Job Description: President & CEO

Position Summary:
Tempe, Arizona is an urban oasis located in the heart of the Phoenix Metropolitan area.
Tempe is slightly less than 40 square miles in area and has a population of just over 160,000.
There are 330 days of sunshine annually and the average temperature is 85.3 degrees. Tempe
is home to Arizona State University, which boasts the largest student population in the
country. Tempe has many outdoor parks and publicly accessible spaces, including Tempe
Town Lake, a 225 acre park surrounding a 2 mile lake that is home to over 40 annual events
and attracts around 2.5 million visitors annually.
The Tempe Tourism Office is a non-profit organization devoted to marketing Tempe, Arizona.
Our mission is to promote the City of Tempe as a desirable leisure and business travel
destination. Our staff provides information to visitors, media professionals and meeting
planners about Tempe hotels, restaurants, entertainment and local points of interest. The
Tempe Tourism Office promotes the 47 hotels that are present in Tempe as well as the many
shopping areas, entertainment districts, downtown area, cultural and sporting amenities.
The Tempe Tourism Office is seeking a full time President & CEO to lead this organization
during this exciting time of growth. This individual should be highly professional, experienced
in destination marketing, eager to lead a dynamic team of tourism professionals, and
passionate about this City and the tourism opportunities that exist here.
Reporting Structure:
The President & CEO reports directly to the Executive Committee and ultimately to the 25
member Board of Directors. The individual has responsibility for managing the 13 member
Tempe Tourism Office team.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:

 Work with the Board of Directors on development of strategies, programs and policies
to promote tourism.
 Along with the Chair of the Board, lead monthly board meetings.
 Manage, lead and inspire the highly functional staff of the Tempe Tourism Office.
 Oversee the development and implementation of an annual marketing plan to promote
hotels, attractions and events, including print, social media, internet based advertising,
and internal publications.
 Facilitate the creation and maintain a Strategic Plan for Tempe Tourism that will be
reviewed by the Tempe Tourism Board of Directors every 3-5 years for adjustments,
exclusions, or new goals to stay relevant, effective and successful.
 Oversee the planning and execution of an annual retreat that includes all staff and
board members.
 Create and oversee the annual tourism budget and annually report out the use of the
bed tax to the City of Tempe.
 Oversee the various functions within the organization including marketing,
communications and sales.
 Oversee regular research projects that quantify the value of tourism and justify the
funding allocations.
 Coordinate with community partners to attract new events or activities to Tempe that
have an impact on Tourism.
 Develop relationships with key partners, including but not limited to: The City of
Tempe leadership and key staff, Arizona State University, The Tempe Chamber, The
Downtown Tempe Authority.
 Develop relationships with local partners such as hoteliers and management teams of
shopping destinations and attractions.
 Develop relationships with national, international and regional tourism based
publications and writers, tour operators, meeting planners, and travel professionals.
 Oversee design, development and execution of familiarization tours with meeting
planners, hotel staff, event producers, etc.
 Represent the organization with media and serve as the primary spokesperson.
 Track the results of internal campaigns and oversee the recording of all pertinent
industry performance indicators, such as occupancy, revenue per available room
(REVPAR) and average daily rate (ADR).
 Develop and conduct an annual meeting to stakeholders that demonstrates the
achievements of the organization from the previous year.
 Represent Tempe Tourism as an advocate, whenever necessary, with the City of Tempe
and other agencies as new programs, ordinances, plans, developments are discussed.
 Collaborate with city and state officials to develop a crisis management plan and
determine what the Tempe Tourism Office’s role will be in the case of an emergency.
 Attend meetings, seminars, conventions and workshops to stay informed of the
changes in the tourism industry.
 Prepare and deliver presentations on tourism to local and regional civic organizations,
when requested.
 Remain knowledgeable on the issues and agenda items brought to the City Council and
be present at relevant meetings to convey the Tempe Tourism Office’s opinion.
 Manage, negotiate and renew any partnership agreements with outside producers and
keep the Board of Directors informed on the progress and outcome.
 Manage all contract negotiations with vendors for goods and services as approved and
budgeted.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

 Strong knowledge of the tourism industry;


 Strong knowledge of Tempe;
 Excellent organizational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple projects;
 Strong communication skills across all levels (internally, externally and to the Board);
 Strong attention to detail and ability to follow through;
 Excellent writing and editing skills;
 Minimum of six years of professional experience in the destination marketing industry
or a related industry;
 Minimum of three years of experience in executive level leadership;
 Must be computer literate and work comfortably with Microsoft Office products such as
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other products such as QuickBooks;
 Ability to effectively speak in public and to the media;
 Ability to handle stressful situations;
 Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships;
 Strong understanding of accounting principles and experience creating budgets;
 Must have experience managing others in a leadership role and cultivating a team
environment;
 Competence in initiating and implementing new strategic directions;
 Affiliation with or strong working knowledge of Destinations International and
Destination Marketing Association of the West (DMA West) preferred;
 Bachelor's degree required and Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.

ethical, possess excellent management skills and be able to work well with a diverse group of
city/county/state leaders, businesses, volunteers, and community stakeholder
groups. Additionally, they must demonstrate a passion for the tourism industry and for Tempe
as a destination.
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary commensurate with experience, ranging from $145,000 to $165,000.
Benefits include vacation, personal time, holidays, retirement plan, optional flexible work
schedule, health/dental/life benefits, bonus opportunities, cell phone reimbursement and
parking.
