About me. (John Fredy Sanchez.)

Born in 1994, I currently serve as a

future degree in English from the
University Colombia. My interest in
the English started by the to be a matter
that aroused a natural interest in
learning a new language and culture as
well as being fundamental to a world as
connected as it is today thanks to this
language.

My goal as an English teacher is to

convey that passion to my students that
same passion aroused in me learning
English; make it a more enjoyable way
to learn without having to be a matter
that look out of obligation. But the
students realizes how important it is to
learn English and how through this
language to know new experiences and
new places that they never had
imagined living.

Introduction:

The need to acquire a new language focus on topics according to the professions (English
for Specific Purpuses) or ESP for its acronym in English has become a priority in most
carreers that seek to expand and share knowledge in a globalized world.
Civil engineering is no stranger to this type of needs. Currently, they are implementing
new techniques of projects’ construction and planning that are taking place in our country
as for example reinforced concrete that seek to reduce costs and construction time or the
BIM (Building Information Modeling) which is having a high impact on the design of
new projects in Colombia. However, a lot of this information that comes from outside our
borders is always a challenge to our engineers who require a specific level in English to
apply these ideas at urban or rural level. An example is about Cartagena’s viaducts or the
constructions that are taking place in Bogota for the evolution of the international center.
The purpose of this magazine is focus in a priority to keep civil engineers up-to-date on
the news of the guild. In addition, to granting a pocket tool to those professionals who
want to improve their level of English according to their vocation through vocabulary
with essential words and basic communication skills and text comprehension.
Finally, this magazine joins the project of infrastructure change at the national level by
allowing professionals and those who will be in the future to change the country through
great ideas that are a service and benefit to the community and that way to design the
country of tomorrow.

Justification:
"BEAVERS" is proposed as a news magazine and professor aimed at future civil
engineers who wish to approach own career theme but focusing on bilingualism at the
forefront of current issues in civil engineering as well as offering a service of teaching
and training civil engineers.
As part of an integration program runs on a system of bilingualism, BEAVERS joins the
initiative to build between civil engineers and graduates in English a better country able
to face the new challenges of progress since the respective careers using English as
facilitator means for this purpose.
Each section of the magazine is composed as follows:

 Information section
It aims to give the report on trends that are driving in the field of engineering today in
addition to curious anecdotes and news data on larger projects nationwide.
 Training
This section is the main purpose of guiding prospective students on a particular topic
that is often linked to social needs that civil engineering experience using English
language for this purpose.

 Learning point.
This section is responsible for storing material support to facilitate learning in training
sessions where students can consult concerning bibliographical, essential vocabulary
and review the lesson plan to be developed by study session with their guides when the
student need, when you need it.

A look at the Bogota’s Metro first line

Bogota’s Metro design. Image: Bogotá’s town hall.

For a big city like Bogota, the need for efficient public transport supply has always been
a priority issue for more than 8.3 million projected for 2020. By the end of this year plans
to start the first 30% of the work, scattered on various fronts’ construction but mainly
according to plan Projects of National Interest in association with the Integrated Public
Transport System (PSIS) corridors in central Bogota, 72 Streeet and Caracas Avenue,
They are the highest priority to start construction.
The first stretch of 23.96 km in length and 16 stations from Western Length Avenue
(ALO) to 72 Street in Caracas Av. With 10 stations will exchange with Transmilenio
Phase 1 of the metro, the second tranche will go down the highway street north to 127.
With respect to section 1 having as a starting point the area of “El Corzo” in downtown
Bosa will have as main features an interchange station between Villavicencio Av. and
even in street construction ALO and then continue the journey by Las Americas Portal to
go in the direction West-East bearing intersections with avenues 1 de mayo, Boyaca,
Carrera 60 and the NQS up to 8th street south and then turn onto St. 1 to connect to the
city center by the Caracas avenue.
The technical aspects for this section are as follows:
 Length: 23.96 km including technical branch and shunting.
 16 stations
 Trains automatic mode without driver (UTO)
 maximum operating speed: 80 km / H
 commercial speed (average between stations) 43 Km / H
 Train interval 180 seconds.
 total number of trains: 23
 Viaduct columns 2.6 m in diameter.
 Viaduct height: 13.5 meters
In addition to this, we propose building under viaducts 13 km from ciclorurta in the stretch
east-west subway and 8 km along the Caracas avenue alongside an architectural
renovation of stations TM located along the Caracas avenue.

