DREAMS
1. Usually occurs during sleep periods.
2. It appears about 65 times in the Old Testament.
a) The most significant use of this word, however, is with reference to
prophetic “dreams” and/or “visions.”
b) Both true and false prophets claimed to communicate with God by
these dreams and visions.
c) True and false prophets could have dreams; the only difference is true
prophet’s dreams were expected to come true and a proclaimed
dream not coming to pass could lead to loss of life for the proclaiming
prophet (Deut. 18)
Deuteronomy 13:1
“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a
wonder, ….
d) Not only prophets in the Bible had dreams but the dreams recorded
were GOD speaking.
e) First recorded dream was Abimelech in Gen. 20:3 when GOD told him
to give back Abrahams wife. So, GOD can give instructions/warnings
to even unbelievers through dreams.
Genesis 20:3
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are
a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's wife.”

3. It Appears several times in the New Testament (Matthew, Acts, Jude 1:8)
a) In Acts 2 the Apostle Peter helps us understand that the prophecy given
by the Prophet Joel (Joel 2) is coming to pass in our times, in the times of
THE HOLY SPIRIT. He is telling us that dreams a valid means of hearing
from GOD just as well as visions are because GOD had promised this to
HIS people.
Acts 2:17
“‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and
daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream
dreams.
b) Jude uses it to describe non-Christians, they use their dreams and the
interpretation for excuses to do all sorts of things. Hence interpretation
is very important.
c) Before the coming of THE HOLY SPIRIT to the world, only prophets had
the Word of GOD, but after HE came with Power, HE equipped every
single child of GOD with the ability to hear GOD for themselves and not
"need" a prophet to bring them the Word of GOD.
Hebrews 1:1-2
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the
prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son ...

4. Dreams are not visions or trances. They are not flashes either, they only take
place when a person is asleep. Daydreaming does not count. The idea of a dream
is that you have no involvement at all, your mind is a watcher so you don't
usually control it.

5. Dreams are sometimes called Visions of the night.

a) A vision of the night could also be a vision you see when you are very
sleepy, not entirely asleep but just at the end then THE LORD gives you
HIS message.
b) Mostly used Visions of the Night in the New Testament. Paul had a lot of
them.
PURPOSE OF DREAMS
1. Many worries
Ecclesiastes 5:3
A dream comes when there are many cares, …
a) Some dreams are from the cares and worries you have on your mind,
some come from the pizza you ate.
2. Primary instruction/Information.
Job 33:14-18
For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it.
In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber
on their beds, then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings, that
he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man; he keeps back
his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword.
a) Some dreams are direct
b) Some dreams need interpretation
c) Some dreams you remember
d) Some dreams I don't believe you need to remember, I believe THE
LORD buries them in you for a later season or uses them as
subconscious instructions. Later you have de ja vu situations or
remember something vaguely, wiser, etc.
DREAM INTERPRETATION – THE FULL WISDOM OF GOD
The Wisdom of GOD is all encompassing, seeing a vision, having a dream or a Word
is not the end of the world. It is just the beginning of the journey.
Proverbs 3:19-20
The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the
heavens; by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the
dew.

Proverbs 24:3-4
By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge
the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

So, the full wisdom of GOD can be broken into 3. We'll use Pharaoh's dream and
Joseph's interpretation as an example:
1. Revelation/Wisdom: the dream, vision, Word that was given. Sometimes it is
very direct and other times it is very vague.
In Acts 16, Paul saw a man from Macedonia calling him; In Genesis 20,
Abimelech had a real-life conversation with GOD. No need for any
interpretation.
In Genesis 41, when Pharaoh had his dream they were extremely unclear and
the Wisdom of GOD was required to bring revelation. It was so tough even the
devil couldn't decipher!
2. Interpretation/Understanding: the dream gets an interpretation here and it can
be extremely clear if you can get the full revelation. Joseph told Pharaoh the
entire mind of GOD and it was so clear and resonated with the king. Daniel too
interpreted a dream for Nebuchadnezzar.
3. Action/Knowledge: it is one thing to know the interpretation of your dream,
but what would you do with it? So, you know there will 7 good years followed
by 7 bad years, what do you do? Do you pray for 7 bad years to be erased? Do
you build barns and store up wheat? What do you do? That is where knowledge
comes in, the application of the interpreted wisdom.
Of course, sometimes you file it away in your heart like Mary did with hers but the
filing away was more like preparation for what was coming. There must always be
an action, even if it is deliberate filing away.
DREAM INTERPRETATION- FINDING INTERPRETATION
1. GOD gives the Wisdom, Interpretation and the Action. It is all in HIS Hand and
you can seek HIM for it. HE gives all who ask. James 1:5-8, Daniel 2.
2. Culture: some cultures have some basic interpretations. Yoruba people believe
if someone gives you a house in a dream that means you will never buy a house.
This is not always the case, GOD gives Wisdom not culture. The devil has invaded
culture and even JESUS condemns it. Matthew 15.
3. Books/Google: recommended to go to GOD but if you find strong spiritual
Christians you know you can use their material. All revelation comes from GOD,
nothing is set in stone.
4. Counsellors: strong spiritual counsellors can be used but again GOD is speaking
to YOU.
5. Mediums/astrology: these have no place in the life a Christian, the kings that
did this in the Bible died (Saul in Samuel 28, Ahaziah in 2 Kings 1).
