ing, “If he invited me to a public
hanging, I’d be on the front row.”
After the video was made
public Sunday, Hyde-Smith said
her remark Nov. 2 at a campaign
event in Tupelo was “an exag-
gerated expression of regard”
for a friend who invited her to
speak. “Any attempt to turn this
into a negative connotation is ri-
diculous,” she said.
Espy on Monday called the
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith
remark “disappointing and
harmful.”
“It reinforces stereotypes
that we’ve been trying to get
away from for decades, stereo-
types that continue to harm our
economy and cost us jobs,” he
told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.
At a news conference Mon-
day with Republican Gov. Phil
Bryant by her side, a stone-
faced Hyde-Smith refused to
answer questions about the
hanging remark.
“I put out a statement yester-
day, and that’s all I’m going to

of her comments or that people
have suffered ... I hope it makes
us feel the urgency.”

Thoughts on giving
after new tax law
The New Year is coming, and it
is time to think of taxes and how
we can lessen the amount that we
will be paying in April of next year.
The Tax Cuts and Job Act (TCJA)
that went into effect in December
of 2017 was designed to lower
our overall tax burden, but it also
eliminated the tax benefits for most
charitable donations.
The TCJA nearly doubled the
standard deduction for individuals
and couples and it may not make
sense for people who have itemized
in the past to do so this year. One
group of people, however, still have
an incentive to make donations to
a charitable group. If you are 70 ½
years of age or older and must take
required minimum distributions
(RMD) from an IRA each year,
you can reduce your tax burden
by donating all or a portion of your
RMD directly from your IRA to a
charitable organization. (The con-
tribution must come directly from
your IRA so you will have to ask
your financial advisor to carry this
out.) Since money coming to you
from your IRA is taxable, having
the RMD go directly to the chari-
table organization will lower your
taxable income and likely lower the
amount of taxes you will owe at the
end of the year.
As the director of a local
non-profit organization, I’ve always
been amazed at how generous the
citizens of Starkville are and don’t
expect to see a large decrease in
donations because of the new tax
laws. We care about each other
and support organizations helping
the least advantaged among us.
However, I am concerned whenever
there is an institutional change that
may affect our continued service
to those in need of better housing.

Though he is being hailed as Europe’s
new anti-Trump leader who will stand up
for transnationalism and globalism, Ma-
cron reveals his ignorance of America.
Trump’s ideas are not ideological but
rooted in our country’s history.
America was born between the end of
the French and Indian War, the Declara-
tion of Independence in 1776 and the rat-
ification of the Constitution in 1788. Both
the general who led us in the Revolution
and the author of that declaration became
president. Both put America first. And
both counseled their countrymen to avoid
“entangling” or “permanent” alliances
with any other nation, as we did for 160

lin Roosevelt, Congress formally voted
for neutrality in any future European war.
The U.S. emerged from World War II
as the least bloodied and least damaged
nation because we remained out of the
war for more than two years after it had
begun.
We did not invade France until four
years after France was occupied, the Brit-
ish had been thrown off the Continent,
and Josef Stalin’s Soviet Union had been
fighting and dying for three years.
The leaders who kept us out of the two
world wars as long as they did — did they
not serve our nation well, when America’s
total losses were just over 500,000 dead,
compared with the millions other nations
lost?
At the Armistice Day ceremony,
Macron declared, “By saying we put our-
selves first and the others don’t matter,
we erase what a nation holds dearest ...
its moral values.”
But Trump did not say that other coun-
tries don’t matter. He only said we should
put our own country first.

ingly, state Sen. David Baria,
his Democratic opponent,
polled 335,000 votes. Compare that to
the 239,000 polled four years ago by
former U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, the
Democratic challenger to former Sen.
Thad Cochran in the last midterm.
And that leads to this: What are the
factors in the Hyde-Smith – Espy runoff?
Simply said, Hyde-Smith has it to
lose. She’s an “incumbent,” serving in
the Senate since April after an anointing
by popular Gov. Phil Bryant in a state
that consistently gauges at least 65 per-

