PREFACE
MESC (Materi al s and Equipment Standards and Code) SPE documents reflect the views, at the time of publication, of:
Shell Global Solutions Internati onal B.V. (Shell GSI)
and/or
Shell International Exploration and Production B.V. (SIEP}
and/or
other Shell Service Companies.
They are based on the experience acquired during their involvement with the design, construction, operation and
maintenance of processing units and facilities, and they are supplemented with the experience of Shell Operating Units.
Where appropriate they are based on, or reference is made to, internationa l, regional, nationa l and industry standards.
The objective is to set the recommended standard for good design and engineering practice applied by Shell companies
operating an oil refinery, gas handling installation, chemical plant, oil and gas production facility, or any other such
facility, and thereby to achieve maximum technical and economic benefit from standardization.
The information set forth in these publications is provided to Shell companies for their consideration and decision to
implement. This is of particular importance where MESC SPEs may not cover every requirement or diversity of condition
at each locality. The system of MESC SPEs is expected to be sufficiently flexible to allow individual Operating Units to
adapt the information set forth in MESC SPEs to their own environment and requirements.
When Contractors or Manufacturers/Suppliers use MESC SPEs they shall be solely responsible for the quality of work
and the attainment of the required design and engineering standards. In particular, for those requirements not
specif ically covered, the Principal will expect them to follow those practices, which will achieve the same level of
integr ity as reflected in the MESC SPEs. If in doubt, the Contractor or Manufacturer/Supplier shall, without detracting
from his own responsibility, consult the Principa l or its technical advisor.
The right to use MESC SPEs is granted by Shell GSI, in most cases under Service Agreements primarily with Shell
companies and other companies receiving technical advice and servi ces from Shell GSI or another Shell Service
Company. Consequently, three categories of users of MESC SPEs can be distinguished:
1) Operating Units having a Service Agreement w ith Shell GSI or other Shell Service Company. The use of MESC
SPEs by these Operating Units is subject in all respects to the terms and conditions of the relevant Service
Agreement.
2) Other parties who are authorized to use MESC SPEs subject to appropriate contractual arrangements (whether
as part of a Service Agreement or otherwise).

PART I INTRODUCTION
1.1 SCOPE
This MESC SPE specifies requirements for spiral wound gaskets.
This specification shall apply in addition to the applicable MESC Buying Description,
purchase order or requisition sheet.
This specification is written as amendments and supplements to ASME B16.20:2012, which
are covered in Part II of this MESC SPE. The clause numbering of ASME B16.20:2012 has
been retained and any amendments are identified as 'Add, 'Modify to read or 'Delete'. Any
clauses of ASME B16.20:2012 that are not amended or supplemented by this MESC SPE
shall apply as written.
1.3 DEFINITIONS
The Contractor is the party that carries out all or part of the design, engineering,
procurement, construction, commissioning or management of a project, or operation or
maintenance of a facility. The Principal may undertake all or part of the duties of the
Contractor.
The Manufacturer/Supplier is the party that manufactures or supplies equipment and
services to perform the duties specified by the Contractor.
The Principal is the party that initiates the project and ultimately pays for its design and
construction. The Principal will generally specify the technical requirements. The Principal
may also include an agent or consultant authorised to act for, and on behalf of, the
Principal.
The word shall indicates a requirement.
The word should indicates a recommendation.
1.4 ABBREVIATIONS
PTFE Polytetrafluoroethylene
3.2.2 Add:
The filler material shall be 0.2 mm (0.0079 in) above the winding material.
3.3 Modify to read:
All materials shall be in accordance with the MESC Buying Description.
Add:
Gasket components made from austenitic stainless steel shall be in the solution
annealed condition.
Gasket components made from austenitic stainless steel shall be able to
successfully pass an intergranular corrosion test in accordance with ASTM A 262,
Practice E.
Filler material made from expanded graphite shall comply with MESC SPE 85/203.
Filler material made from PTFE shall comply with either ASTM D 4894 or ASTM D
4895.
Paints, coating or plating shall not contain cadmium, zinc or any other detrimental
metal.
Gaskets for oxygen service containing non-metallic materials, shall be compatible
with oxygen service, for the full design temperature range specified in the buying
description, at a pressure of 103.4 barg (1500 psig). These gaskets in their final
material composition (including all additives), shall be tested to meet all the
requirements of the following test methods:
The final BAM or WHA test report shall be submitted with the order.
NOTE: The Institution for the raw materials and chemical industry in Germany
(Berufsgenossenschaft Rohstoffe und chemische lndustrie, short: BG RCI) publishes
a list of nonmetallic materials compatible with oxygen as tested by BAM Federal
Institute for Materials Research and Testing (Bundesanstalt fur Materialforschung und
-prufung, short: BAM), wi th the title:
BGI Merkblatt M034-1, Supporting document to code of practice M 034e ,,Oxygen"
(BGI 61?e) of the German Social Accident Insurance.
3.4.1 Add:
In case the material is not mentioned in Table 19, the ASTM designation of the
material shall be used.
Gaskets without a centering ring shall have a marking on a tag, attached to the
package or gasket.
3.4.3 Add:
Gaskets for oxygen service shall not have a colour code.
3.5 Add Inspection
The Manufacturer shall demonstrate that the product has passed the Type
Acceptance Test as per MESC SPE 85/300.
Gaskets with graphite filler shall be of a fire-tested design and certified in
accordance with API 6FB.
Gaskets for oxygen service shall be thoroughly cleaned and inspected with bright
white and ultra-violet light. Gaskets shall not be solvent-cleaned at any stage.
3.6 Add Preparation for despatch I shipment
Each gasket shall be free from sharp edges, burrs, organic substances or any other
foreign particulate matter.
The Manufacturer shall package the separate and combined gaskets in such a
manner that the gaskets will not be damaged during transportation or storage.
Packaged gasket(s) shall be provided with the manufacturer name, trademark,
MESC number, nominal size, pressure class, material designation of the gasket
parts and manufacturing date.
Gaskets for oxygen service shall be packaged as a minimum as follows:
Gaskets shall be packaged individually;
The packaging method shall ensure that the oxygen-clean produced parts are
not contaminated;
Packaging shall be carried out immediately after final inspection;
Double-bagging is required. Requirements for double-bagging and labeling are

as follows:
Inner Bag
The inner bag protects the cleanliness of the part. After a part has been
precision cleaned, it shall be bagged in an oxygen compatible film. The film
used for bagging oxygen system parts shall be as clean as the item being
packaged. FEP (Teflon) or CTFE (Aclar) film are commonly used for the inner
bag.
Outer Bag
The outer bag is used primarily as a vapor barrier and to protect the inner bag.
It shall protect the inner bag and the part from abrasion, particles, and
moisture. The outer bag shall be impermeable to moisture, and is commonly
made of polyethylene.
Each sealed plastic bag shall be labelled and marked clearly specifiying;
"Oxygen service - Only Open in Clean Room", BAM Certificate No., OEM
