in mind and body.
sawiyyan - being in sound health.sawwa (vb. 2) to
proportion, fashion, perfect, level, equal, fill the

space. sawa - midst.

Shiin-Qaf-Ya: ‫ش ق ی ؛ اشقی‬: = to be miserable, be


wretched, in distress, be unhappy, unblessed,
disappointed. Ashqaa – most wretched.

Ba’atha: ‫بعث؛ انبعث‬: He was being sent, he became


roused to action, he became roused or was awakened
from his sleep……

Naaqah: ‫ناقۃ؛ ن و ق‬: ‫نيقۃ؛ تن ّوق؛ تانق‬: signifying


Daintiness, nicety, exquisiteness, refinement, or
scrupulous nicety and exactness; choosing of what is
excellent, or best, to be done and doing admirably; or
the doing firmly, solidly, soundly or thoroughly, and
skillfully………firm, solid, sound, or free from
defect of imperfection.
‘aqaroo-ha – ‫ ع ق ر‬: ‫عقروھا‬: to block or prevent the
activation or effectiveness of something. To
hamstring.
Damdam: ‫دمدم‬: Growl, snarl, rumble: show of anger;
a rough and harsh voice.

Ayn-Qaf-Ba : ‫ عقباھا‬: ‫ =ع ق ب‬to succeed, take the


place of, come after, strike on the heel, come at the
heel, follow anyone closely. Aqqaba – to endeavor
repeatedly, return, punish, requitt, retrace one’s step.
Aqab – to die, leave offsprings, give in exchange.
Aqabatun – place hard to ascent. Uqbun – success.
Ta’aqqaba – to take careful information, shout,
follow step by step. Aqub – heel, son, grandson,
offspring, pivot, axis. Uqba – requital, result, reward,
end, success. Iqab (pl. aqubat) – punishment after sin,
one who puts off or reverses, who looks at the
consequence or result of the affair. The plural
feminine form indicates the frequency of the deeds,
since in Arabic the feminine form is sometimes
employed to impart emphasis and frequency.

“Observe the night when it overwhelms
َ َ
‫﴿﴾ َو َما‬ ٢ ‫َل‬ ٰ ‫ار إِذَا َت َج‬ ِ ‫الن َه‬َ ‫﴿﴾ َو‬ ١ ‫َْش‬ ٰ َ ‫َوا لل ْي ِل إِذَا َيغ‬ and conceals your deeds (yaghshaa – ‫;)يغشی‬
‫َس ْع َيك ُْم‬ ‫﴿﴾ إِ َن‬ ٣ ‫َو ْاْلُنثَ ٰى‬ َ
‫الذك ََر‬ ‫َخل َ َق‬ and the day when it uncovers and reveals
everything (tajallaa – ‫ ;) تجلّی‬and observe
َ َ َ ٤ ‫ل ََش َت‬
‫﴿﴾ َو َص َد َق‬ ٥ ‫ق‬ ٰ َ ‫َْط َوا ت‬ ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ فَأ َما َم ْن أع‬ ٰ the wisdom (maa – ‫ )ما‬behind creating
‫﴿﴾ َوأ َ َما َمن‬ ٧ ‫ى‬ ٰ ‫﴿﴾ ف ََس ُن َي ِس ُرهُ لِل ْ ُي ْس َر‬ ٰ َ ‫بِا ل ُْح ْس‬
٦ ‫َن‬ (khalaqa – ‫ )خلق‬the pair of male and female
units. Your endeavors in this life (sa’yu-
‫﴿﴾ َوك ََذ َب‬ ٰ َ ‫َوا ْس َتغ‬
٨ ‫َْن‬ َ ‫َبخ‬
‫ِل‬ kum – ‫ )سعيکم‬undoubtedly hold a multi-
‫﴾ َو َما ُيغ ِِْن‬١٠﴿‫ى‬ dimensional perspective (la-shattaa – ‫)لشتّی‬.
ٰ ‫﴿﴾ ف ََس ُن َي ِس ُرهُ لِل ُْع ْس َر‬ ٰ َ ‫بِا ل ُْح ْس‬
٩ ‫َن‬
Hence, for those of you who lived with
‫﴿﴾ َوإِ َن‬ ١٢ ‫ى‬ ٰ ‫﴿﴾ إِ َن عَل َْي َنا لَل ُْـه َد‬ ١ ‫ى‬ٰ َ‫َع ْن ُه َما لُ ُه إِذَا َت َرد‬ generosity and circumspection, and have
َ ١٣ ‫وَل‬ ُ
‫ارا‬ً َ‫﴿﴾ فَأنذَ ْر ُتك ُْم ن‬ ٰ َ ‫لَ َنا ل َْْلخ َِرةَ َو ْاْل‬
practically acted for achieving beauty &
equilibrium (bil-husnaa – ‫ )بالحسنی‬in
‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي ك ََذ َب‬ ١٥ ‫﴿﴾ َّل َي ْص َّل َها إِ َّل ْاْل َ ْش َق‬ َ
١٤ ‫ظ‬ ٰ َ ‫َتل‬ society, We shall open easy ways towards
‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي ُي ْؤ ِِت َما لَ ُه‬ ١٧ ‫﴿﴾ َو َس ُي َج َن ُب َها ْاْل َ ْت َق‬ ١٦ ‫َل‬ َ abundance (yusraa – ‫ ;)لليسری‬and for those
ٰ ‫َو َت َو‬ who have behaved miserly and remained
‫ندهُ ِمن نِ ْع َم ٍة‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َو َما ِْل َ َح ٍد ِع‬ ١٨ ‫ّك‬ َ
ٰ ‫َي َت َز‬ self-centered, and denied the need for
‫َربِ ِه‬ ‫َو ْج ِه‬ ‫ا ْب ِت َغا َء‬ ‫﴿﴾ إِ َّل‬ ١٩ ‫ى‬ ٰ ‫ُت ْج َز‬
social equilibrium and beauty (husnaa –
‫)حسنی‬, We shall make available the ways
َ
﴾﴿ ٢١ ‫ض‬ ٰ َ ‫ف َي ْر‬ َ ‫﴾ َو ل ََس ْو‬٢٠﴿ ‫َْل‬ ٰ َ ‫ْاْلع‬ towards hardship; and so their wealth will
not help them when it eventually
diminishes (taraddaa – ‫)تردّی‬. In fact, it is
Transliteration: only upon US to provide guidance and it is
only OUR prerogative (la-na – ‫ ) لنا‬to judge
“Wal-layili izaa yaghsha; wan- you with regard to the life of Hereafter and
nahaari izaa tajallaa; wa maa the present one. Therefore, WE have duly
khalaqaz-Zakara wa al-unthaa. warned all of you about the doom of
Inna sa’ya-kum la-shattaa. Fa- blazing fire (naaran talazzaa – ‫)نارا تلظی‬.
amma man a’taa wat-taqaa, wa None is sent therein except the most
saddaqa bil-husnaa; fa- wretched ones (al-ashqaa – ‫ )االشقی‬who
sanuyassiru-hu lil-yusraa. Wa indulged in prevarication (kazzaba – ‫)کذب‬ ّ
amma man bakhila was-taghnaa, and turned their backs in the face of truth
wa kazzaba bil-husnaa, fa- (tawallaa – ‫)تولّی‬. And the circumspect ones
sanuyassiru-hu lil-‘usraa. Wa maa will be saved from it; it will be those who
yughni ‘un-hu maalu-hu izaa spend from their wealth and thus achieve
taraddaa. Inna ‘alayina lal-hudaa; conscious evolution. And none of them
wa inna lana lal-Aakhirata wa al- expects a reward in return, except desiring
oolaa. Fa-anzartu-kum naaran

