Key Performance Indicators for Gas Distribution Network System

Every organization or business unit has some Key Performance Indicators which reflects their overall
performance or help them to steer at correct direction in which an organization can perform as per
the charter it has earned and up to the satisfaction of its stake holders. The major KPI are as below;

1. Safety Performance
2. Network Utilization
3. Un accounted for Gas
4. Customer Satisfaction
5. Financial Performance
6. Environmental Performance

A. Safety Performance: To operate safe is the prime objective of any processing industry. In the
Gas Distribution Operations as per the USA Transportation Safety Board the safety performance
are related to following;
a. Numbers of Safety violations observed over a period
b. Numbers of near miss incidents over a period
c. Numbers of Injuries/ fatalities over a period
d. Numbers, Nature and cost occurred due to safety related incident
e. Numbers of work hour lost due to safety related incident over a period

B. Network Utilization: The Network Utilization is the ratio of designed capacity of gas distribution
network against number of customer and sales in volume following are the network
performance indicators;
a. Percentile of Total Sales vs. Total Designed Capacity
b. Total Customer exists per length of laid pipeline network
c. Percentile of Constraint Demand Vs. Designed Capacity
d. Percentile of Un-Constraint Demand Vs. Designed Capacity
e. Percentile of Total Availability of Gas for Sale Vs. Designed Capacity
f. Average work person available per length of pipeline network

C. Un-Accounted for Gas: It is often relates to operational performance indicator. The indicators in
this category are listed below;
a. Percentile ratio of Gas Sales over Gas Purchased for over all pipeline network
b. Total leaks eliminated/ repaired in over a period
c. Hazardous Leak eliminated/ repaired in over a period
d. Excavation damage per length excavation allowed
e. Nature and Number of leaks by cause in over a period
f. Nature and Number of Leaks by cause per length of pipeline network
D. Customer Satisfaction: The customer satisfaction performance indicator is one of most
important factor assessing the business relationship with the customers effecting the
profitability and image of the organization. The performance indicators in this category are as
bellow;
a. Nature and Number of complaints received,
b. Nature and Number of complaint rectification method in a period
c. Number of factious complaints by customer in a period
d. Percentile mode of communication customer used to launch complaints
e. Customer turn over in a period
f. Average work person available per customer.

E. Financial Performance: These performance indicators reflects the profitability and financial
performance of an organization or business unit. The key important indicators are;
a. Profit and loss statement
b. Budgetary Vs. Actual Expenses
c. Inventory Utilization
d. Cost of Operation Trend Analysis
e. Gas Supply & Demand Analysis

F. Environmental Performance: The environmental performance indicators are used to monitor

the impact on environment by a business on its locality. Following are the basic Environmental
relating KPI in practice;
a. Amount of Methane vent due to technical and non-technical reasons in atmosphere
b. Amount of Methane released due to underground leakage/ activity
c. Amount of methane released due to above ground leakage/ activity
d. Equivalent tCO2 of Methane releases in atmosphere due to leakage
e. Equivalent tCO2 of Methane releases in atmosphere due to accidental leakage
f. Mitigation cost to control Methane venting in atmosphere per tCO2 equivalent
g. Average Methane Consumption by Customer
h. Health related issues observed in the vicinity of plant or pipeline network emitting
Methane.
i. Disposition of spent chemical (all type) in terms of volume & weight, which ever
applicable.
