The Impact of Multimedia on Society, An Overview By: William Williams, Marta Merlino-Calvert, Jamie
Crider, Tanisha Lee Company Name: LCCW Module 2, Week 2 August 2002 Multimedia is one of the
fastest growing areas of technology. Multimedia is simply defined as a combination of text, graphics,
animation, video, and sound to communicate information. Multimedia has several benefits and uses. A
few of the benefits of multimedia are: 1) Flexibility, 2) Interactivity (the amount of control the user has
over the presentation of information), 3) Attention-getting, and 4) Integration of different types of
information (hopefully, to make the information easier to understand). A few of the uses of multimedia
are: 1) Business, 2) Government, 3) Consumer Marketing, 4) Communication, and 5) Education. “The
term multimedia became a buzzword in computer-related fields in 1993…”
(http://fiat.gslis.utexas.edu/wyllys/multmed/mm03.html#multimedia%20history), but multimedia was
used in various fields long before the term became popular. In education, especially, multimedia was
used to help educate students, but the term meant the use of movies, slideshows, audiocassettes, etc.
Today that definition has been greatly expanded. The history of multimedia is a history of technology
and engineering. Multimedia’s history is quite varied beginning with early man and cave drawings, to
the ancient wonders of the world and continuing today with new technological advances developed and
announced daily. Major advancements in technology and multimedia have changed the way society
does business. Multimedia has allowed the movement of commercial TV to the Internet and TV-quality
commercials available on websites. In addition, television itself has changed with many multimedia-type
presentations being used in all areas. Newspapers have gone digital by posting versions of their black-
and-white print to the Internet. Book distribution has been changed with the creation of book-by-
demand websites. This makes it possible for authors, who might never have been published in black-
and-white, to get published. Digital films are being distributed through the Internet. If you listen to
music on the radio, DJs talk about the music being played through the computer system they are using.
Ever have a diagnostic medical test done? Technology and multimedia are everywhere. Many new
businesses have been created that only do business on the Internet. Businesses such as Travelocity, E-
bay, Napster and others have made and lost millions of dollars trying to do business only through
Internet access. Many other companies such as LL Bean, Best Buy, and Fidelity (Investments) have very
successful marketing tools in websites. It is almost unthinkable to have a business without a website,
anymore. The educational use of multimedia is probably the area that teachers are most concerned
with. Educational multimedia is rapidly increasing. Its power to present information in ways not
previously possible and its integration of resources allows for the creation of rich learning environments.
We, as teachers, are teaching a generation raised on video games, arcades, and

allows a teacher to grab and hold a student’s attention by transforming information into a game or
music video making the subject more interesting. Not only has multimedia changed the way teachers
present information to students, multimedia has changed the way students learn. Long-distance classes,
Satellite classes and Internet-only classes have become prevalent in all areas of education. Look at our
own TATC courses. It only takes a computer and Internet access to gain access to just about any piece of
information these days.