1966, and, in Montreal in 1967, declared,
“Long live a free Quebec” — inciting
French Canadians to rise up against “les
Anglo-Saxons” and create their own
nation.
Was de Gaulle lacking in patriotism?
By declaring American nationalists
anti-patriotic, Macron has asserted a
claim to the soon-to-be-vacant chair of
Angela Merkel.
But is Macron really addressing the
realities of the new Europe and world
in which we now live, or is he simply
assuming a heroic liberal posture to win
the applause of Western corporate and
media elites?
The realities: In Britain, Scots are
seeking secession, and the English have
voted to get out of the European Union.
Many Basques and Catalans wish to
secede from Spain. Czechs and Slovaks
have split the blanket and parted ways.
Anti-EU sentiment is rampant in popu-
list-dominated Italy.
A nationalism their peoples regard as
deeply patriotic has triumphed in Poland
and Hungary and is making gains even in
Germany.

nearly enough to be decisive. Too, it’s
not likely that any McDaniel voters will
cross into his camp.
Because Espy campaigns as an
honest broker as opposed to a zealot,
his challenge is to find a way to fire up
his likely voters, perhaps to actually
increase his total. The voters are out
there, by the way. Last week’s statewide
turnout was 860,000. Two years ago
in the presidential contest, 1.2 million
ballots were cast. In numbers, where
Espy won 351,00 votes last week, Hillary
Clinton won 485,000 Mississippi votes
in 2016.
It will come as no surprise if Pres-
ident Trump returns to Mississippi to
laud Hyde-Smith. It could at least make
things more interesting if Democrat
superstars such as former President
Barack Obama and/or Michelle Obama
did some serious retail campaigning in
this state for Espy.
From a national perspective, the
stakes, of course, could be higher. While
Republicans lost control of the House,
their hold on the Senate was retained.
The possibility had loomed that the
Hyde-Smith – Espy runoff would decide
control of the Senate, but Republicans
will hold the Senate regardless of who
wins in Mississippi.
In any event, voters will make state
history the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
Cindy Hyde-Smith will be the first wom-
an ever elected to the U.S. Senate from
Mississippi or Mike Espy will be the
first African-American since the years
immediately following the Civil War.
Once again, there will be speculation.
And once again the voters will tell us
what’s what.

ditiously to dissolve old alliances that put
America at risk of war in faraway lands
where no vital U.S. interests exist.
Why are we still committed to fight
for a South Korea far richer and more
populous than a nuclear-armed North?
Why are U.S. planes and ships still bump-
ing into Russian planes and ships in the
Baltic and Black seas?
Why are we still involved in the
half-dozen wars into which Bush II and
Barack Obama got us in the Middle East?
Why do we not have the “America
first” foreign policy we voted for?

as its publisher, Lee was

New exercise guidelines: Move

lines that stress that any
amount and any type of
exercise helps health.
The advice is the first
update since the govern-
ment’s physical activity
guidelines came out a de-
cade ago. Since then, the
list of benefits of exercise
has grown, and there’s
more evidence to back
things that were of un-
known value before, such
as short, high-intense
workouts and taking the
stairs instead of an eleva-
tor.
“Doing something is
better than doing noth-
ing, and doing more is
better than doing some-
thing,” said Dr. Donald
Lloyd-Jones, a preventive
medicine expert at North-
western University in Chi-
cago.

with guidelines in many
other countries and is the
average amount of activ-
ity observed in kids this
age.
From ages 6 through
17, at least an hour of
moderate-to-vigorous ac-
tivity throughout the day
is recommended. Most of
it should be aerobic, the
kind that gets the heart
rate up such as brisk walk-
ing, biking or running. At
least three times a week,
exercise should be vigor-
ous and include muscle-
and bone-strengthening
activities like climbing on
playground equipment or
playing sports.

Duration stays the
same — at least 2½ to 5
hours of moderate-inten-
sity or 1 ¼ to 2 ½ hours of
vigorous activity a week,
plus at least two days that
include muscle-strength-
ening exercise like push-
ups or lifting weights.
One key change: It
used to be thought that
aerobic activity had to
be done for at least 10
minutes. Now even short
times are known to help.
Even a single episode of
activity gives short-term

blood pressure, reducing

Sitting a lot is especial-

The advice is similar
for older adults, but activi-
ties should include things
that promote balance to

