Lesson Plan 1 Andrew Foote

OBJECTIVE:
Students will demonstrate proper breathing technique through their use of an external breathing
apparatus.

PROCEDURES:
• Teacher will explain the importance of breathing in proper sound production (air drives
notes)
• Teacher will utilize balloon as visual representation of lungs filling with air
• Teacher will distribute balloons to students
• Students will practice breathing on counts, exhaling into the balloon
• Teacher will inflate and tie off balloon at approximately 3-4 liters of air
• Students will try to inflate balloon to that level on counts (in for 4, out for 4)
• Students can tie off balloons once they have filled to an appropriate level

ASSESSMENT:
Informal: Teacher will encourage and offer instruction to individual students based on their
needs, praising students with good technique, and noting which students are struggling.

Formal: Teacher will write names of students on their balloons, and allow them to take the
balloons home, to serve as a visual aid.
• Student will be asked to blow on a piece of paper held 12” from their mouth for 8 counts
at 90bpm, sustaining the air flow throughout.
• Grading will be based upon length of time paper is moved from air:
o 8 counts-A
o 6-7 counts-B
o 4-5 counts-C
o 3 or fewer counts- D
• Student will repeat this task two additional times
• Teacher will drop lowest score, average two duration scores for final grade
