Application of Board Replacement

Description Replacement of boards and parts is usually applied in the
following situations.
„ Equipment maintenance
Replacement of boards and parts is a routine task performed
by the maintenance personnel. The personnel can locate the
fault with the aid of alarms or other maintenance information.
If the board or part already backed out of services, they can
be directly replaced.
„ Hardware upgrade
When a board acquires new functions, the hardware needs to
be upgraded, such as chip replacement. In these situations,
loading/unloading and restoration of operation need to be
performed.
„ Equipment expansion
When expanding the equipment, replacement or
loading/unloading of some boards may be necessary.

Procedure to Replace
Boards
Description To ensure that ZXMBW AGW is able to provide services to the
subscribers non-stop, board replacement is conducted power-on
in most cases. Therefore, to ensure the running security of
equipment, and to reduce the impact of part replacement on
system functions to the minimum, the maintenance personnel
need to strictly observe the fundamental procedure described in
this manual when replacing parts, as shown in Figure 1.

Overview of Part Replacement

FIGURE 1 BASIC OPERATION FLOW TO REPLACE COMPONENTS

Confirming Feasibility of Operation

Description During the process of fault disposition and equipment inspection,
the maintenance personnel need to assess the feasibility of the
operation before deciding to replace a certain part.
„ If there is backup available in storage for the part to be
replaced. If the carrier does not have replacement in storage,
the maintenance personnel should contact the local ZTE
representatives.
„ If the maintenance personnel possess the capacity to
perform the current operation. Part replacement can only be
carried out by certified maintenance personnel. That is, the
personnel need the following qualifications: familiarity with
the functions of various boards, knowledge of the basic
procedure of board replacement, mastery of basic skills of
board replacement.
„ If the risk of the current operation is within control. Board
replacement is an operation with a certain amount of risk.
Before performing board replacement, the maintenance
personnel need to conduct a comprehensive assessment of
the risk of the current operation. That is, assess if it is
possible to control the risk without powering off through

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION 3

ZXMBW AGW WiMAX Wireless Access Gateway Component Replacement Guide

certain technical protection measures. Only under the

situation that the risk can be controlled can the maintenance
personnel perform the replacement, otherwise, contact the
local ZTE representatives for swift technical support.

Preparing Spares and Tools

Description After confirming that the current replacement is feasible, the
personnel need to prepare the replacement part and tools.
„ The carrier should keep a certain amount of replacement
parts in storage, and return faulty boards timely for repair.
Ensure that there are sufficient replacements for major
boards (such as OMP, SMP and UIM)
„ Commonly used tools include: multi meter, anti-static wrist
band, Philips screw driver, flat screw driver, pincers, diagonal
pliers, and pliers.

Take Technical Protective Measures

Description Though part replacement carries a certain amount of risk, under
most situations, the maintenance personnel can avoid the risk
by taking specific technical protection measures. For instance,
when replacing the active board working in the active/standby
mode, the personnel can move the services carried by the active
board to the standby board first. The active board can be
replaced after the previous standby board runs properly, in this
way the jeopardy on services incurred by replacing boards can
be avoided.
NOTE: to ensure the secure running of equipment, and to
reduce the impact of part replacement on system functions to
the minimum, the operation personnel need to take certain
technical protection measures before replacing parts. Refer to
the following chapters in this manual for details.

Replace Components
Description After the relevant measures of technical protection are
confirmed to be in place, the personnel can follow the operation
procedure as described in this manual to replace the parts, such
as loading/unloading boards, and setting the DIP switches of
boards.

Overview of Part Replacement

Verify the Function of New

Components
Description After the maintenance personnel complete the replacement of
parts, they need to test the functions of new parts with the
inspection and test methods provided by this manual.

Repair Faulty Board

Description For parts with confirmed faults after being replaced, the
maintenance personnel should contact the local ZTE
representatives in time and send the faulty boards to ZTE for
replacement, so as to ensure that the backup boards in storage
are up to replenishment needs.

Cautions
Anti-static
Description As ZXMBW AGW carries a large amount of electronic parts and
PCBs, anti-static measures need to be taken during the entire
process of manufacturing, commissioning, transportation, and
storage. The main issues are as follows.
„ The maintenance personnel need to use specific anti-static
bags and boxes in the transportation and storage of boards,
to ensure the anti-static security.
„ In the process of carrying and loading/unloading boards, the
maintenance personnel need to wear anti-static wrist bands
that are properly grounded, and the grounding connector
should be plugged into the ESD (Electronic Discharge) hole.
„ The anti-static wrist band is not able to prevent the statics
caused by contact between clothes and the board; therefore,
the maintenance personnel should avoid contact between
clothes and the board during operations.
„ When the anti-static wrist band is under the normal working
state, its impedance should be between 1 and 10 Ohms
„ In the process of replacement, the maintenance personnel
should place all parts to be installed in the anti-static bag,
and place the temporarily unloaded parts on anti-static
foams.

ZXMBW AGW WiMAX Wireless Access Gateway Component Replacement Guide

Security Cautions
Description In the process of board replacement, physical operations by the
maintenance personnel in the foreground are necessary.
Therefore, personal securities need to be taken care of to avoid
accidents. Pay attention to the following issues.
„ The foreground uses -48V DC power. In the process of board
replacement, open the rear door with hot line work, be
careful of using the pliers, screwdrivers, and pincers in the
back of the shelf to avoid electric shock.
„ When replacing boards in high altitudes, use caution to avoid
falling over.
„ After unloading the board, do not direct contact with the
board, to avoid burns or scratches by components on the
board.
„ When boards of power supply need to be replaced, power
maintenance personnel need to be present to perform
inspections, and direct loading/unloading of power related
boards is strictly prohibited.

Equipment Security
Description There are two aspects to equipment security. First, there should
be no damages to the board in the process of board replacement,
such as bent backplane pins caused by reckless operations.
Second, impact on other boards and system services should be
avoided in the process. Specifically, pay attention to the
following issues.
„ Avoid reckless operations in the process of board
replacement, such as installation, unscrewing screws,
unloading boards, with brutal force.
„ When replacing boards that may interfere with services,
avoid peak times. Choose times when the traffic is the lowest,
such as early mornings.
„ For boards running in active/standby mode, avoid replacing
the active boards directly. Perform the swapping first,
replace the board when it turns to the standby state.
Regular In the process of installing boards, eject the board in case it can
Inspection not be pushed in by the latch, and perform the following
examinations:
1. If the installation slot agrees with the specified one.
2. If the board is deviated from the duct.
3. If the connector pins of the backplane are bent or damaged.

Replacing OMP
Purpose The OMP board is the operation/maintenance center of the
foreground, and it furnishes communication between the
foreground and the background. Its main functions include
distribution of operation commands, reporting of the foreground
status, reporting of performance data, and management of the
version file. OMPs in AGW need to be configured to be working in
the active/standby mode, And they must be configured at slot
11 and slot 12 in shelf 2 of rack 1.
When the OMP board faults, the effects on the system include as
follows:
„ Communication between the foreground and the background
breaks, and the alarm system prompts that the link between
them is broken.
„ It is unable to send commands to the foreground from OMC.
„ Performance statistics data can not be reported.
„ The status of other boards in the foreground can not be
queried, and the boards can not work properly after restart.
„ All the services of the local office are interrupted.