talazzaa. Laa yaslaa-ha illa al- (ibtighaa –‫ )ابتغاء‬their Exalted Nourisher’s
ashqaa; allazi kazzaba wa tawalla; favor and attention (wajhi – ‫)وج ِہ‬. And they
wa sayujannabu-ha al-atqaa; allazi certainly are going to lead a life of pleasure
yu’ti maala-hu yatazakkaa. Wa and satisfaction.”
ma li-ahadin ‘inda-hu min
ni’matin tujzaa; illa abtigha’a waj-
hi Rabbi-hi al-a’laa. Wa la-sawfa
yardhaa.”

Chapter Adh-Dhuhaa Translation:Adh-Dhuhaa (93)

“The enlightenment of the Revelation (wa
َ ُ‫ك َرب‬ َ َ‫﴿﴾ َما َودَع‬ َ ُ ‫َوا‬
‫ك‬ ٢ ‫ج‬ ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ َوا لل ْي ِل إِذَا َس‬ ١ ‫ح‬ ٰ َ ‫لض‬ adh'dhuhaa – ‫ )و الضحی‬and the darkness
(wal- layil – ‫ )والليل‬as it had spread over and
‫ك ِم َن‬ َ َ ‫﴾ َو ل َْْلخ َِرةُ َخ ِْي ل‬٣﴿‫َل‬ ٰ َ َ‫َو َما ق‬ covered it, are witness to the fact that your
‫﴿﴾ أَل َْم‬ ٥ ‫ض‬ ٰ َ ‫َت‬ْ َ ‫كف‬ َ ُ‫يك َرب‬َ ‫ف ُي ْع ِط‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َو ل ََس ْو‬ ٤ ‫وَل‬ ُ
ٰ َ ‫ْاْل‬ Sustainer has neither left you alone (maa
wadda’aka – ‫)ما و ّدعک‬, nor forsaken (maa
ً ‫﴿﴾ َو َو َج َدكَ َض‬
‫اّل‬ ٦ ‫ى‬ٰ ‫َآو‬
َ ‫يما ف‬ ً ‫َي ِج ْدكَ َي ِت‬ qalaa – ‫ )ما قلی‬you. And the second phase of
َ ٨ ‫﴾ ووجدكَ عائِ ًّل فَأ َ ْغ ََن‬٧﴿‫فَهدى‬
َ ‫﴿﴾ فَأ َما ال َْي ِت‬
‫يم‬ ٰ َ َ َ ََ ٰ َ َ life (lal-aakhiratu – ‫ )لآلخرۃ‬for you is
‫﴾ َوأ َ َما‬١٠﴿ ‫السائ َِل ف ََّل َت ْن َه ْر‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ َوأ َ َما‬
certainly going to be more rewarding than
٩ ‫ف ََّل َتق َْه ْر‬ the first one, because your Sustainer would
﴾﴿
١ ‫ك ف ََح ِد ْث‬
َ ِ‫ِب ِن ْع َم ِة َرب‬ endow you with so much of His Grace that
you will attain utmost pleasure and
satisfaction. Had He not seen you an
orphan and provided you with shelter?
And found you in a lost state, so guided you
Transliteration: to the right course; and saw you in want, so
turned you rich and self-sufficient.
“Wadh-dhuhaa; wal layili iza Therefore, with the orphans, never be
sajaa; maa wadda’aka Rabbu-ka harsh; and when one asks for something,
wa maa qalaa; wa lal-aakhiratu never repulse him; and as for the blessings
khayiran laka min al-oolaa. Wa of your Sustainer upon you, it is befitting
la-saufa yu’teeka Rabbu-ka fa- for you to make them known in your
tardhaa; a’lum yajidu-ka yateeman common discourse.”

the morning which follow shortly after sunrise, full
brightness of the sun, sunshine, part of the forenoon
when the sun is already high, bright part pf the day
when the sun shines fully, early afternoon, high noon,
daytime/daylight.

