LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name: Mallory Gum

Grade Level: 8th Grade
School: Madison Middle School
Date: Friday 26, 2018
Time: 9:36-10:20

Reflection from prior lesson:

Last class we talked about algebra tiles. It went okay, but they were beyond algebra tiles. They
did everything the teacher asked but one kid raised his hand often and wanted to answer every
problem.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

CCSS.Math.Practice.MP1: Make sense of the problems and persevere in solving them
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP4: Model with mathematics
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP6: Attend to precision

Lesson Objectives:
Given a graph, students can place open and closed circles at the correct location with 85%
accuracy.

Materials Needed:
 Projector
 Desmos
 Computer

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

The class is about 20 students. This class is a math extension class, so the class is a split block.
They have math extension for 45 minutes and then study hall or band for the other 45 minutes of
the block. The students seem to have friends in the class. They are quiet, and they work well in
partners. If they pick their partners, they do fine so I don’t need to assign groups.

A. The Lesson
1. Introduction (10 Minutes)
Last class we talked about algebra tiles and today we are going to talk about inequalities. Can
anyone tell me what an inequality is? (Go over slide in powerpoint)
2. Content Delivery (30 Minutes)
a. Have the students go to Desmos
b. They will complete 1-4 and then I will pause them. I will ask them how they think the
graphs will look once all the students are done graphing.
c. They will complete 5-7 and then we will come together to discuss how the graph will
look now.
d. The students will complete 8-13 and then I will ask the students the difference
between open and closed circles.
e. The students will finish the Desmos activity
1. Closure (5 Minutes)
Ask the students what an inequality is. What is the difference between an open and
closed circle. Good job and you can work on whatever for the reminder of the class.

B. Assessments Used
I will observe the students throughout their Desmos activity.

C. Differentiated Instruction
Remediation: If students are struggling, I will help them individually with the
technology. I will assist as needed.
Enrichment: If students are understanding the content and finishing before others, I will
have them solve an inequality that I have written on the board.
Language Support: I will make sure the bilingual students are in the same group to
translate just in case one cannot speak English.

Reflection

For this lesson, I used Desmos to teach the students about inequalities. I feel like for this lesson,
I needed more than 45 minutes with the students. The beginning of the Desmos activity, seemed easy
for the students but once the students got to the matching portion, they struggled. They had to match
different graphs with the meaning of the graph in words. The students seemed engaged in this activity
since it was different than anything they’ve done before. I had the screen restricted so they couldn’t
move past certain slides, but some students took longer than others. Overall, I feel like the students
enjoyed using Desmos, but I wish we would have had more time.
