You cannot really afford ATMs in Rural India that needs electricity to run. As banks expand to
rural India, there will be a need for more home grown solutions and most importantly, a rural
solution (rugged) to reach out to the segment.

Vortex, an IIT Chennai incubated startup has developed solar powered ATM targeted for
rural India and the solution built with partners works for large banks as well as smaller ones.
The solar powered ATMs consumes less than 10% of the power used by normal ATMs and
has low Capex.

How does Vortex ATM works?

Normally ATMs use a complex Cash Dispensing Mechanism where the cassettes are
horizontal and at bottom of the ATM and cash is moved from the cassette through a
conveyor belt upwards to dispense cash in the cash presenter in ATM. Also they use CRT
monitors in many models as well as full-fledged PC boards consuming power.

Vortex has developed a very elegant and innovative Cash Dispensing Mechanism, protected
by patents, that does not use any conveyor belt and the cassette is mounted vertically and
in the top half of the ATM. This makes the notes dispensed from cassette to travel only a
short distance to the cash presenter in ATM. So, it uses much smaller and low-power
consuming motors and hence able to operate under very less power. Vortex ATM also uses
lower-power consuming processors and LCD displays that consume much less power and
Linux as OS.

Low power consumption ensures that the heat generated by Vortex ATM are negligible. Also,
it uses hardened components that can operate under ambient temperatures of up to 50 deg
C. These ensure that Vortex ATMs can operate without any air-conditioners up to 50 deg C,
which feature is not offered by any other ATM.
The Vortex ATMs are certified for most ATM Switches and hence can be connected to the
bank’s ATM Switch in the central location and it continues to perform in the CBS (Core
Banking System) environment. For banks on TBA (Total Branch Automation), wanting to
provide Any Branch Banking (ABB) without upgrading to a CBS, Vortex ATMs can be used
along with Olive ATM Switches (Multi option)

The startup has raised funds from Oasis fund, Aavishkar and Ventureast.

NFS banks to pay 80 paise per ATM transaction

Sudeep Jain / Mumbai May 28, 2010, 0:27 IST

Banks on the National Financial Switch (NFS), the largest ATM network in the country, will now have to pay a fee
of 80 paise per transaction. The move is, however, unlikely to change ATM withdrawal charges for customers.
In comparison, members of other networks such as Mastercard and Visa pay 10-15 paise per transaction. The
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) took charge of NFS from the Institute for Development and
Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) in January this year.

IDRBT is a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), while NPCI is owned by six commercial banks, including
State Bank of India.
Since it is a for-profit corporation, NPCI had proposed to charge Re 1 per transaction from January 1, but banks
protested this was too high.
After negotiations, a fee of 80 paise was decided, which bankers feel is still high.
“There is a wide disparity between what NFS charges and what other networks charge. The fee should not have
been more than 25 paise per transaction,” said a senior executive of a private sector bank.
NFS handles an average of 2.5 million transactions per day and has 37 member banks which have about 50,000
ATMs among them.
Incidentally, the switching charge, which was Rs 2 per transaction until 2007, was waived in December 2007 to
bring down ATM interchange charges. The switching fees come as an additional burden to banks who already
have to pay whenever a customer uses another bank’s ATM. In April 2009, RBI decided to stop charging
customers for third-party transactions.
Banks, on the other hand, incurred heavy expenses on such transactions since they had to pay Rs 18 every time
their customer used another bank’s ATM. Previously, this charge was borne by the customer. In October, RBI
allowed banks to charge customers for third-party transactions after they had exhausted their quota of five free
withdrawals.