Siin-Jiim-Ya = to be calm/quiet/still, be covered or


spread out with darkness.

Waw-Dal-Ayn = to
leave/depart/forsake/overlook/disregard,
place/deposit.

Qaf-Lam-Ya =to hate, detest, abhor, dislike, forsake.

Chapter Ash-Sharha (94) Translation:Ash-Sharha (94)


َ
‫نك‬َ ‫﴿﴾ َو َو َض ْع َنا َع‬١ َ‫َك َص ْد َرك‬ َ ‫أل َْم َن ْش َرحْ ل‬
“Haven’t we expanded (nashrah – ‫ )نشرح‬your
‫َك‬ ٣ َ‫ض َظ ْه َرك‬
َ ‫﴿﴾ َو َرف َْع َنا ل‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي أَن َق‬ ٢ َ‫ِو ْز َرك‬
mental faculties (Sadraka – ‫ )صدرک‬in order to
help you in your struggle (laka – ‫ )لک‬and thus
‫﴾ إِ َن َم َع ال ُْع ْس ِر‬٥﴿‫﴿﴾ فَإِ َن َم َع ال ُْع ْس ِر ُي ْس ًرا‬٤ َ‫ذِ ك َْرك‬
relinquished (wadha’a – ‫ )وضع‬you from the
‫ك‬ ٰ َ ِ‫﴿﴾ َوإ‬
َ ِ‫َل َرب‬ ٧ ‫ب‬
ْ ‫َانص‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ فَإِذَا فَ َرغ‬
َ ‫ْت ف‬ ٦ ‫ ُي ْس ًرا‬burden of troubles which weighed heavily on
your back? And we then raised you in honor
﴾٨﴿ ‫َارغَب‬ْ ‫ف‬ and eminence (zikrak – ‫)ذکرک‬. Therefore, it
must be understood that along with the
Transliteration: adversity there’s ease & abundance. Indeed,
along with the adversity, there is always ease

“Alam nashrah laka sadrak ; wa from other things (faraghta – ‫)فرغت‬, set out to
wadha’naa ‘anka wizrak; allazi establish your command firmly (fa-ansab –
anqadha zahrak; wa rafa’naa laka ‫ ;)فانصب‬and towards the goals of your
zikrak; fa anna ma’a al’usri Sustainer (ilaa Rabbi-ka – ‫)الی ربّک‬, remain
Yusra; Inna ma’a al’usri Yusra; eagerly desirous & vigilant (fa arghab –
fa-izaa faraghta fa-ansab; wa alaa ‫)فارغب‬.”

Tay-Waw-Ra ‫ طور ؛‬: = went or hovered round about

applied to several other mountains, mountain which
produces trees, mountain, wild or to estrange oneself
from mankind, stranger, utmost point, encounter two

١٤ ‫ى‬ ٰ ‫بِأ َن اللَـ َه َي َر‬ ‫ ;)بالقلم‬and thus, enabled man to learn what
ُ‫﴿﴾فَل َْي ْدع‬ ١٦ ‫اص َي ٍة ك َا ِذ َب ٍة َخا ِط َئ ٍة‬
ِ ‫﴿﴾ َن‬ ١٥ ‫اص َي ِة‬ َ ِ‫ب‬
ِ ‫الن‬ he otherwise could not have known. It is
not so that man has necessarily to become

himself self-sufficient. He knows the
reality that all must return to your
Sustainer. But have you not seen that kind

“Iqra’ bismi Rabbika allazee Ask them as to whether they have
khalaqa(1). Khalaq-al-Insaana confirmed if they were on the right way, or
min ‘alaq(2). Iqra’ wa Rabbi-ka were directing men towards God
al-Akram(3), allazee ‘allama bil- consciousness? And had they also checked
Qalam(4). ‘Allama-al-Insaana whether or not they were telling lies and
maa lum ya’lum(5). Kallaa, inna- turning their backs upon the truth? Do
al-Insaana la-yutghaa(6); an ra’a- they not know that God is already
hu istaghnaa(7). Inna ilaa Rabbi-ka monitoring everything? This kind of
al-ruj’aa(8). A’rayita allazee conduct may not continue (kallaa – ‫)کال‬, ّ
yanhaa (9) ‘abdun izaa Sallaa (10). because if they did not desist, we would

nad’au naadiyah (17). Sa-nad’au kind of people; rather concentrate upon
az-zabaaniyah (18).Kalla laa carrying out your Nourisher’s manifesto
tuti’hu, wa asjud wa aqtarib (19).” and thus arrange to draw closer to Him.”

“Inna anzalnaa-hu fi layilat-il- blessing in spite of the prevalent well
Qadr (1). Wa maa adraaka maa known (‫)الف‬ ِ state of infamous depravity
layilat-il-Qadr (2). Layilat-il-Qadr (shahr -‫ ;)شہر‬because in its wake, descend
khayirun min alfi shahr(3). Divine Authorities (Malaa’ikatu - ‫)المالئکۃ‬
Tanazzal al-malaa’ikatu wa al- with divine revelations (wa al-Rooh - ‫و‬
Roohu fi-haa bi-izni Rabbi-him ‫ )الروح‬with their Lord’s permission,
min kulli amrin(4) salaamun (stop) heralding the message of peace and
Hiya hattaa matla’ul Fajr(5)”. security (salaamun - ‫ )سالم‬in all human
affairs (min kulli amrin -‫)من کل امر‬. And this
enforcement of peaceful conditions
continues (hiya - ‫ )ھی‬till the divine
guidance enlightens the earth with its
blessings (hattaa matla’il Fajr - ‫حتی مطلع‬
‫)الفجر‬.”

