CHAPTER 1
Primary sources – materials such as manuscripts, letters, recordings originating from or contemporary with
the topic of your study.
Secondary sources – sources that are based on primary sources. Ex: musical editions based on a composer’s
autograph manuscript.
Tertiary sources – sources based on secondary sources. Ex: directories and chronologies.

Online catalog – online database including the bibliographic records for a particular library or collection.
Collective uniform titles – generic title used to describe a particular genre of composition, ex: symphonies
Triangulation – using keyword searches to identify the subject heading for a particular topic.
National library – a library that holds all the works copyrighted in a particular country.
CHAPTER 4
Journals – scholarly publication, usually appearing regularly, that includes primarily articles.
Magazines – popular/unscholarly publication, usually appearing regularly, that includes primarily articles.
Periodicals – publications such as journals and magazines that are published regularly with the same title.
Serial – publications that are issued at regular or irregular intervals with the same title.
Citation – reference to another work, along with the bibliographic information needed to find the original source.

Conference papers – published versions of papers read and presentations given at conferences.
CHAPTER 7
Complete works edition – the works of a single composer compiled into a single publication.
Historical set/edition – collection of music by multiple composers intended to represent music history
generally or a specific style period or genre.
Musical monument – edition of works by multiple composers representing the music of a region or country.
Anthology – collection of works, usually by different authors, generally grouped by a common theme.
Facsimile edition – reproduction of an older work that is designed to be an exact copy of the original.
