Njenga Karume, Honesty Starts
Right on the Cover of his
Biography

THE UNREAL UNIVERSE
A Book on Physics and Philosophy
"For thinking laymen."
Easy AdSense by Unreal

Since a few years ago, writing biographies or autobiographies has become common in Kenya. But
much of what has come out so far have been useless public relations write-ups that hide more than
they reveal.

Even the titles of the books are clear warnings that the reader is about to join in a trip of self- ego,
meant only to deceive the world. Writer John Kamau puts it more dramatically when, in 1999, in a
review of retired President Daniel arap Moi’s biography, Moi: The Making of an African Statesman,
he says that the book “sounds like a panel beating exercise on an old wreck.”

Beyond Expectations, in deed!

Not so, of course, is Njenga karume’s biography, Beyond Expectations – From Charcoal to Gold.
Karume tries in the book, to “bare all” and to tell his story with humor, pace and sensitivity.

Of course, writing a biography presents a few challenges. One of them is choosing what to tell and
what to leave out. Whatever you tell, someone is bound to say you left out important details – as some
are already saying Karume has done in his biography.

Some people are saying that Karume got his wealth in unfair ways, and he doesn’t state that. Of
course, we should be honest and serious. If I was Karume and I had gotten my wealth unfairly, I am
also leave that out. No one, except Bishop Gilbert Deya, would include such details – unless, of
course, that was the purpose of the book.

THE UNREAL UNIVERSE

A Book on Physics and Philosophy
"For thinking laymen."

Much is actually Revealed

To Karume’s credit, there are many narratives in his book which show that he exploited his ethnicity
to a great extent to amass his wealth. For example, he exploited his ethnicity to create Gema which
brought him much closer to President Jomo Kenyatta who, of course, passed on some businesses like
Kenya Wine Agencies to Karume and his Kikuyu group of wine merchants. Had Karume been another
tribe, he would possibly not have got the businesses he got from Kenyatta’s government.

But there are those who will argue that as a businessman, it is being shrewd to seize any opportunity
to increase your wealth. After all, there weren’t only two Kikuyus – Kenyatta and Karume. There
were millions of Kikuyus, who having no talent in business didn’t recognize the opportunity the
Kenyatta government presented for them to make money. And many are today poor and squatters
because of this – even if they like to pretend that there was conscience in their not making money.

Lessons for Entrepreneurs

For entrepreneurs, there are a few lessons you can draw from Karume’s story
1. Always use any lift that is offered on your way to success. Kenyatta’s presidency offered Karume a
lift on his way to becoming a multimillionaire.
2. Learn the value of social networks. Karume understood this and created Gema which he used to
reach Kenyatta and the rest of those in power. Oginga Odinga used it create wealth and power with his
Luo Thrift and Trading Company. If you cannot create Gema or thrift company, follow Barack
Obama’s example to Face book or Twitter.

It is obvious to everyone that US President Barack Obama is, at heart, more of a Kenyan than an
American. His involvement in the politics of changing the country’s constitution is not that of a
friendly observer. He is an active part of the process.

Should we vote “yes” for the draft constitution come the referendum in August 2010? My answer is
still No. And the appearance of a Dictator’s Draft Constitution has made me much more convinced to
vote against the draft constitution.

A police dog does not come cheap as a motorist who knocked down one in Kenya realized. The court
put the price at Shs 80,000 (some $1,000), thereby raising some interesting debate with ordinary
Kenyans arguing that the dogs were overpriced

Since the International Criminal Court (ICC) decided it would take up investigation on the 2008 post
election violence case following an outcry for justice from Kenyans, top officials and politicians in
President Mwai Kibaki’s Party for National Unity (PNU) have been uncomfortable. They have so far
tried every trick known to them to block the work of the international body.

Chris Kirubi is one of the wealthiest and most powerful people in Kenya today. He is a business
associate of Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki. And, in deed, Kibaki’s son, David Kibaki is a director of
Mr. Kirubi’s flagship company, International House Ltd.

Despite making a huge profit, local retail investors are not impressed by “Eastern Africa’s most
successful “company, Safaricom. The mobile operator announced pre-tax profits of Shs 20.9 billion,
but its dividends remain at the level local retail investors are calling “ridiculously low.”

I’ve always said that it’s very hard to ascertain the source of wealth of many people in Kenya. For
some, I can understand why they’d not want to talk about it, but for those who claim to have made
their money honestly, why not talk about it? It’s the one thing I admire about entrepreneurs in the
west: they’ll tell you how they did it and what it took; they’ll give speeches, they’ll write books,
they’ll teach classes, etc, etc. Even the newly minted Indian entrepreneurs are beginning to do this.
Why not Africans? we hide the money under our beds and guard it with pangas. Why?

Okay. I’ve cleaned up the list, but it’s still all pure guesswork on my part.

The Thieves Politicians:

Moi & family ($1.2 billion)

Kenyatta’s ($400 million)

Biwott ($700 million)

Saitoti ($100 million)

Kibaki ($ 100 million)

Michuki ($100 million)

*Awori ($5 million; how much can you really make selling bricks? & I also don’t think Awori stole.
or did he?)

Manufacturing:

Chris Kirubi ($10 million)

Manu Chandaria ($10 million)

Naushad Merali ($10 million)

Kuguru Foods ($2 million)

Finance:

Jimnah Mbaru ($5 million)

James Mwangi ($2 million)

Who else?