Authentic meanings of some Important


words

Lailun ‫ليل‬/Lailatun‫ ليلۃ‬: Both mean night, but


according to Marzuqi the word Lailun is used as
opposed to Nahar and the word Lailatun (‫ )ليلۃ‬is used
as opposed to Yaum. Lailatun possesses a wider and
more extensive meaning than Lailun; just as the word
Yaum has a wider sense than Nahar.

Shiin-ha-Ra ‫=شہر‬ Make it


notable/known/manifest/public/infamous (in a bad or
good sense), hire/contract for a month, stay a month,
month old, month, new moon, moon, full moon, any
evil thing that exposes its author to disgrace, a
vice/fault or the like, big & bulky, reputable/eminent.

Alif-Lam-Fa ‫ الف‬: Become a thousand. A certain


rounded number that is well known. Alif-Lam-Fa

to it habitually, he became familiar with it or
accustomed/habituated, became
sociable/companionable/friendly with him,

Lam-Alif-Kaf ‫ ل ا ک‬: = To send, to send a message,

towards. Mal’akatun ‫ملئکۃ‬: Message mission.
Malakun ‫ ملک‬Angel. According to Raghib and Abu
Hassan its root is Mim, Lam, Kaf, Malaka ‫ملک‬: plu.
Mala’ikatun ‫مالئکۃ‬: To have power or dominion over,
be capable of, able to do, rule over, give a support,
control. All the six variation of the root indicate the
meaning of power and strength, courage, intensity
and hardness.

that they were to establish close pursuit of
the Discipline and grant sustenance and
﴾٨﴿‫ِك ل َِم ْن َخ ِش َي َربَ ُه‬
َ ‫هْن َو َر ُضوا َع ْن ُه ۖ ٰذَ ل‬
ْ ُ ْ ‫َع‬ nourishment to their people. This was to
be the sustainable manifesto of their
society’s conduct (Zaalika Deen-ul-
Transliteration: Qayyimah – ‫)ذلک دين القيّمۃ‬. Needless to say
that those who refused to abide by the
“Lum yakun-il-lazeena kafaroo Discipline, from the people of the Book or
min ahlil-Kitaabi wa al- the polytheist communities are doomed to

illaa min ba’adi maa jaa-at-hum al- gardens under which rivers are flowing.
bayyinata(4); wa maa umiroo illa Therein they shall live forever, in a state
li-ya’bud-ul-laah mukhliseena la- where God satisfied with their
hu-addeena hunafaa’a wa performance, and they in love with Him.
yuqeemu as-salaata wa yu’too az- All this awaits them who have been
zakaat. Wa zaalika deen-ul- cautious of their Sustainer’s guidance!”

aamanu wa ‘amiloo as-saalihaati

oolaaika hum khayir-ul-
bariyyah(7). Jazaau-hum ‘inda
Rabbihim jannaatun ‘adnin tajree
min tahtihaa al-anhaaru khalideen
fee-ha Abadan. Raziyal-laahu ‘un-
hum wa razoo ‘un-hu. Zaalika li-
mun khashiya Rabba-hu(8).”

Chapter Al-Zulzilah (99)

‫ض‬ ِ ‫﴿﴾ َوأ َ ْخ َر َج‬ ١ ‫ض ِز ل َْزال ََها‬ُ ‫َت ْاْل َ ْر‬ِ ‫إِ َذا ُزل ِْزل‬
“The time will come when the earth
‫﴿﴾ َي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ‬ ٣ ‫ان َما ل ََها‬
ُ ‫نس‬ َ ‫اْل‬ِ ْ ‫﴿﴾ َوقَا َل‬ ٢ ‫أ َ ْثقَا ل ََها‬ revolving in its orbit (Zilzaala-ha) will be
‫َح‬ َ َ‫﴿﴾ بأ َ َن رب‬ َ
ٰ َ ‫ك أ ْو‬ َ َ ِ ٤ ‫ار َها‬ َ ‫ُت َح ِد ُث أ ْخ َب‬
shaken by a violent commotion (zulzilat).
َ ‫الن‬ Then the Earth shall disclose (ukhrajat-
‫ِي ْوا‬
َ ُ ِ‫اس أ ْش َتا ًتا ل‬ُ َ ‫﴿﴾ َي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ يَ ْص ُد ُر‬ ٥ ‫ل ََها‬ ‫ )اخرجت‬the misdeeds it was loaded with
ً ْ ‫﴿﴾ف ََمن يَ ْع َم ْل ِمثْقَا َل ذَ َرةٍ َخ‬
‫ِيا‬ ٦ ‫أ َ ْع َما ل َُه ْم‬ (athqaala-ha - ‫ ;)اثقالہا‬and humans will be
exclaiming in awe as to what was going to
﴾﴿ ٨ ُ‫شَرا َي َره‬ ً ٍ‫﴿﴾ َو َمن يَ ْع َم ْل ِمثْقَا َل ذَ َرة‬ ٧ ُ‫َي َره‬ happen. On that day the earth shall
virtually reveal (thuhaddith – ‫ ) تحدث‬all the
episodes it has witnessed upon its surface
Transliteration:
(akhbaara-ha – ‫ )اخبارھا‬because so will it be
willed by your Lord. On that day people
“Izaa Zulzilat-ul-Ardhu zilzaala-
will be wandering cut off from one another
ha; wa ukhrijat-il-Ardhu athqaala-
to be shown their accounts. So, whoever is
ha; wa qaala al-insaanu ma la-haa;
doing a particle worth (mithqaala Zarratin
youma’izin tuhaddithu akhbaara-
–‫ )مثقال ذرة‬of good shall see the reward
ha; bi anna Rabba-ka ouhaa la-haa;
thereof; and whoever indulges in a particle
youma-izin yasduru an-naasu
worth of evil, shall also face the
ashtaata li-yuraw a’maala-hum.
consequence thereof”.

