LESSON PLAN

Unit: Spatial Awareness Date: Oct 1st-2nd Standard: SHAPE 1, 2, 4

Lesson Focus: Spatial Prepositions Grade: K-1st Technology Used: Projector, voice-over, plickers

Sequence: Day 3 of 3 Facility/Equipment: Hula hoops, Elephants Aloft book, projector

Lesson Intro: Thank you for gathering around the projector. Today we are going to be exploring how we can move our bodies in relation to a hula hoop and in
space. We will be reading and looking at a book that will be showing us examples of many different ways we move our bodies. Elephant Aloft is about the
adventures of two elephants as they travel to Africa to visit their Auntie. The book is going to show us how the elephants interact with different things and objects
around the world!”

Learning Objectives Assessment

Each objective should include: a) Performance (the knowledge or ability the For each objective include your procedure for determining whether
learner will gain as a result of this lesson), b) Conditions (under which the objectives have been met:
learner will perform, and c) Criterion (the level of performance considered
acceptable):

Students will…

1. Understand and respond appropriately to majority of the terms of over, 1. Students will have opportunities to respond to questions asked while the

2. Understand and recognize the relation of an object to one’s body 2. Informal assessment - Students will be asked a question, shown a
through observation. picture, and given 3 possible answers. Using their plickers, they will
determine which answer is correct.

3. Respect others, equipment, and learning environment. 3. In-class observation will be used while the students are engaging in the
activity.

Safety considerations and/or modifications for special needs students: Students will be encouraged to explore and try new things but advised not to do
anything they feel would hurt their bodies. Students will be reminded to be careful when moving their hula hoop through space, for they could accidentally hurt
their classmates. In regards to special needs students, smaller hula hoops will be given to aid in movement and exploration.

Closure: Thank you for lining up quickly and quietly. Today we explored different ways that we could move our bodies through space by using a hula hoop. The
elephants in our book that we read showed us how we can move our bodies in a hot air balloon in relation to real life things like oceans, buildings, cities, and many
other things. Here is a picture. Take a look at this picture! Is the hula hoop; a) below the woman girl, b) beside the girl, c) above the girl. Use your plickers and
show me your answer. The correct answer was c and it looks like most of you go it correct! Way to go! The woman is holding the hula hoop above her head.
Awesome work today. Next time you guys come in, we will be starting a new unit.
