A steel column is subjected to factored axial load of 1100 kN. It is of 5m


1 height, hinged at both ends and restrained against buckling at mid-height 16 marks
about weaker axis. Design the section.

A tie member of a roof truss consists of ISA 90 x 90 x 8. The angle is


connected to a 10mm gusset plate by means of 3 bolts of 22mm diameter at a

pitch of 80mm c/c in one line. Find the tension capacity of the member. Take
end distance = 40mm.

Design a double angle tension member connected on each side of a 8mm


3 thick gusset plate, to carry an axial factored load of 200kN. Use 16mm 16 marks
diameter bolts.

Two steel plates of 16mm thickness are to be connected using a single cover
4 butt joint using 20mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6. Design the joint to transmit 16 marks
a pull equal to the full strength of the plate. Use 12mm thick cover plate.

In a truss, a tie member ISA 110 x 110 x 8mm carries a pull of 350 kN. The
5 angle is connected to an 8mm thick gusset using fillet welds. Design the 16 marks
welded joint. Assume field welding.

Design a simply supported steel beam of 5m effective span, carrying a


6 concentrated load of 200kN at the mid-span. The beam is laterally restrained. 16 marks
Assume a bearing length of 200 mm. Check the limit states.

A column 200 mm in diameter is made of Sal wood. The effective length of


7 the column is 2.5m. Determine the safe axial load of the round column. The 16 marks
column is situated in outside location.

Two plates 12mm x 10mm thick are joined by a triple riveted lap joint in which

black bolt of property class 4.6 and grade Fe410 steel with fy =250 MPa.

Design a built up column 8m long to carry a load of 400kN. The column is