Homeland Security agents raid-
ed the Catholic Diocese of Jackson
on Nov. 7, according to a Clari-
on-Ledger report.
Childers’ report relies on infor-
mation from five confidential infor-
mants who agents interviewed in
August and September.
The affidavit contends Vargas’
efforts to defraud his congregation
began after a late 2014 visit to OCH
Regional Medical Center when he
began to claim that he’d been diag-
nosed with a rare form of cancer.
Vargas announced numerous times
to his parishioners that he had can-
cer and would seek treatment in
Canada, according to the affidavit.
A GoFundMe account was cre-
ated for Vargas in February 2015.
The proceeds were meant for Var-
gas’ supposed cancer treatment.
Childers’ affidavit says 57 people
donated $9,210 to the account.
According to the report, Vargas
withdrew $8,478.32 of the donated
GoFundMe money between March
24 and April 13, 2015.
Between March 21 and April 21
that same year, Vargas received
$20,202.69 from different sources.
The affidavit doesn’t make clear if
that total includes the GoFundMe
donations, but it does include a
“love offering” of $2,300 from the
Corpus Christi Catholic Church in
Macon.
On Nov. 24, 2015, St. Joseph’s
issued Vargas a $21,500 check, of
which $19,500 were for “Father’s
Health Donation.” Vargas deposit-
ed that money to his personal Re-
gions Bank account the same day.
“Vargas spent the donated funds
largely on personal expenses,” the
affidavit says. “None of the with-
drawals were for medical expens-
es.”
The affidavit also claims that
Vargas, seeking donations from
parishioners to help an orphanage
and to build a chapel in Mexico, re-
ceived more than $20,000 in dona-
tions, much of which was spent for
personal expenses.

According to Confidential infor-
mant No. 2 and records Homeland
Security subpoenaed from OCH,

mitted to OCH on Sept. 22, 2014,
with pneumonia. On Sept. 26, a
doctor noted that Vargas’ condition
was neither improving nor worsen-
ing and ordered an HIV test. On
Sept. 28, the affidavit says, Vargas
checked out of the hospital without
seeing his doctor.
Vargas reported during multiple
visits to OCH in 2016 that he had
been diagnosed with HIV, accord-
ing to the affidavit.
Confidential Informant No. 2
reported to agents that Bishop Ko-
pacz, of the Jackson Diocese, was
informed of Vargas’ diagnosis in
2015.
In March 2015, Father Kevin
Slattery, the Jackson Diocese’s
vicar general, sent an email to the
diocese’s priests about Vargas’ ill-
ness. The email included a section,
written by Vargas, claiming he had
cancer and that he would be receiv-
ing treatment.
Childers wrote in the affidavit
that he “believes the email was sent
in order to perpetuate the cancer
story, to hide Vargas’ HIV condition
and protect the Diocese of Jackson
from negative publicity.”
Childers also reports that, ac-
cording to Confidential Informant
No. 2, Vargas went to Canada, but
did not go for cancer treatment.
Vargas went to the Southdown
Institute of Toronto, which Confi-
dential Informant No. 4 said was,
“among other things, a sexual ad-
diction facility for priests.”

According to a statement issued
by the Jackson Diocese, Vargas has
been barred from engaging in any
public ministry and has been re-
moved from all pastoral and finan-
cial administrations.
Father Jeffrey Waldrep, of An-
nunciation Catholic Church in Co-
lumbus, is serving as St. Joseph’s
administrator, while Father Rusty
Vincent, the associate pastor of St.
Joseph’s, will oversee pastoral min-
istry at St. Joseph’s in Starkville
and Corpus Christi in Macon.
Waldrep, in an emailed response
to an inquiry from The Dispatch,
said the added duties will be a ma-
jor undertaking for him.
“This will directly affect my
ministry here at Annunciation,” he
said. “I will be required to split my
time administratively with Annun-
ciation Parish, Columbus, St. Jo-
seph Parish, Starkville and Corpus
Christi Mission in Macon.
“While a huge challenge, I do
feel that God has called me to be
there for all three communities
that I have a deep love and appreci-
ation for,” he continued. “My prayer
is that the staffs and great parish
leadership will be able to assist in
the days and months ahead.”

