Curriculum Summary- Technology, Policies, and Standards
Setting district technology policies in place are important to an organization. It ensures standardization and consistency. Creating and updating these policies is also imperative as this allows for the adjustments in the ever-changing trends and legislation surrounding technology in K-12 schools.
District regulations are also a necessary part of this process, but there is a difference between a policy and a regulation. A policy is a formal guidance governed by the Board of Trustees. A regulation is the informal operational process in implementing the policy, which drives the vision and purpose of the district.
Another important component of technology policies and standards has to do with 508 compliance. 508 compliance requires that all web accessible content be accessible to persons with disabilities. This applies to web pages, web applications as well as documents. Any agency receiving federal funding is obligated to comply with section 508. This includes K-12 public agencies.
Additionally, technology plans are also an important component of technology policies and standards. Unlike the old technology plan template, the modern day technology plan is a living document that is often reviewed and adjusted, and in recent years worked more to incorporate the LCAP, which ties technology standards and practices into the curriculum.
Having technology, standards and policies in place is essential in maintaining balance and consistency in a K-12 organization and will continue to play an integral role in how districts carry out appropriate procedure, legislation and standard practice.
