AUSTRALIAN CULTURE

1. Linguistic aspects
The dominant language since colonization has been English, however, aboriginal languages
and languages of other (for another) countries are also spoken.
English from Australia: It has British influences but also of aboriginal and immigrant
languages.
Aboriginal languages: Before the European invasion there were around 250 (two hundred
fifty) Aboriginal languages. Perhaps ninety of these languages are still spoken, with around
twenty being spoken fluently by indigenous children.
Languages of other countries: Due to the high number of immigrants from several
countries, several languages are spoken (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Italian, Greek and
Portuguese).

2. Museums and Art Galleries

Art reflects the mixture of diverse cultural currents that converge in this country, mixing
new influences with old traditions. Australia has a vibrant artistic and cultural scene, with
several museums, art galleries and cultural institutions. (As they are:)
Sydney Opera House: It is one of the most important places for musical and artistic shows.
It has five theaters inside and two main rooms.
National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne): It is the oldest and largest art gallery in
Australia, open to the general public.
Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art: the two galleries are architectural
wonders and present a diversity of Australian and international art, as well as two galleries
dedicated to contemporary indigenous work.
National Museum of Australia (Canberra): The museum preserves and interprets
Australia's social history, exploring the key issues, people and events that have shaped the
nation.

3. Kakadu national park

It has one of the areas with the highest concentration of cave paintings in the world. Here
there are 5,000 (five thousand) aboriginal sites, among which are cave paintings, shelters,
stone tools, grinders and ocher-colored ceremonial objects. These detailed records of life in
Kakadu go back more than 50,000 (fifty thousand) years, from the first testimony of human
occupation to the arrival of Europeans.

¿How did they determine the age of the paintings? The age was determined by observing
the depiction of extinct animals, the presence of used ochre pieces dating back 50,000 years
and presence of silica coatings that forms over thousands of years in arid conditions.
