Dear Parishioners
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
Traditionally on this weekend, we
remember all who have died in the two
world wars. In recent years, those who have
died in recent and current conflicts are
remembered. Increasingly there are other
aspects of the result of war considered. The
Red Poppy signifies those who have died.
The White Poppy is a peace focused emblem
which has been about some 85 years, but
over-shadowed by the Red Poppy.
The best way we can honour the dead is to
work for peace in our world. A tremendous
task in a world where war is glorified and
non-violent-peace-activists are sometimes
considered traitors or even cowards! We
owe it to the dead, to change attitudes and
opinions. The many thousands who are
injured in war are sometimes forgotten;
there is an attempt this year to consider the
animals that died in the Calvary divisions.
The drama film, War Horse, based on
Michael Morpurgo’s novel is an example.
Throughout his ministry on earth, Jesus
consistently spoke against violence and in
favour of peace. He rejected the claim of ‘an
eye for an eye’; he called us to love our
enemy; he refused the efforts to take him by
force and make him King; he refused
violence to save his own life (he told Peter –
‘put down your sword’) and he reminded us
in a case of conflict to sue for peace while
there was the chance.
In remembering the two World Wars, we
now need to be aware that 90% of the
casualties of war today are civilians,
children, women and men. How war has
changed.
And so to, today’s Gospel: Jesus sits down
opposite the treasury in the Temple in
Jerusalem. Some rich people put in large
amounts; a poor widow put in two small
coins, “all she had to live on”!
Sometimes we feel that our small
contribution in LIFE is insignificant, is of no
consequence! This may be in any aspect of
life – offertory collections, or Retired Clergy
Support – all adds up to a major sum.
In the same way on this Remembrance
Sunday our work for Peace and
Reconciliation is vital even in the face of an
enormous task in a troubled world. Our
positive attitude for peace work; our
support for those for those in peace
movements; our non-violent reactions; our
White Poppy support – all of these supports
are so vital. Our desire to support peaceful
organisations e.g. Veterans for Peace etc. so
many ways we can make a difference. (Have

MONTH OF HOLY SOULS
REMEMBRANCE BOOK
During the month of November, we place the
names of our loved ones in the Remembrance
Book. Please write in the names of the
deceased on the white forms and place it in
the Remembrance Book, and place your
donation for Masses for the Holy Soul in the
envelope provided in the box next to the
table. They will be prayed for during all the
Masses in the coming month. Part of the plan
is that you would attend Mass as much as
possible.
PARISH BAZAAR WITH ‘GRAND DRAW’
SUNDAY 25th NOVEMBER 2016
AS PART OF OUR FUND RAISING EFFORT
A basket for items/goods for the ‘Parish
Bazaar Tombola’ is available by the pillar in
front by the Altar. We would need bottles,
toiletries and items such as unwanted gifts
suitable for the Tombola. Also we will need
cakes for our stall. Everybody is welcome and
we look forward to seeing you there.

 SICK & RETIRED PRIESTS’
Today’s Retiring Collection is for the Sick
& Retired Priests’ Fund.
This ensures our elderly and sick priests are
financially supported in their senior years,
after a lifetime of service. Our priests baptised
us, counselled us in times of sorrow, and
celebrated with us in times of joy. Since we
have received so much from their generosity,
it is now our turn to assist them in their old
age. The fund ensures that their housing,
medical, convalescence, companionship and
spiritual support needs are met.
Please be generous. Most priests retire with
modest means. In later years their ability to
live independently can be adversely impacted
by their declining health, mobility or frailty.

INTERNATIONAL EVENING
We thank all our performing artistes, for their
wonderful performance; all who attended our
International Evening last Sunday and brought
along their delicious national dishes. It was an
evening of true community spirit, which helped
us to raise £588.00.
THANK YOU
To the drivers and helpers who brought the
sick and housebound to the Mass of the
Anointing yesterday. Thanks to our catering
group for supplying the refreshments.

BEREAVEMENT RETREAT

This course offers an insight into the lives of
various women and men in the Bible,
specifically from the Old Testament.

THE ALPHA COURSE
Is a chance to explore the
Christian faith, ask questions

We will try an experiment in using the
center gates as entrance and exit.
On exiting the center gate gives a better
view of traffic and also you can be seen by
the oncoming traffic.
The gates you normally use will be closed.