ally known house and
there might be someone
out there who saw this
as their chance to buy an
historic property,” Leike
said. “Later on, I recom-
mended they drop the
price, but they didn’t want
to do that. Now, it appears
they’ve changed their
minds.”
The home was pur-
chased by Robert and
Donna Snow in 1962.
Melanie Snow, one of
the Snows’ four children,
continues to live on the
property, conducting dai-
ly tours of the house and
grounds for visitors.
“We did decide to low-
er the price,” Melanie
said. “We
want to give
someone
an oppor-
tunity and
an incen-
tive to get
the place.
Our main Snow
concern all
along was the continua-
tion of Waverley.”
Waverley was once
part of a 50,000-acre plan-
tation. The home is not
only on the National Reg-
ister of Historic Places,
it is also designated as a
National Historic Land-
mark, one of just 40 in the
state.
Waverley was built
in 1852 by Col. George
Hampton Young and is
known for its unique
Greek Revival architec-
ture.
By the early 20th cen-
tury, the property was
embroiled in an estate
dispute. It was vacant
from 1913-1962, when
the Snows bought it.
From there, the Snows
embarked on a room-by-
room renovation, all while
raising four children on
the property.
The Snows entertained
often at their home with
Donna serving as hostess
until her death in 1991 at
age 67.
The family also opened
the home for daily tours,
and its reputation as one
of the finest antebellum
homes in the South soon
began to grow. Robert
Snow, who died in March
2017 at age 91, often
could be found sitting on
a bench in front of the
home where he regaled
visitors with his fantastic
tales.
Melanie Snow said
her hope is that the new
owners will continue to
restore and maintain the
home and keep it open for
public tours.
“You know, it’s abso-
lutely different here since
my parents have gone,”
Melanie said. “But their
spirits are still here in the
gardens and the home, I
can feel their presence.
We’re hoping someone
will love it and continue
working on it and appre-
ciate it as much as we do.”

CNN sues Trump, demanding return of Acosta to White House

NEW YORK — CNN is suing the
Trump administration, demanding that
correspondent Jim Acosta’s press cre-
dentials to cover the White House be
returned.
The administration revoked them last
week following President Trump’s con-
tentious news conference, where Acosta
refused to give up a microphone when
the president said he didn’t want to hear
anything more from him.
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in
Washington, D.C., District Court. CNN
claims the revocation of Acosta’s press
pass violates the constitutional rights to
freedom on the press and due process.
CNN is asking for an immediate re-
straining order to return Acosta to the
White House.
There was no immediate comment
from the administration.

this for a long time,” Stacy said. “It

and I finally got there. All of the
stress is off from that. Now I can

Stacy, a right-handed pitcher,
first showed signs he could contrib-
ute on the mound as a sophomore,
when he went 1-1 with a 1.21 earned
run average. In 17 1/3 innings, he
allowed 15 hits, three earned runs,
and 13 walks. He struck out 20. Sta-
cy took a step forward last season,
emerging as one of the Confeder-
ates’ top pitchers in a 16-13 season

Starkville High’s Talley delivers in final seconds to beat Meridian

On Thursday, Talley hit
only 1 of 2 free throws with
three seconds left against
Meridian, but that 24th
point was still enough to
help Starkville beat Merid-
ian 60-59.
For his performance,
Talley was named The Dis-
patch Prep Player of the
Week.
“Beating a team like
Meridian just gave the
team a huge lift,” Talley
said. “They are one of the
best teams in the state and
we battled. This is a new

er.”
Starkville (2-0) will try
to build on that momentum
when it plays host to Co-
lumbus at 7:30 p.m. Tues-
day. The girls’ teams will
face off in the first game of
the doubleheader at 6 p.m.
“Beating Meridian was
a good starting point,”
Starkville coach Greg Car-
ter said. “It’s a measuring
stick. You think you know
what you need to work
on. When you play some-
body that good, you really
learn.”

