Year 3 Chemical Science

ACSSU046 A change of state between solid and liquid can be caused by adding or
removing heat.
o Investigating how liquids and solids respond to changes in temperature.
o Exploring how changes from solid to liquid and liquid to solid.

Explore Lesson: The effect of adding heat to different objects. Provide hands on
experience of the phenomenon.

Safety:
o iPad Contract
o Clothing: Goggles, gloves
o All hair should be tied back
o Distance: Keep a safe distance from the source of heat (ask teacher)
o Food: Do NOT eat any of the materials, if you have allergies tell the teacher
o Tell teacher immediately if an injury, spill or other accidents occur
o Behavioural Maturity of Students
o Table area is clear with no heat combustible materials around
o Table should be heat protected
o Have a fire blanket or fire extinguisher at easy access

Introduction:

At the beginning of the lesson, an ice block will be placed at the front of the class. Students will
observe it’s state and predict what they think will happen to by the end of the lesson. At the end of
the lesson, students will see if their predictions were right, and observe the state the ice block is now
in.

*Students will use iPads to record the before, during and after effects of adding heat to
chocolate/wax/crayons.

Rotation 1: Chocolate

Equipment:
o Chocolate Chips
o Plastic Zip Lock Bags

Steps:
1. Students will each receive a mini zip lock bag with a few chocolate chips inside of each.
Discuss:
o What state is the chocolate currently in?
o What do you think will happen to the chocolate when heat is applied?
o What type of heat could you use to melt the chocolate?
2. Students will use their body heat to melt the chocolate. Discuss:
What happened to the chocolate when we used our body heat?
o What state is in the chocolate in now?
o Do you think we could change the chocolate back to its original state? If so, how?
o Do you think this is the best way to melt the chocolate? Are there any other ways we could
melt the chocolate?
Rotation 2: Recycling old crayons to make new ones

Equipment:
o Old Crayons.
o Silicone molds or Metal cup cake tins.
o Glass bowl, heat proof dishes.
o Microwave, oven, double boiler or heat torch.
o Oven glove.
o Spatula.

Steps:
1. Peel paper off all of the crayons.
2. Break crayons into small pieces and or sharpen them to get crayon shavings.
3. Place broken/shaved crayons in silicone molds.
4. Place in oven on 180 for 10/15 minutes.
o If no oven available place crayons in microwave safe dish, microwave on high for 5
minutes.
5. Once crayons are liquid, pour into the molds.
o Double boiler is also an option, as well as heat torch. Place molds in refrigerator to set
quickly or leave on bench until solid.
5. Pop the crayons out of the molds.
*Use a number of different crayon colours for more interesting patterns

Rotation 3: Candle Wax

Equipment:
o Tea light candles
o Aluminum Foil
o Matches

Steps:
1. Place aluminum foil on the desk/working space.
2. Take the cut in half tea light candle out of its base.
3. Place the candle on its side onto the aluminum foil.
4. Light the candle with a match or lighter.

*Once the candle has melted, watch the wax solidify.
