Anthropologists Eleazer H u n t
(ESRI Inc) and Ezra Zubrow (SUNY
Buffalo) have been awarded a coopera-
tive agreement from the National Insti-
tute of Justice, for $519,000 to research
and develop crime analysis tools based
on Geographic Information Sytems
(GIS). The GIS goal is to develop pre-
dictive measures and social factors
related to criminal activity. Develop-
ment of these tools is part of an effort
to apply anthropological concepts to
law enforcement. This is an 18-month
project and will result in the creation of
a computer based application that will
be made available to law enforcement
agencies.
Mesoamericanist Grants
The Foundation for the Advance-
ment of Mesoamerican Studies Inc
formed in 1993 to foster broader under-
standing of ancient Mesoamerican cul-
tures announces its annual grant com-
petition. The goal of the foundation is
to support and promote advancements
in fields focusing on ancient Precolum-
bian Mesoamerica. Projects may in-
clude fieldwork, laboratory analysis,
archival research or writing support.
Grants are intended to provide assis-
tance for scholarly investigations of
Precolumbian Cultures of Mesoamerica
(limited to present Mexico Guatemala,
Belize, Honduras and El Salvador).
Applicants may be working in such
fields as anthropology, archaeology, art
history epigraphy, ethnohistory, histo-
ry, linguistics or multidisciplinary stud-
ies involving any suitable combination

Research Fellowships In India
The American Institute of Indian
Studies is a cooperative, nonprofit
organizations of 49 American colleges
and universities that supports the
advancement of knowledge and under-
standing of India, its people and cul-
cation to sustained development. Earth-
Available to doctoral candidates at US
colleges and universities in all fields of
study. Specifically designed to enable
doctoral candidates to pursue their dis-
sertation research in India, establish
formal affiliation with Indian universi-
ties and Indian research supervisors.
Senior Research Fellowships: Avail-
able to scholars who hold the PhD or
its equivalent and are either US citizens
or resident aliens teaching at US col-
leges and universities. Designed to
enable scholars specializing in South
Asian studies to pursue further research
in India. Senior Fellowships establish
formal affiliations with an Indian insti-
tution. Senior Scholarly Development
Fellowships: Available to established
scholars who have not previously spe-
cialized in Indian studies and to estab-
lished professionals who have not pre-
viously worked or studied in India.

Grants for Field Research
The Center for Field Research (CFR)
invites researchers working in anthro-
pology to apply for an Earthwateh field
grant. Earthwateh is an international
nonprofit organization established in
1971 to support field research and pro-
mote communication between scholars
and the public. To date, Earthwateh has
supported more than 1000 research
projects in 118 countries with more
than 46,000 volunteers contributing
$34 million in research grants. These
funds are derived from the contribu-
tions of English-speaking Earthwateh
volunteers who join scientists in the
field to assist with data collection and
other research tasks. Earthwateh volun-
teers are not usually professional scien-
tists, but educated laypersons from
many walks of life committed to partic-
ipating in the investigation of scientif-
ic, environmental and cultural issues.
Over the course of one field season, a
typical Earthwateh project employs 15-
30 volunteers, each of whom con-
tributes an average of $700-900 toward
the field grant and spends 1-3 weeks in
the field. CFR will consider proposals
for any carefully constructed pure or
applied research project that can sub-
stantively involve these nonspecialists
volunteers. Projects that CFR has his-
torically recommended to Earthwateh
for support have included: historical,
prehistoric and underwater archaeolo-
gy; studies of alternative energy and
sustainable agriculture programs; pro-
grams that examine, document or pre-
serve cultural property and ethnic
diversity including music, dance, oral
and folk traditions; research that
assesses public health problems in
developing countries; studies of indige-
nous and local knowledge and its appli-

watch primarily supports postdoctoral
or equivalent scholarship, including
principal investigators with commensu-
rate life experience. Proposals from
advanced scholars of any nationality,
covering any geographic region, are
welcomed. Preliminary proposals must
be submitted at least 12 months in
advance of anticipated field dates. Full
proposals are invited on review of pre-
liminary materials. Proposals are

Grants
The Andrew Mellon Foundation
announces grants to enable anthropolo-
gists to "visit" selected demographic
centers and demographers to "visit"
selected anthropology departments, for
the purpose of collaborative research
on developing country population
questions. Proposals must be prepared
in collaboration with one of the anthro-
pology departments or demographic
centers selected by the foundation and
must be submitted to the foundation by
the institution. Budgets must not ex-

Archaeological Fieldwork
Grants
The John Heinz III Fund of the
Heinz Family Foundation announces
its grant program for archaeological
fieldwork in Latin America for 1999.
This program will fund 4-6 scholars to
conduct archaeological research in

Ethnographic Research
Training:
Brown U's Anthropology Depart-
ment has just received a 5-year Ethno-
graphic Research Training Award from
NSF. The award will enable graduate
students to undertake predissertation
research projects and aims to strength-
en training combining qualitative and
quantitative methods. The NSF award
will especially benefit students special-
izing in Anthropology & Population, a
specialty of the Brown department.