have been around
the program for Talley
some time, this is
the first extended they are
getting playing time on the
varsity level.
“We are fortunate in
that this group has played
together for quite some
time,” Carter said. “It just
hasn’t been up here on
the high school team, so
there is a comfort level,
just need to get them some
experience together. That
will come through
games.”
Talley plays point
guard and shooting
guard. He knew
the leadership ex-
pectations would
be increased to try
to lead a Starkville
team that is a perennial
contender in Jackson.
“Pretty much we have
learned through watching
the others lead,” Talley
said. “It’s exciting to be
a senior and to know the
other players are looking
to you for leadership and
guidance. You just try to
lead by the examples set
by the other teams. The
expectations are always
high. We aren’t going to
back down.”
Carter said Talley has a
defensive presence and an
ability to score.
“High basketball IQ,”
Carter said. “He makes
smart decisions on the
floor. Some of that you can
coach, but some of that
is instinct. The veteran
players have been in our
program long enough that
they know the expecta-
tions.”
Talley has played bas-
ketball since second grade.
A love for the game came
naturally. During the off-
season, he worked on
his ball handling and in-
creased his speed.
“Always loved playing
this game,” Talley said.
“Basketball has been good
to me, whether it’s at the
school or travel ball. Play-
ing for coach Carter has
been a blessing. He is go-
ing to get the best out of
you. He will find skills you
didn’t know you had.
“We are just out here
working hard every day to
get better. We want to be
one of those great teams
this school has produced.”

“Coach talked to us
about energy at halftime
and that we had to pick up
our energy,” Scott said.
“We talked among our-
selves and got each other
going. We know each oth-
er’s strengths and weak-
nesses, and we just tried to
get each other going like
they should.”
Jonah Simpson had sev-
en of his 21 points down the
stretch to help Blue Moun-
tain, an NAIA school, im-
prove to 2-0. Da’Juonta Ross
had 14 points and eight re-
bounds, and Fancher added
13 points for the Toppers.
Lukas Durasas led the way
with 11 rebounds.
Blue Mountain built a
27-11 lead with 11:34 to play
in the first half. A 3-pointer
by Harris with 3.6 seconds
to go in the half cut the half-
time deficit to 45-34.
In the second half, the
Owls turned up the defen-
sive intensity. Increased ac-
tivity on that end of the floor
slowly made the difference
in the second half, even af-
ter Harris had to leave the
game for a few minutes af-
ter apparently tweaking an
ankle. Pinkson scored on
a layup off a turnover and
Scott hit a 3-pointer to cap
an 8-0 run that cut the Top-
pers’ lead to 54-49. Wright
added another trey to keep
the Owls within one posses-
sion before a drive by Skin-
ner set the stage for Scott’s
rousing dunk.
On this night, though,
the Owls didn’t get to cel-
ebrate the program’s first
night, but they showed a
fight coach Brian Merkel
hopes will be there more
consistently for 40 minutes
at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
when his team plays host to
Talladega College.
“It was all on the defensive
end,” Merkel said. “We were
switching zone and man,
and we played zone in the
first half. We had to. We just
weren’t able to get any stops.
The guys really bought into
that (in the second half). The
effort level was there in the
second half.”
Merkel said the Owls
used a lot of one-on-one
matchups in an effort to
create off the dribble. He
said he will put more plays
in as the season progress-
es, but he feels the Owls’
skills lend itself to isolation
plays that spread the floor
and draw defenders to kick
to open shooters or give
players a chance to get all
of the way to the basket. An
8-for-25 effort from 3-point
range showed the Owls
have enough shooters to
make defenses pay if they
stay in a zone. Defensively,
Merkel is eager to see what
happens when the Owls
bring the defensive energy
they showed in the second
half for an entire game.
“If we play defense like
we did in the second half for
40 minutes I think we’re go-
ing to be very successful,”
Merkel said. “They scored
some late, but if we contin-
ue to put in the effort defen-
sively like we did in the sec-
ond half, we’ll put ourselves
in great position to win.”
Scott, who has played in
the post and facing the bas-
ket, is excited to see what
happens, too.
“It is going to be tough
for everyone that is on the
opposite side of the bench
for us,” Scott said. “When
we can combine and play as
a team, it is going to be hard
to stop us.”

