FORM 4
Chapter 1: Functions
1.4: Inverse Functions

If 𝑓: 𝑥 → 𝑦 is a function that maps x onto y, its inverse function is denoted by 𝒇−𝟏 .

Inverse function is a function that maps y back to x.
The condition for the existence of inverse functions is that the function must be one – to – one

Example 17: Find the inverse function for each of the following functions

1) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 2, find 𝑓 −1 2) 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 5, find 𝑓 −1 3)

1
𝑓(𝑥) = 2 𝑥 − 3, find 𝑓 −1
and 𝑓 −1 (5) and 𝑓 −1 (1) and 𝑓 −1 (2)

4) 𝑔(𝑥) = 4𝑥 + 1, find 𝑔−1 5) 𝑔(𝑥) = 3 − 2𝑥, find 𝑔−1 6) 1

𝑔(𝑥) = 1 + 2 𝑥, find 𝑔−1
and 𝑔−1 (5) and 𝑔−1 (−1) and 𝑔−1 (4)
𝑥+8 2𝑥−1
7) ℎ(𝑥) = 𝑥−6, find ℎ−1 8) ℎ(𝑥) = , find ℎ−1 9) ℎ(𝑥) = √2 − 𝑥, find ℎ−1
𝑥+2
and ℎ−1 (2) and ℎ−1 (1) and ℎ−1 (−2)

Example 18: Solve for p and q

1) 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 + 𝑞, 2) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑝𝑥 + 𝑞, 3) 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑝𝑥 − 18,

𝑓 −1 (𝑥) = 𝑝𝑥 + 2 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 6 𝑔−1 (𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 𝑞