Finally it must be noted that locally have also made progress in implementing this
methodology planning and integration of 3D designs via software connected to the cloud
(BIM); in this case it corresponds to the Bogota’s Metro first line. On 12 September from
Bogota Council, the current manager of the Bogota Metro manager Andrés Escobar Uribe
presented in three renderings built with this new technology on the infrastructure that will
have the first line above.

The UGI building, a challenge in construction.

Built for the year 1972 by the

engineer Gullermo González Zuleta
who was in charge of other works of
extravagant designs for the time
among which are the UGI building
that was controversial since its
design was rejected by different
engineers to consider a utopian work
and illogical to perform.
By 1971 the architect Hernando
Vargas started the project of a tower
whose final destination would be the
use of offices in an area where a gas
station and an old memory house of
the propertied wealthy families who
inhabited the sector Chapinero
during the 40's was. Planning
building construction broke all
paradigms exposed for the time since
the construction of various plants
start from the top down. After soil
survey conducted that year was the
design of plans made for 1973
beginning with the work of laying foundation under the supervision of engineer in charge
González Zuleta along with the building design.

Using "caissons" was instrumental in the key of this type of building. A caisson is
basically a system designed to support large structures typically for residential use. Unlike
conventional piles they are of a wider thickness than the piles and for the foundation of
the UGI would determinants as in December 1971 corresponding soil studies were made
to 8,000 tons be supported concluding the excavation of said caissons hand nailed to a
depth of 32 meters deep, is as well as through 16 of these “pilarones” (the name given
engineer Zuleta), 4 of them would be the mainstay of the central core of the building.
Moreover, the tributary of the nearby river Archbishop was another challenge to consider
reason electric pumps do drained deep from the excavation of each caisson in addition to
the assembly of "elephant legs" that formed the backbone of the building then each
avocado put through the use of wires that supported the structure geometrically closed
and this opened in 1974.
The building is currently UGI regarding the skyline of this city being declared a World
Heritage City in 2001 being used since its completion as a center of banking and financial
interest since.

Economize on costs foundations.

Link: http://www.posada.org/importancia-de-buenos-cimientos/

It says the popular adage: "Cheap is expensive" and this term in areas of construction is
more than justified since reducing quality and material costs in the execution of works
and more than all the foundations of them can mean more than an economic issue but to
safeguard human lives.
Examples of poor planning in Colombia there are many, among the most prominent
building is the Space building. That's why simply not economize and make objective
decisions is also important to correct planning of the work so as not to bring bad terms a
project during and after its construction in environmental and legal issues.
Foundations, the beginning of everything.
It is common in the bidding process be asked contractors to perform the drilling rigs,
screens but when a contract commitment to accountability and provision of adequate
materials evades; Taking such decisions thus turns out to be quite dangerous. The soil
survey is done to take a sample of it and begin to straighten the piles or caissons depending
on the weight to hold the structure is the first step in determining soil components and
what materials and measures must be taken into account for the first phase of any
construction. Finding the balance between the economic and the stable is the great
challenge facing engineers in relation to the study of soils.
The science of soil survey itself is unpredictable because it takes into account the various
factors that should be considered in a work when being built, if there is no proper soil
management not only turns out to be quite dangerous but irresponsible and the main
responsibility lies with calculate in the country foreign trends mostly from Ecuador and
Venezuela in addition to the massive influx of multinationals East that do not make use
of national resources to implement projects even to impose models construction of those
countries where national geography has its main features that should be considered first.

The last factor to consider is hiring an entity that regulates the quality of materials and
execution of the work to avoid overruns tend to skip this step. Of good administration in
delivery dates can avoid further avoid mismatches in the balance in that account to carry
out a construction project.

To conclude these are the factors to consider when planning foundation:

1. Proper planning: is summarized in giving timely deliveries and calculate
delivery dates given quality.
2. Comprehensive analysis: Correct logistics management and soil studies.
3. Appropriate recruitment: Observe national companies that take into account
the real needs of the community in a process of construction.
4. Successful projects: Guaranteeing good economic uncertainty in construction
mitigates avoiding cost overruns on repairs and generating development.

