ABSTRACT
Cancer is the most frightening disease, not only in women but also in men and children. One of the
therapies used to suppress cancer cell growth is chemotherapy. The aim of this study were to identify
the correlation between family support with anxiety levels and coping mechanism in cancer patients
who received chemotherapy at H. Adam Malik Public Hospital Medan in 2017. The research design
was correlational analytic with cross sectional approach. The population of this study were cancer
patients who received chemotherapy as much as 95 people. The samples of this study were recruited
with accidental sampling as much as 43 people. The data were analyzed by spearman correlation
with significance α <0.05. This study showed that the majority of family support was good category
(51.2%), majority of anxiety levels was moderate category (55.8%) and majority of coping
mechanism was maladaptive category (90.7%). The study found that there were correlation between
family support with anxiety levels (r = -0.418; p < 0.05) and coping mechanism (r = 0.313; p < 0.05).
It is recommended to the family members can provide optimal support for respondents especially
when undergoing chemotherapy in order to improve quality of life of respondents.