The Up & Comers:

The Founders of Kencall? ($0, but in 10 years, who knows? do you see them becoming like a Wipro
or even an Infosys? hmmmm)

In this section, I want to include a list of younger Kenyans who may end up making their money
{honestly} by tapping into emerging technologies like the internet and mobile phones and/or starting
outsourcing companies.

Feel free to add, eliminate or amend this list.

How did you miss me in your list? Haven’t you seen my bank A/C balance at Webster 5 cents credit
union??

Just curious? How did you base your ‘estimates?’

2.
kenyanentrepreneur on October 29, 2007 at 10:08 pm
My estimates are pure guesses with absolutely no proof or basis.

Aren’t you already on the Forbes list??

3.

just what? on October 30, 2007 at 6:29 am

does awori really make bricks?

your estimates for michuki might be slightly off, tune them down a little.
and where’s jimnah mbaru, the nse chairman? surely he’s been a good boy and ‘taken care of
business’.

4.
Sean on October 30, 2007 at 6:46 am

This list looks like pure guesswork to me. Where the f@$k is Paul Kamlesh Patn, MAtiba, Simeon
Nyachae and Michuki cant be worth all that…..

5.

KE on October 30, 2007 at 9:22 am

Sean:
I admitted it was pure guess work on my part! and I also invited people to add to the list….please feel
free to do so.

Isn’t Matiba having financial problems with his schools and hotels?

Just what:
I thought Awori started a business where he sold those red bricks that go on people’s rooftops? No?

6.
mainat on October 31, 2007 at 5:29 am

Rich Kenyan entreprenuers do talk about how they made it. Have a look in the Financial Post
(http://www.financialpost.co.ke/Pages/archives.html), I can’t remember exactly which issue featured
Joe Wanjui, but they have done several.
If its a rich list you are after this (http://217.21.125.81/index.php.....=index.php) one has who owned
what at end of Dec 2006 in the NSE.

7.

kenyanentrepreneur on October 31, 2007 at 8:28 pm

I forgot to add Amos Wako to this list (a reliable source told me that he has about $100 million u.s.
dollars hidden away in new york bank accounts)

8.
max on October 31, 2007 at 8:46 pm

Yes, pure guess work indeed. Reality is that Awori is and has been the richest politician not only in
Kenya but in East Africa. His family is scattered between Kenya and Uganda and they are many.

9.

kenyanentrepreneur on October 31, 2007 at 9:11 pm

How much is he worth? and how did he make his money?

10.
just what? on November 4, 2007 at 6:49 am

dont know about awori, but some interesting guy by the name paul ndungu appears about five times
on the nse richlist from mainat, with his smallest holding being 7mill (standard group) and his largest
being 1.4bilion (KQ). any one know who he is?

11.

kenyanentrepreneur on November 6, 2007 at 1:21 pm

I googled paul ndungu’s name and found this:

“Another notable kingpin at the stock exchange is Paul W. Ndungu and Nelson M.Njoroge,
ranking as one of the top local individuals appearing among the billionaires atthe NSE”.

I think he is a lawyer and author/chairperson of the ndungu report.

KE, thanks for the link. Quite obscure, though. Who puts this info up?

13.

mainat on November 7, 2007 at 4:12 am

Paul Ndungu is one of the original Safaricom dealers. He used the proceeds to buy shares in KQ and
other companies when they were going for a song (Ksh7 etc)

14.
KE on November 7, 2007 at 10:24 am

Just what:

I don’t know who put this info up.

mainat:

What do you mean by “one of the original safaricom dealers” – does he own part of safaricom like
Moi and family?

15.

just what? on November 8, 2007 at 2:47 am

i believe mainat means the original licensed retail dealers for airtime/top up time. i know another who
made enough to leave a UN job, so ndungu might be genuine after all.

16.
mainat on November 8, 2007 at 5:36 am

The link is from financial post who sourced the infomation from the NSE listed companies’s annual
reports. Hasinet another website also has all the top 10 shareholders of each NSE listed company.

KE-for an entreprenuer who goes on about the internet, whose main selling pt is info, you seem to be a
poor utiliser esp where Kenyan busi is concerned. There is a few very rich thieves in Kenya. There are
even more genuine rich businessmen in Kenya.

17.

just what? on November 9, 2007 at 1:57 am

mainat; do those genuine businessmen include those who can influence government procurement and
tendering? because getting rich in kenya means selling to the government(eg road contractors) or to
the masses(eg safaricom).

18.
KE on November 9, 2007 at 3:29 pm

Mainat:

You seriously did not say that they are very few rich thieves in Kenya, did you? As just what
mentioned, stealing does not just mean taking money out of an office in a gunia! There’s all kinds of
shadiness going on. Take safaricom for instance, who owns that 5% stake? is that not stealing?

I’ve always maintained that the reason africa is so poor is because we don’t produce anything. They
are very few indigenous african companies and when you don’t produce, you don’t create jobs and
without jobs, you have high unemployment and high poverty rates.

India has poverty, but you see how their economy is changing – they have home grown global
companies (tata industries, wipro, infosys, steel companies, etc, etc.). I know Kenya’s economy is
growing as well, but how long can a countries economy really go without a manufacturing base,
without home grown businesses that are part of the global economy and without exports that do not
include agricultural commodities?
19.

Nelius on November 16, 2007 at 5:02 am

where are magnate ventures, esther Passaris, Paul Ndungu, Sam jairu, etc?

20.
KE on November 16, 2007 at 10:55 am

I don’t know? what do you know about them? should they be on the list? we already mentioned paul
ndungu in the comments section.

Who is sam jairu?

21.

