Lesson 15 Introduction to the P.C.

- Show students French cartoons. Go through the meaning with students.

Students didn’t really find this all that funny.
- Tell students the agenda for the day:
Activity #1 (~15 minutes):
- Review the recent past with students:
o What is it used for?
o How is it formed?
- Have students complete a worksheet about the recent past. Put answers on the
board and have students self-correct. Take up to review
(F) Worksheet about the recent past
There were a few issues with the recent past. It seems a few select students need a bit
more review with it, but then there are students who are doing fine with it. I didn’t take
the sheet up to review b/c students were taking notes on it for tomorrow’s reading
comprehension. I will need to do some sort of exit slip about it to review.

Activity #1 (~10 minutes):

- Review the conjugation of the verb avoir.
- Provide 6 sentences on the board that are written in the past tense (tell students
they are in the past tense but do not tell students that they are written in the
passé compose). In pairs, have students look at the sentences and attempt to
answer the following questions:
o Underline the verb in each sentence. Is there a pattern?
o How many parts make up the past tense in French?
o What are they?
o With your partner, work out how to form the past tense in French.
- Go through as a class
(F) Worksheet – Go through and discuss as a class.
The “self-discovery” was just okay. It seemed like students were more trained to just be
given directions. The activity had potential, but it needs to be done more frequently in
class in order to be effective. However, most students were able to identify some sort of
pattern with the sentences.

Activity #2 (~15 minutes): Introduce the passé composé

- Explain what the P.C. is:

Lesson 15 Introduction to the P.C.

o It is a verb tense that is used to talk about completed actions in the past.
(Ex. “I talked” instead of “I was talking”)
o It can also be used for events that happened multiple times in the past.
- It is composed of two parts: The auxiliary verb and the past participle.
o The auxiliary verb is usually “avoir” but can be “etre” as well. The use of
“Etre” will be discussed at a later time.
o Go through the past participle and how to form it with each of the three
verb groups. (-er = é, -ir= i, and -re = u.). Show students these using an
example for each (parler, finir, vendre)
- Explain that if a verb is irregular in the present tense it will likely have an irregular
past participle as well. Introduce the following to students:
o Aller
o Vouloir
o Faire
o Etre
o Devoir.
- Have students complete the table on the bottom of the worksheet, Correct as a
class.
(F) Worksheet about the P.C.
Students seemed to be decently clear with the concept of the P.C. We didn’t get a
chance to correct their worksheet, but we will need to go through and correct tomorrow.
Activity #3 (~30 minutes): We didn’t quite get here, but I still intend on doing this
activity at a later time.
- Students will participate in an oral activity. They must pair up and create a mini
dialogue using the P.C. where they will ask each other what they did yesterday.
- Present the questions “Qu’est-ce que tu as fait hier? »to students. Brainstorm
ways to answer this question and write them on the board.
- Have students create their dialogue as follows:
o Students A will ask “Qu’est-ce que tu as fait hier?”
o Student B will answer « Alors hier […]”
o Students will them reverse roles.
- Have students present their dialogue to the class.
(F) Anecdotal notes/observation
Activity 4 (Sponge): Play a kahoot about the P.C.
Conclusion (~2 minutes):
- Thank students for their participation
