Section 1. System Requirements

To use the ALSTOM T&D Protection & Control Group Product Catalogue the minimum system
requirements are as follows:

1.1 486 processor (Pentium recommended)


1.2 8MB RAM (12MB recommended)
1.3 4MB free hard disk space
1.4 CD-ROM drive
1.5 VGA video adaptor and monitor (256 colour recommended)
1.6 MS Windows 95 operating system

Section 2. Installing the CD-ROM Catalogue

Note: Before installing the Product Catalogue please close all applications and make
sure that no auto-start applications (such as Microsoft Office Buttons) are running.

2.1 Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.


2.2 The installation program will automatically start.
2.3 Follow the on-screen prompts. You will be asked where on your hard disk you wish to install
the Product Catalogue. The default directory is C:\ALSTOM\CDROM. If you wish to install
the Product Catalogue to this directory, click Continue. If you wish to install the Product
Catalogue to a different directory, type in the new directory and click Continue.
2.4 The program files will be copied to your hard disk. Following this you will be prompted when
the installation is complete.
2.5 Click the Start Button on the Taskbar, Select Programs then ALSTOM T&D P&C. Then click
the Acrobat Reader 3.0 Setup icon to install Acrobat Reader 3.0.

Section 3. Running the CD-ROM Catalogue

Note: Before running the Product Catalogue please ensure that the installation
described in Section 2 has been completed.

3.1 To run the Product Catalogue click the Start Button on the Taskbar, Select Programs then
ALSTOM T&D P&C. Then click the Product Catalogue icon.
3.2 If it is the first time you have run the program you will be asked to fill in a registration form.
Once completed, this can either be printed for posting or can be faxed from your computer if
you have a fax-modem port..

Section 4. The Main Screen

Under the heading of Publications there are six buttons which access index screens as described in
Sections 4.1 to 4.6 below. A full description of the index screen layout and operation is given in
Section 5.

4.1 Products Listed by TYPE


Displays an index screen which allows you to search for a relay either by typing in part of the
required product name, or by browsing through an alphabetically sorted list.

4.2 Products Listed by Device Ref.


Displays an index screen which allows you to search for a relay either by typing in part of the
required Device Reference, or by browsing through a numerically sorted list.

4.3 INSTRUMENT Publications


Displays an index screen showing all instrument publications in an alphabetically sorted list.

4.4 PUBLICATIONS Listing


Displays an index screen showing all publications on the CD-ROM. You can search either by
typing in part of the required publication number, or by browsing through an alpha-
numerically sorted list..

4.5 SERVICE MANUALS


Displays an index screen listing all available Service Manuals. The list is sorted by publication
number and can be searched by typing in part of the required publication number, or by
browsing through an alpha-numerically sorted list..

4.6 SUPPLEMENT Publications


Displays a screen which shows a list of main supplement buttons on the left, and a
Supplement Publication Listing button on the right. Main supplements can be viewed directly
by clicking on a button. The Supplement Publication Listing button shows an index screen
listing all supplement publications in order of publication number.

Under the heading of Features there are 4 buttons which access the screens described below.

4.7 Interactive Application Guide


Shows the Interactive Application Guide as described in Section 8.

4.8 World Representatives


This screen shows the principal world representatives of the ALSTOM T&D Protection & Control
Group around the world.

4.9 Catalogue Setup


Displays the setup screen where options such as font size, word-wrapping etc may be set.

4.10 Install / Produce Supplement Disk


Displays an options screen from which Supplement Disks may be produced, amended or
installed. An explanation of these features is given in Section 9.

The picture above shows the ‘Select by Product Type’ index screen. All other index screens have a
similar layout and operation. The controls on the form are explained below. Note that for controls 5.3
& 5.4 click the small downwards arrow at the right hand side of the control to expand the list.

5.1 Search Box


Type text into this box and the system searches for it in the left-hand column. If it is found the
Main List is scrolled to the appropriate position.

5.2 Main List


Contains the list of publications in the appropriate order for the particular index screen. Click
on an entry in the list to view its Sections (see 5.3) and Related Publications (see 5.4). Double-
click an entry to view the publication at the default settings. See Section 8.4 for more details
concerning showing publications of diffrent languages.

