Music Theory I

FALL 2018 Course Syllabus

Course Description: A study of the fundamentals of music through the
analysis and composition of music in the Baroque and Classical styles.

Grading: By components and percentages as follows:
Components and Percentage of Final Grade:
Major Tests (4): 15% each
In Class Assignments and Participation: 10%
Music Theory Paper: 10%
Final Exam: 20%
Final Grade Percentages Scale
A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79, etc.
Attendance Policy
Attendance is mandatory for all scheduled classes. More than 6 (4, MW
class) absences, excused or unexcused, will result in the lowering of the
final grade by one letter grade for each additional class day missed.
Excessive absences may result in the student being withdrawn from the
course.
Withdrawal Policy:

Per Valencia Policy 4-07 (Academic Progress, Course Attendance and
Grades, and
Withdrawals), a student who withdraws from class before the established
deadline for a particular term will receive a grade of “W .” A student is
not permitted to withdraw after the withdrawal deadline. A faculty
member MAY withdraw a student up to the beginning of the final exam
period for violation of the class attendance policy. A student who is
withdrawn by faculty for violation of the class attendance policy will
receive a grade of “W.” Any student who withdraws or is withdrawn
from a class during a third or subsequent attempt in the same course will
be assigned a grade of “F.” For a complete policy and procedure

Testing Policy
Students are expected to take all tests and the final examination as
scheduled. Any engagement away from the college, which involves
absence from a scheduled test, will require the student to take the test(s)
in advance of the absence. Absence due to illness or death in the
immediate family will normally be excused.
Exit Skills
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to
demonstrate, with at least 90% accuracy, the following skills:
. 1 Notation of basic music symbols with acceptable calligraphy 


. 2 Construction of any diatonic, chromatic, whole tone or


pentatonic scale with appropriate key signature 


. 3 Construction of major, minor, augmented or diminished triads 


. 4 Composition and Analysis of music involving primary chords in


three and four parts following conventional procedures for chord
connection. 


Academic Honesty:
Each student is expected to be in complete compliance with the college
policy on academic honesty as set forth in the college catalog and the
student handbook. The professor may choose to withdraw the student
from the class and may assign a failing grade if these policies are not
followed.
Students With Disabilities:
Students with disabilities who qualify for accommodations must provide
a notification from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and
discuss specific needs with the instructor, preferably during the first two
weeks of class. The Office of Disabilities determines accommodations
based on appropriate documentation of disabilities. The East Campus
Office is located in Building 5, Room 216.
Student Conduct:
Valencia Community College is dedicated to the advancement and
