IMPACTING LIVES...

A message from Mark Frisone the Executive Director

“Give to people with a philosophy of abundance, not scarcity.” - Sister Jordan

Haddad, O.P.
Sister Jordan’s words continue to ring true, even as the economy faces a downward spiral. As founder of the hot
meal & pantry programs of the Center of Hope & Kent Social Services, the agency continues to feel guided by both
her legacy and words of faith. With the support of the community, Family & Community Services, Inc. continued it’s
mission of impacting the lives of over 70,000 adults and children in a time of increasing needs and diminishing resources.
Armed with a single dollar and a leap of faith, Family & Community Services, Inc. bought the former Ohio Department of
Transportation’s District Office Complex and converted this blighted “hole in the middle of our city” into a thriving one-stop
shop for services. In a year‘s time, collaborative agreements with the City of Ravenna, Ravenna City Schools and other
community partners led to a 90% occupancy rate for a site that would be renamed the Resources on Oakwood Campus
(The R.O.C.). During this same time period, Freedom House broke ground and built a new, larger handicap accessible
facility for homeless veterans through the support of a federal Veteran’s Administration grant and numerous community
donors. To address the needs and gaps in transportation for many of our clients, the agency welcomed Emerald
Transportation as it’s newest program of the fiscal year. To address the rising issue & root causes of poverty, the
agency is facilitating the “Bridges Out of Poverty” model in Portage County. Key concepts involve understanding poverty
through a class perspective and engaging all levels of the community to seek local solutions to poverty. Thanks to the
support of our funders, contributors, over 3,000 volunteers providing 326,665 volunteer hours and $4,448,337 of in-kind
donations it was a year of abundant giving to continue to serve the growing community needs.
