SOMA HIGH INTERPRETATION: If SOMA is increased and CREA is within the reference interval, early
kidney disease is likely. Unlike CREA, SOMA is not impacted by lean body mass. Therefore, SOMA Is a
more sensitive indicator of kidney function in poorly muscled animals. Most animals with early kidney
disease have a SOMA between 14-20 ug/dl. Since SOMA increases as kidney function decreases, SOMA
results >=20 ug/dl are typically seen in more advanced disease along with an increased CREA. SOMA
results may be slightly higher (approx. 1 ug/dl) in puppies, kittens, and Greyhounds. Results should be
interpreted in light of other findings. If both SOMA and CREA are increased, kidney function is likely
impaired. SOMA results may be depressed if marked hemolysis is present. A complete urinalysis should
always be performed to evaluate for inappropriate urine specific gravity, proteinuria and other evidence of
kidney disease.
