Concert #3
“Nationalism”
Proposed date: Sunday, January 31st
Composers have often written pieces to serve as pillars of National identity. Join the
Mid-Columbia Symphony as we perform Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 – a piece
treasured in Finland as a symbol of Nationhood. Two other pieces celebrating
Nationalism in North America will round out the program – Galindo’s Sones de
Mariachi and Schuman’s New England Triptych.

Concert #4
“History”
Proposed date: Saturday, March 12th
The Mid-Columbia Symphony explores the history of the atomic age with a
performance of the Doctor Atomic Symphony by John Adams. Adams constructed the
piece from his opera about the life of Oppenheimer. Another piece about the history
of the American west, Copland’s Billy the Kid Suite, shares the program. This concert
will also feature our annual Young Artists’ Competition winners.

Both pieces are rental through Boosey and Hawkes (approx. $1200).
Concert #5
“Faith”
Proposed date: Saturday, May 21st
To close our season, the Mid-Columbia Symphony will perform music that explores
the idea of “Faith”, including Stravinsky’s dramatic Symphony of Psalms and the
majestic Gloria by Francis Poulenc. Other repertoire will offer varied perspectives
on “Faith” - Baal Shem: Three Pictures of Hassidic Life by Ernst Bloch and The
Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam by Alan Hovhaness. The MCS will be joined by the Mid-
Columbia Mastersingers, Mid-Columbia Boys’ Choir, guest Soprano Molly Holleran,
and guest artists on Violin and Accordion.