According to ireeputable sources Kabogo is said to be worth over $10,000,000. This is wealth that has
been increasing by the day, from the Nakumatt stores, container Depots and income from Real Estate.
It is also said that he owns most Of riverside, through dummy Companies.
Wow if i had 10 mil USD, i’d also get me on of those Choppaz!!!!

Ati 10, that KAfogo guy is worth like 1.5Billion USD, yeah he’s that rich, calculate the cost of a
chopper, its like 2 m USD, and that Jet that he has is abt 10mil USD. Talk about cash man.

27.

This Kabogo man is said to be so rich….We are talking Nakumatt, Village Market, Inland Port in Athi
River, His Choppers and Jets, Massive land in Nairobi….Worth hundreds of Millions….Not to
mention his palatial Nyali, riverside, muthaiga and ruiru homes.

A very reputable source says he is worth over 1 billion US dollars

You cant leave behind this Citizen guy out S.K Macharia mathugumo i do know if the spelling is ok,
but you all rember during the Moi days he was said to be worth 2 billion and now with all those media
houses he might have broke that record.

33.

Anonymous on April 20, 2008 at 9:08 pm

You all have far too much time on your hands! And speaking as the son of one of those mentioned
above, this ‘guess work’ is totally off!
34.
Jonny Swaggs on April 23, 2008 at 5:03 am

I think it is safe to say that there are at least 100 Kenyans worth between $20million and $1.5 billion.

About Kabogo I think you are confusing ostentation and wealth. The guy is wealthy, but he is also
young and naturally he wants to showing off.

A 4 seater chopper doesn’t cost $10million, one can lease a Chopper from SA for about than
$100,000/yr including insurance and qualified Pilot. One can charter a Gulfstream 3 (10yr old plane)
for about $20,000/week from SA GulfStream lease agencies.

I would give Kabogo about $5 million, because a lot of his other investments are mixed up with his
father in Law (mwau) investments.

The lesson is, get a rich girl and kiss her dads behind.

35.

Does Notmatter on April 26, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Kabogo is not married to Mwau’s Daughter and i am sick and tired of everybody messing up his CV
for nothing. He was once a business ally of Mwau.

Dont forget upcountry trillionaire landlords. Hapa in Eldy we have d very strangely wealthy Nyairo

38.
myself on May 24, 2008 at 1:24 pm

‘ The others’ quit hiding behind anonymity if anything you say about ‘upcountry trillionaires’ has any
fraction of truth…. own a quarter of Eldoret indeed. And homes abroad… oh, how we wish. As for the
400 million, where is your proof? Shameless and foolishly jealous coward wasting your precious time
hating others on the basis of pure fiction!!! It is lies like these that have inflammed passions in that
unfortunate town calle Eldoret. And by the way, there are 3 people, not 1, who go by the name Alfred
Nyairo. Which one are you talking about????

39.

Nyairolet on May 25, 2008 at 3:07 pm

‘The others’ Its amazing how one can provide information with such obvious maliciousness and
proclaim it to be truth. Even with the 3 Alfred Nyairo’s you failed to mention, do you even know how
large the Nyairo family is? I will speak for myself and say, If ‘we’ are 400 million rich, how is it that I
am living paycheck to paycheck…, how is it that I work from 6 am to 5 pm to make a living, if my
family are ‘trillionares’ I should be sitty pretty. To say this is beyond absurd, is an understatement,
and the only reason ‘the others’ would make a statement like that is to encourage hate in an already
troubled Eldoret town.

highly ethical person in giving out your comments….otherwise a check measure should be put in
place to filter out informations that carry no moral intention. About the wealth of individuals….well I
suggest that we should atleast start with ourselves first before guessing and speculating on other
peoples wealth. For me I guess I have accumulated close to 20,000

Hi Guys,

I have read some of your posts and i would like to bring in some sanity to the discussion. I strongly
advocate for coming up with a Kenya Rich List with profiles of each candidate. We should all
contribute and amend what has already been put up.

I for one have researched on info e.g. NSE’s Top 100 millionaires and yes, the likes of Paul Wanderi
Ndungu, feature prominently. Historical money like that of the Kenyattas should also make its way
into the list as well as political & wealer dealer money from the Saitoti’s, Pattni’s, Biwott’s, Kafogos
etc.

No forgetting the new money coming in from the likes of the Somens, Makatiani, John Mwangi’s,
Sam Kairo etc.

I would be pleased to contribute my 2cents on who i think are the top 100 richest and would like you
guys to include profiles on what they own, how they made their cash etc.

Nyairolet on July 11, 2008 at 9:14 pm

I think this a dangerous game you guys are playing that is not taking into account any kind of facts.
Do you realise that these folks have kids and this could place not just the person listed but their
children in harms way? If you have never had your car jacked at gun point and have to beg the thief to
let you get your kids from the back seat, if you have never been jacked again at gun point and thrown
out like garbage in Karura forest meanwhile having the theives discuss very calmly whether to spare
your life or not, its hard to understand what most might see as amusement, may be dead serious to
someone else.

I’m sure this site was created to have valid debate on issues, but I would ask that unless you have hard
facts, please refrain from using someone’s name.

What starts out as a valid discussion turns into something nasty. My interest’s been piqued though…

The debate is adorable but wealth can’t be appreciated by the public – us, if one can not account
for it and show some social responsibility. In Africa particulary this part of the East you can’t be
gainfully wealthy without political links trust me Moi & Kulei, Kabogo& Mwau, Kibaki & Mt. Kenya
Mafias. the list is enormous Remember the dude who wired some billions from the states to some
local bank and Amos wako incollabo with other gova were on his case. So Some peice of advice f ur
as young as I am and have prospects of being in the list in the future which can only be by Kuangukia

Moi is worth $12 billion, he bought $2billion worth of propertes in Germany in 1989, when the Berlin
Wall fell, only the 3 hotels in London are worth over $1billion.