٣ ‫ات ُص ْب ًحا‬ِ ‫ِي‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ فَا ل ُْم ِغ‬٢ ‫ق َْد ًحا‬ then raising a storm of dust, penetrate with
‫ان ل َِربِ ِه‬
َ ‫نس‬ َ ‫اْل‬ ِ ْ ‫﴿﴾ إِ َن‬ ٥ ‫﴿﴾ ف ََو َس ْط َن بِ ِه َج ْم ًعا‬٤ ‫َنق ًْعا‬ it into the midst of a human settlement
collectively. All that, in fact, testifies that
ِ ‫﴿﴾ َوإِنَ ُه لِ ُح‬
‫ب‬ ٧ ‫ِك ل ََش ِهيد‬ ٰ َ ‫﴿﴾ َوإِنَ ُه ع‬
َ ‫ََل ٰذَ ل‬ ٦ ‫ك ُنود‬َ َ‫ل‬ man is rebellious and disobedient to his
‫﴿﴾ أَف ََّل َي ْعل َُم إِذَا ُب ْع ِث َر َما ِِف‬ ٨ ‫ِي ل ََش ِديد‬
ِ ْ ‫الْ َخ‬ Lord, and he himself is witness to that
conduct of his; This conduct on his part is
‫﴾ إِ َن‬١٠﴿ ‫ور‬ ُ ‫﴿] َو ُح ِص َل َما ِِف‬٩ ‫ور‬
ِ ‫الص ُد‬ ِ ‫ا لْق ُُب‬ a proof that he is intensely devoted to the
love of wealth. Doesn’t he know about the
﴾﴿ َ َ ‫َربَ ُهم بِ ِه ْم َي ْو َم ِئ ٍذ ل‬
١ ‫خ ِبِي‬ time when the deeply buried mysteries
would be dug out; and whatever is in the

And then for those whose weight in the scale
of accountability is heavy, they will be in a

weight in the scale stands diminished, their

what do you know what that abyss is? A
“Al-Qaar’iah; Maa Al-Qaar’iah? blazing fire of remorse, lamentation and

Youma yakoonu an-Naasu kal-

Wa amma man khiffat Qaf-Ra-Ayn = to knock, strike, beat, hit the butt,

calamity that destroys a nation, adversity that comes
haawiah. Wa maa adraaka maa suddenly, a name of the day of resurrection, great
hiyah? Naarun haamiah.” abuse.

extend, stretch forth, furnish. furshan - to low (carry
burden), be thrown down (for slaughter) of small
animals of which flesh is used for food. farashun

not the right path. Had you learnt the
lesson of Belief in Divine guidance (al-
Yaqeen – ‫ )اليقين‬you would surely have
Transliteration: perceived the impending destruction.
After that, you would have judged your
“Alhaa-kum –ut-takaathur; hatta
conduct with an eye of certainty.
zurtum –ul-maqaabir. Kalla sawfa
Eventually, on the promised day or stage of
ta’lamoon. Thumma kalla sawfa
time (Youmai-zin – ‫)یومئذ‬, you would
ta’lamoon. Kalla lau ta’lamoona
certainly be interrogated on the treasures
‘ilm-ul-yaqeen, la-tarawunnal
you had accumulated (an-Naeem – ‫)النعيم‬.”
Jaheem. Thumma la-tarawunna-
ha ‘ayinal yaqeen. Thumma la-
tus’alunna youma’izin ‘an-in-
na’eem.”

Chapter Al-‘Asr (103)

‫﴿﴾ إِ َّل‬
٢ ‫ان لَ ِفي ُخ ْس ٍر‬ َ ‫نس‬ ِ ْ ‫﴿﴾ إِ َن‬

“The past chapters of history testify to the

made the target of deception and suffering;
except in those communities which

“Punishable is every one of that
‫اّل‬ ً ‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي َج َم َع َم‬ ١ ٍ‫َو يْل لِك ُ ِل ُه َم َزةٍ ل ُ َم َزة‬ contemptuous capitalist class who is
‫أ َ َن‬ ٢ ُ‫َوعَ َد َده‬
involved in slandering, vilification and
‫َما لَ ُه‬ ‫ب‬ ُ ‫﴿﴾ َي ْح َس‬ blaming the ordinary folks, and who has
َ‫﴿﴾ َو َما أ َ ْد َراك‬٤ ‫نبذَ َن ِِف ال ُْح َط َم ِة‬ َ ‫﴿﴾ ك ََّل ۖ ل َُي‬٣ ُ‫أ َ ْخل ََده‬ amassed fortunes and keep growing it
‫﴿﴾ ا ل َ ِِت َت َطلِ ُع‬ ٦ ُ‫ار اللَـ ِه ال ُْموق ََدة‬
further. They presume that their wealth
ُ َ‫﴿﴾ ن‬ ٥ ‫َما ال ُْح َط َم ُة‬ would grant their arrogance infinity. It
‫﴿﴾ ِِف َع َم ٍد‬ ٨ ‫هْي ُم ْؤ َص َدة‬ ِ ْ َ ‫﴿﴾إِنَ َها َعل‬ ٧ ‫ع َََل ْاْلَفْ ِئ َد ِة‬ never happens that way. They would
definitely be cast into a fire that suppresses
٩ ‫ُم َم َد َد ٍة‬
﴾﴿ all rage and fury. And what awareness you
have of that suppressing torment? That’s
Transliteration: a fire raised by God which targets and
burns minds and consciousness (al-af’idah
“Wayilun li-kulli humazatin – ‫)االفئدۃ‬. That fire is going to burn that class
lumazatin; allazi jama’a maalan of people perpetually (Mosadah – ‫ )موصدۃ‬,
wa ‘addada-hu; yahsubu an maala- in a lofty closed structure (prison) spread
hu akhlada-hu. Kalla. La- over long distances (‘amadin mumaddadah
yumbazanna fi al-hutamah; Wa – ‫) عمد ممددۃ‬.”

