We’re glad you’ve found our church! We hope you’ll find us to be
an encouraging, friendly group of people. While we don’t make
any claims to be perfect, at our church we come together to help
make the kingdom of God a reality on earth by loving God and
loving our neighbor.
Growing Together....
Worship Series
Each of us has been called by Jesus! How do we
respond? What does a generous heart look like? Who
demonstrates an attitude of gratitude? Our Fall
stewardship campaign will look at these questions. No matter where we
are in our relationship with Jesus, we can GROW. Let us each
prayerfully consider what God has done in our lives, and how we want
to give thanks. As a church, the Lord can take our combined efforts, and
do more than we can imagine. TOGETHER, we can do all things, through
Christ! Commitment Sunday is All Saints Sunday, November 4.
Vacation Notice: The Lead Pastor and Youth Coordinator will
be on vacation next week, from October 22-28.

For Our Youngest Friends
and Their Parents
A professionally staffed nursery is available for children birth through
age three during all services and Sunday School on the lower level. An
usher will be happy to direct you. Additionally, a Parent Room is
available in the Parlor adjacent to the Sanctuary, for viewing and hearing
all services. Please ask an usher to show you the way. All restrooms are
equipped with changing tables.
Sunday Children's Worship
During 9am and 11am Services
Calling all children! Children 3 years old through 5th grade are invited to
come and be a part of our new Children's Worship time downstairs
following the Children's Message. There they will have opportunities to
encounter God through scripture, music, prayers, and other meaningful
and fun ways. Elementary-age children will return to the sanctuary and
gather with the congregation for the benediction each week. At 9:00am,
Pre-Schoolers move to their 10:10am Sunday School room. If you have

Children's Sunday School
Sunday School, a time of bible discovery with friends, invites all children
to come and learn at 10:10am. Lynn Bremer leads the elementary class
(Room 106) and Sherry Bryant leads our all new Preschool/Kindergarten
class (Room 110). Classrooms are found in the Education Wing.
Staff Openings at Aldersgate Church
Church Administrator needed -
On behalf of Aldersgate’s Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC), we
share our church administrator, Amy O’Brien, was recently offered an
opportunity for a career change. Amy feels led by God to accept that
opportunity, and so her last day was Friday, October 5, 2018. We deeply
appreciate Amy’s service to our church for the past 11 years; and as she
leaves us, we send our prayers, gratitude, love, and good wishes with her
and her daughter, Erin. If you are interested or know someone that may
be interested in learning more about the position please contact Greg

Kitchen Coordinator needed -
Elizabeth Peterson has served as our Kitchen Coordinator for the past
three years and her time as coordinator ended September 30, 2018. Her
time, energy and dedication to the position is appreciated and we thank
her for all she has done!

United Methodist Men
Flower Bulb Sale
The United Methodist Men’s group will be conducting a sale of iris roots,
glads, and jonquils bulbs in the Reed Room on Saturday, November 3 rd,
9am-4pm, and Sunday, November 4th following the 11am service until
2pm. We also invite other church members to donate any extra plants or
bulbs from their own source to this sale. The profits from this sale will
continue to support the men’s group of many church building
improvements. Come let’s find homes for these excess plants.
 Adult Bible Study Opportunity
YOU ARE INVITED!
The Faith Walk Adult Class that meets in the Fellowship Hall downstairs
at 10:00am on Sunday morning is studying the Book of Isaiah. Using the
Genesis to Revelation series, each lesson asks three main questions:
1. What does this passage say? In other words, let's get the facts
straight!
2. What does the passage mean? How did the first hearers understand
the passage in their time?
3. What might the passage mean to me, in my life, here, today? How
can I live this passage?
The lesson, then, moves from information in/about the passage to
questions of personal discipleship. You are invited!

Are you a young professional or parent seeking to connect with others?
We invite you to a set-apart time of fellowship, encouragement, and
spiritual growth. We have begun a video series entitled “The Circle
Maker” during the Sunday School hour (10:10-10:50am). We meet in the
Hospitality Room on the lower level, and all materials are provided. You
don’t need to do anything other than show up and enjoy.

Joyful Noise Singers
Children (grades 1-6) are invited to gather in the Sanctuary from 12:15-
12:30am (by the organ after 11:00am service) with Rafael. This will be a
time for the children to learn more about music and rehearse for
upcoming opportunities to sing in worship as they glorify God. Contact

Children's Ministry is growing!!
Help is needed to fulfill our calling in the lives of our parish
children. Adult “helpers” are needed during the 9:00am Children's
Worship Time and during the 10:00am Children's Sunday School time,
usually just once a month. Please contact Pastor Julie Nitzsche at

Save the Date! Children’s Nativity
All children and youth are invited to participate in our Children's
Nativity, "ON THE ROAD TO BETHLEHEM", which will be held on
Saturday, December 15th. If you have a younger child (age 4 through
2nd grade,) please contact MaryAnne Thornton or Pastor Julie and let
them know. The next practice for older children will be on Monday,

