Hazard and resource maps as tools in the dev’t of DRRM plans

Deputy Administrator for Administration - Office of the Civil Defense Assistant Secretary
Kristoffer James Purisima encouraged local government units (LGUs) to maximize the full
potential of hazard and resource maps in coming up with comprehensive disaster risk
reduction and management (DRRM) plans.

“The hazard and resource maps that we

have here today are indispensable tools that
will aid local governments and various
stakeholders and land use planning in the
development of disaster preparedness plans,
among others. These will be solid references
in the selection of evacuation centers, safe
roofs, and other risk management concerns,”
emphasized Asec. Purisima.

To note, a total of 482 printed maps were

distributed among provincial and municipal
offices in the region. The maps turn over
ceremony was part of the Philippine Light
Intensity Detection and Ranging (Phil LiDAR)
Program implemented in collaboration with
state universities and higher education
institutions and the Department of Science
and Technology (DOST).

He expressed that these maps “are critical in

shepherding our integration into the Sendai
Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction in
terms of populating our initiatives within the
pillars of prevention and mitigation,
preparedness, response and rehabilitation
National Economic Development Authority and recovery.”

Citing collaborative efforts orchestrated in pursuit of greater plans and goals, Asec. Purisima
disclosed that the data are instrumental in identifying resources which LGUs may take
advantage of at the most basic level of governance for the entire scale of disaster
management.

University of the Philippines – Cebu (UPC) Phil LiDAR 1 Project Leader Dr. Jonnifer
Sinogaya vowed to assist and capacitate LGUs in the application of these maps.

With the skillful use of these tools, LGUs are expected to improve the level of preparedness
and effective response so as to empower the communities to be safe and resilient.