Advantages and disadvantages of BIM.

System modeling and BIM construction has now been a major force in the development of the
construction of any work. S owever, should take into account certain guidelines that must be
known when implementing an integrated software system specially designed for this purpose and
integration to give the expected results both customers and the company itself during the
construction of a work. Here are the determining factors are mentioned to take into account;
advantages and disadvantages of BIM, its importance in the modern market and see if this system
planning is as essential or not when managing megaprojects.
 Advantages of BIM.
BIM on the one hand allows working with files and 3D models as in the traditional format of 2D
allowing a more complete view of the project more accurately and precisely regarding cost
analysis, materials and give a forecast of the final work also allowing changes to the plans when
the client or the same company require, in addition also allows possible errors and delays in
advance in the work to keep customers satisfied and coordinate a good teamwork with the
different managers of a work.
For architects it represents a big advantage since modeling in three dimensions allows correction
planes more easily than conventional representing this saves time and money by allowing see
even comparing adequate space and other features rather than in a plane bidimensional could not
see.

Another advantage to consider is to know in depth the characteristics, details and data to consider
as it is geographical aspect, energy impact, lighting and environmental impacts are taken into
account in the work or the building is planned to construct an example very simple is the
construction of a tunnel that crosses a mountain: through BIM can make a model of the mountain
letting you know how deep to dig, the time that the excavation will be spent, the necessary
adjustments that allow good estimates as can support the tunnel structure without collapsing under
the weight of the mountain and among other things that traditional way would take longer afford.
 Disadvantages of BIM
However despite the Bulding Information Modeling (BIM) has revolutionized the field of
construction worldwide there are aspects that must be taken into account as implementation: in
countries like Colombia is not yet being fully trained staff to implement BIM by market issues
and specialized as Autodesk Revit programs, there are still areas that have not trained their
workers to bring their ideas to a traditional context and continue managing 2D drawings in
addition to the management of a specific platform closing the possibility of using other strategies
planning.

 The importance of using BIM is it necessary?

Finally and to highlight the use of BIM is growing increasingly rapid effectiveness and agility
among construction and industry architecture to give a truthful to the needs that are required in
the construction response, the implementation of an efficient software for this purpose it has also
been key since him have achieved things that in previous years had taken longer to be managed.
Despite this, all is not perfect and marketing issue in some countries as noted is a determining
factor for implementation in addition to that as time passes can be seen other alternatives that are
equally efficient.

BIM In Colombia

Talk of BIM in Colombia is something novel to date since the country no such vanguards have
yet arrived under construction in bulk. ASOBIM is one of the first companies to implement this
model in the country. In the words of the same company that is based in Medellin BIM benefits
arising in improving the efficiency of large and small companies in various stages of construction
of a work; how to achieve better results in less time, thus meeting preestablished delivery dates
and seeking to implement this methodology in the country.
It also speaks to obtain efficient communication between the contractor and client allowing you
to see a preview of the building thus ensuring reliability between them when planning, have a
better waste management work in addition to better manage unforeseen expenses and
construction.
However it is not the only company in charge of leading this titanic action in the country since
the "yellow" company a large company specialized in housing construction company raises for
2012 to be the main manager of BIM in Colombia and as usual, the main reason for "Yellow"
began to implement this methodology was to avoid overruns in their efforts housing and office
construction in addition to avoid delays. In the words of Mario Ciardelli: Manager of Amarillo
says: "Colombia needs to start closing barriers regarding construction issues and knowing that the
BIM is a locomotive of the world economy in that field its impact on Colombia can be quite
significant."
The company meanwhile has begun to adopt management software Autodesk (Revit and
Navisworks) plus a handling system information for the proper execution of what has been so
getting to have in total 85% of those tasks performed in short time considering that the company
allocated an office specializing in BIM and an external consultant advised on the subject. The
results of implementing this strategy were almost immediate taking into account the factor
schedule of activities which reduced its running time by 19, construction costs by 23%, security
in the works of 7% and regulatory approval 21% cite some of the benefits.
The manager of Autodesk in Latin America Alejandro León rather highlighted the initiative of
"Yellow" in the country and hopes to continue working with this and other interested companies
to carry forward the standardization of this methodology in the country through special training
through BIM Forum Colombia .