 Sisters in Scripture
The Sisters in Scripture Sunday School Class (Room 211) has a small
group DVD bible study, Twelve Women of the Bible. Lysa TerKuerst, Elisa
Morgan, Jeanne Stevens and other leaders look at the spiritual lessons
Youth Sunday School learned from twelve biblical women and what they mean for your life

Sip and Chat Host Needed
Would you like to be a Sip and Chat host? We need hosts for
Aldersgate Youth Praise Band the following Sundays: October 28, November 4 and
The Aldersgate Youth Praise Band ministry is seeking an adult Christian to
support and direct youth volunteers in expressing a contagious love of Jesus December 30. An information table is set up in the Reed

Wreath Youth Group Fundraising Event
Today is our final Sunday selling in the Reed Room! Help support our youth
Morning Study
and join in the spirit of the holidays by participating in our Christmas wreath
fundraising event. The proceeds will support our youth in ministry, fellowship
and Fellowship
and in mission. The funds our youth raise will go towards at Aldersgate
reducing the out of pocket expense for youth and their
families to attend youth ministry events including our Church
annual Virginia Conference Retreats, District Retreat and
for some, your purchase will support their efforts to go "Struggles in Faith: A Study of 1 Samuel," a seven-week study, has begun
into the mission field this summer with the Application on Tuesday mornings at 10am in the Choir Room. We will meet for

drawer or closet or tubby full of fabric? We need
you! The Living Nativity ministry needs more
costumes, and we are in need of folks to help make
them. Patterns and fabric will be provided, and they
range from very easy to mildly intricate. Please join

We remember the Saints
On All Saints Sunday, November 4, we will remember the members of
Aldersgate who have died since November 1, 2017. In addition, if you
have a friend or family member you would like to remember in the All
Saints Sunday bulletin, please write the name on the tear-off flap of the
Worship Bulletin or email aldersgate@cvaumc.org. All names are due by
9am on Tuesday, October 30.
NEX-GEN Virginia Conference
Youth Fall Retreats
Aldersgate youth are encouraged to attend the annual Virginia Conference
Youth Retreat Weekends. This is a fun weekend of activities, music, over 2
night and 2 days.
Middle School Retreat Details (Grade 6th – 8th Only)
Retreat Weekend will be Friday, November 9 til Sunday November 11.
High School Retreat Details (Grades 9th – 12th Only)
Retreat Weekend will be Friday, November 30 til Sunday, December 2
High School Full Price and the final date to reserve a spot for the Weekend
Retreat with $145.00 payment by Sunday, November 11. Registration and
Refunds will follow the Virginia Conference Policy.

Confirmation Information Luncheon
for Youth & Parents
On November 18, 2018, at 12:15pm, youth and their parents are invited to
attend an information luncheon regarding the confirmation program at
Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Confirmation is a series of classes that
help youth currently in the sixth grade or higher explore their faith and discern
whether they are ready to make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ! During
confirmation classes, confirmands learn about the meaning of Christian faith,
the history and teaching of the United Methodist Church, an explanation of the
sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, and the membership vows of

Middle and High School Youth

Volunteers for Sunday Night
Youth Dinner
Our Youth Group for 2018-2019 is in full swing and each Sunday night,
the Middle School and High School youth join for a time of fellowship
over a meal from 6:15pm-6:45pm. Youth Group is seeking adult
volunteers, Sunday School Classes or other adult small groups in the
church who would be willing to volunteer to assist with our Sunday
Night Youth Group Dinner. We would ask that the night you volunteer,
you would help prepare or pick up our meal, set up food for buffet style
serving, join us for dinner and fellowship and help us with cleaning
up. If you can serve the youth in this area for one meal this year, please
see the available dates in the Reed Room (meal stipend monies are
available to support this ministry). For more information, contact

PACEM Ministry
Help Needed!
Aldersgate UMC will once again host the PACEM (People and
Congregations Engaged in Ministry) Women’s Shelter from November
10 through the 17. Opportunities to help include greeting our guests as
they arrive, laundering towels, personal laundry, preparing snacks,
helping in the kitchen, spending time with our guests, and staying
overnight. Volunteer sign-up sheets are available in the Reed
Room. Items also are being collected for the shelter through Sunday,
November 11. Donation boxes will be located in the Reed Room and the
Welcome Center.
Personal items: Chapstick, lotion, ladies socks (athletic and dress).
Food: Gum, mints, hard candy, snack bags of potato chips, pretzels,
Cheetos, soft snack bars, tea bags, hot chocolate mix, lemonade mix,
Splenda and sugar.

Youth Mission Blast Other: New or gently used bath towels and current magazines.
Monetary contributions will be accepted to buy food and paper goods,