Phillip Moi owns the Hyatt in Portman Square, London, formerly the Churchill Hotel, it has 1000
rooms, and per room it is worth at least £500,000, this is where the Goldenberg money went.

Moi has trading screens at his house in Kabarak, where hundreds of millions of dollars of currency
and commodity trades are done on a daily basis, Merali helped him set it up.

Merali is worth at least $100million. Somaia worth minus, it was all Moi’s money. Pattni is also worth
nothing, it was all Phillip Moi’s money, Grand Regency was his commision for stealing nearly
$1.5billion, and even that was taken away from him, he was a “houseboy” for Phillip, I know him
quite well. Biwott is worth more than $1.5billion, and Kenyatta Family the same. Kibaki is probably
around $400-500million.

I know all this because I was close to Moi’s son, thankfully I refused to do business the way he
wanted me to, I have enough of my own money and dignity, without having to resort to stealing or
acting as someone’s briefcase carrier, that is where family dignity comes in. I have not come back to
Kenya, due to the corrupt practices, although I was born there and love the country and people.

Alan:

People like Moi don’t deal with Kenya Shillings. They deal with dollars. Did you read the Kroll
report, which I attached above?

I recall watching a BBC interview with uhuru kenyatta where he was specifically asked how much his
family was worth and he painfully managed to mutter out the words: “oh…about $10 million dollars”,
which was a complete lie. It’s probably 40 times that amount.

Read the Kroll report above. You’ll be astounded how much money these people have stolen.

Hi

its nice to see that the new programme to introduce internet into mental institutions including mathare
has really taken its toll, the person who said that moi is worth $12 bilion is trying to pull a fast one on
us, if u go to forbes.com, the 12th richest guy in the world is worth $11.5 billion, so unless you are
trying to tell us that moi is the 11th richest guy in the world, u must be crazy.

i dont want to say that i may know who the richest guys are but i believe the moi’s and the biwotts
must be somewhere on top of the list.

let me say of those i know, first of, kabogo’s wife is harun mwau’s daughter, i know it coz i know the
oplitician personally, and secondly, his choppers are not leased, i have seen documentation of
certificates of airworthiness of those aircraft and they are all kabogos. they are even registered under
his name, and they even have kenyan aircraft registration numbers, u cant lease a plane from s.a and
give it kenyan numbers.

the dude, as per my approximates, must be worth close to $ 800,000,000 (eight hundred million)
ama?

country.

I have been looking and rich lists in America and Europe and if you compare them to ours you will be
surprised to learn the obvious difference.

In America and Europe, the POLITICIANS dont even make the top 200 on the rich list, but have a
look at ours, Its bloody full of POLITICIANS.

The only explanation I think is our MWANAINCHI money is what is making our POLITICIANS
rich.

People, people…some objectivity and possitivity here. Other countries have Rich Lists, why the hell
can’t Kenya? The richlist will serve as a foundation that will determine the character of money makers
through kenya’s history. Obviously the first post independence guys were politicians but i think
political connections, land, parastatals and the stock exchange will diminish as possible avenues for
catalytic wealth creation. I believe the list will evolve over time to bring in innovators and clear cut
entrepreneurs. I forsee this list being as inspiring as the Forbes List, the Asia 1000 Rich List and many
similar ones.

C’mon, lets stop bickering about who got what where and start coming up with the list. I for one
believe that anyone with less than KES1bn will probably never end up in the top 1000 in Kenya.

Back to work, y’all!!!

head!

Our politicians are our celeb’s…thats why they make the news daily…as for how they mostly end up
with the cash….power politics=political appointments=parastatals & government senior
positions=control as to how budget resource {budget–over 600 Billion} is to be spent and thro which
companies tenders. thats how we can explain guys who have been politicians since the 60′s, who have
never worked for any public or private company yet they are now worth billions……..

Their is a catch….thro the bible or other Holy Bks and the laws of nature this resources will not pass
thro to the forth generation of this “crooks” . Having been mature in the 60′s and with toi’s then, their
forth generation kids must be in their teens or mid to late 20′s and those resources shall now have to
go back somehow….if u are a decendant make your own cash otherwise you are bound to suffer in
many ways …love..health etc.. or setup charities and give the needy ..IDP’s min 10% of whatever u
have inherited. As for us who are not part of those doomed offsprings be prepared to own a piece of
the wealth by being smart upstairs and work hard. dont be tempted to go their way. this will surely
happen in our times.
Other countries ie the states or older states had this kind of people and as stated above they offsprings
are nowhere now. infact some of the ones who stole the most in the 60′s are now suffering in Debt.
come join me in creating a new force…an equity fund and we make our clean cash that can be
maintained thro time…www.eastcoastkenya.blogspot.com

well well well talking of kenyan rich families or pple, think is way, all around the world, the list of
richest pple are normally politicians, eg. at the States, Bill gates was never a senetor, Trump, Oprah,
the darlings… the list is endless, ranging the Bush family thier happen to be not published. What this
means is that, Kenyan leaders took your chance, you childrens education (by keeping reducing
teachers pay), farmers yeld but kept the top cream to themselves. richness is not everything if you fear
God (i am not saying it is bad to be rich, but get it the right way) therefore, i can not view Kenyan list
of richest pple at any time. promises, promises promises but no where to run to but thank God.