coach Howard White Jr.’s
clapping reverberated
throughout Pohl Gymna-
sium as he said, “Let’s go
baby. That’s the way we
play.”
The W’s aggressive
style produced 42 points
in the paint en route to a
61-36 victory against NA-
IA-member Blue Mountain
College in the team’s home
opener.
“Coach is all motivation,”
Wallace said. “We know who
we can outrun and we can’t
outrun. We look over there
at him to know when we
should do it. Nine times out
of 10 our speed compared
to somebody else’s speed
we know we can outrun, we
don’t hesitate to look. We just
go with it.”
Wallace led the charge
with 17 points and six re-
bounds, while former West
Point High standout Qiayon
Bailey had 14 points and 16
rebounds. Autumn Taylor
added 11 points and eight
rebounds to help The W
(3-0), which is ranked No.
2 in the United States Col-
legiate Athletic Association
(USCAA) poll, kick off the
night in style.
Wallace smiled and said
White Jr. fusses at the Owls
when they don’t push the
tempo and try to beat op-
ponents down the court.
The proof came in the final
quarter, as the Owls, who
led 44-30 entering the final
quarter, scored 14 of their
final 17 points in the paint.
“It just depends on who
we have on the floor,” White
Jr. said. “I try to put two big
people on the floor at the
same time. Keke (Jones)
runs the floor pretty well.
She has asthma, so I have
to monitor her minutes. If
we start to push too much,
we have to get her out of
the game. ... We don’t really
have a big dropoff when we
bring them off the bench.”
Wallace is one of a
handful of guards in a
deep backcourt. Bailey,
Keyahna (KeKe) Jones,
and Tenazhia Hinkson
give the Owls balance in
the front court and willing
participants to run with
the guards. Earlier in the
fourth quarter, Jones ran
the court and rebounded
a missed drive by Wallace
and scored. The putback
was just another instance
of the Owls helping each
other. During a stoppage of
play prior to that sequence,
Wallace earned an unoffi-
cial “assist” when she bent
down and tied the sneaker
of Jones, who apparently
had jammed a pinkie finger
earlier in the game.
Wallace, who is coming
off the bench, used the word
“chemistry” to describe the
success the Owls have had
in the first week of the sea-
son. She said all of the play-
ers have fit into their roles
thanks to the work they have
done in practice.
“We know our team-
mates when we’re on the
floor together,” Wallace
said. “Coach just lets us
play. He knows when we’re
in our game and when
we’re not in our game. ...
Everybody has a role. It
doesn’t matter if you’re on
the bench. If you’re on the
bench, you cheer with your
team because when we go
to the national champion-
ship it ain’t going to be the
five on the floor who are go-
ing to get a ring. Everybody
is going to get one.”
White Jr. said the Owls
hope to add even more
depth to their front court
as Meosha Barnum gets
healthy. He didn’t deny,
though, that the backcourt
is the strength of team. He
said that lends itself to an
attacking brand of basket-

“I preach that to them all
of the time,” White Jr. said.
“You have to put pressure
on the defense. You have to
be in attack mode. We can
shoot the ball. We’re not a
great, great shooting team,
but we’re better — that’s
our strength — attacking
the basket and getting the
ball inside.”
The W had a 55-38 re-
bounding edge to solidify
White Jr.’s point about his
team’s strength. The Owls
also limited their turnovers
to 13, which enabled them
to get more opportunities
to score on a night when
they were 23-for-59 (39 per-
cent) from the field. The W
limited Blue Mountain (1-
2) to 22.9-percent shooting
(16-for-70) from the field.
“Our matchup zone is
probably our best defense
right now,” White Jr. said.
“We figured some things
out in Denver about how we
need to play. We still have
to get some rotations down
and everything, but other
than that, they’re doing a
pretty good job at it.”
The W will return to
action at 5:30 p.m. Thurs-
day at Rust College in Hol-
ly Springs.

