Should Euthanasia Be Legalized?

Hello, everyone! Good afternoon. I have a story about my patients. They died because of their
family. Sounds shocking but it happens. Their family put off the ventilator that actually supports
their life. Two of my patient are Mr. X, 22 years old, diagnosed Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).
Its condition needs a ventilator to support his life. The second one, Angel, new baby born,
diagnosed with asphyxia. She also supported by a ventilator. Since their family didn't have
enough money, the treatment was stopped. We call their family to put off the ventilator because
they didn't have enough money. What do you feel when you have to make a decision for
someone to end their life? What do you feel when you have to stop the ventilator that supports
someone life? and what do you feel when you see those conditions are happening in your life for
a certain time? Angry, sad, disappointed are the feeling that I feel. It is a very hard part that I
have to do. Why is it happen? In Indonesia, euthanasia is illegal. I believe that euthanasia should
be legalized because three reasons: first; euthanasia is a right, second, euthanasia is a moral right,
and the last is euthanasia saves lives.

First, everyone has a right. Isn't it? Right for life, for higher education, for a work, and so on.
How about the right for dying? I do believe that everyone has it. To rest in peace with without no
pain. Do you agree with me? Okay, if you don't agree, how you describe life without death. Like
black and white or two sides of a coin, human life can't occur without death. Therefore for you
that argue that everyone only has the fundamental right to live, you unknowingly also agree that
everyone has the fundamental right to die.

Second, are you sure that euthanasia is immoral? Which one is more immoral? When you push
someone in terminal condition to do their treatment, on the other hand, they feel really painful.
Which one is more immoral? when you have to put off the ventilator that supports the life of the
patient. Which one is more immoral? When you are a nurse saw that situation and you can't do
anything. Or, we prepare someone to die in peaceful conditions. Which one is more immoral?

The last but not the list. Euthanasia saves lives. Sound shocking, isn't it? From the case of Mr. X,
How much money should be spent? Almost a billion rupiah for 90 days cares in intensive care
unit (ICU). Perhaps Mr. X has brothers and sisters that need money for their education, his father
or his mom that should have medical check up. Okay, perhaps you will answer it. "we have
BPJS". But, unfortunately, in line with Metro news.com, more than 86 million people don't have
BPJS. For your information for a day Mr. X treatments whiches 10 million rupiahs, we can use it
for a week treatment of 2 patients with diarrhea, or a week treatment of 2 patients with upper
track pulmonary infection, or a week treatment of dengue fever, or operation for who breaks their
arm or leg.

Some people believe that euthanasia is the way to kill someone. I disagree with it. To be honest
that those who believes in that way is conservative. Euthanasia is not as simple as giving
someone a candy. The doctor will do some assessment in patient and family who wants to do
euthanasia. The doctor will predict their life, how long the body will survive, how far the disease
spread, and the effectiveness of the treatment. The nurse will accompany the family and the
patient until the day come. And they also accompany by the religious leader to prepare the day. It
is a holistic treatment, and it is no simple as that you imagine.

Those are three reasons for you that disagree with euthanasia. Euthanasia is a right, euthanasia is
a moral right, and euthanasia saves lives. Thank you so much for your attention. Dead is just
another big journey and remember that dying is not a crime. See you in another meeting.