5.3 Section List


Shows the section headings for the publication highlighted in the list. When selecting a section
from this list the width of the list increases allowing more text to be visible. Select a section of
interest in the required publication and then viewing it will take you straight to that section in
the publication.

5.4 Related Publications List


Lists related publications for the publication highlighted in the main list. Select an entry in the
list and click the View button to view the related publication.

5.5 Summary Bar


Gives details of the currently highlighted publication, it’s language and section.

5.8 A publication may be viewed at any available page number. Use these controls to set the
required page number before pressing the View button.

5.9 View Button


Press this button to view the selected publication in Acrobat Reader 3.0.
N.B. If the CD-ROM drive can not be located by the program the following message will be
displayed “Please make sure the ALSTOM Protection & Control Catalogue CD-ROM is insrted
into the CD-ROM drive then press Retry, otherwise press Cancel to return to the index screen.”
If Retry is pressed the program will make another attempt to locate the CD-ROM drive up to a
maximum of four times. If this is still unseccessful a box will appear asking for the CD-ROM
drive to be selected. Select the CD-ROM drive from the drop-down list and press OK. If the
problem persists, select the CD-ROM drive again, place a check mark (X) next to “Ignore CD-
ROM drive location tests” by clicking the text and press OK.

5.10 Print Button


Press this button to print the publication directly using the default settings. To choose print
settings, firstly view the publication in Acrobat Reader and select File/Print Setup from the
Acrobat menu then select File/Print from the Acrobat Reader menu bar to print the
publication. Printing from Acrobat Reader should also be used if only specific pages of a
publication are required.

5.11 Main Menu Button


Press this button to leave the index screen and return to the Main Screen.

Section 6. Viewing Publications

Each publication in the ALSTOM T&D Protection & Control Group Product Catalogue is displayed in
Acrobat Reade 3.0. Help on using Acrobat Reader 3.0 can be obtained when viewing a publication by
selecting ‘Acrobat Reader Help’ from the ‘Help’ menu.

The publications when displayed in Acrobat Reader have two special features which allow you to find
information quickly. These are thumbnail pictures and bookmarks as described below.

6.1 Thumbnails
When the ‘View’ button has been clicked in an index screen the required publication is loaded
into Acrobat Reader with a set of thumbnail pictures visible on the left, as shown in the
diagram below. Clicking these thumbnails or dragging a square on them will view that
portion of the actual page on the right hand section of the screen. This method of identifying
sections of publications is particularly useful if a diagram or picture is sought after.

6.2 Bookmarks
Thumbnails are inappropriate when searching for sections of text. For this task bookmarks are
provided. A list of bookmarks for a publications can be viewed by clicking the Bookmark
Button as shown in the diagram below. Clicking a bookmark will take the view of the
publication to that section. (Remember that this can also be achieved directly from the index
screens by selecting the appropriate publication section as described in Section 5.3)

6.3 Return to Index


Click the ‘Return to Index’ button at the top left hand corner of Acrobat Reader (shown in the
diagram above) to return to the ALSTOM T&D Protection & Control Group Product Catalogue.

7.1 General Duty


This list shows general duties listed alphabetically. Click on a duty of interest and the Product
Catalogue fills the Specific Duty list. (see 7.2).

7.2 Specific Duty


This list shows specific duties with their associated Device Refs. Click on a specific duty of
interest to view the list of suitable products (see 7.3). The top item in this however provides
direct access to the Application Guide publication. Simply click this top item followed by the
View button

7.3 Suitable Products


This list shows products in the CD-ROM Catalogue which are particularly suited to the general
and specific duties you have clicked on in 7.1 and 7.2.

7.4 Product Details


As products in the ‘Suitable Products’ list are highlighted their respective details are shown in
this box.

7.5 View Controls


The controls on this panel provide the same functions as their counterparts on the Index
Screens (see Section 5).

7.6 Application Guide Publication


Direct access to the Application Guide publication is available by clicking the top item in the
General Duty List (7.1) and then clicking the View button.