part of a 5-3 season. He
sported a stingy 1.07 ERA
in nine games. In 46 in-
nings, he surrendered 24
hits and walked 29. He
struck out 72.
The highlight of Sta-
cy’s season was a five-in-
ning no-hitter against
Yazoo City in the opening
round of the playoffs. In
two postseason outings,
Stacy allowed only two
hits and zero earned runs
in 10 innings. He walked
eight and struck out 20.
“Last season helped
out a lot,” Stacy said. “I
know I can do what I did
last year and this year I
have the potential to do
better than I did.”
Stacy said his perfor-
mance as a junior raised
expectations for his fu-
ture and motivated him
to work harder. He spent
much of the offseason
playing with the East
Coast Sox travel base-
ball organization, which
Bates also belongs to.
Stacy pitched and played
in the outfield in the
summer.
Stacy said he visited
numerous junior colleges
in the state of Mississippi
and some small Division I
schools. He said he knew
he wanted to go to Me-
ridian C.C. after he took
his visit. He said he gave
a verbal commitment in
August.
“The success they
have had and I have heard
a lot of good things about
the development (of play-
ers at the school),” Stacy
said when asked what
impressed him about his
visit to the school. “I want
them to get me the best I
can be and move on from
there.”
Stacy also was third
on the team with 13 runs
scored and fourth on the
team with 13 RBIs. He
added four doubles and 10
stolen bases.
Bates had a monster
sophomore season, hit-
ting .367 with 33 hits and
22 RBIs. Last season,
Bates led Caledonia with
28 runs and three home
runs. He also was third
on the team with 14 RBIs
and five doubles. On the
mound, Bates logged 27
2/3 innings and struck
out 42. He said he projects
as a center field — his cur-
rent position — at EMCC.
“It was hard to turn
down that place,” said
Bates, who hadn’t thought
about attending EMCC pri-
or to his visit, but he said he
knew immediately he want-
ed to go to Scooba.

his visit to Scooba and
meeting new head coach
Brett Kimbrel, who took
over for former coach
Chris Rose in May. Kim-
brel spent the past two
seasons as an assistant
baseball coach at EMCC.
Prior to that, he spent 12

Bates said there are
times when it feels like he
has been playing baseball
for a long time. He said
he remembers when he
played coach-pitch and
that he is anxious to start
another phase of his base-
ball career at EMCC.
“I think I am going to
like it. It is going to be
something different,” said
Bates, who played with
the East Coast Sox for
four years. “I have been
working for this for a long
time. I think I am going to
do fine.”

NEW YORK — Shohei Ohtani was
rewarded for a Ruthian season at the
plate — and on the mound.
Baseball’s best two-way player
since the Babe at the dawn of the
live-ball era a century ago, Ohtani
was an overwhelming pick for Amer-
ican League Rookie of the Year on
Monday despite an elbow injury that
stymied his switch from Japan to the
major leagues and likely will prevent
him from pitching next year.
“I was just kind of disappointed I
wasn’t able to play a full season,” he
said through a translator. “I feel like
every player should be able to play a
full year and help out the team. That’s
something I need to work on, and
that’s going to be one of my goals, to
stay healthy for a long full season and
be able to the team win from day one.”
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald
Acuna Jr. was a runaway choice for
the NL honor over Washington out-
fielder Juan Soto in a contest between
20-year-olds.
A singular sensation who earned a
chorus of praise for his dual success,
Ohtani became the first player since
Ruth in 1919 with 10 homers and four
pitching wins in the same season.
He didn’t play between June 4 and
July 3 because of a sprained ulnar col-
lateral ligament in his right elbow, an
injury the Angels were aware of when
they signed him for a $2,315,000
bonus last winter. The 24-year-old
right-hander made just one more
mound appearance, on Sept. 2, and
three days later the team said a scan
revealed additional damage and sur-
gery was recommended.
Ohtani appeared in 22 more games
as a hitter, had Tommy John surgery
on Oct. 1 and hopes to be able to help
the Angels at the plate next season.
He probably won’t take the mound
again until 2020.
Ohtani, who left the Nippon Ham
Fighters to play in the major leagues,
received 25 first-place votes and four
seconds for 137 points from the Base-
ball Writers’ Association of America.
New York Yankees third baseman
Miguel Andujar was second with
five firsts and 89 points, and Yankees
second baseman Gleyber Torres was
next with 25 points.
Ohtani was 4-2 with a 3.31 earned
run average and 63 strikeouts in 51
2/3 innings in 10 starts. As a designat-
ed hitter, he batted .285 with 22 home
runs and 61 RBIs and a .925 OPS in
367 plate appearances.
He is the first Japanese player to
win a rookie honor since Seattle’s
Ichiro Suzuki in 2001 and the fourth
overall, joining the Dodgers’ Hideo
Nomo in 1995 and Seattle’s Kazuhiro
Sasaki in 2000. Ohtani became the
first player with 15 homers as a batter
and 50 strikeouts as a pitcher in the
same season.
Acuna received 27 first-place votes
and three seconds for 144 points. Soto
got two firsts and 89 points.
Acuna, in Japan with a major
league All-Star team, declined to
participate in a morning conference
call about the vote, BBWAA secre-
tary-treasurer Jack O’Connell said.
Acuna started the season at Tri-
ple-A and made his debut on April
25, the youngest player in the ma-
jors then at 20 years, 128 days. The
Venezuelan hit .293 with 26 homers,
64 RBIs and 16 steals with a .917
OPS.
Soto debuted on May 20 at 19
years, 207 days, although in a quirk
the Dominican is credited with a
home run from five days before his
debut — he went deep on June 18
against the New York Yankees in the
completion of the May 15 suspended
game. Soto hit .292 with 22 homers,
70 RBIs and a .923 OPS. He was two
shy of Tony Conigliaro’s big league
record for home runs by a teenager.
The AL and NL Manager of the
Year will be announced Tuesday. Bos-
ton’s Alex Cora, Tampa Bay’s Kevin
Cash and Oakland’s Bob Melvin are
the finalists for the AL honor and
Atlanta’s Brian Snitker, Milwaukee’s

