5th International Conference ‘Crossroads of Languages and Cultures:

Languages and Cultures at Home and at School’ (CLC5)

The Centre for Intercultural and Migration Studies of the Department of Primary
Education/CERS of the University of Crete, Greece organizes the 5th International
Conference ‘Crossroads of Languages and Cultures’ (CLC5) with the cooperation
of Polydromο (http://www.polydromo.gr).
Τhe theme for CLC5 is ‘Languages and Cultures at Home and at School’ as we wish
to bring together scholars investigating the complex interplay between these two
‘spaces’ and how they affect the development of bicultural and bilingual development
among students of minority or immigrant background. In particular we would like to
bring to the fore transformative and empowering theoretical models and pedagogical
practices, implemented either at school or at unofficial sites of learning, such as
complementary schools, family and faith settings.
The 5th Crossroads of Languages and Cultures will take place at the city of
Rethymno, Crete (Gallou University Campus) on 1-3 June 2018. Contributions are
welcome in Greek and English.

Thematic areas/Tracks
CLC5 invites papers in the following areas:
1. Language use/language maintenance/language policy in bilingual families
2. Developing biliteracy at school and at home
3. School–Home Cooperation: exploiting all students’ linguistic assets and
‘funds of knowledge’
4. Applying good practices/innovative teaching methods to empower students
with a different cultural background and to implement Intercultural Education
5. Teacher training in the area of bilingualism and intercultural education
6. Greek as a second language among Diaspora Greeks; language practices,
educational policies and future perspectives.
Categories of proposals

There are four categories of proposals: (1) individual papers, (2) posters, (3) colloquia
and (4) workshops.

• Individual papers: Papers are formal presentations on original research by

one or more authors, lasting a total of 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation
and 10 minutes for discussion).
• Posters: Posters are especially effective for presenting work-in-progress,
fieldwork and results of empirical research if data can be presented visually
(e.g. charts, graphs, tables). A block of time will be designated when
presenters are available to discuss their posters.
• Colloquia: Colloquia allow for extended discussion on a particular topic with
a cluster of 4-5 independent papers and a joint discussion. Colloquia are
presented in a time block of 2 hours and the colloquium organizer(s) will
decide upon the allocation of this time between the introduction, individual
papers and the discussion (20’-30’).
✓ Workshops (120’) are intended to involve participants (a maximum of 20) in
hands-on activities and/or to acquaint them with good practices.

Details of the form of abstracts for all types of proposals will be available in the next
Call for Papers. All proposals will be evaluated by the CLC5 Scientific Committee.
Individuals may submit a maximum of one abstract as a first author, whether a paper,
a poster, or as part of a colloquium. In addition, an individual may have a role as a
colloquium organizer, or co-author/co-presenter of another paper or poster or a
workshop organizer.

A selection of papers which will have been presented at the CLC5 will be published
in digital form after the conference.

Detailed information on Keynote Speakers, participation cost and registration will be

provided in the Second Call for Papers in late February 2017.
