5. The equation shows the reaction between zinc and hydrochloric acid. 6. Draw the apparatus setup to determine by measuring the volume of oxygen gas produced
using hydrogen peroxide and manganese (IV) oxide.
Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2 Answer:

Calculate the mass of zinc required to react with excess hydrochloric acid to produce 6dm3
of hydrogen gas at room conditions. (Relative atomic mass; Zn = 65, Cl = 35.5, 1 mole of gas
occupies 24dm3 at room conditions.
Answer: 16.25g

No of moles of H2 = Volume
number of moles of hydrogen
(Molar volume)

= 0.25 mol H2

2. Relate = Using equation

Use this ratio to find the number of
Zn + HCl → ZnCl2 + H2 moles of substance needed. Tips for drawing the diagram:
1 mol H2 : 1 mol Zn Functional:
0.25 mol H2 : 0.25 mol Zn • Rubber stopper must be higher than the mouth of the conical
flask
3. Solve = Follow the questions and using the appropriate formula. • Level of delivery tube must be lower than the water level
• Dashed lines for solutions
Mass of Zn = Moles of Zn x Molar mass of Zn • Clamp by retort stand.
Final answer
