Daily accounts of trips to Jupiters Casino during his visit in 2016
endeared him to local press looking for something different to write
about but it has been on the course where Varner has been
most impressive.
Just the second African American to play the PGA Tour, Varner
grew up in North Carolina where a $100 membership at a local
public course got him started in the game.
He spent all day every day of his summer school holidays at the
course and over time developed enough game to earn a scholarship
to East Carolina University.
While he doesn’t have the physical presence of a Dustin Johnson
or Brooks Koepka, distance off the tee is one of his strengths and
BUGGY FOR 15 YEARS
in the Graham Marsh redesigned Royal Pines layout he appears to
have found a course that fits his eye.
In two appearances on the Gold Coast his worst finish is
second, an enviable record and one that will no doubt fill him with
confidence as he arrives to defend his only professional title to date.
In his first visit in 2015 he was part of a three-way playoff with
Dylan Frittelli and eventual champion Nathan Holman while last
year an impressive final round 65 saw him to a two-shot victory over
Andrew Dodt.
But there is also a serious side to Varner who is acutely aware
that as a black man he is visibly different to almost all his peers on
the US circuit. YOUTUBE
In August this year the 27-year-old wrote a compelling and well ‘CLICGEAR
thought out piece for the website The Player’s Tribune, where CART 3.5+’
athletes tell their own stories in their own words.
He addressed the race issue and how it was a constant in No.1 Buggy in Golf
America while suggesting that he felt it was less so here
in Australia.
“They (Australian media) saw me as the goofy dude who worked
his ass off to win one of their most prestigious tournaments,”
he wrote, “not someone who could be used to create a
race discussion.”
Perhaps that goes some way to explaining why Varner has
played so well here but irrespective of the reason, the smart money
says he will be part of the discussion come Sunday at Royal Pines.

across the perfect swing yet, and doesn’t think he ever
will. “If we were all built the same, maybe you could find
the perfect swing,” he explains. “As it is, everyone is different and
we all have our own little idiosyncrasies and tendencies. The goal
should always be to find the best swing which works for you.” To
do that, Leadbetter believes the key is to forget one of golf’s biggest
misnomers. “Because we all hold the club with our hands and
arms, everybody assumes that’s what controls the swing,” says
the former coach of Nick Faldo and Nick Price. “Yes, your hands
are important, but the power and energy comes from your body.
One of my favourite expressions in golf instruction is that the dog
(the body) has to wag the tail (the hands, arms and club); the tail
does not wag the dog. To get everything working in the correct
manner, you need to break the swing down into three aspects. The
first component is the way you set up to the ball. That includes
your grip, posture, ball position and alignment. The second
component is the sequence of motion and how the body would
move if you didn’t have any arms. And the third component is the
synchronisation between the hands, arms and body. If you can nail
these basics, it will be far easier to hit the ball consistently. Here’s
how you do it...

YOUR BIGGEST QUESTIONS ANSWERED!
When should I
switch to stiff shafts?
“The basic answer is that a change in clubhead speed of approximately
10 to 15mph is the equivalent to one full flex in difference,” reveals
golf equipment expert Tom Wishon. But before you decide this has
happened and buy the first stiff shaft that appears on a Google search,
Wishon implores that you read the following. “One thing you need to
understand before you even contemplate swapping shafts is that
there is no set standard for how stiff any of the letter flexes
on shafts are,” he says. “This means one brand’s stiff
shafts could have the same or even more flex than
another company’s regular flex. The only true
way to find out which shaft is right for you
is to work with a professional custom
fitter who has a wide depth of
knowledge and experience.”

We’ve all done it. You find a good lie around the green, so you puff your chest

playing partner to “just take the flag out”. It is a bold move, and according to
NASA scientist turned short game guru, Dave Pelz, it is also the wrong one.
“If you are chipping from just off the green, you really want to leave the pin

both methods and my research revealed that, because a collision with the pin
absorbs some of the ball’s energy, you make 35 per cent more chip shots if you
leave the pin in. The only exceptions to this rule are when the pin is moving in
the wind or leaning towards you due to the cup being damaged.”