God bless Kenya

Alan I am just curious at how you arrived at the figure of Ksh 124Trillion from mentioning US$
1.5billion. If you multiply US$12Billion with an exchange rate of 1$ = 80Ksh you get Ksh 960billion.
It is possible that this guys could have this money. Remember even the Forbes list is not completely
accurate. At the time of his death Mobutu Seseko had US$ 6Billion. With a much bigger Kenyan
economy Moi could indeed have that much. Though I suspect it is more like US$1.2billion.

97.

Moneybags on May 13, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Moi could indeed have that much. Though I suspect it is more like US$1.2billion.

Gideon alone is worth like $700 million dollars according to wikileaks and the kroll report.

Kenyatta has said his networth is about $10 million, but I don’t know if that just includes cash and not
all the properties.

Biwott is probably sitting on a good $500 million dollars if not more.

99.

Anony Kenyan on May 23, 2009 at 2:06 pm

Seek he first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you!

We all go through life not realizing what God’s purpose for designing us….those who make the
millions you talk of and give them away – have figured out the purpose of life (eg. Warren Buffet, Bill
Gates, etc). Those who made that money legally and fairly – will be blessed even more when they
give and use what they’ve been blessed with wisely.

God wants us to enjoy life in this world – but through discovering the purpose he has for us. No matter
what religion you are – you are more blessed by giving. Remember you cannot leave this world with
this wealth! But you can surely leave your family with curses and generational issues, even if you’ve
left them with your wealth.

Discover your purpose in this world and you will not only be happy but eternally successful!

shocked. I’m pretty sure you will to.

Fisher Island, Fla., and Troy, Mich.

Bharat Desai
56

How’d he get so rich? Desai is the co-founder and CEO of Syntel, a multibillion-dollar information
technology company headquarted in Troy, Mich. The Kenyan-born, Indian-educated Desai was one of
the early technology outsourcing leaders and divides his time between Troy, Fisher Island, Mumbai,
and Syntel’s new 1,800-acre campus in Pune, India. Desai has a fortune estimated at $1 billion.

Roy;

That’s an interesting catch. It looks like Desai and his family fled Kenya when he was 11 for India.

According to this link, his father thought that they’d be trouble in kenya for Indians once africans took
over the country at independendence and he decided to move his family to india.

I don’t know if his father was just a racist or if he was smart. I think maybe a little bit of both.

given this background, I don’t know if he is really kenyan. He is a u.s. citizen and probably has indian
citizenship as well and he grew up in india, not kenya.

they r very small, it seems like u have not seen money in your life.

i am one of the very rich guys compared to those figures, and i know over 100 people that are much
richer than me.

but definately, kenyatas family is the richest in kenya, its got a lot of wealth in 1st world countries.

moi’s family is also very rich, he owns the largest farm in Western australia. $1.2billion is just close to
its value, imagine the wealth in kenya.

people kenya has a lot of money, the best way to make it is thru production of agricultural goods.

land is very cheap, start farms u will b rich in a few years. this will drive out food scarcity and also
create a lot of jobs.

Kenya being a developing country,we have come far. with the presence of sub-melitia groups
like;MNGK,Kamjeshi, chinkororo, sungusungu, and many more,no one will like to be on sportlight
about wealth. No wonder people like Amos Wako are keeping money in foreign countries.
up coming entrepreneurs like the Bridges Family are an example how to earn money honestly through
smart thinking.

For those who think that making such a list is a waste of time, think again. This is the way to go.
When we know who owns what, we can ask questions of how they got it……plus its inspiring!

Great work Kenyan Entrepreneur

Google: Kenya’s ‘Silicon Valley’ tycoon, Roque Thuo (Definitely Kenyan born and bred!) of RfWel
Technologies. Met him at a talk at Harvard Business School. He lives in the richest part of Phoenix
Arizona in John McCain’s neighborhood!

kindly note kabogo is not that wealthy ,he’s just flashy,10years ago kabogo worked as an accountant
in mombasa called tototo, a small women group cloth dyeing help group,he started importing cars
after getting loan from kcb ruiru branch and his fathers farm as security,he also stole from that place
he was working and they sacked him,at that time he was staying at mukalla house in nyali renting
twice is father’s farm was close to being auctioned,he was broke and a friend of his called george used
to clear goods for mwau and while in nairobi he made a mistake of taking kabogo along when going to
see mwau the next thing kabogo who was still holding a mobile phone form tototo industries the
NGO,outplayed george on mwau and mwau started trusting kabogo ,he introduced him to kingways
motors and kabogo started clearing for them too,and others .

kabogo stole alot from kra by using double checks from oil payments ,and he’s not married to mwau’s
daughter he has a long time wife and two sons first born kamau.he is aproxy till today of mwau and
thats why you pple think he is very rich ,kabogo even started smoking he never used to,he had a
girlfriend called lucy lau who is married now,he is worth about 10m US mostly from mwau’s contacts
e.g nakumatt kingsway cfs at athi river and so forth.thank you i know him well we ate together we still
do.

i am shocked at how naive most of u guys r! ati Moi is worth $12bn. from where? u r tossing around
billions of $’s as if they were shillings. let’s put things into perspective. lets say moi stole sh. 10bn
each year he was president. for the 24 years he was in power, this amounts to sh. 240bn. which is only
$3bn! moreover, how could moi steal $12bn from kenya, one of the poorest countries in the world.
even sani abacha did not manage such a feat, yet nigeria is world’s #5 as an oil exporter!

