Theoretical Framework

Vygotsky’s Social Interaction Theory

Lev Vygostky believed that social interaction does more than transmit ideas. In

his view, people provide guidance and support for children as they attempt new and

more complicated tasks. People are the essence of Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal

Development concept.

The Zone of Proximal Development refers to an area in which an individual has a

trouble solving a problem alone but can succeed with help from someone more

knowledgeable. If a cognitive development proceeds gradually, it makes sense that at

any given time, a student is on the verge of a cognitive “breakthrough”. We can think of

a student’s zone of proximal students, therefore, as the area of potential breakthrough.

Vygotsky suggested that students should be pushed to the edge of their

capabilities, but that someone should be there to help and encourage them. Although

the teacher is the most obvious candidate in the classroom, he or she is not the only

person who can encourage breakthroughs. Another students who has recently made

the same breakthrough might be the one who can most effectively communicate the

necessary knowledge. Vygotsky’s theory of Zone of Proximal Development suggests a

more aggressive approach than Piaget’s notion of social interaction. The difference

between guided discovery and pure discover. (Child & Adolescent Dev.)
