process leakage into cooling towers

Good morning,

Manzoni, Matteo i've a problem with a process leakage into a cooling tower;

the tower is an 8 cell with 2400 m3 of water, the RR is 6000 m3/h;

the leakage is made of butane and traces of H2S and ammonia, for this reason i've problem to mantein free chlorine. With the normal dosing pump, I never reach free
chlorine.

to stop the process leakage it is necessary to stop the whole plant but the customer does not want to.

so this kind of situation could last for months;

for mantein the cost of treatment low, i utilize biocide Nalco 73500 or Nalco 77352 once a week (friday for the weekend) while during the week i make a shot of sodio
hypochlorite;

we are forbidden to use biodetergents like 8506 or Nalco 77550 because we can not create visible foam.

during the day i make shots (3 or 4 of 150 liters each) of sodio hypochlorite to try to keep free chlorine for 1 hour and half in the morning and the same in the evening.

do you have any suggestion for me?

kind regardes

Matteo,

How important is water conservation to your customer? If allowable, you can minimize the concentration of the butane going back to the tower by blowing down directly off
the outlet of the exchanger. Hopefully there is a bleeder valve or something that will allow the pipe-fitters to install a line that runs down to the sewer. This will help to some
degree. Make sure you account for the increase in all chemical demand due to the blowdown rate.

Hi Matteo,

I agree with Tom's idea about finding a bleeder to blowdown directly from that exchanger.

Also, there are many health and environmental effects of this process leak. Has the refinery environmental group completed any testing for hydrocarbon vapors or H2S at
Del Bonta, Matthew the tower? Up at the fan shrouds? The leak could be creating a hazardous environment around the tower. This could help increase the urgency of the repair.

Also... do you have corrosion coupons installed at this tower? Or any online corrosion monitoring? THe H2S, combined with no microbio treatment, could likely lead to
increased corrosion rates. This could be another way to convince the customer the leak needs to be stopped immediately.

Best wishes,

Matt

Hi, Matteo!

I dosed the ST40 which includes hypochlorite in

Chernov, Mikhail
a volume of 300 kg per system with a volume of

9000 m3. The system was clean as it was at the

power station and cooled the turbine. When

applying this volume, St 40 within 3-4 hours of

chlorine reached 1.5 mg / l within 5 hours

after the start of dosing. But After 6 hours

after the start of dosing, the chlorine dropped

to zero. Even when performing an analysis of

free chlorine on a colorimeter, it flies out of

the cell. The test must be done at the sampling

point. I recommend to check how to do the test.