For those who claim to ‘know’ some of these people personally and have access to some of their

its not that easy.It entails searching the companies registry to know who owns what
company;searching the land registries to know who owns what land and in what names;searching
KRA to find out on their tax returns-assuming that we are dealing with “clean people”;searching to
find who owns what in foreign countries;etc, etc you need the cash of Carlos Slim and the time like
idlers have to conduct a meaningful research. I tend to feel that there are wealthy people who will
rarely hit the headlines-the Triton guy,the Meralis of Kenya too.How I wish Mariga signed up for Man
City.He would have easily made to the top in terms of earnings per month/week-with clean money.

i know for somebody to have come up with an idea of visiting this site, he/she must have a certain
attitude about money. it is true that we all dream to be wealth come tomorrow. this guys listed here
might have got their money in ways which we may not approve but we should all forge ahead and
plan our ways out of poverty. I like the guy who said something to do with DONALD THRUMP. He
made money by an art of Discipline. If you have to succeed in anything, you have to be disciplined
with money invested.
I was at this site last year(2009) and got motivated. Truly i have seen my bank account grow fat.if we
all take the positive outlook, of this site, we wont be blaming each other tomorrow that so & so is a
thieve. well they will live all the money behind but ask yourself, will your children benefit from what
they left behind? it pays to work hard to get what you want.
God Bless Kenya.
God Bless you.

10 Billionaires and 40 million beggers is more like what JM Kariuki (Himself a millionaire) would
say today. The fight and bile should not be between who has and who does not have but each
individual focusing on improving his circumstances despite the prevailing cirmcumstances. We spend
too much of our time trying to fight guys with big money instead of spending the same time earning
some quality experience in relevant skills that give us an edge

YOUR ESTIMATES ARE VERY WRONGH AND MISLEADING HOW kenyatta ‘s family cant be
worth 700m, considering they own 10% of the land roughly the size of nyanza province they also own
brookside ,and other companies plus several flats in london you need to do some more research before
you come up with such fallacies

well well well talking of kenyan rich families or pple, think is way, all around the world, the list of
richest pple are normally politicians, eg. at the States, Bill gates was never a senetor, Trump, Oprah,
the darlings… the list is endless, ranging the Bush family thier happen to be not published. What this
means is that, Kenyan leaders took your chance, you childrens education (by keeping reducing
teachers pay), farmers yeld but kept the top cream to themselves. richness is not everything if you fear
God (i am not saying it is bad to be rich, but get it the right way) therefore, i can not view Kenyan list
of richest pple at any time. promises, promises promises but no where to run to but thank God.
Haiya wasees iko nini… wahindis and jungu kenyans are missing from the list. Kwa mfano are the
Leaky’s kenyans? what about kina Sarit Center, I&M wasees. I know kama mdosi anaishi Karen and
he doesn’t feature in a news scandal there is no way the guy is rich. huh?! Nasikia kuna wakenya
wako na mall huku Mneapolis, na wao Je?
U R the biggest fool to publish those figures.
but definately, kenyatas family is the richest in kenya, its got a lot of wealth in 1st world countries.

Not interested in the policians who have stolen to make it big how about a list of businessmen who
have made it big excluding politicians it would help to give the kenya youth hope that if you
implement a business and make it happen it can work.
Put a list of people who bring hope i must admit i read the forbes and im perplexed that there is alot
that life has to offer. I admire the entreprenuers of the west but again that is where we are headed and
we still have many clean businessmen who have made it!! Not politicians coz they are thieves not
businessmen!!

it always has,..its a shame that its the “leaders” who bring out the worst in our county, not the people,..
p.s-we are wasting time on figuring out who is richer than the other,.why not try figuring out who is
poorer?ohh,is “Kenya entrepreneur” scared that the amount of people are going to exceed this

In the 90s Moi was the 2nd richest president in the world after Mobutu. His and his
cronie’s(biwott, saitoti etc) stolen money amounts to between 1b$ and 5b$. I.e. enough to pay off all
our external debts. The reason we will never get help from the west to retrieve it is that they want to
keep earning interest(quite high due to kenya’s poor credit rating) from their loans as well as the
investment in their economies that the money brings. We may claim to be developing though most
kenyan’s(over 50%) living standards are same as to western standards(quite poor) when the industrial
revolution was begining. We are a country of poor people controlled by a few filthy rich collaborators.
To be considered rich in the west you must be worth at least 5m$ otherwise you are upper middle
class.

Merali’s two companies have issued profit warnings. He is blaming it on post-election violence, but
why do I think it’s more than that? The CEO of his Sameer Group of companies has effectively been
fired and because Merali is an astute businessman, he quickly replaced him with another Kikuyu.

Now, I don’t want people here to start hyperventilating about this statement. If Raila had become the
president, Merali would have picked a Jaluo. It’s the way the game is played.

So, what’s happening to Merali? Everyone knew that he run Firestone with Moi and everyone knew
that when Moi was in power, it was the Indians who were running those businesses, not people like
Moi and Kulei (they just got their cut at the end of the month). Is it getting harder for Merali to
extract political favors or is it just pure business as he says? (post-election violence, rising fuel costs, a
more competitive economy, etc, etc).

The Sameer Group website doesn’t give a lot of information about who he is. There’s also very little
information on other members of the management team. Too many Kenyan “businessmen” operate in
secret and it can’t be because they’re all scared of the political winds. There’s a shadiness about
business in Kenya and I think it explains why the country is still so poor. When I look at the business
moguls in India, it’s refreshing to see how open they are about their businesses. They talk about how
they did it, they’ll tell you where they went to school, they’ll give lengthy interviews about their
business practices and you can only do this if you have made your money fair and square (& this
criticism is not just about Merali, it applies to 90% of the business people in Kenya).

