Batch: 2018 - 2020 Term: I

Course : Organizational Behavior-I (Core Credits: 3.0
Subject)
Course Instructor: Romina Mathew.Shabnam No. of Sessions: 20
Priyadarshini.

OVERVIEW
Course Description The management of complex organizations requires an understanding
of the nature of human behavior in corporate and other organizations,
styles of motivations, company leadership, power and authority,
strategies of organizational design and change, teamwork and
collaboration, and the measurement of organizational effectiveness.
Interacting with other people and in organizations is characterized by
complex dynamics. This course is designed to help students study
these very interesting complexities by both standing back and
considering these dynamics and by directly experiencing some of them
throughout the course activities. The combination of academic
perspective and personal engagement creates a powerful learning
experience.
Learning Objectives The objective of the course is to help students learn about themselves
and how to deal and work with other people. Organizations are
increasingly expecting individuals to be able to work in teams, at least
some of the time and this course would help students in that. The
course would also help students who want to be entrepreneurs.
Pedagogy The pedagogy for the course has been designed considering the
requirement of the course, the learning styles of the present student
group and the basic assumptions of adult learning. For a course
focusing on teaching leadership skills, experiential learning would be
the most effective method. Hence the attempt is to turn the classroom
into a laboratory and create conditions for understanding concepts
through experience as well as readings.

A number of cases would be discussed to ensure that the students are

able to relate the concepts with real life business situations and
interactions. The idea is to ensure that the learning process is problem
centered rather than content oriented.

The course will substantially rely on experiential approaches such as

role-plays, exercises and games so that the students are able to
assimilate their own learning points from these experiences.

Movies would be used as a basis for class discussions. The use of

feature films allows students to see concepts in a contextual setting,
allowing them to use critical thinking much more than when using
textbooks (Bluestone, 2000).
The first step in any personal development plan is self-assessment.
The course provides several self-assessment tools which would be
used to help students develop an awareness of their self. This would
help them in identifying areas for improvement.
Some sessions in the course would be handled by industry
practitioners providing a real life perspective to the issues discussed.
Course Requirements This type of course requires students to take responsibility for their own
learning. In order for an experiential course to be successful, students
must do all the reading and preparation and participate actively in the
classroom. The instructors’ role would be of a facilitator rather than a
lecturer.
