World War III: What Ifs?

By Ty Bomba

A New Kind of Global War

World War II was the first global war and in many respects the last
European war. By 1945, the era of European hegemony had clearly been
supplanted by continental powers, the United States and the Soviet Union.
That alone might have been enough to bring the new super powers into
collision, but they were also polar opposites in their political and economic
outlook. For decades they faced off, testing one another directly and using
surrogates in otherwise local wars, but never coming to actual blows.

The term Cold War is commonly used to describe the era, though
neither it nor the era is more than vaguely defined. Some cite the Cold
War’s start as early as the London Council of Foreign Ministers meeting
on 11 September 1945—just nine days after the Japanese surrender—at
which the Soviets demanded the USSR be awarded the former Italian
colony of Libya as a UN trusteeship. Other writers put its beginning as
late as the Berlin blockade crisis on 24 June 1948. The end date is usually
given as either the fall of the Berlin Wall (9 November 1989) or the day
the Soviet Union was officially dissolved (26 December 1991).

Whatever the definitions, it was a period fraught with danger for the peoples
of the entire world as the Cold War nearly turned hot on numerous occasions.
During the Cold War, the US conducted over 1,000 nuclear tests between 1945 and 1992.

Dear Fellow Wargamers:
Welcome to our Fall 2018 edition! It was a really long
summer with conventions almost every weekend (even
weekend to weekend for ConSimWorld Expo and World
Boardgame Championships!). We celebrated Decision
Game’s 30th anniversary at several conventions where
we continued setting up and expanding board game
libraries. We continue to advocate for creating a network
of game clubs, conventions, and stores so there are plenty
of opportunities for new gamers to get involved in our
hobby. We’re also working to bring in new gamers via our
magazines and smaller games. Mini-games continue to be
a great way to get students and euro board gamers started
in wargaming, and we will be expanding our convention
tour to include home school conventions in 2019.

D-DAY BOX GAMES WITH MOUNTED GAME BOARD
1988-2018 D-Day at Iwo Jima
D-Day at Iwo Jima is a solitaire game simulating the amphibious invasion of Iwo
Jima. The five-week battle was some of the bloodiest fighting in the Pacific. In one of
the costliest intelligence failures of the war, the planners had completely misjudged
the situation that would face the Marines. The beaches had been described as
excellent and the advance inland was expected to be easy. Instead, the Marines
were faced with 15-foot-high slopes of soft black volcanic ash that brought the
normally rapidly moving Marines down to a slow plod. In addition, the lack of a
vigorous response led the Marines to believe that the bombardment had completely
suppressed the defenses. However, Gen. Kuribayashi was far from beaten.
Understanding that his forces were insufficient to defeat the massive American
invasion force, he had decided to defend the island in-depth.
In D-Day at Iwo Jima, designer Joe Youst builds on John Butterfield’s award
winning solitaire game system. The player controls three US Marine divisions against
a determined Japanese defense. The no-dice combat system highlights the unknown
enemy deployments and coordination of the right weapon systems and tactics.
Players familiar with the previous three games in the system will be able to quickly
set up and play this latest version. New features include a random fortification
generation system that simulates the ability of the Japanese forces to “re-fortify”
supposedly weakened positions and an updated infiltration system that encourages
the player to maintain a continuous line.

D-Day at Peleliu
D-Day at Peleliu is a solitaire game simulating the amphibious invasion of
Peleliu in the Palau Islands. The Marines assaulted with the primary goal
of capturing the airstrip nestled amid jungle and overlooked by forbidding
mountain terrain. Though Maj. Gen. William Rupertus, commander of the
division, predicted a quick four-day victory, the battle was instead a two-month
fight to the death against some 10,000 tenacious Japanese.
In D-Day at Peleliu, designer John Butterfield advances the solitaire system
of his award-winning D-Day at Omaha Beach to the next level. You control
the US forces against a Japanese defense determined to hold the island at
all costs. An innovative no-dice combat system highlights unknown enemy
deployments and the importance of using the right weapons and tactics. Event
cards keep the action flowing and the rules simple while introducing historical
detail.
Players familiar with Omaha Beach will recognize the hazardous amphibious
landings, overlapping enemy fields of fire, uncanny enemy tactics, and the
emergence of heroes and leaders as the battle unfolds. In Peleliu new features
cover coordinated Japanese counterattacks, close combat, fortified positions
in coral and mountain terrain, and the hellish canyons and peaks of Umurbrogol
Mountain, ever after referred to by the Marines as “Bloody Nose Ridge.”
Though primarily designed for solitaire, the game can easily be adapted for
team play with two or more US co-commanders.

The Battle of Coronel simulates the 1 November 1914 meeting engagement off the coast of
Chile between the German East Asia Squadron of Vice Admiral von Spee and the British 4th
Cruiser Squadron under Rear Admiral Cradock. The historical outcome was the loss of Cradock’s
largest ships.

The Battle of Falkland Islands simulates the encounter between von Spee’s squadron and
a much more powerful British naval force on 8 December 1914. This time the British exacted a
heavy revenge, virtually obliterating the German squadron.

Deluxe edition
World War I Deluxe is an update of the Joseph
Miranda game published in Strategy & Tactics #294.
It includes updated graphics with a Mounted Game
Board. Included are the Optional Rules and Set-up
maps not published in the original magazine version.

World War I originated in a combustible mix of dynastic

ambition, nationalism, and misplaced confidence in a short
war. Europe was an armed camp with mass armies formed
by conscription and national reserves. Antagonism, fear,
and suspicion drove nations into a lacework of alliances.
Sarajevo provided the spark that set it off, and in a matter of
days the continent was at war, with empires in the balance.

RAF: Eagle puts you in control of the Luftwaffe forces raiding
England. You schedule raids and assign missions to your
bombers and fighters, attempting to deliver the knockout blow.
Can you take out the British radar system and cripple their
aircraft production? The game controls the RAF response to your
strategies. How does a foe so close to defeat keep coming back?
