“A Season of Symphonies”

The 2015-16 season

Each concert has one significant piece – a Symphony - that is the focus of the
program and lends a theme to each performance.

Concert #1
“Passion”
Proposed date: Saturday, September 19th

Join the Mid-Columbia Symphony as we kick-off our 71st season, “A Season of


Symphonies” with the passionate Symphony No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninov. Other
repertoire will include the Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez – a seductive
exploration of Latin dance music – and Ravel’s Bolero!

Concert #2
“Elegance”
Proposed date: Sunday, November 1st

“A Season of Symphonies” continues with the elegant Symphony No. 40 by Mozart.


Andy Hudson, a dynamic Clarinet player from Chicago, joins the orchestra as soloist
in Weber’s virtuosic Second Clarinet Concerto. The MCS also performs Respighi’s
charming re-settings of Medieval dances and airs.

Concert #3
“Nationalism”
Proposed date: Sunday, January 31st

Composers have often written pieces to serve as pillars of National identity. Join the
Mid-Columbia Symphony as we perform Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 – a piece
treasured in Finland as a symbol of Nationhood. Two other pieces celebrating
Nationalism in North America will round out the program – Galindo’s Sones de
Mariachi and Schuman’s New England Triptych.

Concert #4
“History”
Proposed date: Saturday, March 12th

The Mid-Columbia Symphony explores the history of the atomic age with a
performance of the Doctor Atomic Symphony by John Adams. Adams constructed the
piece from his opera about the life of Oppenheimer. Another piece about the history
of the American west, Copland’s Billy the Kid Suite, shares the program. This concert
will also feature our annual Young Artists’ Competition winners.

Concert #5
“Faith”
Proposed date: Saturday, May 21st
To close our season, the Mid-Columbia Symphony will perform music that explores
the idea of “Faith”, including Stravinsky’s dramatic Symphony of Psalms and the
majestic Gloria by Francis Poulenc. Other repertoire will offer varied perspectives
on “Faith” - Baal Shem: Three Pictures of Hassidic Life by Ernst Bloch and The
Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam by Alan Hovhaness. The MCS will be joined by the Mid-
Columbia Mastersingers, Mid-Columbia Boys’ Choir, guest Soprano Molly Holleran,
and guest artists on Violin and Accordion.

Mid-Columbia Mastersingers plus Boys’ Choir - $4,000
Soprano Molly Holleran - $1,500 (no travel)
Solo Accordion player - $1,500 [I’m working on getting a guy that I know from
Seattle. This total would be for pay plus travel.]
Solo violin - $1,500 plus travel [I’m negotiating with a friend of mine from Chicago.]
Speaker/Narrator – We get some minor local celebrity to do this for free, or we get
Judge Kathren off of our board to do it for free.
Total $ will be about $10,000

Hovhaness is rental through Fujihara (cheap - $200 or so).


Stravinsky is rental through Boosey and Hawkes (approx. $750).
Bloch is rental through Presser (approx. $300).
Poulenc is rental through Boosey (approx. $750).