Everyone has said that in order to reduce poverty, you have to create new wealth (this is what the
Indians did with their outsourcing industry). You can’t reduce poverty through the redistribution of
wealth. However, what’s been happening in Kenya for the last 40 years is very strange: Nobody talks
and what that tells me is that you have a few well connected players who are grabbing what they can
get and then just hiding it. This is not how a “real” economy is supposed to function. In a real
economy, you are supposed to create new wealth by creating new industries in manufacturing,
technology and other things like that, but you don’t see that happening in Kenya. It’s not a real
economy because nothing is being created. Kenya is an agrarian society, which is fine because people
need to eat, but at some point, you have to start producing something, especially if you don’t have oil
or diamonds.

So, someone like Merali, is nothing more than a distributor. He doesn’t make the tires. They are
made in China. All he is doing is getting a hook-up from Moi that allows him to sell tires to farmers
in Kenya. Do you see why these political hook-ups are so crucial? Chris Kirubi gets the hook-up
to distribute bic-pens. Those pens are not made in Kenya. They are made in China. Biwott gets the
hook-up to distribute oil, but the oil doesn’t come from Kenya.

So, what the heck’s my point? if you want to get rich in Kenya, you better find a way to get the
political hook-up so that you can become a distributor. Since we don’t make anything, you have to
import and distribute; And of course, hope that the farmers keep making money because they are the
main purchasers of these imported goods. It’s an agrarian economy afterall.

KE,

Long time since iwrote something, i’ve been awfully busy the last couple of weeks.

about Merali, he was in the UK In his youth, he’s a chartered accountant by profession. he came back
to kenya and worked for a car dealrship which he eventually bought from the mzungu owner- i guess
one of the first buy-outs in kenya.

that’s how he started. however one cannot discount the political connections he’s had as one of his
assets. He broke off from firestone to start his own yana tires. something tells me that was/is a very
tough competitive business.

about the CEO guy he fired, was it the kimani guy ? if so I’m not surprised.

maybe he hadn’t fully apprciated the extent of the comptitive business nature involving tires.

Tru, most managemnt and directors profiles are so shallow -basicaly because there’s really not much
to these guys academically or professionally. ask harun mwau how he made so much money ? it’s an
open secret……

Maybe he is a Patel, I hear Indian Patels are real good businessmen

BigBen on June 8, 2008 at 6:24 am

Nashuad Merali and his senior management have failed to recognise three key things in modern world
business:

1. Speed

2. Simplicity

3. Chindia – China – India Effect

Perhaps he ought to get some lessons from Lakshmi Mittal.

4.
kenyanentrepreneur on June 8, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Big Ben:

If Naushad Merali has relied on a corrupt system for the last 20 years, he will never catch up to a
Lakshmi Mittal. You can’t become a world billionaire by relying on corrupt african politicians.

Buy any shares of meralis companies at your own risk. He has always left on time, leaving other
shareholders suffering. Whatever he sells aint good for investment, what he has kept was not by
choice, and what he has for keeps is what seems to be working. Sacking is evidence something is
damn wrong. And since he has the insider knowledge, no man cries for nothing…..about his
smartness, just look at Nairobishops now and compare them with Mois time, im sure you see the
difference, and now that KRA is working very hard. It was not smartnes, after all where are they now!
It was just political connections and the fact that they were paying no taxes! Mugo Kabati managed to
turn East African Cables around after it was bought from these crooks. Im sure Merali cried after he
saw what that young guy did to the company……. I would have hired him instead of selling! Theyre
not too smart after all. There are many othere unproven guys who are Kabatis, all thy need is
opportunity, and companies that can handle their adrenaline!

KE,
Either you are one of the NSIS agents or you are one of the agents of the propaganda machine.First,
Of Merali, I have been to Firestone/Yana factory and have seen the tires been made(Discounting the
fact that he is just a broker). Another point, lets assume that he is a broker, he has to be completely
daft to spend so much money in employing people including many Kikuyus (Even kimani should have
advised him that) on his payroll. i think we should give credit where it is due irrespective of whether
he is Indian or Mzungu or kalenjin or Kikuyu.
As for political favours there are many kenyans (across all tribes which includes Kikuyus too) who
have taken it for business growth.
Case in example – Jinmah Mbaru – Chairman of Dyer and Blair and Chairman of NSE -no wonder
Nyagah and Francis Thuo went down – both of them KIKUYUS.
Transparency – Transcentury, Equity, British American – Kikuyus! what transparency are you talking
about there – Amos Kimunya and Dela rue!. this society is full of it.

We have to get the ethnicity factor behind us and accuse or reward the individuals as per the acts. First
and foremost they are Kenyans.
Please lets get sober and realize there is lot in Kenya we can achieve and if we keep on playing the
vicious game of tribes we will have a repeat of what happened earlier this year and unfortunately ther
might be no KOFI ANNAN then. wake up people!!!

Richard:

You must not have read my post clearly because I did say that many people (besides Merali) have
benefitted from this corrupt system.

But let me ask you a question: are the tires actually manufactured in Kenya or just ASSEMBLED in
Kenya?

Merali’s firestone business was partly affected by the flood of new imported tires into the country and
he might have had trouble adjusting to this new competition.

8.
Indian on August 25, 2008 at 8:28 am

KE,

You really need to know your facts before reporting. You need to have proof of your allegations.

And how the hell do you ASSEMBLE a tyre???!!!!! You seem like an educated person. Tyres are
made from rubber and poured into moulds, there is no assembly of parts involved!!
In future, please make your comments after adequate research an proof.

i am Mohammed son of Naushad and brother to sameer.

