Introduction

A work from home or work at home arrangement involves working from home and differs
from the teleworking/telecommuting arrangement in that it does not require that the employee
stay electronically connected to the work location during business hours.

As more and more professionals seek a better work life balance and more companies adopt
flexible policies to accommodate shifting workplace priorities and realities the working from
home option is becoming increasingly viable. Employees see this as an ideal means to remain in
the workforce and continue to be employed thereby maintaining all the tangible benefits of being
part of an established company, while enjoying all the advantages of being based at home. The
option has its potential pitfalls however and below we discuss some of the advantages and
disadvantages of working from home.

Advantages

By working at home we save on many hidden costs associated with going to work. These
include costs of commuting, car wear and tear, fuel, road taxes, parking as well as indirect costs
such as expensive professional wardrobes and the dry-cleaning of those. Often we can also save
on older children’s care arrangements although for younger children it is highly unadvisable to
forgot the childcare arrangement and try to balance close care and supervision with the demands
of the job.

Working online from home doesn’t just relate to timings either although the flexibility to
determine our own work hours to some extent is the most important aspect of this. We can also
determine our lighting, environment, setting, temperature, mood; basically work in the framework
that suits our best and makes us happiest and most productive. Being on your own is the good
part of working from home. Just because you don’t have any colleague around to help you, it
will make the person be more pro active and independent in working on their own. Yes, you
might have technological aspects to help, but still the person will have time to search on their
own. This will help to increase your ability and enhance your skill set as you work on your own.
Right from the emails, the person will be able to be more clear as he is away from his office
desk. Being independent is never bad in doing your job.
Coworkers banter and distractions, unnecessary interruptions, unimportant meetings can all
be avoided if we are safely at home and sealed off in our own environment which we have
barricaded from any possible interruptions.

For many, the physical proximity to family and the convenience of being at home are
tremendously comforting. For parents it can be especially pacifying to know that they are very
near to their children and available should they be needed for any reason. This also applies in the
case of elderly care.

The stress of commuting in bumper-to-bumper traffic at rush hour in many countries is

extremely counterproductive and can lead to disgruntled workers who are already exhausted and
worn before they have even begun their day. This is especially true where the workplace is far
from the office. Other stresses often cited include unfriendly coworkers, a suboptimal work
environment and constant distractions

More productivity removed from the stresses and distractions of the workplace and working
independently in their own preferred environment at their own pace, professionals are often a lot
happier and a lot more productive. Working online at home also having a schedule on their own
is a big stress buster. Sometimes a person might not feel so good or up on mood to work.
Working from home will help them to have their own schedule and taking a break from regular
work will help them increase the productivity. Even if they take a ten minutes break they can
move easily around their house by having a cup of tea or watering their plants will make them
relaxed. This is possible only if they have a schedule of work slot.

Working online at home make our life in better health .Often with long commutes and
anywhere from 1 to 3 hours a day spent getting to and from the workplace both physical and
mental health are adversely impacted; the former as the gym hours are usually the first to go and
the latter due to the stresses associated with both the commute and the workplace itself. By
working at home the commuting time saved enables you to resume physical exercise, to go for a
long walk for example before and after work or to join a local gym.
Better work and better life balance are the aspiration of the modern professional, is often
achieved and tuned to satisfaction through a working at home arrangement, particularly when a
professional has the flexibility to report into the office and work from the office partially as an
option and can fine-tune the arrangement to achieve the most optimal balance.

One of the biggest benefits of working from home is that we can choose any software . There
is no need to go by the rules of our office anymore. Now we can download what like and use
things whenever we feel so. Nobody is there to tell you which software should be used and what
is not allowed and that we think is a wonderful benefit of working on our own.

Disadvantages

There are also some disadvantages to employees working at home, most of these relate to
those working from home for all, as opposed to part, of their working week

Professionals working from home complain of isolation and loneliness given their removal
from their bosses and coworkers and th is can be very depressing to some. Since the workplace
provides a location to meet people and make friends for many, professionals working from home
have to be more creative and resourceful in getting to know people and in staying in touch with
their colleagues

Although office distractions are avoided by working at home, different distractions may
arise. Interruptions from children, work, neighbours, friends, family may be very disruptive and
special efforts must be made to make it known that we are actually working and unavailable for
interruption within work hours despite our physical presence at home.

Working online at home make difficulty in seprating home from work. The temptation to
engage in household matters since we are at home is often very strong. Suddenly may start
feeling obliged to clean the home, do the shopping, the childcare, the cooking, the home finances
and the socializing all while meeting the full requirements of the job too. It is essential to draw
the line between home and work so as to avoid both areas suffering.

Working at home also doesn’t end with simply and easily.Since there is doesnt looking
over our shoulder enforcing strict hours may feel tempted to work endlessly. This pressure to
work endlessly may be compounded by the fact that we feel there are greater expectations made
of you as a home-worker or by self-imposed pressures to prove ourself and our abilities in this
arrangement. Moreover the lack of physical separation between home and work may add to this
pressure to work endlessly.

When we working at home alienated from daily company developments. A lot can change
from day to day in a company and you may find ourself removed from important developments
such as new business ,staff changes, changes in company direction and new competitive
intelligence.

We also can find out the danger of being overlooked for promotions and career
development opportunities is quite real when we are away from the office and other more visible
employees are actively and aggressively vying for them. An open line of communication with
management and regular visits to the office are critical in order to prove our dedication and
commitment to our career and to prevent the out of sight and out of mind syndrome.

Working from home is not suitable to everyone and it aso need high self discipline. It takes a
lot of dedication, self-control and discipline to motivate ourself to persevere in working at home
alone over the long run without succumbing to the distractions and losing drive and momentum.
Often a partial arrangement where we report into the office once or twice a week is the optimal
arrangement as it allows for close interaction with colleagues and supervisors and ensures you
remain in touch with company developments while still permitting you the comfort and
convenience of working from home.

Working at home make security problem in our work. There might be some kind of risk in
sharing or transferring information away from office. So working from home might lead to
information security risks at times. Sometimes this might be the reason to deny work from home
options to the employers.
Another sad part about working at home is that we don’t stay active all the time as a result of
which you become very lazy person. That actually happens to a lot of people who work at home.
Not only do they become all lethargic but also end up putting on weight. If working at home for
us is a compulsion, we would suggest to spend at least one hour on exercise every day and be
careful of what you eat otherwise you could end up putting on a lot of weight.

One of the worst things from working at home is that there is nobody to help us. We will have
to work and help ourself the whole time. There will be nobody to reach out to us or be our staff.
You have to handle all work and assignments on own. In that way have to make sure have done
that well. People always need help from someone or the other while they are working and that is
unfortunately something you will not be getting at work so be careful of that before making your
final decision.

Conclusion

Working from home has both advantages as well as disadvantages equally. It depends upon
the person majorly to handle their professional life in a very good manner. It is in the employee’s
hand to choose the right thing for us as well the organization depending upon the pros and cons.
