SCHOOL OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

SQNLDR Residential - Course Subject Overview

Leadership Subjects

1. Leadership learning on the SQNLDR RC builds on studies at Officer Training

School (OTS), PMET distance learning, FLTLT RC, private studies and general work
experiences. Examination of the leadership modules has been developed to provide course
graduates with skills that can be taken back to the workplace, practiced and further honed to
suit individual styles and preferences. The subjects to be delivered are:

a. emotional intelligence/competence

b. coaching & mentoring

c. motivation & negotiation

d. command and leadership

e. developing ADF leaders, and

f. leadership and safety culture.

2. “Coaching 101” workshop by Air Force Adaptive Culture has been integrated into
the SQNLDR RC. Any individual who has previously completed the AFAC “Coaching 101”
workshop and has the PMKeyS proficiency P122396 against their record, is not required to
attend the activity again. Those who meet these circumstances are to send a screen shot of
their PMKeyS proficiency record showing the Coaching 101 proficiency, to the course co-
ordinator via email.

3. Other leadership studies will be predominantly delivered by presenters from the

Centre for Defence Leadership and Ethics (CDLE) and will be consolidated through activities
conducted in conjunction with various presentations. Understanding the transition from junior
officer to SQNLDR is an important course outcome; in particular, appreciating the different
roles and responsibilities of, and expectations for SQNLDRs.

Air Power Subjects

4. To work effectively as a SQNLDR, the level of air power knowledge must extend to
the strategic level. With this in mind, the SQNLDR RC will examine higher levels of air
power including:

a. ADF and RAAF structure (including higher government committees);

b. Command and Control;

c. Air Power capability;

d. Air Power doctrine;

e. Air Power strategy; and

f. future concepts.

Values and ethics subjects

11. Values and ethics underpin core attributes of RAAF and ADF leaders. These subjects
will be delivered by CDLE and are closely linked to the leadership sessions. The topics that
will be discussed during this learning module are:

a. organisational culture and values, and

b. role-modelling values and ethics.

12. Values and ethics studies will be consolidated during activities conducted in
conjunction with the leadership sessions delivered by CDLE.

Communication subjects

13. The communication learning module comprises an expectation of critical and

integrative thinking, and demonstration of communication skills. The application of these
skills will be consolidated throughout the course during multiple activities. The
communication and critical thinking skills have close application over the duration of the
course and will prove applicable and useful in your workplaces. Communication skills will be
assessed over the duration of the course.

Military Management subjects

14. The military management learning module incorporates military justice; which is
delivered by RAAF legal officers. Military justice, whether applied administratively or
judicially, is a vital tool that when applied properly, promotes good discipline and fosters
good morale. Importantly, the delivery of this module is structured around the development of
skills that underpin sound and just decision making via scenario based work. These skills
have direct application to wider leadership skills.

Senior Leadership Team (SLT) Interaction

15. In achieving the Air Force mission, the organisation faces a range of management
challenges. Activities throughout the SQNLDR RC will expose participants to these
challenges and help develop an understanding of how to resolve some of them. The SLT
interaction provides the course with an opportunity to present a range of current issues to
members of the SLT. Maintaining a record of issues as they arise during presentations and
syndicate discussions will provide a basis for this exercise. This forum provides middle
managers (in this case SQNLDR RC participants) with an opportunity to share concerns with
senior Air Force leaders, providing an avenue to influence Air Force.

16. This exercise concludes with an informal dinner. The dinner may be held in the
Combined Senior Sailors / Officers Mess (dress requirements are annotated in Annex B para
11), at a BBQ outside Gloucester House or at a commercial facility (at own cost). It is up to
the course participants to decide how they prefer to host the attending SLT members.