Section 8. Catalogue Setup

8.1 Show Tips


This option lets you choose whether to show the yellow balloon tips. In the index screens if the
cursor is left still over a control for a couple of seconds then a balloon tip appears to advise
what that control does. The tip will disappear again if either the mouse is clicked or moved off
the control. This feature is useful for novice users in order to quickly become familiar with the
system.

8.2 Word Wrap


When this option is turned on the text in the main lists of the index screens is wrapped onto
the next line if it does not fit on a single line.

8.3 Bold Font


This option sets the text in the index forms to bold.

8.4 Default Language


Select a language to change the User Interface to the selected language. Additionally the
publication listing of the Index Screens will load with publications of the selected language.
Publications only available in English will also be displayed in these lists.

For Non-English Languages


On the CD-ROM there are some publications that are a later issue in English than their non-
English equivalent. In such cases the user has the choice of whether to view the current
language publication or the newer English one. This choice can be made by selecting the
following options in the Catalogue Setup:-
1. Always Show French/German/Spanish Publications.
This option will automatically show the current language publication in the Index
Screens regardless of whether a newer issue English publication is available.
2. Always Show English Publication if Newer.
This option will automatically show a newer issue English publication if one is
available.
3. Give Option to Show Newer English Publication.
This option will give the user the option of either displaying the current laguage
publication or the newer issue English publication upon clicking the View button in an
Index Screen.

8.5 Default Page No.


Select a page number to which each publication will be opened by default. The default value
can be overridden manually in all index screens.

8.6 Show User Guide


Clicking the ‘Show User Guide’ button shows a copy of the ALSTOM T&D Protection & Control
Group Product Catalogue User Guide in Acrobat Reader.

8.7 Register
Clicking this button displays the registration form. This form is automatically displayed the first
time the program is run following installation. This button enables the user to produce a
further registration form for return to ALSTOM T&D Protection & Control Limited.

8.9 Contact Addresses


This displays a list of principal worldwide contact addresses for the ALSTOM T&D Protection &
Control Group in Acrobat Reader.

Section 9. Install / Produce Supplement Disk

9.1 Install
Select this option and press Next if you wish to install a supplement disk on to your system.
Read and follow the instructions on the screen.

9.2 Produce
Select this option and press Next if you wish to make a new supplement disk. This function is
password protected. See Section 9.6 ‘Making a Supplement Disk’ for help on what to do next.

9.3 Amend
Select this option and press Next if you wish to amend an existing supplement disk. This
function is password protected. The program will read the contents of your supplement disk so
that you may update it. See Section 9.6 ‘Making a Supplement Disk’ for help on what to do
next.

9.4 Exit
Press this button to return to the Main Screen.

9.5 Next
Press this button to move to the next screen for the option you have selected. Read and follow
the instructions on the screen.

This section describes the steps to take when either amending or making a new supplement
disk.

9.6.1 Supplement Disk Contents List


This list shows the current status of the supplement disk being made/amended. The list shows
the Filename in Column 1. This is the Acrobat (pdf) file which will be copied on to the disk for
this entry in the list. Column 2 shows whether the publication is to update one which is on the
CD-ROM, or to be displayed as a new publication. Column 3 shows the publication number.
Column 4 shows the Product Type, and Column 5 shows the title of the publication.

9.6.2 Notes Box


The notes in this box, and similar boxes during the process should be fully read as they
contain guidelines for each step.

9.6.3 Add to list


Press this button to add a publication into the current list. You will be asked to select the
source file for the publication to add, whether it is to update an existing publication on the
CD-ROM or if it is to be shown as a new publication.

If it is to update an existing publication, you will be asked which publication it is to update


(this will be selected from a list), the language and the updated issue letter.

If it is to be shown as a new publication you will be asked to give the Product Type; Publication
No.; Publication Issue; Publication Title; Publication Language and whether the new
publication is to be listed in the Main Supplements (and therefore have a button with an
appropriate title) or not.

9.6.4 Amend Details
If you wish to change the details of one of the entries in the current supplement disk list,
highlight the entry of interest and click this button. You will be able to change any of its
details.

9.6.5 Delete
If you wish to remove an entry from the list, click this button.

9.6.6 Cancel
Press this button to return to the Main Screen.

9.6.7 Make Disk


When you have established a contents list for the current supplement disk (see 9.6.1), press
this button to make the disk.
