Notes: There will be unfamiliar vocabulary in the reading exercise; this has been deliberately introduced to
encourage thinking skills, e.g. what is krill? Since English syntax is SVO, it must be a noun.
Superlatives
Superlatives

Adjectives of 1 syllable: add -est


small → smallest, old → oldest,

Adjectives of 3 or more syllables: add ‘the most’


intelligent → the most intelligent, beautiful → the most beautiful

Adjectives of 2 syllables: sometimes it’s ‘-est’ and sometimes it’s ‘the most’. If you don’t
know, say ‘the most’ and English speakers will understand.

Irregular: the best and the worst


‘best’ = ‘the most good’
‘worst’ = ‘the most bad’
For example:

Muhammad Ali was the best boxer in the world.

What is the largest animal in the world?


The largest animal in the world is the blue whale. It can be 30 metres long and weigh 180
tons (18,000 kilogrammes). It eats krill, which are very small crustaceans, similar to prawns
or crabs.

What is the fastest animal in the world?


The fastest land animal is the cheetah. It can run at 75 miles per hour! It lives in sub-Saharan
Africa. It is a predator and carnivore.

What is smallest bird in the world?


The smallest bird in the world is the bee hummingbird. It lives in Cuba. It is only about 6
centimetres long. It drinks nectar from flowers.
