Inspection Measuring Testing

Equipment Calibration
QA/QC DEPARTMENT
General
• This specification covers the general requirements for
the procedure of instruments’ calibrations which are
carried out prior to the installation at the jobsite.
• Most field instruments shall be calibrated in
accordance with this procedure except for level gauges
and safety relief valves.

IMTE
General

• Basically, the Company and/or the Contractor’s

inspectors shall witness the test/calibration. SC
shall notify test/calibration items one (1) day
advance for witness.
NOTE: This shall be done utilizing the
“Application For Inspection” form.
• SC shall provide the necessary calibration
equipment & tools including adaptors, coupling,
plugs, tube & fittings, blind flange with NPT
connector and etc.

IMTE
General
• Instruments to be used for calibration shall have a
valid calibration certificate issued not earlier than
12 months prior to use. The certification shall be
issued by a national recognized testing authority or
local authority.
• The test equipment to be used for checking shall
have at least twice better accuracy than the
instruments to be tested in general. However, in
case the instrument has more precise accuracy.
E.g. +/- 0.1% full scale, the test equipment with
better or equal accuracy to the instrument to be
tested can be used.

IMTE
General
• All calibrations shall be recorded in “Pre-Commissioning
Test Sheets. These records shall be prepared & filled by
SC & to be submitted to the Contractor for the
verification & approval. ( The name of witness inspector
& the results of calibration shall also be recorded in the
form.)
• The original calibration records will be returned to SC for
safe keeping after signing/approval, if required, of the
Company. Upon mechanical completion (when activity is
changed from construction to pre-commissioning phase),
a complete set of original “Instrument Calibration
Record” shall be compiled for each subsystem in one file
by SC & it shall be handed over to the Company through
the Contractor.

IMTE
Calibration Notes
• Any adjustments for instruments shall be in
accordance with the mfgr’s instruction manuals
• Visual checks shall be performed on all instruments,
before starting the procedure, to ensure that they are
not damaged or incorrectly assembled.
• Each instrument nameplate shall be checked with
latest issue of project specifications and/or Vendor’s
specifications to confirm correct tagging, range,
accessories, functions, etc.

IMTE
Calibration Notes
• All support & stuffing for shipping shall be removed from
the instruments before starting the test procedure.
• Adequate warm-up to be taken as specified by
manufacturer for electronic instruments before
conducting the functional test.
• Upon completion of the bench test, all connections &
entries shall be sealed to prevent subsequent ingress of
moisture & dirt.
• If water is used at the bench test, inside of the
instrument shall be blown our using instrument air after
completion of the test.

IMTE
Calibration Notes

• Upon completion of each check & test stage, the

following marking shall be made on individual
instrument to identify the completion:

Bench test/field calibration- a white tag shall be

wired or a white tape shall be labeled.
Loop test-a red tag shall be wired or red tape shall be
labeled.
Sequence test-a yellow tag shall be wired or a yellow
tape shall be labeled.

IMTE
Calibration Notes
-continued-
• The following instruments ARE NOT subject to
performing bench calibration:
• Primary elements (orifice plates, prefabricated meter run,
segmental wedge flow, thermo-well, etc.)
• Gauges ( for pressure & temperature)
• Flow Meters (i.e., variable area flow, turbine/P.D type,
thermal type, ultrasonic type, coriolis type, electro
magnetic type, etc.)
• Self-operated valves (i.e., regulator, back pressure
control valve, etc.)

IMTE
Bench Test/Calibration Procedure
• Orifice plate, prefabricated meter run, segmental
wedge flow, no calibration req’d. Visual check.
• Thermo-well, no calib. req’d. Visual check
• Gauges (pressure, draft, thermometer, level- no calib.
req’d. Visual check
• EL. Pressure transmitter- calib. req’d.
• PN pressure transmitter (static pressure & differential
pressure) calib. req’d.
• Pressure Switch (static pressure & differential
pressure), calib. req’d.

IMTE
Bench Test/Calibration Procedure

• Pneumatic Indicating Controller, calib. req”d.

• Pneumatic Receiving Indicator, no calib. req’d.
• Electric Receiving Indicator, calib. req’d.
• Flow meters (i.e., variable area flow, turbine/P.D. type,
thermal type, ultrasonic type, micromotion type,
electromagnetic type, etc.) no calib. req’d.
• Level Meter (i.e., ultrasonic, microwave, sound,
capacitance, radioactive type, etc.), no calib. req’d.

IMTE
Bench Test/Calibration Procedure
• Temperature Element & transmitter, calib. req’d.
• I / P Converter, calib. req’d.
• Control Valve & Accessories, calib. req’d.
• On-Off Valves (Pneumatic/hydraulic operated valves),
calib. req’d.
• Self Operating Control Valves (i.e., pressure
regulator, back pressure control valve) calib. req’d.
• Motor Operated Valves (MOV), no calib. By
instrument section. It shall be done by the electrical
section

IMTE
Field Test/Calibration Procedure
• The following instruments shall be calibrated after
installation in field filling with water in the chamber.
However, in case of performing the field calibration is
impossible due to schedule, layout, characteristic, etc.,
they could be calibrated at the workshop.
*Displacement type level instruments
*Level switches.

IMTE
Special Instrument Calibration
• Where required, the calibration for the following
special instrument/instrument systems shall be
conducted under the Vendor’s instructions; Analyzers

• Other special instruments, such as radioactive level

instruments, vibration / axial displacement /
accelerometers, and etc.

IMTE
Instruments Within Packaged
Equipment/System
• Local panels- the function of local panels within
packaged system (i.e., rotary machine, boiler, etc.)
shall be checked as a part of the loop/sequence test
which is basically conducted by the packaged vendor’s
specialist.
• Field instruments- Field instruments that will be
shipped loose shall be calibrated prior to installation.
The same procedure & test/calibration report as
described above shall be applied.
• Field instruments that have been pre-
assembled/installed within packaged equipment shall
be calibrated without removing. The same procedure &
test/calibration report as described above shall be
applied.
