‘Social innovation startup’ is the term we use in Underdogs programme for our
target group—it includes not only social enterprises and social ventures, but also
startups who may be able to create social impact through their businesses. We
work with them to identify their potential social values at early stages and this is
important to us as we do not want to narrow down the ‘potential of a new business’.
We provide incubating program for early-stage social ventures and teams with
innovative ideas focusing on the practical skills and performance, which positions us
as the most intensive and professional business incubator. We also position
ourselves as a company builder, since we support and ‘co-build’ the business and
team we have identified throughout the challenging cycle of starting up a socially
impactful business. Up to 2018, we have worked with over 5,000 future
entrepreneurs, who also form over 200 teams with many of them working in social
innovation sector. 27 teams have successfully launched their own businesses.
We work closely with our local and international partners in building a trusted
network of our program alumni, business mentors and coaches to provide as much
opportunity as possible. We also connect and cooperate with partners in both
private and public sector, as well as other intermediaries and incubators to create
maximum impact and expand the culture of social innovation.
What We Do
For the past three years, we have developed a set of effective incubation program
modules for various target groups. We strongly believe these programs have been
effective and impactful because we carry our own experience of incubating social
ventures in the Underdogs Group. We have watched and walked along with them
emerging from a single idea into a real profit making business, and this unique
hands-on experience provides us with insights and wisdom on identifying the
potential business idea and supporting them to grow. As the result, together with
our commitment in providing these supports to wider group, we apply every
knowledge and skills we have to every incubation program we design and deliver.
Our standard incubation program, which usually runs 6-8 weeks on full time basis,
can also be customized based on the specific needs and requirement of the target
group, partners and clients. In any case, we always design our program with a
strong focus on the balanced combination of theory and practice, effective team
building(for sustainability of business), and overall performance.
Context
Our value and approaches to social venture incubation have been recognized by our
Korean audience only recently. However, we are growing very fast, and we have
partners and clients more than we can handle hoping to work with us. We thought
this meant something—that there is perhaps more people who will appreciate and
agree with what we do and how we do things, not only in Korea, but also beyond.
We also started small projects with other Asian countries. We have had three study
visits from our partners in Hong Kong with a theme of ‘Social enterprises in Seoul’,
and a business training workshop in Indonesia. Our team constantly interacts from
people from other countries who are interested in this area, and the conversation
usually ends with ‘Let’s do something together!’
While there are many networks for social economies, social innovation, and social
enterprises already in place and well-settled, we also find it challenging to be
connected with other social innovation company builders, incubators and
accelerators across Asia. We have not yet come across any particular opportunity
for organizations and companies such as ourselves to sit down together and have an
in-depth discussion. Also, we believe there is much to learn from our experiences
as ‘intermediaries’ in the growing economy.
In this context, we would like to invite you to come to Seoul and participate in
2018 Asia Tomorrow – From Seoul and Beyond,
taking place in Seoul from September 10 -14, 2018.
We would really like to meet, share, and discuss with you on the visions and
challenges, and brainstorm ideas for our future role in the society. We are also
excited to initiate any new collaborative project ideas and programmes developed
from this opportunity!