Naarullahi al-mu’qadah; allati Authentic meanings of some Important

a thing, stretch a thing, strain a thing, extend by
drawing or pulling, stretch forth, to prolong,
expand/elongate/lengthen a thing, spread or spread

with those ignoble ones possessed of pomp
‫﴾ َت أرمِي ِهم‬۳﴿ َ ‫ابيل‬ ِ ‫سل َ َعلَ أي ِه أم َط أيرا أَ َب‬ َ ‫َوأَ أر‬ and arrogance (‫يل‬ ِ ِ‫ب ا ْلف‬ ْ َ ‫ ?) بِأ‬Does He not

﴾٥﴿ ‫ول‬ ٍ ‫َّمأأ ُك‬ lost/waste?
Because He has sent against them groups
(‫ )ابَابِيل‬of eagle-eyed men (‫ ) طَ ْي ًرا‬to knock

them out, who keep striking/showering
them with intellectual arguments (‫) ِح َجا َر ٍة‬
“Alam tara kayifa fa’ala Rabbu-ka
from a written Scroll (‫س ِّجي ٍل‬ ِ ). Thus, with
bi-Ashaab il Feel”(1); “a-lam

turn them into a humble thing like eaten
“wa arsala ‘alayi-him tayiran

٤ ‫هْن ِم ْن َخ ْو ٍف‬ َ “people gathered from far and wide busy

keeping them tied in the bonds of love,
friendship and harmony (‫يالفِ ِه ْم‬ َ ِ‫ ) إ‬with the

passage of time –(passing of hot and cold

ِ ‫ص ْي‬ ِّ ‫) ِر ْحلَةَ ال‬,it is of utmost
َّ ‫شتَا ِء َوال‬
“Li-eelaafi qurayishin; eelaafi-him importance that they submit themselves in
rehlatash-shitaa’i was-sayif; fal- obedience to the Lord of this Center of
ya’budoo Rabba haadha-al-Bayit; Command ;And it should be made clear to
allazi at’ama-hum min joo’in wa them that this is the Authority That has

aamana-hum min khawf.” been providing them with sustenance
(‫ )أَ ْط َع َمهم‬in hunger and want (‫وع‬
ٍ ‫) ج‬, and
peace (‫ )آ َمنَهم‬in fear and apprehensions

(Addressing the holy Messenger) “Have

‫ِك ال ِذي‬ ١ ‫ك ِذ ُب بِال ِد ِن‬ َ ْ‫ أ َرأي‬you duly taken note of those who are
ُ ‫﴾و َّل يَ ُح‬ ُ
‫ام‬ َٰ‫ض ع‬
ِ ‫ََل َط َع‬ َ ﴿ ٢ ‫يم‬ َ ‫ َي ُدع ال َْي ِت‬divine Mode of Conduct (Ad-Deen)? Be it
practically falsifying (yukazziboo) the

‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي َن ُه ْم َعن‬٤ ‫ني‬ َ ِ‫﴿﴾ ف ََو يْل لِل ُْم َصل‬ ٣ ‫ني‬ِ ‫الْ ِم ْس ِك‬
understood once for all that these are the
ones who are driving away (yadu’u) the
‫ُه ْم‬ ‫﴿﴾ ال َ ِذي َن‬٥ ‫ون‬ َ ‫َسا ُه‬ ‫َص َّلتِ ِه ْم‬ helpless segment of society (al-yateem), and
﴾﴿ ٧ ‫ون‬ َ ‫ون ال َْما ُع‬
َ ‫﴿﴾ َو َي ْم َن ُع‬٦ ‫ون‬ َ ‫ُي َرا ُء‬
are not initiating (yahudhdhu) welfare
schemes for the destitute and the penniless
class (Ta’aam-il-Miskeen). Impose
Transliteration: punishment (wayilun) on this category of
responsible officials (Musalleen) who in
“Arayita allazi yukazzibu bid- fact exercise gross negligence (sahoon) in
Deen. Fa-dhaalika allazi yadu’ul carrying out their duties (salaati-him); who
Yateem. Wa laa yahudhdhu ‘alaa only are showing off their status or
ta’aamil Miskeen. Fa-wayilul lil- positions (hum yuraa’oon), but actually are
Musalleen allazina hum ‘an obstructing (yamna’oon) the flow of help,
salaati-him saahoon. Allazina hum assistance, kindness and welfare (al-
yura’oon; wa yamna’oona al- Maa’oon) to the people.”

community enormous increase in numbers

your Nourisher’s goals (fa-salli li-Rabbi-
Transliteration: ka), acquire control and mastery over the
current situation while remaining steadfast
“Inna a’tayina-ka al-kauthar. Fa- (Wa anhar). It is true that your present
salli li-Rabbi-ka wa anhar. Inna state of affairs (shaani-a-ka) stands far
shaani-a-ka huwa al-abtar.” from being perfect (al-abtar).”

Chapter 109 Al-Kaafiroon

‫﴿﴾ َّل أ َ ْع ُب ُد َما‬ َ Translation: Al-Kaafiroon (109)