MSU hopes it won’t have to wor-
ry about the issue at 11 a.m. Satur-
day (ESPN) when it plays host to
Arkansas (2-8, 0-6), but MSU foot-
ball coach Joe Moorhead said the
issues have been infrequent.
“We struggled with it at Ken-
tucky,” Moorhead said. “I don’t
think you saw much of an issue
with it outside of the first two plays
at LSU. That was probably the loud-
est environment we’ve played in.
We only utilize it on the road when
crowd noise is a factor.”
Against Kentucky, nearly all
of the 11 offensive penalties MSU
committed were delay of games or

a three-year run at the stadium.
CBS Sports Network also

“Incredible accomplishment
to be back in the championship
game,” EMCC coach Buddy
Stephens said. “These group
of kids have worked hard and
earned that trip. An undefeated
team from our league (Missis-
sippi Association of Commu-
nity and Junior Colleges) will
always be in position to play in
this game. It’s an honor to be
representing our league.”
The NJCAA released its final
rankings Monday afternoon.
EMCC earned 15 of 17 first-
place votes and held a 16-point
lead over Garden City (369-
353) in the computer rankings.
Garden City secured the other
two first-place votes.
This season marked the first
time EMCC was ranked No. 1 in
all 12 rankings.
“That may be the biggest
testament to the consistency
of this team,” Stephens said.
“They have played with the
bull’s eye on their back the
entire season. For the sopho-
mores, last year’s (national)
championship was not enough.
This team is striving to make it
two straight.”
EMCC captured its seventh
MACJC State championship
with a 19-14 victory against
then-No. 4 Jones College on
Saturday in Ellisville. Quar-
terback TyQuan Ulmer threw
two touchdown passes to Don-
tario Drummond, while Deon
McIntosh eclipsed 1,000 yards
for the season and scored the
team’s other touchdown.
On defense, the Lions forced
a season-best six turnovers.
“This team wanted to save its
best performance for a champi-
onship setting,” EMCC soph-
omore defensive back JaQuez
Akins said. “Last season, the
defense played to the best of
its capabilities. This season, ev-
erybody has bought in and put
more time in to make sure we
are playing like a championship
team.
EMCC enters the national
championship game allowing
a nation-best 11.4 points per
game. Five opponents were
held to seven points or less.
EMCC, which improved
to 7-0 in state championship
games, will try to move to 7-0 in
bowl games and 5-0 in nation-
al championship games under
Stephens.
Garden City captured the
Jayhawk League regular-sea-
son championship for the sec-
ond time in three years. The
BroncBusters won twice by
three points and four times by
eight points or less.
This will be the final game
for coach Jeff Sims, who is
headed to Missouri Southern
University. Sims guided Gar-
den City to the 2016 national
championship.
Charles West has eight 100-
yard rushing games to lead the
Garden City.

Mississippi C.C, No. 11 Missis-
sippi Gulf Coast C.C., and No.
18 Copiah-Lincoln C.C. also
represented the MACJC in the
final poll.
On Tuesday, Jones is expect-

NJCAA releases all bowl pair-
ings for this season. That game
played host to EMCC’s last
three national championships.
Meanwhile, EMCC will pack
a 16-game winning streak for
Kansas. EMCC has played two
previous national championship
games as the No. 1 team.
