Completing the Square

IPad App: Notes

Directions:
1. Students will be given a worksheet with problems containing quadratic equations. The
students will be required to complete the square with these problems.
2. Student will open the app Notes on the IPad.
3. Students will solve each problem one at a time by drawing the quadratic equation pictorially
on the app.
4. Students will be required to draw the process of completing the square using the app.
5. Once done with pictorially representing the quadratic equation, students will be asked to
complete the square algebraically on the worksheet given. This will be required to verify their
work pictorially.
6. At the end of the class students will save their work and email their completed work on
pictorially completing the square. Students can use the Snipping Tool to copy and paste their
work from the app onto a Word document or save the picture onto their IPad and paste to a
document.
7. Students will submit their worksheet with their algebraic work on completing the square at the
end of class as well.
Note: Students will be allowed to collaborate and work with a partner, however, each student
will be required to submit their OWN work. If students submit their work with their partner the
student who submitted the work will receive the credit.
Example

𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 − 9 = 0
𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 = 9
8
( )2 = 42 = 16
2
𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 + 16 = 9 + 16
(𝑥 + 4)2 = 25
1. x2 + 8x – 9 = 0 6. 13x2 + 26x – 52 = 0

2. 2x2 + 10x – 14 = 0

7. 4x2 + 40x -160 = 0

3. 3x2 + 12x – 21 = 0

8. x2 + 6x – 16 = 0

4. x2 + 3x – 9 = 0

9. A farmer has 51 square meters of

land. He wants to plant his crops in a
5. x2 + 5x -14 = 0
rectangle where the width of the
rectangle is 14 meters less than the
length. Find the dimensions of the
rectangle of crops.
10. Consider a perfect square which is equal to a negative number.

(𝑥 − 2)2 = −5

Predict what it would mean if we tried to solve for x.