َ ‫قُ ْل يَا أيُ َها الْكَا ِف ُر‬
١ ‫ون‬
‫﴿﴾ َو َّل‬٣ ‫ون َما أ َ ْع ُب ُد‬ َ
َ ‫﴿﴾ َو َّل أن ُت ْم عَابِ ُد‬ ٢ ‫ون‬
َ ‫َت ْع ُب ُد‬ “O Messenger, make an open Declaration
‫ون َما‬ َ ٤ ‫أَنَا عَابِد َما َع َبدتُ ْم‬
(Qul) to this effect : “O you who
َ ‫﴿﴾ َو َّل أن ُت ْم عَابِ ُد‬ purposefully hide the truth ( َ‫) ا ْل َكافِرون‬, I do
﴾﴿ ٦ ‫﴿﴾ لَك ُْم دِي ُنك ُْم َو ِِلَ دِي ِن‬٥ ‫أ َ ْع ُب ُد‬ not approve (‫ ) َال أَعْبد‬of the evil system you
are serving ( َ‫) تَ ْعبدون‬, and I do know that you
also are not going to submit to the
Transliteration: Discipline that I’m devoted to enforce.
Furthermore, I never have intended to
“Qul ya ayyuhal kaafiroona, la submit to what you have been following in
a’budu ma ta’budoona, wa la the past, and nor are you expected to
antum ‘aabidoona ma a’budu, wa submit to the discipline I’m following
la anaa ‘aabidum ma ‘abadtum, wa presently. Therefore, you may have your
la antum ‘aabidoona ma a’bud. own way of conduct, while I stand firm
La-kum Deenu-kum wa leea with my own particular way of conduct.”

Chapter An-Nasr (110) Translation: An-Nasr (110)

‫اس‬ َ ‫ت‬ َ ١ ُ‫إِذَا َجا َء َن ْص ُر اللَـ ِه َوالْ َف ْتح‬


“Now when God’s succor has come and the

System of Conduct in flocks, you must get
down to exert all your resources (fa-
sabbih) towards creating a general state in

“Idhaa jaa’a nasrullahi wa al-Fath. Rabbi-ka); and keep seeking His protection

reverts to you with mercy."

Chapter Al-Masad (111) Translation: Al-Masad (111)


‫﴾ َما أَ ْغنَى َع ْنه َماله‬١﴿ ‫َب‬ َّ ‫ب َوت‬ ٍ ‫تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَ َه‬ “The power of the one inciting the fire of
َ‫َذات‬ ‫نَا ًرا‬ ‫صلَى‬ْ َ ‫سي‬ َ ﴾٢﴿ ‫ب‬ َ ‫س‬َ ‫َك‬ ‫َو َما‬ enmity and hatred is at last smashed and
‫﴾ فِي‬٤﴿ ‫ب‬ ِ َ‫﴾ َوا ْم َرأَته َح َّمالَةَ ا ْل َحط‬٣﴿ ‫ب‬ ٍ ‫لَ َه‬ he suffered a final beating. His high
﴾٥﴿ ‫س ٍد‬ َ ‫ِجي ِدھَا َح ْب ٌل ِّمن َّم‬ position and resources were of no avail to
him. He shall be doomed to his destiny of a

burden of his inconsolable fury and
“Tabbat yadaa abi lahabin wa tabb aggression, now rendered free from the

words:
Kaf-Siin-Ba‫ = ' ک س ب ؛‬To gain, acquire, seek after,
gather (riches), do, commit, earn. 'kas-a-b' means a
wolf.

= Haa-Tay-Ba ‫ =ح ط ب ؛‬aid/assist,
incites/urges/instigates, slander, incline to someone's
desires, to be lean or meagre, collect (e.g. firewood),
firewood, collector offirewood, feed upon the small
and dry parts of the branches (camels), take upon
oneself a burden or responsibility.

Ha-Ba-Lam ‫ =ح ب ل ؛‬tie/fasten with rope, rope/cord,


covenant, a thing by means of which one
snares/catches/snares, obtaining an assurance/promise
of safety, snare, to entrap, to captivate, being
pregnant/full, bond, cause of union, link of
connexion, marriage, carotid artery, jugular vein,

calamity/misfortune, a foetus in the womb, grapevine,
one who binds, crisped/plaited/rope-like hair (e.g.
that of Ethiopians).

Miim-Siin-Dal ‫ =م س د ؛‬To twist a rope, twist a thing


well, pursue or journey laboriously or with energy,
hold on or continue a journey, render (person or
animal) lean/lank/light of flesh/slender, render one
lank in the belly, also to render it firm, tall and
slender, of goodly stature, compact of make (applied
to a woman).

= Lam-ha-Ba ‫ =ل ھ ب ؛‬To blaze fiercely/intensely,


inflame, burn with anger, Ardour of fire, flame, fiery
tempered person, abu lahab - father of flame. A
gap/space between two mountains, a cleft/fissure in a
mountain.

Chapter 112 – Al-Ikhlaas Translation: Al-Ikhlaas (112)


‫﴾ لَ ْم يَلِ ْد‬٢﴿ ‫ص َمد‬ َّ ‫﴾ اللَّـه ال‬١﴿ ‫“ ق ْل ھ َو اللَّـه أَ َح ٌد‬O Messenger, proclaim openly (Qul) that
﴾٤﴿ ‫﴾ َولَ ْم يَكن لَّه كف ًوا أَ َح ٌد‬٣﴿ ‫ َولَ ْم يولَ ْد‬Allah is an Entity Who stands
unique/distinguished/independent
Transliteration: (Ahadun). Allah is the Eternal & the
Ultimate Source of creation (‫ص َمد‬
َّ ‫ )ال‬. He
“Qul huwa Allahu ahadun. Allahu begets not and neither is He begotten. And
as-samad. Lum yalid wa lum there is none that can be compared with
yoolad. Wa lum yakun la-hu Him.”

