FIELD EXPERIENCE
By the end of my Ph.D. I will have completed over 5 months of fieldwork on sedimentary geology, rift
tectonics, and tephra analyses in the East African Rift. A large part of my fieldwork has involved
geologic mapping, fault identification, tephra characterization and sampling, stratigraphy, and providing
geologic support for the paleontologists, anthropologists, and archaeologists.
 3.5 weeks in Afar, Ethiopia (2018): Geologic mapping, stratigraphy, surface processes, tephra
geochemistry and basin development in the Afar Depression
 2-day Field assistant Pinacate Volcanic Field, Mexico (2016): Assisted an ASU graduate student
in geologic interpretations and mapping
 7 weeks in Afar, Ethiopia (2015): Geologic mapping, stratigraphy, surface processes, tephra
geochemistry and basin development in the Afar Depression.
 2-day Field assistant in Pinaleno Mountains, AZ (2015): Assisted an ASU graduate student in
shallow seismic survey.
 2 weeks at Lake Magadi, Kenya (2014): Scientific drilling for the Hominin Sites and Paleolakes
Drilling Project.
 8 weeks in Afar, Ethiopia (2013): Geologic mapping, stratigraphy, surface processes, tephra
geochemistry and basin development in the Afar Depression.
 2 weeks Field assistant in Utah and Nevada (2011): Assisted a UC Davis graduate student in
geologic mapping, sample collection, geologic interpretations and stratigraphic sections.

LAB EXPERIENCE
In the lab, I have experience with all aspects of tephra preparation and analysis. Preparation
techniques include sieving, acid treatment, magnetic separation, heavy liquid separation, and creating
epoxy sample mounts. I am proficient conducting wavelength-dispersive spectrometry on a JOEL JXA
8530F Hyperprobe using JOEL software and some experience with the Probe for Windows Microsoft
software.
 Tephra and feldspar sample preparations and electron microprobe analyses for the Ledi Geraru
2013, 2015, and 2018 tephra samples at ASU (2013-2018)
 Sample preparations and LA-ICP-MS analyses of HSPDP and LGRP tephra with Diana Roman
at Carnegie Institute of Washington (March and June 2017)
 Sample preparations and electron microprobe analyses of Causcasus Mountains, Azerbaijan
tephra samples for Adam Forte at ASU (2016)
 Tephra and feldspar sample preparations and electron microprobe analyses for the Hominin Sites
and Paleolakes Drilling Project at ASU (2015-2016)
 XL-30 Environmental SEM for Na-Ca-K ratios of feldspars from the Ledi Geraru 2013 tephra
samples at ASU (2013)