The aim of our company is not to be stuck on pocketing profits and doing business unjustly, we aim to
maximize growth of our companies and expand and create more firms in different market segments
such as we are trying to do in Europe based on our successful East African experiences.

10.
Mohamed on November 12, 2009 at 1:08 am

Gentlemen, please try to be honest to your self, Naushad Merali is a Businessman, he came up by his
own effort, unlike other Political figures who grabs the other people business and become rich,
Naushad Merali has built his Empire, He is a proper Kenyan(Mwanyeji) not Naturalized citizien, he is
the son of the well known Businessman going back in 1800, He has provided employment to
KENYAN and International citizens, he has brought Technology in Kenya, so let us support him
rather than talking evils.

11.

Rob on December 15, 2009 at 4:02 am

I agree with you, Mohamed.

Let us give credit where it is due. Mr. Merali is a highly respectable businessman with strong ethics
and a high level of respect for the people that work for him. He treats each person like a member of
his Family.

Jealousy brings no positive results. Gentlemen, I would suggest you learn from this man to make
yourselves more succesful in all your endeavours and in all areas of your life.

superstore.Chandaria wants to make kenya a great business hub so guys do not become racists or
tribalists. He is our Mhindi who loves Kenya so much.so give him credit.

Who is this man Merali?

Naushad Merali:
Naushad Merali has emerged as a go-getting, aggressive, witty deal maker who will stop at
nothing to seal a seemingly impossible deal all odds notwithstanding. His business endeavors
has seen him cut a niche in the Kenyan market and beyond as the most entrepreneurial
business mogul in the league that can be equated to the American Donald Trump, Bill Gates,
Warren Buffet in Kenyan standards.
Merali is respected by all for his seemingly insatiable appetite to get wherever he wants and
would scale even the seemingly insurmountable odds to realize his dreams. Following his
footsteps, his son has also emerged as a go getter, like his father, with the academic
credentials to crown it all in business.
Sameer Group:
Merali has formed a large group of companies under the Sameer Group umbrella that are
involved in across section of the economic sectors as agriculture, construction, Energy and
Power, Export Processing Zone (EPZ), Information Technology, Telecommunications, Finance
and Transport.
Some of the companies including Sasini Tea (Agriculture), Eveready (Energy) amd Sameer
Africa (Transport) are listed at the Nairobi Stock Exchange.

Companies:
The wide array of companies in his portfolio include:
Sasini Tea and Coffee Ltd: This is a public listed company quoted on the Nairobi Stock
Exchange with over 2,000 hectares under production and represents the Sameer Group’s
interests in Tea, Coffee, Forestry, Dairy, Horticulture and Tourism.
Tea is grown by a Sasini subsidiary, Kipkebe Limited, which operates two major facilities
(Kipkebe and Keritor) and exports tea to Egypt, UK, Pakistan and the Middle East.
The company's coffee plantations are located at altitude in central Kenya with facilities in
Kiambu and Nyeri Districts ( Mweiga Estate)
Dairy and Horticulture Sasini's dairy division produces milk and flavored yoghurts, as well as
producing milk for sale to the food industry in general. Its horticulture division is growing,
producing such vegetables as peas and corn.
Equatorial Commercial Bank: It began in 1983 as a Finance company and converted into a
commercial bank in 1995. The bank is now growing its consumer banking operations. Dimension
Data:
Swift Global Kenya: Provides personal and business connectivity.
Kenya Data Networks: This is a private data and infrastructure provider in the communications
sector.
Ryce East Africa: This provides complete transportation solutions to Kenya.
Yansam Motors: This is the other motor vehicle company in the Sameer Group Car Park that
was initially launched to source and supply other popular brands of motor vehicles to cater to
the ever increasing demands of the market. Yansam Motors has diversified into agricultural
business by acquiring sole franchise rights to market the Iranian ITMCO brand of tractors and
farming implements in Kenya. The company also has an engineering division.

Celtel Kenya: Celtel builds and operates communications networks in Africa.

Sameer Africa: This formerly under the name Firestone East Africa. This was established in
Kenya in 1969 as a joint venture between Firestone Tyre and Rubber Company of the USA and
the Government of Kenya with the aim of producing tyres for the Kenyan and the East African
market.

H Young:This is one of East Africa 's leading construction company. The company's design and
manufacturing activities relate to all sectors including Telecommunications, Mining, Power
Generation, Petroleum Industry, Agricultural Sector (sugar, tea), Process Industries, Cement,
Infrastructure (roads, water supply) among others.

Eveready East Africa: This company was quoted recently at the bourse after successful Initial
Public offering that was oversubscribed. The company was established in 1967 to manufacture
primary batteries.

Sameer Industrial Park: Sameer Industrial Park (SIP) is Kenya’s premier Export Processing Zone
(EPZ).

Dimension Data: Dimension Data was founded in South Africa at the inception of networked
communications. It provides Network Integration, Converged Communications, Security, Data
Centre’s & Storage, Microsoft and Customer Interactive Solutions.

The art of a deal:

With Mr. Merali quest to expand his regional outreach through the various companies, his
networth is way into billions, leads an opulent life and lets his money work for him. His
political connection has also helped him secure business deals with several willing foreign
direct investors. To say the least this guy has mastered the ART OF A DEAL! and would jump in
every time an opportunity presents itself.

At the Nairopbi stock exchange, Merali also invests in a couple of companies and with big
monies involved he can always cut deals for himself with big profit margins to follow.