Chapter 113 – Al-Falaq Translation: Al-Falaq (113)


‫﴾ ِمن ش َِّر َما‬١﴿ ‫ق‬ ِّ ‫ق ْل أَعوذ بِ َر‬
ِ َ‫ب ا ْلفَل‬
‫﴾ َو ِمن‬٣﴿ ‫ب‬ َ َ‫ق إِ َذا َوق‬ ِ ‫﴾ َو ِمن ش َِّر َغ‬٢﴿ ‫ق‬
ٍ ‫اس‬ َ َ‫“ َخل‬Proclaim O Messenger that “I seek
protection only with the Lord of the entire

﴾٥﴿ ‫س َد‬ َ ‫ َح‬His created ones; and from the darkness of
evil ( ‫ق‬ ِ ‫)شر َغ‬
ٍ ‫اس‬ ِّ when it has overspread and
Transliteration: become prevalent (‫ب‬ َ َ‫) إِ َذا َوق‬, and from the
evil of the secret vicious allegiances (‫ت‬ ِ ‫)النَّفَّاثَا‬
“Qul a’oodhu bi-rabbil-falaq. Min being agreed upon (‫ ;) فِي ا ْلعقَ ِد‬and from the
sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri evil of the jealous ones (‫اس ٍد‬ ِ ‫ ) َح‬when they
ghaasiqin idhaa waqab. Wa min are bent on jealousy.”
sharrin-naffathaati fil ‘uqad. Wa
min sharri haasidin idhaa hasad.” Authentic meanings of some important
words:

Ayn-Waw-Thal ‫ =ع و ذ‬to seek or take protection,


refuge, be next, the bone (flesh). Ma'aadh - a refuge,
Ma'aadh Allaah - I seek refuge with Allaah, God
forbid, Allaah be my refuge.'Udhtu (prf. 1st. sing.): I
sought refuge/protection.
A'uudhu (imp. 1st. sing.): I seek refuge.
Ya'uudhuuna (imp. 3rd. m. pl.): they seek refuge.
U'iidh (imp. 1st. sing. vb. IV): I seek refuge for, do
commend (to your) protection.
Ista'idh (prt. m. sing. vb. 10): seek refuge!
Ma'aadhun (pis. pic.): refuge.

Fa-Lam-Qaf ‫ = فلق‬it became split/cleft/cloven/cracked,


divided it lengthwise, fissure, longitudinal division,
daybreak/dawn, uttered/performed what was
admirable/wonderful, to strive/exert, become
big/bulky/fat/plump, whole creation, all beings/things that
are created, a piece/fragment broken off, the cleaver.
Shiin-Ra-Ra ‫ = ش ر ر‬to do evil, be ill natured, wicked.
yashirru/yasharru - to find fault, defame. sharrun (pl.
ashrar) - evil, bad, wicked, vicious ones. It is noteable that
shurrun is an exceptional form of elative adjective while
the measure for elative in Arabic is afa'la. shararun (pl.
ashraar) - sparks of fire.

Gh-Siin-Qaf ‫ =غ س ق‬darkness, the night; become


obscure, shed tears, poured water; ice-cold
darkness, intense coldness; watery/thick purulent
matter that flows or drips, dark/murky/cold fluid.
Waw-Qaf-Ba ‫ =و ق ب‬to set, come upon, overspread,
disappear (sun or moon), enter.
Nun-Fa-Tha ‫ =ن ف ث‬to whisper (evil suggestions), below
designed, occult endeavours, suggest a thing into the heart,
inspire or whisper into the mind, puff/blow without

spitting (e.g. blowing on knots), eject from the mouth,
enchanting.

Ayn-Qaf-Dal ‫ = ع ق د‬to tie in a knot, make a knot,


strike a bargain, contract, make a compact, enter into
an obligation, bind, judgement, consideration of one's
affairs, management, promise of obedience or vow of
allegiance.'aqadat (prf. 3rd. f. sing.): she made a
covenant, ratified agreements.
'aqadtum (prf. 2nd. m. pl.): We bound, took in
earnest.
'uquud (n. pl.): obligation. Its sing. is 'aqdun /
'uqdatun (n.): knot, tie, firm resolution, judgement,
consideration of one's affairs, management regulating
and ordering of one's affairs. It also signifies a
promise of obedience or vow of allegiance. aqada

Chapter 114 – An-Naas Translation: An-Naas (114)


‫﴾ إِلَـ ِه‬٢﴿ ‫س‬ ِ ‫﴾ َملِ ِك النَّا‬١﴿ ‫س‬ ِ ‫ب النَّا‬ ِّ ‫ق ْل أَعوذ بِ َر‬
“Proclaim that “I seek protection only
‫س‬ ِ ‫س َوا‬ ْ ‫ا ْل َو‬ ‫ش ِّر‬َ ‫﴾ ِمن‬٣﴿ ‫س‬ ِ ‫النَّا‬
with the Sustainer and Nourisher of
‫س ِوس فِي صدو ِر‬ ْ ‫﴾ الَّ ِذي ي َو‬٤﴿ ‫س‬ ِ ‫ا ْل َخنَّا‬
mankind, who is the Lord of all mankind,
﴾٦﴿ ‫س‬ ِ ‫﴾ ِمنَ ا ْل ِجنَّ ِة َوالنَّا‬٥﴿‫س‬ ِ ‫النَّا‬
the sovereign authority of all mankind,
from the wickedness of hidden conspiracies
Transliteration:
(‫س‬ِ ‫س ا ْل َخنَّا‬ ْ ‫ )ا ْل َو‬which infuse intrigue and
ِ ‫س َوا‬
temptation into the hearts of mankind,
“Qul a’oodhu bi-rabb-in-naas.
coming from the invisible powerful ones
Malik-in-naas. Ilaah-in-naas; min
(‫ )الجنۃ‬as well as the common folks.”
sharr-il-waswaas-il-khannas, allazi
yuwaswisu fi sudoor-in-naas; min
Authentic meanings of important words:
al-jinnati wan-naas.”
Kh-Nun-Siin ‫ =خ ن س‬To retreat/recede/drawback, retire
or hold back, lag behind, shrink and hide/withdraw
oneself, remain behind a company of people (as opposed
to going with them [ syn. takhallafa] ), sneak something
away (so as not to be seen), keep one back, place one
behind or after, contract/draw together or make to
contract/draw together.

Waw-Siin-Waw-Siiin ‫ =وس وس‬to whisper evil, make evil


suggestions, prompt false things.