In this ablog I just want to mention one of the hoax e-mail received. The e-mail
subject as follows:
ICICI ATM card on danger!
E-mail message as follows:
ICICI ATM / Debit cards can be used at SBI ATMs to withdraw money and most shocking thing is, it
does not ask for your PIN**. Even if it asks for pin and if u cancel it, it goes on to the next screen and
enables you to withdraw cash. This security vulnerability was shown live on IndiaTV news channel at
SBI ATM in Hyderabad. So please take utmost care of your ICICI ATM / Debit cards to avoid any such
misuse. Please forward this to as many people as you know…
This is a chain mails, that means who ever receives that mail then forward to the group of friends. It
is intend to damage the name of specific bank, in this case the victim is ICICI Bank.
After reading the mail, I have googled it to know the facts, first result which I got is ICICI Bank
Online. It says as follows:
Dear Customer,
We understand that there are misleading e-mails being sent to ICICI Bank customers informing them that
they can withdraw money from SBI ATMs using their ICICI Bank Debit / ATM Cards without using their
Personal Identification Numbers (PINs).
We would like to clarify here, that there is no problem with the ICICI Bank ATM / Debit Card. We have
checked the transactions of ICICI Bank cards on ATMs of SBI. The ATMs do ask for the PIN to be
entered by the customer.
We reassure you that ICICI Bank declines all ATM transactions coming without a PIN or with an incorrect
PIN.
We affirm that all ICICI Bank Debit /ATM cardholders can safely use their cards across all ICICI
Bank ATMs as well as at all participating ATMs of the VISA/NFS network.
We request you to forward this note to all those who may have sent you misguiding e-mails in this regard.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
ICICI Bank Ltd.

Please don’t forward such mails without the official proof on it. That will
damage a company’s brand quality.

State Bank of India to Deploy 300 Solar-Powered ATMsSolar

ATMs said to consume 100 watts of power and to require no air conditioning.

In India's first large-scale rollout of solar ATMs, State Bank of India plans to install 545 sun-
powered ATMs across semi-urban and rural India. More than 300 will be solar-powered.
Vortex's solar-powered Gramateller Duo ATMs were developed in collaboration with IIT
Madras to be low power consuming ATMs designed for semi-urban and rural areas.

A conventional ATM consumes about 1,000 watts of power and requires an air-conditioned
environment — another 1,500 watts — for functioning. Thus, a conventional ATM consumes
about 1,800 units of power every month.

Vortex says its solar-powered ATMs consume less than 100 watts of power and do not
require air conditioning, thus consuming less than 72 units per month. This indicates a
savings of 1, 728 units per month when compared to a conventional ATM installation, which
translates to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 18,500 kg per year.
"With an ATM penetration of about 0.04 per 1000 people in India, there is a huge need for
rural ATMs," noted V Vijay Babu, CEO of Vortex Engineering, in a statement.

Once you’ve arrived in India, you’ll want to find an ATM in short order. Money flows like water
through tips, taxis, buses, food and hotels. Many businesses will accept US currency for payment
but try to avoid this as hassling over an agreed exchange rate can be tiresome. ATM’s typically offer
the standard exchange rate.
Recommended Banks:
Canara Bank

State Bank of India

Troublesome Banks:
Punjabi National Bank
Canara Bank Logo

Both banks accept my cards with no hassles. The ATM locations are 99% operational as opposed to
the smaller, local banks whose machinery is often times out of service. Both banks only charge $2
transaction fees, a bargain compared to just 4-5 years ago. And a big plus, both banks have
branches throughout the country. I’m sure to find one or the other even in the most remote towns.

A majority of ATM locations provide guard service posted just outside the door. There is nothing to
be suspicious about.

If your card(s) doesn’t work at the selected bank’s ATM, do not fret. Most likely their system is not
part of your bank’s system. Simply seek out another bank, or one of the two recommended above,
before contacting your bank for troubleshooting.

Most locations offer one machine per enclosed room. Indian courtesy is to wait outside until any
customers inside are finished.

State Bank of India Logo

State Bank of India (SBI) machines are a little quirky upfront. Slide your card into the flashing light
slot, hold for a second and then remove. If done correctly, you’ll be prompted to enter your PIN. If
done incorrectly, an error message will display and the machine will in short time reset to the default
screen.

1. Both banks ask for your PIN.

2. For cash withdrawals, press withdrawal.

3. Next you’ll be asked which account to withdraw from. Select “Current”, not checking, not savings.

4. Enter amount. Both banks allow up to Rs 10,000 maximum withdrawal each time. Canara used to
cap out higher but has since brought down their limit.

5. Retrieve your cash, receipt and card (Canara only).
